FBI Files Compiled About George McGovern Released

On Dec. 22, the FBI forwarded its report to the Kennedy administration. It referenced an incident in which McGovern had "reportedly" fathered what the bureau termed an "illegitimate child." But a separate memo, one that stayed within the FBI, was more definitive about McGovern's paternity.
It was information that, more than a decade later, would eventually find its way into the hands of McGovern's political enemies.

"The bureau didn't hesitate to disseminate," Theoharis said.
