Julie Patz outside of court on Monday.

Julie Patz’s trip to the witness stand marked her first appearance at the murder trial of former bodega clerk Pedro Hernandez, with a prosecutor saying during opening statements last week that she couldn’t bear the pain of hearing evidence about Etan’s disappearance and death.
[. . .]
Hernandez was busted in 2012 after giving a videotaped confession to cops who got a tip he had allegedly told friends and relatives about abducting and killing Etan as far back as the 1980s.
His defense lawyer maintains that the confession was false and coerced from Hernandez, who has a history of mental illness and an IQ that borders on retardation.
The defense also maintains that convicted child molester Jose Ramos — who was found civilly liable for Etan’s death in 2004 — had both means and opportunity to commit the crime.
