Food and Famine

Food and Famine

Exporting food during a famine is not unusual. (JEFFREY GETTLEMAN, "The Food Chain," The New York Times, August 10, 2008) In "Development as Freedom," Nobel Prize winner, Amartya Sen says "coexistence of hunger and food exports is a common phenomenon in many famines." (page 170)
"What is crucial in analyzing hunger is the substantive freedom of the individual and the family to establish ownership over an adequate amount of food, which can be done either by growing the food [. . .] or by buying it [. . .]. The focus has to be on the economic power and substantive freedom of individuals and families to buy enough food, and not just on the quantum of food in the country in question." Displaced Sudanese have no means of earning money to purchase food.
Sen goes on, "Food is not distributed in the economy through charity or some system of automatic sharing. The ability to acquire food has to be earned." (Page 161) "Famines kill millions of people [. . .] but they don't kill the rulers." (page 180) "inequality has an important role in the development of famines." (page 187) "The sense of distance between the ruler and the ruled--between 'us' and 'them'--is a crucial feature of famines." (page 175) Sudan officials are most concerned for themselves rather than the plight of the poor. UN Officials lament exporting food because of higher prices than the UN will pay.
"Democracy can be a very positive influence in the prevention of famines." (page 184) But he adds, "Famines are in fact easy to prevent." (page 180) "A free press and an active political opposition constitute the best early-warning system a country threatened by famines can have." (page 181) Sudan is no Democracy.

Dumber and dumber

Dumber and dumber

Editors ask, "How and why a program designed to foster international peace through understanding needs to recruit from the ranks of possible terrorists is an interesting question indeed." (Editorial, “Let’s define ‘scholar,’”Boston Herald, August 6, 2008) Answer is easy. Through dumbing down there are fewer scholars and standards are lower. See who runs for office as another example. Then there are the young journalists. The list goes on and on.

High Tech Crimes

High Tech Crimes

This is technology gone wild. (David Abel and Jenn Abelson, "11
Charged with massive ID theft," Boston Globe, August 6, 2008) Local
police admit they are clueless how to stop high tech crimes.
Corporations using wireless computer networks are enablers theft. The
US government is unable to stop theft of money, usually a state crime.
This is one kind of new technology being used for criminal
abuses. Academic scientists who wouldn't think of using technology for
crime forget that all technology has been used for good and evil.
Directed energy systems can be used to kill or to disabled
civilians not only by military or law enforcement authorities but also
by criminal organizations. High technology electrical weapons can
destroy a person's ability to sleep or to think rationally. Unlike
theft these crimes are not even reported by mainstream media.
Authorities are untrained to investigate some high tech abuses. The
victims are treated as if they are mentally ill.

Wasting Taxpayer Funds

Wasting Taxpayer Funds

The most pervasive activity of the Cambridge government is the way that the elected officials avoid accountability. (Travis Andersen. "School Committee to hire consulting firm for superintendent search," Cambridge Chronicle, Aug 04, 2008) School Committee Members are elected to represent the voters. Instead these unaccountable officials hire unelected persons to make decisions for them. What are they paid to do? Hire others to do the heavy lifting? There is no more wasteful expenditure than to hire academic specialists as consultants to write flowery reports on colorful heavy bond paper, with accompanying power point presentations for city and state officials. The final comment in this report is from another unelected official Glen Koocher the spokesman for the Conformist Party of Cambridge. Is he speaking for the political lobbyist organization that employs him, or is he just blowing hot wind?

World Class Lawless City

World Class Lawless City

[This letter was published in the Cambridge Chronicle on August 14, 2008.]

Big difference between Boston and Cambridge. (Raymond P. Ausrotas, "It isn’t easy being a green room," Cambridge Chronicle, Aug 04, 2008) The Attorney General former DA for Middlesex is married to a Deputy Superintendent of the Cambridge Police Department. The Court Clerk is/was a Sullivan City Councilor for 40 years. Open Meetings law violations are enforced by the DA and the courts. Besides the City Councilors, their aides often block doors to meetings saying they are private. This happens especially when Harvard seeks special exemptions from city and state laws. The councilors have private discussions with selected citizens who are Harvard affiliates or grads. They did that with the sale of city land on Hingham Street and the grad dorms there. There are so many law violations with the running of the city it deserves the title a World Class lawless city. Each week they run council meetings in violation of their own rules, Robert's Rules of Order, and state laws. Much of what the council does may not be legal. But there is no one to challenge their lawlessness. After 10 years of making them aware it is clear that this city has no regard for law except to use it to silence their critics. Cambridge has few deep pocketed activists. Most of the city supports a lawless government. Trust Fund babies are not supporters of the rule of law.
