Thrice Married Fiance of OR Governor Married Another Man for Immigration Card

[From article]
Hayes married Abraham B. Abraham in July 1997, when he was 18 and she was 29, she said in an emailed statement Thursday afternoon. They were introduced by mutual acquaintances, met only a handful of times and never lived together, she wrote.
"It was a marriage of convenience," Hayes wrote. "He needed help, and I needed financial support."
Hayes, whose engagement to Gov. John Kitzhaber this summer followed their own 10-year relationship, wrote that she was paid about $5,000, enough to buy a laptop and pay for school expenses. In an emotional press conference at 4 p.m. Thursday, Hayes added that she did not declare the income in her taxes.

I was struggling to put myself through college and was offered money in exchange for marrying a young person who had a chance to get a college degree himself if he were able to remain in the United States."
Hayes has said she was on her own at 16, couch-surfing and struggling to finish high school after her parents fell into a tangle of mental illness and alcoholism. Growing up in rural western Washington, Hayes earned academic and athletic scholarships to Evergreen, where she earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree.

Washington court records show that Hayes filed for divorce from Abraham B. Abraham in a King County court on Oct. 26, 2001. Abraham turned 23 that month; Hayes was 34.
Hayes court records show two previous divorces – from Todd Hayes on March 28, 1989 and from Doug McCarthy on Dec. 17, 1996.
She said Thursday that she has not had any contact with Abraham since their divorce was finalized in February 2002. Not long after the divorce, Abraham went on to graduate magna cum laude with a degree in mathematics from Greensboro College in North Carolina. He currently owns a two-story home in a suburb of Washington, D.C.
