Firefighters in Haverhill battled a roaring seven-alarm blaze yesterday at a vacant mill downtown, the city’s fire department said.
The blaze on Stevens Street ignited about
5 p.m., according to the department. As of last night, no injuries had been reported. Thick smoke plumes from the fire could be seen for miles.
State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan said last night that he was on his way to the blaze and his agency had investigators “focused on the cause of the fire” on scene. Coan said, however, the “large fire” was still burning last night and the cause was not immediately expected to be known.
