School's struggling with psychologist shortage

Boston News, Weather, Sports | FOX 25 | MyFoxBoston

SPECIAL REPORT (MyFoxBoston.com) -- With continued concerns of school violence, the front line to preventing the next tragedy could be school psychologists, identifying serious issues and working with children before it's too late, but FOX25's Sorboni Banerjee investigated and found that schools in Massachusetts are not even close to having the recommended number of psychologists present.
Schools struggle to meet the mental health needs of students and heartbreaking scenes after school shootings often leave parents wondering how that could happen.
Andria Amador is assistant director of Behavioral Health Services for Boston Public Schools, and president of the Massachusetts School Psychologists Association. She says schools are "always struggling to meet the needs of students."
Massachusetts falling short
With a million Massachusetts students and approximately 900 school psychologists, there's only one psychologist per 1,100 students, which is well below the national guideline of one per 500- to 700 students.
"All districts are obligated to have special education services to meet the needs of students with specialized needs. That could range across academic, behavioral health motor needs so each district has those to care for the needs of those students," Amador said.
The numbers may be even worse depending on the district, in some cases, staff members are working in administrative roles and not giving direct care to kids. In addition to tight budgets, finding child psychiatrists isn't easy, there are only 7,000 in the entire country.
Dr. Ellen Braaten, who is the director of the Learning and Emotional Assessment Program at Mass. General said, "It's critical because one out of four people will have a lifetime prevalence of mental health issue and half of those cases start before the age of 14.”
She'll be the first to tell you that staffing at schools isn't the only issue.
or example, in the clinic I direct at Mass. General, it's a 6 to 12 month wait to get seen," she said.

A mother desperate for help
Jackie Johnson was desperate for help. Her son has a complex history of problems, which included uncontrollable anger from as young as the age of four, and it surged as soon as he woke up each day.
"It was stressful every aspect hour after hour after hour an explosion an insult fighting it was exhausting so sigh and it would start all over again the next day,” she said.
At school, she says he was just labeled a trouble maker and it took the family years to realize he needed professional help.
Experts say that's typical, a lack of education and resources adds up. And even when trouble's spotted, because of the long waits for clinical treatment, many families are forced to just go to the emergency room.
"It's kind of a patchwork system of going to the emergency room getting prescription short term help crisis management and then hoping to get in to see someone,” Braaten said.
Therefore, families are left dealing with psychotic episodes one meltdown at a time and their kids and potentially others are left in danger. But parents like Johnson are not ready to give up.
“The process was so painful, when you send your child to treatment, something in your DNA changes, it is so emotional and painful and scary and yet the overwhelming hope that there's a better day ahead," she said.
Schools are trying to get creative: Boston Public Schools tell FOX25 they have already created a framework in some districts using their partnerships with hospitals and mental health organizations to augment resources, so they may better address the needs of all students before a tragedy occurs

Control Freaks Run Government, Take Lessons From Psychiatrists

Here is unsolicited testimony from award winning syndicated writer, author, and corruption fighter Michelle Malkin. For several years I explain to anyone who asks that a range of organizations including but not limited to police, FBI informants, and associates of crime families harass me with the objective of controlling me. They are assisted by psychologists and psychiatrists, professional control freaks. They try to have me arrested using women as bait and other nefarious means. They provoke me disturbing my sleep every one or two hours, and cause my computer to crash every one or two minutes. They insult, ridicule, and humiliate me. The end is to control my life, after 44 years of relentless character assassination and harassment. Not much left for them to control. Lacking common sense does not deter them from their continuing criminal harassment.

Police Psychologist, and Psychiatrist Criminal Abuses

There may be a pattern to the surveillance. It is not just ordinary police surveillance or ordinary FBI surveillance or ordinary crime family surveillance. It appears to be a police and/or FBI, or crime family psychologist or psychiatrist. There is a legal difference between the two. But they both see themselves as omniscient, morally superior and above state and US laws. These people are usually ignorant of laws which regulate their behavior. Because they work with the police and/or the FBI or a crime family (who would believe that a psychiatrist works for a crime family?) they are not held accountable to laws they violate. The FBI and the police seldom if ever apply laws to psychologists or psychiatrists even if they work for crime families. Occasionally a psychiatrist is charged with unlawful sex with a patient, but that is because of the strength of the women's movement.

The police and the FBI along with civilians, journalists, lawyers, share the inflated misguided opinion of psychologists and psychiatrists. They prance about society conducting evaluations, provocations, testing. All of that violates one or another state or US law. Evaluations without consent violate state and US privacy laws. Provocations can be a crime or a proximate cause of a crime or a tort. Testing can be both, one or the other. How many serious crimes result from psychiatric provocations?

After attending a reunion from a high school class 50th anniversary celebration I recognized a possible pattern. At the reunion I introduced myself to people I did not know or recognize. One woman revealed she attended the college I did. While speaking with her she introduced me to her husband. He said he was a therapist and that he knew I was "bipolar." How he knew that is an example of what is wrong with these people. I never met the guy before. Was he conducting surveillance of me for any period of time? Psychiatrists and psychologists are interviewed by journalists who seek an opinion of celebrities or suspects in crimes. The therapists freely give their opinions without ever having met the person about whom they make diagnoses. They see nothing wrong with doing this on national TV. Similarly this guy walked up to me and made a diagnosis without any rational basis not even in the nonsense that is psychiatric illnesses. See, e.g., Whores of the Court, by Boston University Psychology Professor Margaret Hagan. I suspect that what they call bipolar ailment is simply humans experiencing emotions. If psychiatry was present throughout history most if not all of the great religious leaders, scientists, explorers, and artists would have been in institutions.

I told this unsolicited therapist I did not believe in psychiatry. That did not discourage him. His wife appeared to be on some psychiatric drugs. She was subdued and reacted slowly to speech. I suspected this guy had psychological control over his wife. She was convinced that she had some illness, and needed to take drugs. She also enjoyed alcoholic beverages. So she was very mellow. I felt sympathy for her and antipathy toward the man. He was persistent and tried to strike up a conversation about "my illness." I told him again and again I did not believe in psychiatric mumbo jumbo.
I moved away to speak with others and stayed away from him  and his wife. That was the first evening of the reunion, Friday. We had met in the hotel's lounge and it was crowded. The next evening was the main event, a cocktail party with a buffet, followed by a sit down dinner and dance with entertainment. I spent about 45 minutes taking photographs. I got some food and realized I had not chosen a place to sit. I was too busy taking photographs. I met the sister of a man I knew in high school. I told her I had no place to sit. She told me she and her date had no place either. I spoke with one of the organizers and explained our situation.

We were directed to a table with three seats. The therapist man was sitting there with his wife. Even if he was a real therapist, what kind of rational person walks up to strangers and begins doing therapy at a party? Was this guy projecting his psychiatric ailments on others? I smiled and put my messenger bag down and went to get my jacket. When I returned the seat next to the sister of my friend, was taken by a woman who turned out to be a psychiatrist. She and the "therapist" were having an animated conversation in front of my face. I was sitting between them. I asked the man if he wanted to sit next to the woman. He told me he was with his wife, as if I did not know. Did he think I was interested in picking up his wife? Perhaps but I wanted to sit next to the sister of my friend. We seemed to relate to one another about some personal issues.

It did not happen. They continued to talk to one another over my face while I ate alone. Then I began recording video of the speakers. It turned out to be a good seat for that. Nonetheless it was a curious situation. When I spoke to the sister a week after the reunion, she asked me, "What was that all about?" I said I did not know. I did not tell her I think it was one more (successful) attempt to keep me isolated as the same criminals do where I live now.
On Saturday February 9, 2013 I met a couple that reminded me of that couple at the reunion. The woman was like the wife of the uninvited therapist. She seemed to have no self esteem and was under some  drugs or alcohol, and was totally dependent on her husband. This man suggested that I go to Cambridge Common where homeless people hang out to find someone to speak with. That is the profile of two of the crime families, i.e., "He's homeless." and "He's mentally ill." Here are  psychologists and psychiatrists violating state and US laws abusing the police powers of their police and FBI employers, abusing civilians.

Some people know about the abominations of Hitler and Stalin using psychiatry. They believe that American psychiatrists and psychologists have had their genes cleansed of mendacity, greed and sadism. Seldom do any civil rights attorneys, or ACLU lawyers consider psychiatric abuses an outrage or an abuse. They share the inflated misguided image of psychologists and psychiatrists as always doing good deeds. It appears that the harassment I experience for 30-40 years is not just plain  old ordinary police and crime family abuses. It appears that it is directed by psychiatrists and psychologists.

Where Are the Helping Professions?

What is taking so long to see some diagnoses Tweeted from media savvy psychiatrists and psychologists who've never met the mother or the son? Why don't these professional experts that are allowed to predict the future in court, reveal what was in the woman's mind? We await their science based facts to help us understand why the woman allegedly did what she is accused of doing. Why didn't the caring professions prevent this tragic event? Why wasn't she under surveillance? If police can watch me 24/7 she too should have been watched.

Journalists, Teachers and Psychologists are Bullies

Journalists, Teachers and Psychologists are Bullies

School officials and politicians focus on bullying by students of other students. Not only journalists, but also teachers, psychologists, police and politicians are bullies too. Boston Phoenix January 22, 2010 edition, editorial headline reads, "Teabagger Brown Triumphs." This is a slang term for a sex act known mostly to homosexuals. The alleged alternate paper uses the term prominently toward a public official. What lesson does this teach? I wrote to them about previous use by a film reviewer. They are intolerant of criticism as many "superior beings" are in MA. Liberals whine about hate speech, while they utter extremely hateful speech, a form of bullying.

Psychologist Mumbo-Jumbo

"Prof. Gilbert believes that the limited mental capacities of humans impose limits on the accuracy of predictions about the emotional impact of future events.
[. . .]
Professor Gilbert does not believe humans have the capacity to systematically prevent errors in mental simulations.
[. . .]
Despite the failure of predictions to account for dynamic circumstances, humans tend to adapt or rationalize outcomes to make themselves feel better.
[. . .]
Human beings are all basically the same.”

It is curious that a psychologist lectures law students about the inability of humans to predict the future accurately. But he fails to note the nonsensical practice of psychiatrists and psychologists making predictions in court which are used to determine taking freedom from or granting freedom to a person. Hello?

What is most hilarious about his comments is "Human beings are all basically the same." Then why not incarcerate all of them?

Psychiatry: Causing or Solving Problems?

The drug industry and the psychiatric industry claim to have solutions for all problems -- drugs or therapy. They never recognize they may cause the problems. When did military operations begin having mental health clinics in battle fields? Like accountants making medical decisions at HMOs, here the military allows mental health counselors to make military decisions. Politicians are unable to accept accountability. Judges fear getting it wrong so they delegate decision-making to court psychologists and psychiatrists. These false prophets claim a moral superiority and knowledge of the future. When they are wrong there is no accountability. Here military prophets may be the cause of three deaths. But you'd never know that from the way that journalists report facts. The Conformist Party has taken control of the nation.

Exploiting Psychiatric Hospitals

Exploiting Psychiatric Hospitals

Psychiatry is a boondoggle. Just because this man was a patient in a hospital does not mean he is mentally ill. Psychologists boast that some hospitals are used instead of jails for "harmless" defendants. Oh? The main problem is that psychiatric illnesses are fake, made up for business purposes. Read BU Margaret Hagan's "Whores of the Court," e.g. Using 14-year-old volunteers is an improvement over using state prison inmate on work release who used to rape and steal from the patients. Vulnerable patients have been abused for many years. Hiding criminals in mental hospitals, is a pervasive problem. Psychiatry needs a lot of scrutiny to end the financial and human rights abuses. Politicians get a lot of money to pass laws for the psychiatric industry. They own some of the legislators.

Looking in All the Wrong Places

The New York-New Jersey Port of Authority will have two full-time
psychologists ($300,000 one year contract) watching construction
workers at the lower Manhattan World Trade Center site. (Angela Montefinise
and Ginger Adam Otis, "WTC psych-out," New York Post, September 28, 2008)
"Workers will also be asked to report out-of-character behavior among their
colleagues to counselors."
There is a greater need for psychiatric scrutiny of investment
bankers, politicians, and journalists who are sociopathic liars,
megalomaniacs, and egoists. When will psychologists be placed in the
House of Representatives, the Senate and state legislative chambers?
They do more harm to the nation than construction workers.

Rotenberg Shock Tapes Destroyed

Rotenberg Shock Tapes Destroyed

The spokesman for the Rotenberg School said "There is no
obligation to hold on to these tapes for any length of time."
(Patricia Wen, "Report says shock tapes destroyed against order,"
Boston Globe, January 18, 2008) Oh?
Would that be a psychological obligation, a public relations
obligation or a legal obligation? Few psychiatrists or psychologists
(or PR flacks) know the laws that protect vulnerable persons. They
violate the laws with no curbs from law enforcement due to
institutionalized discrimination among police agencies. Psychologists
operate in a world without the US Constitution and without state laws.
They believe they are superior beings with superior knowledge of right
and wrong conduct, thoughts and speech. They determine what is proper
behavior. They ignore laws because they believe they are above the
laws.
Here is an opportunity for the state to teach these arrogant
professionals who abuse vulnerable students because of their unchecked
power. It is long over due for the state authorities to exercise their
lawful authority to curb these institutionalized abuses. Obstruction
of justice is a crime.

Report says shock tapes destroyed against order
By Patricia Wen
Boston Globe Staff
January 18, 2008

Top officials at the Judge Rotenberg Educational Center destroyed
videotapes at the focus of an investigation into alleged abuse at one
of its group homes after being ordered by state investigators to
preserve the tapes, according to a report obtained by the Globe.

The tapes, a compilation of footage from video cameras inside the
group home in Stoughton, recorded an August 2007 incident in which
staff wrongfully administered dozens of shocks to two emotionally
disturbed teenagers, after a caller posing as a supervisor professed
to be delivering orders from the school's director and a chief aide.
One student received 77 shocks, the other 29.

An investigator with the Disabled Persons Protection Commission, which
examines abuse allegations and can refer cases for criminal
prosecution, viewed the tapes as part of her inquiry and asked
Rotenberg officials if she could have a copy of them, according to the
commission's report on the incident. School officials declined, saying
that the school "did not want any possibility of the images getting
into the media," according to the report, which was obtained by the
Globe.

The investigator then directed the school to preserve a copy of the
tapes for use by State Police conducting a criminal investigation. She
was later told by a trooper, who apparently attempted to view them
that "the images were not preserved by JRC."

Matthew Israel, founder and director of the school, did not return a
phone call yesterday to discuss the tapes, but a school spokesman,
Ernest Corrigan, said that school officials did not want to keep the
tapes out of fear they would end up in the hands of the media or on
the Internet, further upsetting the lives of the two victims in the
Aug. 26 incident. He said investigators from the commission held an
"exit interview" on Sept. 30 with school staff, leading them to
believe there was no more need to keep the tapes.

In an interview with the Globe earlier this week, Israel said the
tapes had been reviewed by several investigators soon after the August
incident and were not preserved because the investigation "seemed to
be finished."

He said the school normally keeps its recordings for about 30 days and
then reuses the tapes.

Israel gave a similar explanation at the State House on Wednesday when
asked about the tapes at a public hearing on a bill to restrict shock
treatments at the school.

However, he did not mention being asked by state investigators to
preserve the tapes.

The destruction of the tapes has led some critics of the school, the
only one in the nation that uses shock treatments for special
education students, to call for an investigation into whether Israel
or his staff engaged in obstruction of justice.

"I believe the tape was intentionally destroyed because it was
incriminating," said Senator Brian A. Joyce, a Democrat from Milton,
who has long sought to ban shock therapy at the school. "I intend to
ask the attorney general to investigate."

Lawyers with experience in state and federal prosecutions say that
obstruction-of-justice investigations can be complex, but that they
center largely on why a piece of evidence was destroyed.

"Any investigation would want to look into intent very closely," said
Michael Ricciuti, a former prosecutor now in private practice in
Boston.

The disclosure about the tapes occurs as the Disabled Persons
Protection Commission is preparing for a public release of its
findings Tuesday.

Its report concludes that one of the teenage students was severely
physically and emotionally abused by the incident. The commission has
referred the case to the Norfolk district attorney's office.

The Rotenberg school has more than 200 students, most of whom are
mentally retarded, autistic, or emotionally disturbed. It has about
900 staff members.

Started by Israel in 1971, the residential school has attracted
nationwide controversy for its unorthodox behavioral-modification
techniques, which include the administration of two-second skin shocks
as a way to deter violent or disruptive behavior.

Critics say that such shocks are often given for relatively minor
infractions, such as swearing or leaving a seat without permission.

After failing twice in the past two decades to close the school,
opponents have embraced a bill pending in the Legislature that would
allow shocks only to stop students from hurting themselves or others.

Leo Sarkissian - executive director of The Arc of Massachusetts, a
grass-roots organization representing people with intellectual
disabilities - said he was outraged to learn that investigators no
longer have the tapes, saying the destruction of the recordings shows
"a lack of integrity" by Israel and his staff.

But Corrigan, spokesman for the school, said such assertions are
unfair, adding that school officials voluntarily set up video cameras
to monitor the staff and student performance.

"There is no obligation to hold on to these tapes for any length of
time," he said.

Dr. Phil Not Unique

Dr. Phil Not Unique

Dr. Phil is not unique abusing the privacy rights of persons accused of
mental illness. (DAVID K. LI, "BETRAYAL," New York Post, January 10, 2008, page
9) In some states and under US law it is unlawful to reveal the medical records
of a person without consent.
Dr. Phil is among the many unlicensed persons who make diagnosis that
journalists publish in their rush to demonize vulnerable people. Police,
prosecutors, relatives, neighbors and lovers regularly become psychiatric
experts for journalists who want an explanation for a person's behavior.
Journalists share the misguided notion that mental illness causes
violent behavior. They refuse to scrutinize the abuses of the psychiatric
industry, the academic research industry and the psychiatric drug cartels.
More and more research shows that the psychiatric drugs are the cause of
violence and death. Yet the economic power of the drug companies overrules the
duty of journalists to reveal this evil to the public.

BETRAYAL
New York Post
By DAVID K. LI

January 10, 2008 -- Britney Spears' fuming family turned to the wrong person
when they tapped blabbermouth Dr. Phil to counsel their daughter - he's not even
a licensed psychologist.

TV host Phil McGraw allowed his license to lapse in Texas and never had one in
California, where he tapes his syndicated show, officials in Austin and
Sacramento said yesterday.

When "Dr. Phil" first aired in 2002, California regulators - concerned about
McGraw's folksy, off-the-cuff commentary - convened a panel to rule if he was
acting as a clinical psychologist and in need of a license.

"It was determined what he was doing was more entertainment than psychology,"
said Russ Heimerich, a spokesman for the California Board of Psychology,
explaining why state officials passed on regulating "Dr. Phil."

So even though Dr. Phil had been classified as a showman and not a shrink,
Spears' parents still sent McGraw into Britney's Los Angeles hospital room in
hopes he could treat their daughter.

Instead, McGraw tried to turn Spears' problems into a ratings blockbuster, the
livid parents' spokeswoman said yesterday.

"Well, what's wrong with Dr. Phil's statement is that he made a statement [to
the press]," said Lou Taylor, business manager for parents Jamie and Lynne
Spears.

"The family basically extended an invitation of trust for him to come in as a
resource to support them, not to go out and make public statements," she told
the "Today" show.

Taylor said McGraw violated family trust, and made it harder for Britney to seek
help.

"Any statement publicly that he made, because he was brought in under the cloak
of trust, are just inappropriate . . . we feel like, to set the record straight,
we need to say that," she said.

"I mean, here you have Britney, that needs to have some security somewhere, that
every single thing she does and every single person she has a relationship with
doesn't become an opportunity to be exploited. I mean, when do you ever rest in
that if you're constantly in fear of being exploited?"

McGraw, through his LA spokesman, yesterday declined to defend himself against
the Spears' accusations.

After briefly chatting with Spears this past weekend, McGraw said she needs
help.

"My meeting with Britney and some family members this morning in her room at
Cedars leaves me convinced more than ever that she is in dire need of both
medical and psychological intervention," Dr. Phil said in a statement,
publicizing his meeting with Spears.

"She was released moments before my arrival and was packing when I entered the
room," the doctor adds. "We visited for about an hour before I walked with her
to her car. I am very concerned for her."

Earlier this week, McGraw said he pulled the plug on a "Dr. Phil" show about
Britney out of concern for her family.

"Because the Spears situation is too intense at this time, and out of
consideration to the family, I have made the decision not to move forward with
the taping at this particular time," McGraw said.

Jamie and Lynne Spears also dispute reports they agreed to go on "Dr. Phil" this
week. Taylor said McGraw asked them to appear, but they didn't accept his
invite.

"I felt that, too, it was inappropriate for him to even be self-serving in
bringing something like that up," Taylor said. "Because that would not be a
vector to get Britney help."

Wagging the Court Dog

Wagging the Court Dog

The tail wags the dog in courts. Competency evaluations are a lucrative
business. (Dave Wedge, "Priest trial delayed for 33rd time," Boston Herald,
August 22, 2007) Competency is an issue of fact for the trier of facts. Judges
to avoid accountability by allowing psychiatrists to make the "decision."
If evaluations were scientific there would be no need for multiple
evaluations. Moreover they need to be done at the time of trial not at the time
of arrest or arraignment. In this case the advice of an alleged expert is being
used to delay the proceeding. The defense can argue that the defendant did not
get a speedy trial and blame it on the court. How convenient. One more way to
protect the guilty and abuse the innocent.

Priest trial delayed for 33rd time
By Dave Wedge
Boston Herald Chief Enterprise Reporter
Wednesday, August 22, 2007

A Worcester victims rights group is fuming after the case against an alleged
pedophile priest deemed incompetent to stand trial was continued for a 33rd
time.
The molestation case against the Rev. John Szantyr has dragged on in
Worcester District Court for four years and was again continued Monday because
prosecutors didn't receive a doctor's report in time for the hearing.
Szantyr, who faces charges he molested an altar boy in Worcester in the
mid-1980s, has already been ruled incompetent by a judge, but District Attorney
Joseph Early Jr.'s office called for a new evaluation "due to information that
was brought to our attention."
Among the new information are reports that Szantyr, 76, was seen walking at
a rest stop just minutes after he appeared in court in a wheelchair and that he
has continued to oversee religious services in Connecticut. Szantyr, who
reportedly is too ill to feed, clothe and bathe himself, also recently renewed
his Connecticut driver's license, court filings show.

Boston Globe Bullying Editorial

Boston Globe Bullying Editorial

The Globe's opposition to bullying makes an erroneous assumption which
ensures a flawed conclusion. (Boston GLOBE EDITORIAL, "Standing up to bullies,"
April 26, 2007)
Recognizing that "some children get picked on for being smart" the Globe
fails to recognize that adults get picked on for the same reason when exposing
illogical policies and corrupt actions by politicians, police and journalists.
Do "schools, churches, parents, coaches, clubs, friends, and others who
rise up and say bullying is unacceptable" extend to condemning psychiatric
bullies, teacher bullies, police bullies, elected official bullies, etc? Giving
government and psychiatric bullies a pass fails "to ensure that fear is not a
barrier to
participating in everyday life." This is especially important under a one-party
government as in Massachusetts.
Does the Olweus approach include intervening when the bully is a teacher, a
police officer, a psychiatrist or a politician? This is another case of do as we
say but ignore what we do. Young people are aware of the hypocrisy of the adult
world at least as much as some of the smart kids years ago when there was no
internet or IM.
This perspective on bullying is one more business created by the
psychiatric industry, a continuing boondoggle for the drug companies to promote
more illnesses.

Standing up to bullies
April 26, 2007

MANY FACTORS led to the tragic school shootings at Columbine and Virginia Tech.
But part of the poisonous mix was bullying, which can be a risk factor for
violence in young people. The nation is left to wonder what would have happened
if someone had intervened. Short-circuiting bullying is a big job that demands
more respect and restraint from children and adults. But it's also a vital job.

Tales of bullying are told time and again. There are youngsters who put up with
it. Maybe they outgrow the abuse. Maybe they don't. Or there's the story about
the bullied victim who throws an undreamed-of punch and hits the bully hard
enough to make this point: I can be more violent than you are. And there are the
kids who just watch, maintaining a corrosive code of silence.
