The couple, who had been together for many years, were kayaking on the Hudson River between Plum Point and Bannerman’s Island at around 7.30pm April 19 when Viafore's vessel overturned, sending him into the frigid water.
Initially, police believed that Graswald tried to help her fiance and fell into the water. She was eventually scooped up by a passing boat and called 911 after reaching land to report Viafore missing.
The 35-year-old was taken to hospital and treated for hypothermia but her fiance has not been found.

Cops initially believed she was “the survivor of a tragic accident” when the couple’s kayaks overturned in rough water off Cornwall-on-Hudson, said Orange County prosecutors and State Police.
But investigators soon doubted her tale.

The Latvian-born Graswald was active on Facebook in the days after the disappearance, posting several photos of the couple together.
“Miracles ARE possible,” she wrote in one post, adding, “Please, no questions at this point. We’re doing everything we can. We will find him.”
Viafore’s high-school friend Jackie Green Keel said she was in “shock” over the murder charges.
“They seemed so in love,” she told The Post. “I have not seen Vinny since [high school], but he is an amazing man. Always smiling and always wanted to enjoy life.”
