Cardinal Edward Egan, who led New York’s 2.5 million Catholics as archbishop for nine years, died Thursday. He was 82.
A statement from the archdiocese said the cause of death was cardiac arrest. He was pronounced dead at NYU Langone Medical Center at 2:20 p.m.
Egan, who was brought in from Bridgeport, Conn., in part to shore up the New York Archdiocese’s finances, served as archbishop between 2000 and 2009.
