Dane Street, Somerville, MA Pedestrian Hazards

The following images were captured along Dane Street in Somerville, MA on Friday June 17, 2016 at about 7:15 PM. The sidewalk hazards are on both sides of the street between Washington Street and Somerville Avenue. These hazards were reported to the Somerville Aldermen in 2014, and to the Somerville Commission on Persons With Disabilities in March 2016.  Some of the sidewalk is under MBTA jurisdiction. They made some asphalt fixes but only for part of the broken sidewalks.

This portion of the Dane Street sidewalk was recently repaired by the Somerville Public Works Department. They did an excellent job making a smooth sidewalk. But the slope is very dangerous in winter when there is snow or ice covering the sidewalk. That section just north of 24 Dane Street needs less of a slope, where it meets the driveway going toward The Market Basket grocery.

“We haven’t seen it this bad since Hurricane Sandy,” said one source.
Rain coming down between 7 and 8 a.m. created the black ice when it met the freezing pavement, according to Accuweather.
The 911 call volume was three times more than normal between 7:30 and 10:30 a.m., a source said.
By 3 p.m., there had been about 3,600 city calls citywide– when normally the call volume would have been 1,800.
The Bronx and Brooklyn had the most 911 calls, and ambulances had to come from New Jersey, Nassau and Suffolk County to help out.
[. . .]
“You would think the town would be more prepared,” he said. “I saw on the news last night that it was going to be icy.”

Hazard in Hall

Hazard in Hall

Here are images of a loose tile outside of my apartment door # 2 at 85 Prescott Street. There is another tile missing on the other side of my door but I usually do not walk over that one. This is the third notice of this loose tile, which is now totally free from its place.
