“Everybody suspected Connolly of protecting Bulger,” Dewan said, “and we knew the FBI couldn’t be trusted.”
But what he didn’t expect is that his own department would abandon him.

John Connolly would go to jail in part because he sent a federal judge a scurrilous, unsigned letter on Boston police stationery.
In it he accused Frank Dewan of “being so obsessed with getting Bulger and Flemmi that he furnished fabricated information he received from his informants.”
Last week, Kevin Weeks testified the letter was John Connolly’s desperate gambit to persuade U.S. District Judge Mark Wolf to free Stephen Flemmi. It didn’t work. Weeks said he got 25 sheets of Boston police stationery from his sister, a clerk at District 11.
