Copenhagen police say they believe a man shot dead by officers was responsible for two fatal shooting attacks that shocked the normally peaceful Danish capital.
The killings, coming little more than a month after bloody Islamist attacks in Paris that left 17 people dead, were described by Danish prime minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt as "a cynical act of violence".
In the first incident at a Copenhagen cafe hosting a debate on Islam and free speech, a gunman opened fire, killing a 55-year-old man and injuring several other people.
Among those attending the meeting at the Krudttoenden cultural centre were Lars Vilks, a Swedish cartoonist who has drawn controversial caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed, and France's ambassador to Denmark.
Just hours later, more shots were fired near the city's main synagogue, leaving a young Jewish man dead and two policemen injured.
Police later shot dead a man when he opened fire on officers near a train station.

France's ambassador to Denmark, Francois Zimeray, who was present at the debate but was unhurt, told AFP the shooting was an attempt to replicate the January 7 attack on the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine in Paris.

Michael Gelvan, chairman of the Nordic Jewish Security Council, said a bar mitzvah was underway inside the synagogue and that the "young man" who was shot had been responsible for "access control".

Police confirmed two officers were shot in the arm and leg near the synagogue and a person who was shot in the head died. The gunman fled the scene on foot.

The suspected gunman killed by police after shooting attacks against a free speech event and outside a Copenhagen synagogue was 22 years old and had a background in criminal gangs, police said Sunday.
The suspect was born in Denmark and had a criminal record, including violence and weapons offenses, Copenhagen police said in a statement. They didn't release his name.

The Danish Film Institute said the 55-year-old man killed at the free speech event was documentary filmmaker Finn Noergaard.
Noergaard directed and produced documentaries for Danish television, including the 2004 "Boomerang boy" about an Australian boy's dreams to become a world boomerang champion and the 2008 "Le Le" about Vietnamese immigrants in Denmark.
Denmark's Chief Rabbi, Jair Melchior, identified the Jewish victim as Dan Uzan, 37, a longtime security guard for the 7,000-strong community. He was guarding a building behind the synagogue during a bat mitzvah when he was shot in the head. Two police officers who were there were slightly wounded.

Jens Madsen, head of the Danish intelligence agency PET, said investigators believe the gunman was inspired by Islamic radicalism.

About four hours later, the shooter was confronted by police as he returned to an address that they were keeping under surveillance. Investigators described him as 25 to 30 years old with an athletic build and carrying a black automatic weapon. They released a blurred photograph of the suspect wearing dark clothes and a scarf covering part of his face.

One person was killed Saturday when at least two gunmen opened fire on a Copenhagen blasphemy seminar in an apparent assassination attempt on a Swedish artist who had received death threats for publishing cartoons of the prophet Mohammed.
Lars Vilks, 68, was hustled into the kitchen of the Krudttoenden cafe by bodyguards and was unharmed. Three police officers were wounded, Danish TV2 reported. Police said the dead victim was a 40-year-old man.
Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt called the shooting "a cynical act of violence." She said it had all the signs of a political assassination attempt and "act of terrorism."
The Danish Security and Intelligence Service said in a statement that the shooting appeared to be a planned terrorist attack.
[. . .]
The Swedish artist had faced several attempted attacks and death threats since he depicted the founder of Islam as a dog in 2007.
The Krudttoenden cafe in northern Copenhagen, known for its jazz concerts, was hosting an event titled "Art, blasphemy and the freedom of expression" when the shots were fired.
TV2 reported that about 30 bullet holes hit the window of the cafe and that at least two people were taken away on stretchers, including a uniformed police officer.
