Danielle George, Professor of Radio Frequency Engineering, at the University of Manchester, claims that the under 40s expect everything to ‘just work’ and have no idea what to do when things go wrong.
Unlike previous generations who would ‘make do and mend’ now young people will just chuck out their faulty appliances and buy new ones.
But Prof George claims that many broken or outdated gadgets could be fixed or repurposed with only a brief knowledge of engineering and electronics.

The Italian Defense Ministry said 165 of the 478 people on the ferry had been evacuated by Sunday evening, more than 14 hours after the fire erupted.
“It will be a very difficult night. A night in which we hope we will be able to rescue all on board,” Greek Merchant Marine Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis said in Athens.
He said 10 merchant ships were in the area assisting rescue efforts, and that those who had already taken on dozens of passengers from the stricken ferry would remain in the area until the operation was over. Only then would it be determined where they would go, Varvitsiotis said.
The fire broke out before dawn Sunday on a car deck of the Italian-flagged Norman Atlantic, traveling from the western Greek port of Patras to the Italian port of Ancona on the Adriatic, with 422 passengers and 56 crew members on board.

How does an unemployed essentially homeless, “transient” character like Brinsley gain such significant amounts of cash. “Where did he get his money, who does he hang out with? [he] doesn’t seem to have been employed,” Police Commishioner Bill Bratton asked curiously when appearing on CBS’s show This Morning.
Similarly Bassem Masri, a professional agitator from the Saint Louis area, has no job – but can spend months leading angry, often extremely vulgar, tirades against various Police Departments; and still have money to fly, travel, pay his expenses, eat, etc. It was not long ago when Masri put $15,000 cash up for his own bond in Saint Louis -after his arrest for spitting on a police officer- and hired a private attorney.

From across the continent, they came to Queens to pay their respects to a hero in blue, brutally gunned down with his partner for no reason other than he wore an NYPD badge.
Clad in dress blues and white gloves on a sunny, cool morning, 23,000 police officers from as far away as San Diego and Canada and from every corner of New York gathered at Christ Tabernacle Church in Glendale, Queens, to bid farewell to Officer Rafael Ramos.
He and his partner, Officer Wenjian Liu, were shot dead Dec. 20 by Ismaaiyl Brinsley, a madman bent on avenging the police-custody death of Eric Garner. Brinsley fired four shots point-blank at the cops as they sat in a patrol car in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Authorities say several fights broke out among hundreds of teens who packed a western Pennsylvania shopping center, forcing it to close early and it seems to be a trend cutting across malls in America.

More young people under age 30, the age group who were most enthusiastic about electing the nation’s first African-American president, now disapprove of his performance on racial issues than approve. And Eric Holder has one of the lowest approval ratings of any public official.
Law-enforcement officials are appalled at the way the Obama administration exploited tragedies in Ferguson, Mo., and New York City to appeal to its political base. David Clarke, a Democrat who is the African-American sheriff of Milwaukee, doesn’t mince his words.
“The thing that disappoints me the most is some very powerful people in this country — the president of the United States, Attorney General Eric Holder and Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York — have created a pathway that contributes to an unjustifiable hatred of law enforcement officers across the country,” he told WMAL radio in Washington, DC. “They trashed an entire profession with a broad brush because it was politically expedient for them to do so.”

One leading cybersecurity firm, Norse Corp., said Monday it has narrowed its list of suspects to a group of six people — including at least one Sony veteran with the necessary technical background to carry out the attack, according to reports.
The investigation of the Sony hacking by the private companies stands in stark contrast to the finding of the FBI, which said Dec. 19 its probe traced the hacking — which ended up foiling the planned wide release of the Hollywood studio’s “The Interview” — to North Korea.
Kurt Stammberger, senior vice president at Norse, said he used Sony’s leaked human-resources documents and cross-referenced the data with communications on hacker chat rooms and its own network of Web sensors to determine it was not North Korea behind the hack.

A leading cyber-security firm says that the Sony hack was an inside job, not a North Korean reprisal because of "The Interview."
* * *
The FBI was very clear in its press release about who it believed was responsible for the attack: “The FBI now has enough information to conclude that the North Korean government is responsible for these actions,” they said in their December 19 statement, before adding, “the need to protect sensitive sources and methods precludes us from sharing all of this information”.
[. . .]
The hackers dumped the data. Would a state with a keen understanding of the power of propaganda be so willing to just throw away such a trove of information? The mass dump suggests that whoever did this, their primary motivation was to embarrass Sony Pictures. They wanted to humiliate the company, pure and simple.
No, North Korea Didn’t Hack Sony

William King has lived in his Bronx neighborhood for 40 years, and since 1974 he has felt safe - that is until Saturday afternoon when he was brutally beaten in broad daylight. The vicious encounter was caught on home surveillance camera.
"I got a cut above over my eyelid, and the side of my face is numb - I can't open my mouth that well and I had a lump the size of a baseball on the side of my head," says King.
The incident happened near the corner of Briggs Avenue and East 197th Street in Bedford Park - not in the wee hours of the morning, but at 2 in the afternoon on a beautiful, bright and busy day.
One man pounded the 67-year-old, while another acted as a lookout - both were left empty-handed.
[. . .]
"I believe it was a racial attack - they weren't trying to rob me, I had money on me and my wallet and all. They weren't trying to rob me," adds King.
King works as a facility maintenance clerk for a law firm, and teaches Sunday School at Our Lady of Refuge. His neighbors say the video is so hard to watch.
"I'm a believer in God, that he watches over me, but sometimes you have to watch out for the fools, and there are some fools in this neighborhood," says Diana Monroe.
"That's really sad - that's desperation in my opinion," says Elizabeth Sing.
King says that he believes the suspects are animals.

The intent of Obama’s Fundamental Transformation of America and those of the Revolutionary Communist Party USA are one and the same. Both foment for the kind of revolution that will take down America and toss it into the dust bin of history.
“If you were watching the news broadcasts about the protests in New York City, you undoubtedly saw many people carrying signs reflecting their beliefs. But wait. The people holding those signs don’t look even barely capable of having printed the signs themselves, so you might wonder who the sponsor of the rally could be. Who furnished the signs?
“Well, on the bottom of the signs is the name of the sponsor: revcom.us “So, if you’re at all curious, just click right here on revcom.us and see who provided those spiffy signs those idiots are holding up. It’ll only take a second.”
Benjamin has proven something no one else has to date: protesters in Ferguson and New York are not grassroots orientated but agitated and aggravated into action by revcom.us—the US home-grown communists.
That makes Al Sharpton the Commie’s loudest and biggest useful idiot in America.
[. . .]
History proves that in times of upheaval, Communism always moves in to fill the vacuum. The Communists moved in on Hungary in 1949, they rolled their tanks into Czechoslovakia in 1968, invaded Afghanistan in 1979, moved in on the Ukraine in 2014, and now look to balkanizing America.
Communists prey on the young and the poor to fill their ranks with ‘useful idiots’; feed the resentment of malcontents with propaganda and lies that send them raging out to the streets, to loot and set small business and private property ablaze.
Protesters no longer know or even care about what is true when even their pastors are out on the streets where signs stamped revcom.us.are hoisted.
[. . .]
Meanwhile, blogger Benjamin hit the nail on the head when he posted these words on westernfreepress.com: 50 Years Ago a pro-Castro Commie Murdered Our President.

So convinced of the soon-to-come success of their joint venture, Fundamental Transformation of America chief architect Barack Obama and ‘We-can’t-breathe’ Chairman of the Revolutionary Communist Party USA, Bob Avakian, prime organizer of the current, increasingly violent anti-cop street protests, run their underground missions far away from home base.
Obama, who conducts his mission from golf courses and lush vacation spots, uses the White House as an occasional stopover. With too few public appearances on U.S. soil to count over the last 40 years, Avakian runs his anti-cop street protests from the safety of France, the country he ran to after assaulting a police officer in 1979.

Public memory is short and we all tend to conveniently park communists in the cobwebbed past, moth-balling the inherent dangers of their latter-day activity in file boxes no one wants to open for fear of accusations of red baiting.
But the same radicals who have nourished dreams for revolution for the past half century are the chief organizers of the looting and burning taking place today on the streets of American cities.

Suspected Debris From Air Asia Plane
The problem is not the thunderstorms but with modern aviation practices.
[. . .]
A professional pilot always expects things to go wrong. Nothing is normally taken for granted in the cockpit. The fact that a flyer flips a switch is no guarantee that the selected system is going to operate.
Air Asia pilots have precisely the same training and skill requirements as any other airline in the world. What happened to them can happen to any other operator. And has happened.
The degradation of flying skills is endemic throughout the airline industry.
hand flying skills became less important and began to take a back seat compared to computer operating competence, which was now seen as the primary way to fly in the intense electronic environment of a modern airliner.

Air Asia 8501. When will we learn?
By Rob Schapiro
During the swimmer Michael Phelps’s 2008 Olympic gold-medal streak, Cronise heard the widely circulated claim that Phelps was eating 12,000 calories a day. Having been fastidiously trying to lose weight, he was incredulous. Phelps’s intake was more than five times what the average American eats daily, and many thousands of calories more than what most elite athletes in training need. Running a marathon burns only about 2,500 calories. Phelps would have to be aggressively swimming during every waking hour to keep from gaining weight. But then Cronise—who knows enough about heat transfer to have been employed keeping astronauts alive in the sub-zero depths of space—figured it out: Phelps must be burning extra calories simply by being immersed in cool water.
Seven million years of evolution were dominated by two challenges: food scarcity and cold.
Fascinated, Cronise began a regimen of cold showers and shirtless walks in winter, and he lost 26.7 pounds in six weeks.
[. . .]
Many of us live almost constantly, year-round, in 70-something-degree environments. And when we are caught somewhere colder than that, most of us quickly put on a sweater or turn up the thermostat.
In that sense, we don’t really experience seasonal variations in temperature the way our ancestors did.
[. . .]
Cronise, Bremer, and Sinclair propose what they call the “Metabolic Winter” hypothesis: that obesity is only in small part due to lack of exercise, and mostly due to a combination of chronic overnutrition and chronic warmth. Seven million years of human evolution were dominated by two challenges: food scarcity and cold.
The Benefits of Being Cold
Year-round warmth is a modern luxury, and one that could be affecting body weight and health.

Police had secured an arrest warrant for the man after he threatened to kill police and FBI agents in the online video, Chitwood said.

Investigators remain on scene at the north Edmonton home where seven bodies were found.
The shooting deaths of six adults and two children in Edmonton were committed by a man known to police who used a stolen 9-mm handgun, police Chief Rod Knecht said in a news conference Tuesday night.
The victims were found in two separate residences in Edmonton on Monday night.
The man police believe is responsible was found dead by suicide in a restaurant in the nearby city of Fort Saskatchewan on Tuesday morning. Knecht said the man had a criminal record dating back to 1987.
"It appears to be an extreme case of domestic violence gone awry," he said, stressing there was no evidence of gang links. He said the slayings were planned and deliberate.

Let's look at some of the ways white liberals use black people. One of the more obvious ways is for liberals to equate any kind of injustices suffered by homosexuals and women to the black struggle for civil rights. But it is just plain nonsense to suggest any kind of equivalency between the problems of homosexuals and women and the centuries of slavery followed by Jim Crow, lynching, systematic racial discrimination and the blood, sweat and tears of the black civil rights movement.
The largest and most powerful labor union in the country is the National Education Association, with well over 3 million members. Teachers benefit enormously from their education monopoly. It yields higher pay and lower accountability. It's a different story for a large percentage of black people who receive fraudulent education. The NEA's white liberals — aided by black teachers, politicians and so-called black leaders — cooperate to ensure that black parents who want their children to have a better education have few viable choices.
[. . .]
A man from Mars, knowing nothing about homicide facts, would conclude that the major problem black Americans have with murder and brutality results from the behavior of racist policemen. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there are about 200 police arrest-related deaths of blacks each year (between 300 and 400 for whites). That number pales in comparison with the roughly 7,000 annual murders of blacks, 94 percent of which are committed by blacks. The number of blacks being murdered by other blacks is of little concern to liberals. Their agenda is to use arrest-related deaths of blacks to undermine established authority.
[. . .]
Liberals desperately need blacks. If the Democratic Party lost just 30 percent of the black vote, it would mean the end of the liberal agenda. That means blacks must be kept in a perpetual state of grievance in order to keep them as a one-party people in a two-party system. When black Americans finally realize how much liberals have used them, I'm betting they will be the nation's most conservative people. Who else has been harmed as much by liberalism's vision and agenda?

NYPD traffic tickets and summonses for minor offenses have dropped off by a staggering 94 percent following the execution of two cops — as officers feel betrayed by the mayor and fear for their safety, The Post has learned.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner Bill Bratton arrive to speak at a press conference on Dec. 22.
Whatever his ambition, Bratton is biting off more than he can chew, as he proved with a wacky analysis in an interview with New York magazine.
Blaming the media for the crisis engulfing City Hall, Bratton accused this paper of “hating” Mayor Bill de Blasio and said, “If the cops are reading The Post, they’re not going to like the mayor, because it’s hanging the mayor 24 hours a day.” Then he attacked The New York Times, saying it doesn’t like de Blasio “because he’s not far enough to the left for where they want to be.”
Sob, sob — poor de Blasio, everybody’s picking on him. “This guy’s heart is in the right place,” Bratton insisted. “He likes cops. He appreciates what they do.”
[. . .]
Start with the fact that The Post doesn’t hate de Blasio, only the fact that he shows more respect for Al Sharpton than for the cops who risk their lives to keep all New Yorkers safe. And that the mayor has so little regard for the families of hundreds of people who died in a plane crash that he was late to the annual moment of silence in Queens. And that he erects a tall fence around Gracie Mansion, then lies about the reason and the cost. And that he demands that landlords freeze rents while charging a whopping $5,000 a month for his vacant Brooklyn house.

A recent parolee has been charged in the shooting last weekend of an off-duty St. Louis police officer in the city's Hyde Park neighborhood.
Dominic Irons is charged with shooting and critically injuring an off-duty St. Louis police officer on Dec. 19.
Authorities said the officer was critically injured Dec. 19 in a gunfight with people in a car driven by the parolee, Dominic Lamont Irons, 29, of the 2800 block of Delmar Boulevard.
A court document says one of the others in the car was killed in the shootout. At least one other person was still being sought by police.
Irons was charged Saturday with assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon. The circuit attorney's office said he also was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of the accomplice.
According to a court document, Irons and the others in the car followed the officer's truck for the purpose of shooting him.
As the officer pulled to the curb in the 3800 block of North 25th Street and began to get out of his truck, Irons drove alongside and someone in the car shot at the officer.

Daniel Mael, a student at Brandeis University and a reporter for Truth Revolt, is receiving threats after reporting on hateful tweets by a student leader.
He reported on tweets from Khadijah Lynch, a student leader at the university, who said she had "no sympathy" for two recently murdered NYPD officers.
[. . .]
Lynch, who previously served as Undergraduate Department Representative for the African and Afro-American Studies Department at Brandeis, began to receive criticism after Mael’s reporting.
Two days later, after Lynch’s tweets went viral, leftist Brandeis students attacked Mael, accusing him of racism. A member of the Student Conduct Board emailed the university’s president and senior administrators, accusing Mael of “stalking” and “targeting” Lynch, and demanded the university hold Mael “accountable.”
Mael even received death threats.
A Change.org petition began and accused Mael’s report of being libelous and cyber-bullying the cop-hating Lynch

A Durham police officer dove for cover Thursday night after a man walked up and began shooting at him, police said Friday.
The incident happened about 10 p.m. on Lakeland Street, just north of Truman Street. Police said Officer J.T. West was sitting in his patrol car, working on a report, when he saw two men approaching his car from behind.
As West got out of the car to speak to them, one of the men pulled out a gun and began firing, police said. The man fired six shots at West, striking the patrol car once.
West fired two rounds in return. Police said it wasn’t known if West wounded either of the men.

NAN, which began humbly in Harlem in 1991 with Saturday-morning rallies at PS 175, now boasts 45 chapters across the country. The group lobbies for African-American rights and raises awareness of issues such as police brutality and racial profiling.
“Sharpton went national just like a franchise,” said Flaherty. “Each of these local chapters can now hit up businesses for support in their communities.”
[. . .]
Anheuser-Busch states on its Web site that it gave the group “between $100,000 and $499,000″ last year.
Last year, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo found NAN had failed to file years’ worth of financial reports. The group has filed more records, but the AG’s office said it won’t release them pending the US attorney’s probe.
In its 2006 IRS filing, the latest available, NAN reported about $1 million in contributions and $1.1 million in expenses and programs. It owes the IRS $1.9 million in payroll taxes, The Post has learned.

One man who came out of a morning prayer service at the synagogue said he’s heard from some people who’d rather say nothing about the graffiti, for fear of encouraging more vandalism.
David Stark, who grew up in the neighborhood but now lives in Israel, calls the graffiti a wake-up call.
“It’s a part and parcel of a rising tide of anti-Semitism. It’s here, it’s on college campuses. It can’t be ignored,” he tells CBS 2’s Derrick Blakley.

The record number of incidents includes everything from violent assaults to verbal abuse, hate-mail and attacks on social media.
The exact figures will not be released until February 2015 but the number is likely to exceed 1,000.
Previously the highest number of anti-Semitic incidents recorded in Britain in a single year in the recent past was 931 in 2009.
The Community Security Trust (CST), a charity that monitors anti-Semitism in Britain, expects the total for 2014 to be the highest since it started collating the figures in 1984.

Ronald S. Lauder told Reuters in an interview anti-Semitism had reached levels not seen since World War Two, driven by Islamist extremists using hatred of Jews as a way to attack Israel, and by far-right nationalists in Europe.
He said the commemorations on Jan. 27 to mark the day Soviet troops liberated Auschwitz in 1945 would be the last major anniversary when survivors would be able to attend in numbers. The youngest are now in their 70s.
"I believe it is a good reminder to people of what happens when we remain silent, and the world was silent when Hitler was starting, the world was silent when Jews were taken away, the world was silent at Kristallnacht and in many ways, although many people knew what was happening in the concentration camps, it was not publicized," Lauder said.

Sunday night around 9:20 p.m., two officers in a single patrol car were responding to a call and driving southbound on Hoover Street near 62nd Place. They saw a muzzle flash -- the visible blast from a gun -- and determined they were being fired at, Neiman said.
Neither officer was hurt, and they returned fire, officials said.
Police called a citywide tactical alert and launched a massive search. One person of interest was detained for questioning, but another man remained at large.
"It was an ambush," Deputy Chief Bob Green said. "They were fired upon without any prior contact with the suspects."

A Bronx teacher is suing New York City and the city’s Department of Education claiming his race and gender made him a target for unfair treatment.
The New York Post reports Paugh William Shadow of Port Jervis, New York charges he was discriminated against at MS 391, The Angelo Patri Middle School – “a mostly black and Latino middle school.”
Among other things, Shadow claims he was denied a bathroom key for three years.
The 7th grade mathematics and science teacher says he was “falsely accused of corporal punishment, using derogatory language and leaving his post; and that school administrators refused to back him up on disciplinary matters and failed to reimburse him after he bought materials for his science-lab students.”
He was accused of marching 6th-graders up and down a set of stairs for more than five minutes as a means of discipline. That was dismissed, he claims.
The teacher says he “was humiliated in front of his peers” and that school officials “discriminated against [him] due to his gender and race,” according to the paper.

The sudden rise of a new anti-establishment party has transformed Spanish politics a year before a general election, forcing the center-right government to veer away from austerity and the left-leaning opposition to scramble for new leaders.
In just a year since its founding, the party "Podemos" - We Can - has overturned the two party system in place since Spain embraced democracy in the 1970s. It is now polling around even with the ruling People's Party (PP) and main opposition Socialists, and has even led in some polls.
[. . .]
Podemos has set up hundreds of local assemblies known as "circulos" across the country, staging unruly weekly meetings at which Spaniards can vent the anger built up during worst economic crisis since World War Two.
"The one thing we all share is the outrage over what's going on in Spain," said Jose Luis Soriano, a 32-year old unemployed computer scientist who has been coming to the circulo in the upscale Madrid neighborhood of Salamanca since the summer.
[. . .]
Created in January by a group of political science professors from the Complutense University in Madrid and led by charismatic 36-year old Pablo Iglesias, the party is tapping into the sentiment behind the "Indignados" movement of youths that occupied Spanish squares in 2011.

My colleague Hannah Kuchler in San Francisco wrote a terrific feature earlier in the year about the likes of Sociometric Solutions, which puts sensors in name badges to discover social dynamics at work, monitoring how employees move around the office, who they talk to and even what tone of voice they use.Another US manufacturer she profiled, Steelcase, puts sensors in office furniture and argues that the technology is now so cheap that it can be deployed “practically everywhere”.
I’ve recently been contacted by a thriving UK-headquartered company called Condeco Software, whose products include wireless “workplace occupancy sensors” that track movement to assess how much desks and meeting rooms are being used.

One of the tactics appears to imitate the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) method of beheading.
The guide to killing Jews teaches that after stabbing the victim, the knife should be twisted to maximize wounds and cause death.
The Palestinian Authority and anti-Israel Arabs in Jerusalem do not need terrorist cells when “resisters” use social media to reach hundreds of thousands of Arabs in Jerusalem as well as in Judea, Gaza and Samaria, with a single simple post.

Islamic State also killed 120 of its own members, most of them foreign fighters trying to return home, in the last two months, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Department of Justice inspector general Michael Horowitz
Earlier this year, 47 inspectors general — the officials charged with fighting corruption, waste, and wrongdoing in federal agencies — sent a letter to Issa’s committee complaining that organizations ranging from the EPA to the Justice Department were impeding their investigations by withholding information — despite the fact that federal law specifically forbids withholding that information. These are not a bunch of Republican operatives trying to score a few political points: Those 47 inspectors general comprise more than half of all such officials, and many who signed the letter were appointed by President Barack Obama. Their complaint is that the federal agencies treat them more or less like they do . . . members of Congress: thwarting them, withholding documents, obstruction investigations.
Michael Horowitz, the inspector general for the Justice Department, came to the Oversight Committee practically begging them for a means by which the DOJ – the federal law-enforcement department — might be forced to follow the laws that it is supposed to be enforcing. “It is very clear to me,” he testified, “just as it is to the Inspectors General community, that the Inspector General Act of 1978 entitles inspectors general to access all documents and records within the agency’s possession. Each of us firmly believes that Congress meant what it said in Section 6(a) of the IG Act: that Inspectors General must be given complete, timely, and unfiltered access to agency records.” But under the leadership of Attorney General Eric Holder, the DOJ did no such thing. Horowitz notes that the DOJ specifically tried to withhold information related to the investigation of Operation Fast and Furious.
[. . .]
The IRS is institutionally corrupt in its dealings with everyone from Congress to the national archivist. Nobody can keep track of how many different versions of the “lost” e-mail stories the IRS’s operatives have told, though Issa has tried. Republicans tried to get a special prosecutor for the investigation, but were thwarted by the Democrats. There would be no need for a special prosecutor if the regular prosecutors — at the DOJ – were doing their jobs, but the Obama administration has no interest in pulling on any of these threads: Not when it knows that IRS agents were misusing public resources to campaign for Barack Obama.
