I just finished reading the book. I think it is so wrong Mariana lost everything. She should have break up with Martha long time before 2003. Martha used her big time!!!!

It's summer and I've just finished reading the book. Excellent. It is refreshing to read a book so balanced. Mariana does not whine nor does she simper with maudlin regret. She has the matter-of-fact practicality that many Europeans, especially those who have lived in the Eastern Bloc have. She remembers the good, while recognizing the not-so-good and values both. She knows she can not have a friendship with Martha any longer, but still loves the Martha she knew. Immensely satisfying book with all the complexities of life.I wish Mariana well.
