Ground Zero Vendor, Mohammed, Charges $20 For Hot Dog

Mohammed of the Changing High Prices

[From article]
Ron Wolfgang, who is in charge of security for the Alliance for Downtown New York, said, there have been "five times since May 13 where we've observed altercations on the street over the prices being charged for hot dogs, pretzels, water, soda."
NBC 4 New York's own cameras captured the price of a hot dog changing by the minute: $3 for some, $30 for others.
Several customers also accused him of short-changing them after overcharging them. One woman pointed out that he had only given her $5 in change when he was supposed to hand her $8; another woman said he didn't even give her change at all.
One woman named Ruth said, "He gave me $5 back, and I thought, '$15 for a pretzel and a water?'"
When a self-identified NBC 4 New York reporter asked the price of a hot dog, Mohammed said $3. When asked why the price changes, he claimed not to speak English -- even though cameras had captured him speaking English earlier,
[. . .]
Part of the problem is that Mohammed's prices aren't posted, as required by the city's Department of Consumer Affairs. At a hot dog cart around the corner, for example, there's no question how much a hot dog costs -- it's listed at $1.
The Department of Consumer Affairs encourages anyone who is charged more than the posted price -- or encounters a stand with no price listed at all -- to file a complaint at nyc.gov/consumers or to call 311.

Can't Tell The Middle East Players Without A Program

[From article]
The forces that do not want a U.S. nuclear deal with Iran, nor any U.S. detente with Iran, are impressive.
Among them are the Israelis and their powerful lobby AIPAC, the Saudis and their Sunni allies on the Persian Gulf, a near unanimity of Republicans and a plurality of Democrats in Congress.
[. . .]
First, the alternative to a truce — breaking off of negotiations, doubling down on demands Iran dismantle all nuclear facilities, tougher sanctions — inevitably leads to war. And we all know it.
[. . .]
Why Iran wants to avoid war is obvious. Given U.S. air, missile and naval power, and cyberwarfare capabilities, a war with the United States would do to Iran what we did to Iraq, smash it up, set it back decades, perhaps break up the country.
Some mullahs may be fanatics, but Iran is not run by fools.
[. . .]
In the war to expel the Islamic State from Iraq, we and Iran are on the same side.
[. . .]
Consider Yemen.
This week, the Saudis sent their air force against the Houthi rebels who had seized the capital of Sanaa, driven out the president, and have now driven south to Aden to take over half of the country.
Why is the Saudi air force attacking the Houthis?
The Houthis belong to a sect close to the Shiite and are supported by Iran.

Mosque Near Ground Zero?

[From article]
"More revealing is the fact that Rauf himself has refused to sign a straightforward pledge to "repudiate the threat from authoritative sharia to the religious freedom and safety of former Muslims," a pledge issued nine months ago by ex-Muslims under threat for their "apostasy." That refusal is a tacit admission that Rauf believes that sharia trumps such fundamental Western principles as freedom of conscience"

Looking in All the Wrong Places

Looking in All the Wrong Places

The New York-New Jersey Port of Authority will have two full-time
psychologists ($300,000 one year contract) watching construction
workers at the lower Manhattan World Trade Center site. (Angela Montefinise
and Ginger Adam Otis, "WTC psych-out," New York Post, September 28, 2008)
"Workers will also be asked to report out-of-character behavior among their
colleagues to counselors."
There is a greater need for psychiatric scrutiny of investment
bankers, politicians, and journalists who are sociopathic liars,
megalomaniacs, and egoists. When will psychologists be placed in the
House of Representatives, the Senate and state legislative chambers?
They do more harm to the nation than construction workers.

Outdoing the Big Dig

Outdoing the Big Dig

Wall Street Journal columnist Daniel Henninger calls the wasteful
spending rebuilding the World Trade Center as "the greatest political
and bureaucratic fiasco in the history of the world." (George J.
Marlin, "Bring on the Feds," New York Post, July 9, 2008, page 27) New
York always does it bigger and better. The Big Dig tunnel project in
Boston went from $2 billion to $14 billion and it still leaks.
New York is about 14 times bigger than Boston. It will be a lot
more of taxpayer funds spent with no end in sight. The Spending Other
People's Money Society wins again.
