Cambridge City Councilors Admit They Perform for the Cameras
[From article]
"We certainly have a history of filing, passing orders in this chamber that are symbolic to show our commitment to certain things," Councilor Marc McGovern said. "If that's all this turns out to be, then that in itself is a valuable message to send out to other communities and to the state."
Councilor Nadeem Mazen supported the order, saying the city may not be aware of possible steps to legally increase the minimum wage in Cambridge.
"I think it's still important to pass this," Mazen said. "If we pass it, it gives other cities similar momentum. And with the momentum of cities, I think the state Legislature will understand that $11 isn't enough, and I think we need to move the state in that direction."
If passing orders are a means of attracting attention and giving support to other cities why not pass an order that American citizens should get priority for housing and services over illegal aliens who are crossing into the U.S. contrary to law. Currently young gang members are getting housed after coming here illegally. Too many veterans are homeless and they have no means of getting the attention of politicians. How many more studies will the City Council fund wasting taxpayer funds, while citizens remain without homes?
