Sidewalks Not Cleared For Mothers With Strollers, or For Mobility Impaired Persons

Broadway, Cambridge MA. Sackler Museum Driveway. Sidewalks cleared by Harvard University employees. Then plow clears driveway and blocks sidewalk.

Further along Broadway at Felton Street, Cambridge. Similar problems. Sidewalk clear up to driveway of parking lot to left of image. But snow bank is left blocking sidewalk, forcing pedestrians out into the street. View is east.

Glad to see one Boston journalist noticed how sidewalks are blocked after snow storms. Local governments and media focus mainly on roadways to see that they are clear for vehicles. Forgotten are the pedestrians. But also even in this article are persons who are mobility impaired. They seldom can leave their homes after snow storms. Especially when the crosswalks are blocked, with assistance from guide dogs, they are still in jeopardy.

[From article]
The sidewalks are not shoveled wide enough to allow for a stroller to get down the street, and even if your neighbors have been kind enough to make a wide path, you are unable to cross the street. The handicap ramps at crosswalks are about as wide as a boot, needing two people to carry the stroller through the valley of snow. Sometimes you can find a helpful hand, but not always. I’ve given up taking my stroller out alone.
