The Summer of the Spanish Writer

Published 2001

The first of these two novels of adult love takes place in Westchester County near Ossining NY. A woman who married her high school sweetheart meets a high school classmate, who moved to Italy and is a fine arts painter. The narrator immediately falls in love with the painter experiencing passionate love for the first time. This novel shows how humans can live for many years and be unaware of their own emotions. Extreme emotional attachments to the man and to her religious upbringing makes for a difficult period. Coaching from a married woman friend who regularly has affairs does not help this emotional wreck make any sense of her life. The excitement builds as her doctor husband also has an life epiphany. Her college student daughter's social problems add to the tension. All dissonance is conveniently wrapped up in the last pages. Nothing is unnatural in this portrayal of
modern life in the suburbs of New York City. de Matteo shows that the more things change the more they stay the same.

The second novel takes place in Westchester and The Hamptons on Long Island New York. This one is written in the first person with two first persons. Religion has a major role in this one also. A single woman is pursued by a nice man who wants to marry her. She has no feelings for the man and considers him a friend. He shows a complete lack of awareness of her feelings. Her woman friend by chance (the co-star of this printed movie) is married to a lawyer who is floundering in his life. He blames all his problems on his wife who accepts the blame. The single friend tries to make her see how misguided she is but cannot bring her to make any changes. The married woman falls in love with a man who has a secret which shatters her when it is revealed. The single woman gets involved with the Spanish Writer who has an unhappy ending. Adult love is as messy as young love.

Mara di Sandro De Matteo is a great cook and teacher. She shows a keen awareness of adult human emotions in these two novels. She shares her recipes and videos of her travels on her blog
