Surprised it took so long for a column opposing guns to be published in Cambridge. The most popular solution among liberals, after a mass murder is Ban Guns. The second most popular is More Psychiatry. This is called knee-jerk irrational response, almost Pavlovian. Killing babies is heinous. So is negligent homicide by medical professionals who should know better. 90,000 people are killed every year in the USA by negligent doctors who fail to wash their hands or equipment or the facilities between patients to prevent passing along germs to innocent clueless patients. Over 100 years ago Louis Pasteur discovered how bacteria is passed from one person to another, often by doctors. The medical profession ridiculed Pasteur, because he was not a doctor, only a scientist. Yet 100 years later they are still killing people out of laziness, stubbornness, and egoism.
If there were no guns in the world, criminals like Mr. Lanza would find a way to murder innocents. There were mass murders before guns existed. Politicians, mental health professionals, control freaks by nature, are focused on gaining and maintaining power over others. Eliminating guns is one way to ensure that they will not have their power threatened. Freedom demands an armed population to prevent more government abominations. Harvard University administrators and Cambridge liberals demand giving up freedom for security. Freedom requires vigilance, work, not eliminating it. Freedom is dangerous. J. Edgar Hoover was aware of that. He worried about books and ideas a bigger threat than guns. Local politicians and psychiatrists agree with Hoover.
