Gun Violence in Cambridge

Keeping poor people segregated in projects breeds hopelessness and crime. Jane Jacobs (Death and Life of Great American Cities) and Sudhir Venkatesh (Gang Leader for a Day) recognized this. But segregation rules even in diverse (Ahem!) Cambridge MA.

Cambridge city police are well trained to address street crime but have little focus on gangs, on institutional crime and openly discriminate based on class. Residents of the almost totally liberal city expect police to make their unsafe neighborhoods safe. The residents must take the initiative. But in Cambridge that is unlikely to happen.
