Slain Officer Randolph Holder came from a long line of cops — and recently told a relative he wasn’t afraid of the risks of the job despite the danger he faced on the street.
“He loved being a cop,” said cousin Natalie Andrews, who lives across the street from Holder in Far Rockaway.
“My father was talking to him [recently] and asked him, `Are you sure you want to be a cop?’ He said, `Yes, this is my passion. I’m not afraid. I can handle it.’”
Holder was killed in the line of duty Tuesday night in East Harlem, fearlessly running into the face of danger and a report of shots fired.

Not only was Officer Holder the son of a cop, his grandfather was a cop too, Commissioner Bill Bratton said.

He added that his son was planning to buy a house, and that he had dated Malika Clarke-Yarde, 33, since they were both 14 years old in Guyana before recently parting ways.
But the couple remained close, with Randolph helping her raise her child even though he was not the father, she said.

The career criminal and gangbanger accused of pumping a fatal bullet into the head of an NYPD cop Tuesday night dodged jail on a recent drug bust that could have landed him years behind bars — with the judge instead sending him to rehab,

Howard had more than 25 arrests under his belt at the time, including for drugs and assault.
“He’s been in and out of jail. You’ll probably have to talk to the district attorney’s office about why he’s out,” Bratton said, before clarifying that it’s a judge’s ultimate decision whether to place a suspect in a diversion program since the Rockefeller drug laws were amended in 2009.

Detectives had already been seeking Howard, 30, in connection with the Sept. 1 shooting in the 23rd Precinct where Holder worked, sources said.
Detectives have recovered an extended 30-clip magazine from the East River that they believe Howard tossed after the shooting, sources said.

Randolph Holder, 33, a five-year veteran of the force who was assigned to the Housing unit, responded to a 911 call of gunfire between two rival gangs at 420 E. 102nd St. at about 9 p.m., according to law enforcement sources.
When officers arrived on the scene, the warring groups split up and scattered, with one suspect robbing a bicycle at gunpoint.
That gunman led cops on a chase up First Avenue and then over a footbridge at 120th Street and the FDR Drive.
The suspect made it over to the East River side of the bridge and shot at the cops, striking Holder in the forehead.
Holder’s partner returned fire, wounding the gunman in the leg and buttocks. The suspect was apprehended at East 124th Street.

Holder was a resident of the Rockaways who immigrated from Guyana with his father.

Tyrone Howard, 30, already had numerous prior convictions for drug-related offenses and was wanted for a September shooting when police say he shot and killed Holder. Howard, who was wounded in the leg during the incident, was released from the hospital and into police custody earlier in the day.
[. . .]
Around 8:30 p.m., two housing officers witnessed individuals firing weapons at each other and radioed for assistance. Police say Howard was one of the men and fled on foot when he realized police were on their way. Before too long, Howard allegedly stole a bike from another man, threatening him with a gun, as he tried to speed up his getaway. Holder responded to the call for assistance along with another officer, and the two began questioning a trio of individuals on a walkway. After realizing the men had nothing to do with the call, Holder and his partner began to walk away when cops say Howard approached the men, got off his bike and fired the shot that struck Holder in the forehead and killed him. Howard then allegedly turned toward the second officer, at which point he was wounded and apprehended.
