Fans couldn't wait to start reading Grey
The original trilogy caused a sensation when it was catapulted from secret vice to public notoriety.
Voracious readers went from clandestine reading on their kindles to openly flaunting the book on public transport. So, get ready to see a lot of the new book cover everywhere as the latest instalment in the steamy saga hits bookshelves today.
The recent film was criticised for toning down the sex scenes and paled into comparison with shocking scenes in recent film Nymphomaniac, but Grey looks set to rectify all that.
It certainly doesn't spare readers' blushes and even author E.L. James, herself, admits that they should brace themselves.
"Christian might have some surprises in store for them," she warns.
Whereas she was an innocent, at least in the beginning, Grey is a man who knows what he wants from the start and is already experienced in all the explicit acts.
The earlier parts of the book are more confined to Christian's inner fantasies as he lures Anastasia in. He wrestles with his excitement during one memorable meal.
EXCERPT FROM GREY:
"As she tips the oyster into her mouth my body hardens.
"She asks me if I've chosen oysters deliberately, knowing their reputed aphrodisiac qualities. 'I don't need an aphrodisiac near you,'" he replies but he is thinking " Yeah, I could f*** you right now."
Dakota Johnson blindfolded in the Fifty Shades film
Obviously, as the book progresses the scenes and descriptions become increasingly graphic and extreme.
"Maybe this will stop if I fetter, f**k, and flog her...and not necessarily in that order," Christian says in one scene, before launching into a graphic description of his sexual fantasies.
As well as the numerous S&M scenes between the two main characters, there are references to others like Mrs. Robinson and "her large rubber strap-on.”
Readers more used to all the X-rated scenes being filtered through Anastasia's female sensibility may be unsettled by Christian's more aggressive voice.
Despite all this, the presumably unshockable E.L. James didn't choose any of these scenes when she was asked recently what surprised her most about writing the new book.
"The biggest surprise for me was Christian's relationship with his brother Elliot, which was a lot closer than I Had imagined," she admitted.
"That was fun to write about."
Somehow, we doubt that it is what eager readers will be most looking forward to…

[From film review]
The four-hour film caused huge controversy on its release last year.
It wasn't just the numerous explicit scenes of a variety of sexual practices, nor the unflinching camera-work which left no doubt that real sex was happening on the screen.
Rumours started flying about how fully the major Hollywood stars involved in the film, like Uma Thurman, Jamie Bell and Shia Laboeuf, had participated in the graphic scenes, before it was eventually revealed that porn star doubles were used for all the X-rated close-ups.
Even so, the film is not for the faint-hearted.
