Magazine Reveals Flaws in K-12 Edcuation

[From article]
This upscale progressive magazine ran a super-long, super-detailed article titled "The Math Revolution." It basically wanted to proclaim the happy news that extraordinary things are taking place in American education.
The Atlantic fell all over itself with enthusiasm. You would reasonably suppose that some fresh winds were blowing, and students in America would actually know how to add and subtract with competence, and maybe even multiply and divide efficiently.
What else does the word "revolution" suggest but wonderful sweeping change? At last, at long last, our public schools will redeem themselves and begin to turn out little math experts.
Then the writer gave it away: "The students are being produced by a new pedagogical ecosystem – almost entirely extracurricular – that has developed online and in the country's rich coastal cities and tech meccas."
[. . .]

Please savor the words "almost entirely extracurricular." In other words, these superior, successful math students are not in essence attending American public schools. They are going outside of American public schools, to something separate, uncontaminated, and therefore superior.
And why would that be necessary? Because American public schools, for many decades, have been a killing field for mathematical achievement. John Saxon became a legend in the late 1980s for his valiant effort to create instruction that would replace the nonsense epidemic in the schools. The Education Establishment resisted Saxon with all of its considerable resources. These officials had come up with New Math circa 1964 and then Reform Math after 1985. All those bad, and very unpopular, approaches have modulated into Common Core Math. All bunk according to many analysts, but that doesn't mean our Education Establishment willingly lets a smidgen of it go.
[. . .]

The point is, they're not getting it in their local public school.
Please note: the Atlantic article is focused on the best and cleverest students. Indeed, they are so very clever that they outwitted the Education Establishment, and beguiled the Atlantic Monthly into telling the truth about K-12.
It has always seemed to me that the Atlantic Monthly is obliviously liberal. Do they even know what they've done? Namely, they revealed that official experts have been running a con for all these decades. This con has been, in general, so successful that highly motivated students must find or create an entirely separate school system.
[. . .]
It's worth asking: how does the Education Establishment do such a bad job? Can we find a common denominator among dozens of separate programs over dozens of years? Yes, and here is the perennial gimmick: to whatever degree possible, mix in complexity and confusion. Typically, that means teaching children an oddball algorithm that is hard to learn and difficult to do. Or teach three different ways to do the same sort of problem.
[. . .]

One of the biggest subjects in education now is STEM and the need for renewed attention to STEM subjects. Often the emphasis is on doing more in middle school and high school. By that time, however, many children have learned to detest and fear STEM subjects. A major theme in John Saxon's battle with the Education Establishment was that their methods stop children from pursuing anything more advanced, whereas students who took Saxon Math were much more likely to study calculus, chemistry, physics, and so on.
The lesson is very plain. Elementary arithmetic is the gateway to later success.
Children do need to start with the elemental and proceed to the more complex. Children need to memorize the multiplication table. They need their "math facts." They need to master a lot of simple stuff so they feel confident about what comes next. Reform Math and Common Core Math show how not to do it. The public schools show how not to do it. That's what the Atlantic Monthly is trying to tell us.
If math were taught efficiently at each level from K to 12, you would see much higher NAEP scores and much greater entry into STEM subjects, and students would not need an extracurricular alternative.

Newspaper Supports Public Records Reform In Massachusetts

Good editorial, an improvement over foxy State Rep. Rogers' essay. It says, "the Senate bill requires agencies that lose such cases pay the legal fees of the plaintiff, an important incentive for compliance." Taxpayers pay for the misconduct of officials, as they did for the 20-years of FBI criminal enterprises enabling Bulger's serial homicides. Where is the incentive to comply? It is unfortunately unlikely the legislature will write and pass a law that restricts their deal-making options. One area omitted is the lack of inclusion of special police e.g., Harvard University campus police in state public records law requirements.

Convening Convention of The States

[From article]
History offers some illustrations: The 1861 Washington Convention proposed an amendment that was never ratified, but its proceedings were generally dignified and they provided us with a “beginning-to-end” pattern for future use. On the other hand, the 1780 Philadelphia “price convention” deadlocked with no resolution. Its members haplessly adjourned to a future time, and when that time came, no one bothered to show up.

New York City Mayor Repeals Welfare Reforms

[From article]
Mayor Bill de Blasio has tried to be cautious when it comes to policing. He worries that a crime spike will produce an angry citywide reaction that would threaten his political career. But when it comes to welfare reform, the other great advance of the Giuliani/Bloomberg years, de Blasio shows no such caution. He has turned the city’s massive Human Resources Administration over to former Legal Aid Society attorney Steven Banks, a leading “welfare rights” advocate, whose principal contribution over the years has been to tie up the city in litigation.
[. . .]
The newly created Mayor’s Office of Workforce Development proposes a vast new program of job training and enhanced “education,” on the theory that a new version of the old failure will reduce inequality in New York. De Blasio’s plan, notes former Giuliani welfare commissioner Jason Turner, “acknowledges that welfare skills training does not work—but then goes on to recommend a ‘new and improved’ version.”
[. . .]
Research from the Manhattan Institute’s Stephen Eide shows that, in the 12 months ending December 2014—corresponding with the mayor’s first year in office—the city’s welfare rolls added a net of more than 10,000 new recipients. The growth is even more alarming than the net figure suggests, since the numbers were still trending downward until May, when Banks was hired; since then, the rolls have grown by 13,000 (see chart).
[. . .]
The NIRA was dismantled when the Supreme Court struck it down as an unconstitutional extension of federal power. De Blasio’s gimcrack proposals may last longer, but they have no better chance of success.

Looking For How To Reform Baltimore?

At least in Baltimore voters elected a black mayor and city council. In Ferguson black citizens didn't even vote. It is not the complete fault of elected officials. Voters determine some of what the politicians do, over time. Why no riots before the death, after so much institutionalized racism as they claim now?

Toya Graham Encourages Her 16-year-old son to go home.

[From article]
Who owns Baltimore’s rage? Some facts: Every member of the Baltimore City Council is a Democrat. Every mayor since 1967 has been a Democrat. Such political homogeneity invites corruption. If some element of the city’s police department is brutal and corrupt, it’s because no one in Baltimore has lifted a finger to stop them.

[. . .]
From where I stand, it’s hard to credit claims that a police force that is nearly 50 percent African-American is somehow hardwired to abuse residents of a majority black city. But if police corruption is a problem in Baltimore, and news reports suggest that it is, the solution to it cannot be running battles between cops and citizens. Rather, the clear solution is better governance. You say you want a revolution. How about electing a Republican or two to the Baltimore City Council? That would be truly radical.

In so much as anyone in Baltimore is angry at the “system,” they should direct their rage where it belongs—an unbroken, five-decade string of one-party rule in the city and a national War on Poverty that has systematically dismantled the black family.

Book Review: Ayaan Hirsi Ali's Effort To Reform Islam

Ayaan Hirsi Ali

[From review]
Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s Heretic: Why Islam Needs a Reformation Now, which, among other theses, points out the intellectual bankruptcy of a political/religious ideology that preaches a return to seventh-century law and disorder while utilizing the tools of twenty-first century Western progress.
[. . .]
Heretic, as its subtitle suggests, is not a third bio but rather Ali’s most academic and aspirational book to date. It clearly and cleverly offers five “amendments” to Islamic orthodoxy in order to alleviate its violent and oppressive tendencies.
[. . .]
Heretic carefully separates Muslims into three categories. “Medina Muslims,” as Ali calls them, are the jihadists and their supporters, who intertwine the faith with seventh-century political and martial order, as Muhammad did during his time in that city. A low-ball estimate puts this population at 48 million, a tiny fraction of the world’s Muslims—but, considering that it took only 19 men armed with box cutters and the “Medina” ideology to bring us 9/11, it’s a number to be concerned about. In the second group are the apostates and heretics, like Ali herself, who have left the faith altogether or are so critical of it that they can no longer be considered “true” Muslims. This population is tiny but growing. Finally, what Ali terms the “Mecca Muslims” comprise the majority of Islam’s adherents. These are the hearts and minds to whom she preaches reform: devout Muslims who desire access to Western thought, education, technology, and civil law, but who find that “pure” Islamic scripture and discipline (or their government’s adoption of sharia law) renders accommodation all but impossible. Torn by this conflict, many of these Muslims find themselves ripe for jihadist plucking: better to side with the devil you kinda know (Medina Islam) than the one you don’t (hell-bound apostasy).
[. . .]

She dedicates whole chapters to diagnosing the five root problems in Islam that manifest themselves via violence and oppression: 1) The Qur’an’s status as the immutable word of God and the infallibility of Muhammad as the last divine messenger; 2) an emphasis on the afterlife over the here and now; 3) sharia’s claims to be a comprehensive system of law governing the spiritual and temporal realms; 4) the obligation of ordinary Muslims to command right and forbid wrong; and 5) the concept of jihad, or holy war.
[. . .]
The intended audience might do better to read Ali’s earlier books first.Page after page is filled with disconcerting statistics.
The second quibble is with Ali’s case for optimism.
[. . .]
Voltaire, Locke, Luther, Spinoza . . . it’s tempting to call Ali the modern incarnation of one or another of these. Yet just being the Ayaan Hirsi Ali of our own time is more than enough: she’s the heretic who risks her life with rich intellectual treatises and memoirs to hasten an ideological reformation that could liberate millions. We ignore her quill to our shame and peril.

Massachusetts Transit Unions Exercise Influence To Thwart Reforms

[From article]
The 6,000-member-strong Carmen’s Union Local 589’s influence and reform-blocking tactics include:
Its political action committee, which poured thousands into the campaign coffers for sitting members of the Transportation Committee and has doled out more than $58,000 in campaign donations to more than 100 politicians and committees since 2014 alone. That’s more than twice the political cash handed out by the powerful Boston Teachers Union during that time.
The union spent nearly $360,000 lobbying Beacon Hill in the past five years and doubled its lobbying budget, bringing on the firm Travaglini, Eisenberg & Kiley for two years as lawmakers debated 2009 transportation reform.
The union has skirted reforms through binding arbitration settlements, which are not subject to approval from any board — an advantage held by no other public unions, outside of the MBTA, in the state.
“In some respects, the MBTA is run by unions rather than management,” said Gregory Sullivan, a former state inspector general and Pioneer Institute’s research director. “The unions have been able to exert tremendous political pressure. It’s almost as though state government has lost control over the MBTA.”

The union has displayed its clout through its endorsements, too, an advantage coveted in local state races. Of the 16 Democrats currently on the committee, seven were blessed by Carmen’s Union backing in each of the last two elections, including Boston representatives Daniel Ryan and Evandro Carvalho last year.
McGee, the only committee member contacted by the Herald to return a call yesterday, said his political ties to the union don’t have an outsized influence on his decision-making.
“I’ve been in the Legislature a long time, and when I look at an issue, I do what I believe is right based on the facts that are in front of me,” said McGee, who also chairs the state Democratic party. “I make decisions based on all the information. And I will continue to do that.”
South Boston state Rep. Nick Collins filed a budget amendment backed by the Carmen’s Union that would keep the MBTA under the requirements of the so-called Pacheco Law, which stymies the T’s ability to hire outside contractors for much-needed repairs. Collins, who’s taken donations and endorsements from the Carmen’s Union, says the union doesn’t “outweigh support from anyone else.”

“The unions regularly trot our their members to campaign for legislators who treat the unions well,” said David Tuerck of the conservative watchdog Beacon Hill Institute.
“They show up at the polling places under order from the unions. It’s all a cozy little family where everyone is scratching everyone else’s back.”
Pam Wilmot of Common Cause said it’s not surprising that the Carmen’s Union Local 589 is donating regularly to Transportation Committee members, who are set to take up Gov. Charlie Baker’s MBTA reform bill — nor is it uncommon for any interest group to target those who regulate their industry.
“But just because that’s the way it is doesn’t make it right,” Wilmot said. “What we want to see is very low contribution limits so these kinds of questions aren’t always raised when legislation is concerned.”
Denise Roth Barber, managing director of the National Institute on Money in State Politics, said when donors give — especially “very strategic” donations to committees and other pols — “they want a seat at the table.”

Sharpton and De Blasio Promote Misguided Police Reforms

On the occasions when FBI informant Sharpton, and New York Mayor De Blasio are not acting the fools, they express misguided solutions to police abuses. They did not think this one through, if they are sincere in their support of civil rights. If there ever was a national, one size fits all police standard, it may dangerously place all police under one command, as the state of Massachusetts did. That allows for one person who may be popularly elected with enormous support to end the freedoms under the constitution. Already the therapeutic state successfully obliterated the First Amendment censoring some words, and pushing vigorously for the end to religious protections. Here Sharpton and de Blasio promote the idea of one police force in the nation. If anyone did get control of that mechanism, it would enable a dictatorship.

[From article]
“There must be national policy and national law on policing,” Mr. Sharpton said. “We can’t go from state to state, we’ve got to have national law to protect people against these continued questions.”
[. . .]
Mr. Sharpton praised the city’s mayor and police chief for bringing the charges, but said the nation couldn’t rely on the judgement of local officials.
“We commend them, but we cannot have a justice system that hopes we have a mayor in the right city or a police chief,” he said. “We have to have one policy that is national.”[. . .]
Mr. de Blasio told reporters. “The vast majority of police do their job well and want to work more closely with the community. Obviously community residents want to work more closely with the police. But we have to create more of a national standard that says we all have to be on the same page.”

Hundred Years of Abuse, Homicides, Rapes, Ends In Florida at Closed Reform School

Buried and forgotten: This December 20, 2013, file photo shows where researchers found some of the remains of 55 people in a graveyard at the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys in Marianna, Florida

[From article]
Dozens of children's bodies exhumed from old graves have begun yielding the shocking secrets of a shuttered Florida reform school, shedding light on decades of abuse, rape and deadly violence.
There was the 6-year-old boy who ended up dead after being sent to work as a house boy. And another boy who escaped but was later found shot to death with a blanket pulled over his body and a shotgun across his legs.
Then there was the 'rape dungeon' where students attending the Arthur G. Dozier School were taken and sexually abused.
What the researchers have learned about the horrific acts carried out at the now closed Marianna institution is outlined in a report released by the University of South Florida as researchers continue grappling with the mystery of the graves and deaths there.[. . .]
It's not an easy project. The school underreported deaths; didn't provide death certificates, names or details in many cases, particularly involving black boys; and simply reported some boys who disappeared as no longer at the school.
And many in the Panhandle community don't want to talk about the school's dark past.
Several of the boys were killed after escape attempts, including Robert Hewitt, whose family lived a few miles from the school. He was hiding in his family's house and men from the school came looking for him several times after the 1960 escape, according to relatives.
The family came home one day to find his covered body lying in a bed. He had a shotgun wound and his father's shotgun was lying across his legs.
There's also the story of 6-year-old George Grissam, who the school sent out to work as a house boy in 1918. He was delivered back to the school unconscious and later died.
George's 8-year-old brother Ernest also disappeared from school records, which simply described him as 'not here.'
Other boys died after severe beatings, being smashed in the head or other injuries. Former inmates and employees interviewed also told researchers about a 'rape dungeon' where boys, some younger than 12, were sexually assaulted.
While many of the cases are nearly a century old, some of the dead have surviving brothers, sisters and other relatives still seeking answers.
'To some of this is history, but for many of the people who are involved it's actually their reality every day,' Kimmerle said. 'They're really committed and moved by this because it's their direct family.'
The first of the bodies to be identified by researchers last summer was 14-year-old George Owen Smith, who was sent to the school after being caught in a stolen car.
In December 1940, George's mother, Frances Smith, sent a letter to the school inquiring after her son's welfare. She received a reply from Superintendent Millard Davison saying that no one knew where the teenager was.
[. . .]
The reform school for boys opened its doors in 1900 on 1,400 acres of land and closed down only in 2011 for budget reasons.
Some former students from the 1950s and 1960s have for at least a decade accused employees and guards at the school of physical and sexual abuse, but the Florida Department of Law Enforcement concluded after an investigation that it couldn't substantiate or dispute the claims because too much time had passed.
Many former Dozier inmates from that era call themselves 'The White House Boys' after the white building where they say the worst abuse took place.

Massachusetts Republican Governor-Elect Joins Democrats Supporting Immigration "Reform," No Enforcement

What happened to oath of office to enforce laws and constitution?

[From article]
Gov.-elect Charlie Baker said a federal case in which an illegal immigrant bribed a RMV clerk up to $1,000 to score dozens of Bay State driver’s licenses is “as good an example as any” of the trickle-down effect of the nation’s “broken” immigration policy.
Speaking in an interview on the new “Boston Herald Drive” morning news show on Boston Herald Radio, said he wants to be part of a state and local effort to engage the feds on how to mold immigration protocol, including moving the state into compliance with the federal law known as REAL ID.
He cited a Herald story today detailing how an illegal immigrant is facing charges of bribing a Registry of Motor Vehicles clerk at the agency’s Revere branch for at least 29 driver’s licenses — with the payments ranging anywhere from $100 to $1,000. At least two other illegal immigrants and three RMV officials have been charged as part of an ongoing investigation in recent years, the Herald reported.

Universities Anachronistic, Need Reform

[From article]
Employment rates for college graduates are dismal. Aggregate student debt is staggering. But university administrative salaries are soaring. The campus climate of tolerance has utterly disappeared. Only the hard sciences and graduate schools have salvaged American universities' international reputations.
For over two centuries, our superb system of American public and private higher education kept pace with radically changing times and so ensured our prosperity and reinforced democratic pluralism.
But a funny thing has happened on the way to the 21st century. Colleges that were once our most enlightened and tolerant institutions became America's dinosaurs.
[. . .]
Universities claim they are committed to creating a student body that looks like America. In fact, they deliberately ignore the most important diversity of all -- thought. About half the country is fairly conservative. Yet by any measure -- faculty profiles, campus speakers, student organizations -- colleges discriminate against those not deemed sufficiently progressive.
[. . .]
Either higher education will give up its medieval privileges, begin to be accountable and live in the modern world, or it will be reduced to a costly relic for a tiny elite.
An aging campus generation that has nearly wrecked the university should bow out and let more open-minded and innovative minds repair the damage that the old generation has wrought.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker Popular Candidate

[From article]
They spat on Republican legislators and urinated on Walker’s office door. They shouted, “This is what democracy looks like!”
When they and Democratic legislators failed to prevent passage of Act 10, they tried to defeat — with a scurrilous smear campaign that backfired — an elected state Supreme Court justice. They hoped that changing the court’s composition would get Walker’s reforms overturned. When this failed, they tried to capture the state Senate by recalling six Republican senators. When this failed, they tried to recall Walker. On the night that failed — he won with a larger margin than he had received when elected 19 months earlier — he resisted the temptation to proclaim, “This is what democracy looks like!”

Ralph Nader At Harvard Law School

[From article]
Right now, 90 percent of grads represent 10 percent of the people. The vast majority of lawyers represent a minority of upper-income people or corporations.
[. . .]
Harvard Law School is the leader. If Harvard does it, it’s more likely others will consider doing it,
[. . .]
Corporation against people. The corporations have obtained so much power over government, elections, education, the tax system, over workers. They have the power to weaken labor unions. They have the money to put up to do that and the people don’t. You have a corporate state where you have diffusion of corruption. You can see it everywhere. That’s the biggest imbalance. These large corps are planning almost everything. They plan our government, our elections, our environment
[. . .]
The more wealth and power that’s concentrated in the hands of the few, the more corrupt a society will be.

OK, so Ralph Nader spent his life trying to make the United States a more equitable nation. But here he raises questions about his loyalty to Harvard Law School. He says he wants to reform the law school and it graduates and students. He makes two questionable assertions. One is that because "Harvard Law School is the leader. If Harvard does it it's more likely others will consider doing it." That assumes that others wait for Harvard Law School to show the the way. Many lawyers from other law schools, and many law schools have public interest clinics for students and for practicing lawyers.  Then he describes the problem of the power of corporations over government, elections, the tax system, over workers." Dies he include Harvard University officially known as the President and Fellows of Harvard College? Harvard has an endowment of $32 billion. They control the city, state and US government agencies in Massachusetts. They have enormous influence in Washington DC as well. Since Harvard has his loyalty why not direct some of his concerns at Harvard a corporation with some of that enormous power and influence?
