The community's lottery millionaires are humble about what they did to make it happen.

A town in Missouri is celebrating having a new state-of-the-art fire facility that was paid for in a most unusual way.
Mark Hill, from Camden Point in northern Platte County, ended up donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to the project after winning $200 million in the Powerball Lottery in November 2012.
Mark donated a portion of his winnings to construct the new firehouse after the emergency services saved his father's life, twice.
'My wife and I were able to pay them back,' a humble Mark said to KMBC.
The building, which took more than a year to build, houses both the ambulance service and the community's fire trucks.
Since the windfall almost four years ago, the selfless family has adopted two more children, bought some new cars, built a bigger house and taken several vacations, but the new firehouse is by far their biggest project and they insist they are not looking for praise.
'If my wife and I could have built this without anybody knowing that her and I were building it, that's exactly what we would have done,' he said.
The building is built to last with the majority constructed entirely from concrete.
The rooms are energy efficient as a result of Mark's meticulous planning with the fire district, architects and contractors.


Payback: The Hills have decided to spend their lottery windfall on project that would benefit their community including a new fire station.

'We took our time to put things together so this would be something that we would be proud of and also that would be a great asset to the community,' Camden Point Fire Chief Walt Stubbs said.
The fire station will be manned 24-7 which is something of a luxury in a town with just 500 people.
Camden Point is wedged into hills in a rural area about 30 miles north of Kansas City. Its downtown has a series of mostly empty brick buildings.
The new fire house will be the home of the town's ambulances and fire trucks, and includes a training room. The building will be dedicated on July 16.
The firehouse is one of many civic projects the Hills have decided to fund for their local community.
They've also paid for a new ball field and donated $50,000 towards the sewage treatment plant enabling residents to do away with personal septic tanks.
The fire station has direct access to highways, and the ball field will be set further away traffic.
The Hills also donated a scholarship fund to nearby North Platte High School in Dearborn, where they both graduated.
City officials estimated these works would have taken around 25 years to complete if the city had to rely on its existing tax base.
Mayor Kevin Boydston said: 'I've said all along that these lottery winnings could not have gone to a better couple. They are giving back to the community, just like they said they would.'
The projects are not surprising considering the down-to-earth family's reaction to their win.
Rather than moving to an exclusive resort or investing in a fleet of Maseratis the family have stayed in their modest family home with husband Mark meeting his friends for coffee in the local convenience store, as normal, every day.
The only big purchase they've made since netting the staggering amount was on a simple pick-up truck.
Before the 2012 win, the Hills were a simple, working-class family with three grown sons and a ten-year-old daughter, Jaiden, who they adopted from China.
'They are very conservative people,' said Walt Stubbs, a friend and former high school classmate of the Hills. 'They are doing some really nice things for the community and they've taken care of their family.'
The couple, who are in their mid-50s, told reporters at a news conference after winning the lottery they would stay in the area and give a lot of the money away. Mark quit his job as a mechanic, while wife Cindy, was out of work at the time.
'I'm real proud of them,' said Shirley Hill, Mark's mother. 'They have stayed grounded. That's their nature.'

Privileged University of Missouri Student Protester Accused of Theft, Drugs, Misogyny

“Butler did it,” gushed Southern Christian Leadership Conference president Vernon Howard, introducing the graduate student as he made the keynote speech at the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration in January. Since November, Butler has made half-a-dozen speeches, including addresses at the law schools of Harvard and Duke.
Perhaps these institutions should have done their research before portraying Butler as a social-justice hero. Heat Street’s review of Butler’s online presence, as well as video reviewed exclusively by the publication, reveals he’s chronically stolen items, denigrated low-income workers, and made troubling comments about women and drugs.
ost of the coverage of the events of last fall focused on claims of pervasive racism at the university, as well as administrators’ struggle to address the demands of student organization #ConcernedStudent1950. But our investigation has uncovered not only past controversial statements by Butler but also other dimensions to the unrest, including pervasive fears about safety on campus, as well as massive backlash from donors, sports fans and alumni.
Last fall, other student activists and social-justice warriors on campus began looking into Butler’s background because he hadn’t been involved in activism at the University of Missouri previously, and they had concerns about his speaking for everyone. Now that things on the campus have settled down, they’ve provided the information they found to Heat Street.
In a blog post from August 2011, titled “My Summer Breakfast Experience,” Butler describes how, for 61 days, he swung by a hotel before work and “decided to indulge myself with ‘free’ breakfast items.”
Butler describes trying to get caught stealing food, making goofy faces in the camera and making sure staff got a good look at his face.

His disdain for low-income Americans is also apparent in another blog post, from July 2011, that was written about his visit to a Subway sandwich shop. Butler describes how he “stormed up to the counter inpatient [sic] and indecisive,” further detailing rude behavior to the worker. He describes watching the worker, “a grumpy older gentleman, about 70-75 years old,” making his sandwich.”
Butler, who grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, is the son of an railroad executive whose compensation in 2014 was $8.4 million, according to regulatory filings.
Some videos published by Butler, also in 2011, are equally controversial.
In one, nearly 15 minutes long that was published to YouTube in March 2011, Butler says he wants to “address the issue—a very important issue—of XX versus XY. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, male and female: which is better.”
Butler and a guest continue to discuss the problem of “ratchet women,” who flirt and generally are not well-behaved, by their reckoning.
“So you’re saying, she jumps from male to male,” Butler says, continuing: “So this would be like in the kingdom, the wild kingdom, where they’re trying to get their prey.”
At one point, Butler asks his guest: “So what he’s saying is that us as men, we don’t have issues, it’s all women, obviously, because what do we do? We just eat, sleep, work, we’re the backbone. Is that what you’re saying? … You’re saying all women are trash, is that what you’re saying?”
Another 9-minute video, posted to YouTube in July 2011, features Butler singing about cooking crack cocaine with his love interest.

Slowly, to be sure, but at last some universities and some police departments in university towns are beginning to fight back against students who protest imaginary microaggressions with real illegal macroaggressions. A few months ago, University of Missouri communications assistant professor Melissa Click communicated her displeasure with student journalists who were videoing her leading a demonstration on campus. They captured on video her enraged face and uplifted arms as she called out, "I need some muscle over here" to remove the non-protesting students.
The Missouri state legislature discussed firing her.
The student videographer filed a complaint with university police.
And now the Columbia, Missouri city prosecutor has charged Click with misdemeanor assault.

In its desperate quest to be multicultural, Mizzou adopted another progressive innovation many years back: lowering standards for these select groups. Just about all universities did. As a result, for instance, black Missourians who could have competed successfully at Mizzou were headed to Harvard and Yale. Those who could have competed at a community college or a lesser state college were headed to Mizzou.



Scholars call the phenomenon "academic mismatch." Rather than struggle in science or math classes, many mismatched students have chosen to coast in politically charged programs like black studies or women's and gender studies and act out the ideology in their ample leisure time.
At MU, diversity trumps scholarship, and there is no more impressive testament to the same than the rise (and fall) of 53-year-old Youssif Omar. Last year, the university approved his Ph.D. dissertation and named him managing editor of Artifacts: A Journal of Undergraduate Writing.
One problem, alas, is that Omar cannot write. His is the only dissertation I know of – "Perceptions of Selected Libyan English as a Foreign Language Teachers Regarding Teaching of English in Libya" – whose very title demands a "sic."

Omar's Mizzou career came to an unfortunate end in late November, when Columbia police arrested him for visiting a local high school and dragging a 14-year-old relative by her hair down the school's front steps. She apparently had offended Youssif by failing to wear her hijab in class. The New York Daily News reported this story and embarrassed the prize-winning J-School daily to run a tiny piece on Omar days later.
The J-School's urge to protect selected minorities – "Hey, I need some muscle over here" – mirrors that of the media at large. In late 2014, the state and national media uncritically accepted the propaganda coming out of Ferguson. When the lies were grudgingly exposed, the protesting students at MU stuck to the more comforting and empowering anti-white, anti-cop narrative. Having Ferguson sort of nearby gave the MU students a proud claim on victimization other campuses couldn't quite match.

To protest white privilege on campus, grad student Jonathan Butler went on a hunger strike. Butler, whose father made $8.4 million last year as a marketing exec, made the laughable claim to CNN, "I felt unsafe since the moment I stepped on this campus." Coming off a four-game losing streak, the football team may have felt unsafe about continuing to play in the SEC and joined the protest.

The theory behind Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals is the fantasy idea that the oppressed multitude ought to be led by educated leaders like Saul Alinsky.

Now let us agree that when the poor rise up against the rich there is a certain justice in their action. After all, who can speak of their privations but the poor?
But it is a very different thing when the poor are led by elite youths, or funded by George Soros, or encouraged by government-paid diversity counselors and faculty. Or are they merely marching in search of celebrity, money, power, and the love of beautiful women using the poor as cannon fodder?

There is no evidence that the University of Missouri denies equal opportunity to its black students; those black students, like every other student on campus, are surrounded by lavish educational resources, available to them for the asking on a color-blind basis. The university’s faculty and administrators are surely among the most prejudice-free, well-meaning group of adults in human history. Thousands of Chinese students would undoubtedly do anything for the chance to be “systemically oppressed” by the University of Missouri’s stupendous laboratories and research funding.
But Missouri’s political class has embraced the patent delusion that the university is rife with racism. Governor Jay Nixon called on college officials to “ensure the University of Missouri is a place where all students can pursue their dreams in an environment of respect, tolerance and inclusion.” In truth, the only barrier to such pursuit is a student’s own lack of academic preparedness, should he have been admitted under a racial preference.

The precedent set here is monumental. Any student protester who can convince his college’s football or basketball team to threaten a strike will be able to bring administrators to their knees even more quickly than usual. Administrative cupidity and alumni fanaticism have turned the collegiate sports-industrial complex into the most powerful force on campus. If that behemoth can be reliably persuaded to support the latest racial agitation—and there will often be a critical mass of black athletes to appeal to—then an already supine leadership class will discard the reality principle once and for all.

Even without the sports boycott tool, however, the takeover of the college campus by racial hysteria appears all but complete. A video of a black female student at Yale screaming and cursing at her college master is a chilling portrait of self-engrossed, bathos-filled entitlement that has never been corrected by truth, much less restrained by manners: “Be quiet!” she shrieks at the frozen administrator, “Why the fuck did you accept the [master] position,” she continues at full, self-righteous cry.

This shocking video is a glimpse of the future—the boorish, hate-filled Cultural Revolution come to America. Colleges have capitulated completely to delusional victimology; unless employers are willing to stand up against the coddled products of the academic hothouse, we may all soon be living in a world of screaming, monomaniacal victims.

Officers were executing a search warrant at a home near Walton and Page, Dotson said at a news conference, when two armed men ran out of the back door of the home.
One pointed a gun at police officers, the chief said.

Four white men carrying military-style rifles and sidearms added a disquieting element to riot-torn Ferguson, Missouri, when they began patrolling the streets before dawn on Tuesday, which police quickly labeled "inflammatory."
The men said they were part of a group called "Oath Keepers," which describes itself as a non-partisan association of current and former U.S. soldiers, police and first responders who aim to protect the U.S. Constitution. They told reporters on the street that they were in Ferguson to protect a media organization.
The men attracted immediate attention in the mostly black neighborhood, which exploded into violence on Sunday night as protesters marked the one-year anniversary of the killing of an unarmed black teen by police.
The Southern Poverty Law Center, a non-profit civil rights organization, has described the "Oath Keepers" as a "fiercely anti-government, militaristic group," and St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar condemned their appearance in Ferguson.

This week, on the one-year anniversary of Michael Brown’s death, a familiar image came out of Ferguson, Mo., as protesters faced off against police in the city just as they did 12 months ago.
For one business owner, a night of rioting and looting disrupted a year of rebuilding not just her business, but a community.
Over the course of last year, Dellena Jones, owner of 911 Hair Salon on West Florissant Avenue, found an ally eager to help her rebuild: the St. Louis Tea Party Coalition.
But on Sunday, a group of young men shattered the left window of her beauty salon as protests flared once again in the St. Louis suburb.

Jones estimated that in the last 12 months, the protests have caused her to lose roughly $75,000—a combination of lost revenue from a decrease in foot traffic along West Florissant Avenue and the cost of repairing her shop.
“You have all of these different protesters. They don’t pop into your business and say, ‘Hey, what do you need?’ or ‘Hey, are you all OK?’” Jones said. “It just seems like with the protests, it seems very selfish.”
After last year’s protests, the St. Louis Tea Party Coalition rallied volunteers to participate in “buycotts” of Ferguson businesses to show people that yes, the stores in the town were open for business, and yes, it’s safe to shop in the city.
And over the last few months, the group has also been helping Jones put her store back together.

“It’s just amazing to me. The biggest chant is ‘Black lives matter.’ So many black lives are being affected by this in such a big way,” Jones said. “I’m an African-American, I’m a single parent. I have two kids. I’m affected by this. It’s almost a little bit contradictory with the chants of ‘Black lives matter,’ but it seems that it’s only some black lives matter.”

Last month, LifeNews covered quotes from a United Methodist Pastor who wrote years ago about how he thinks caring about unborn babies who die in abortions is “idolatry.”

Minister John M Swomley is an ordained United Methodist minister and, from 1960 to 1984 he was professor of Christian Ethics at St. Paul’s school of Theology in Kansas City, Missouri. At the time he was active in ministry, he was president of Americans for Religious Liberty and a longtime board member and sometimes vice president of the American Civil Liberties Union and chair of its Church – State committee. So here is a Christian pastor serving on the board of a prominent pro-abortion group.
Sarah Terzo, who has a knack for documenting the history of the abortion debate and the abortion advocacy movement by posting quotes from pro-abortion activists through the years, posted the controversial quotes on her blog.
Now, Terzo has uncovered more quotes from Swomley arguing that unborn babies are not “innocent” as pro-lifers claim, but are actually guilty – guilty enough, he implies, to justify aborting them. Swomley first tries to refute the baby’s claim to innocence using theology.

Last year, Methodist Health Care Ministries, whose logo claims they are serving humanity to honor God, gave almost half a million to the nation’s top abortion provider Planned Parenthood. In 2013, a pro-abortion article was posted on the General Board of Church and Society website and the United Methodist Church opposed the bill to ban late-term abortions.
This is why pro-life Methodists have left the denomination over the last couple of decades and continue to leave the church in droves, causing historic low membership rolls for the church.

Two men who met during the Ferguson protests and plotted violence against law enforcement admitted in federal court here Tuesday that they planned to blow up a police station, the top St. Louis County prosecutor and the Ferguson police chief.
Olajuwon Ali Davis, 23, and Brandon Orlando Baldwin, 24, each pleaded guilty of four explosives and gun charges that will carry seven-year prison terms when the men are sentenced Aug. 31.

Federal agents and police tracked them and their calls and texts for weeks, recording some of the conversations. The two discussed using Baldwin, who was then an employee of the Cabela’s store in Hazelwood, to buy guns for felons and others. Baldwin admitted that he did buy three guns, falsifying federal forms by saying that the weapons were for him.

Baldwin, speaking to a second informer, said he wanted to build “bombs and blow things up,” his plea says, and “hit them in places where it hurt, hit someone important.”

Baldwin said one target was an unidentified police headquarters, to “destroy their communications.” Also mentioned as targets were St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert P. McCulloch and then-Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson, the plea agreements say.

Investigators previously identified both defendants as members of the St. Louis Chapter of the New Black Panther Party. Baldwin also is known as Brandon Muhammad, according to court documents, and Davis also uses the last name Ali and goes by Brother Ali. Baldwin described himself as a field marshal for the party, his plea says. Davis said that he once carried a gun as part of a security detail for the party.
Davis spoke in October at a New Black Panther rally at the Greater St. Mark Family Church about the killing of Brown. Davis was identified that day as the Missouri chapter’s “minister of law.”

Sutton and her 17-year-old son, Zachary Wade Sutton, were found dead on Thursday at a relative's home in Clinton, about 45 miles from Sedalia, where she had moved after escaping the home she had shared with Horn.
Oberkrom said officers found Horn hiding in a closet in an abandoned building at the J. N. Turkey Kearn Memorial Wildlife Area, about 70 miles southeast of Kansas City. He said officers were led to the area by a tip they received Saturday morning.

A massive hunt is underway for a man suspected of shooting dead his ex-girlfriend and her teenage son just weeks after she told police he had kept her locked in a wooden box for months.
Sandra Kay Sutton, 46, and her son, Zachary Wade Sutton, were found dead in her brother's home in Clinton, Missouri, where they had been staying, around 4am on Thursday, police said.
Authorities said her former boyfriend, 47-year-old James Barton Horn Jr., is 'absolutely' a suspect in the murders and officers surrounded his home in nearby Sedalia early on Thursday.
They have been looking for Horn ever since Sutton escaped his home in April and accused him of keeping her captive inside a wooden box for months.

In late April, Sutton told police that, in January, Horn threatened her in a car with a 'tire jack' after an argument and that when they returned home he began building a wooden structure.
She said that Horn forced her to help build it, according to a probable cause statement filed by Sedalia police in the case.
The probable cause statement also said Sutton was allowed to leave the box in the evenings when Barton returned home from work but remained locked in it throughout the day.
When he returned, he sexually abused her, she said.
She managed to escape and run to a neighbor's home on April 30.

Notice there are no bikers throwing rocks at police.


The differences again show the benefits of organized crime, with which the police charged the bikers, against disorganized crime as in Ferguson, MO and Baltimore, MD. Organized crime does not fight with the police. They are no threat to the peaceful travel of ordinary civilians. Whereas young black men often attack innocent white persons making them a threat to the peace and tranquility of society. Bikers keep to themselves and only attack others in response to an attack on them. They have rules unlike black youth who randomly attack others for no reason. Another reason for the lack of intense media coverage and lack of outrage from local citizens is that Waco is the scene of the Branch Davidian siege when the US Department of Justice left 80 dead, some women and young children, after a tank attack. In this case the police may have killed four of the bikers, yet there was no riot and no attacks on police. No bikers hired by George Soros throwing rocks at police. No demands for arrest of the police shooters. Many of these bikers are elder citizens. They do not have a misguided self image denying their responsibility for their actions.

A year before the deadly Texas shootout that killed nine people on May 17, a lengthy report by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives detailed the involvement of U.S. military personnel and government employees in outlaw motorcycle gangs, or OMGs. A copy of the report was obtained by The Intercept.
The report lays out, in almost obsessive detail, the extent to which OMG members are represented in nearly every part of the military, and in federal and local government, from police and fire departments to state utility agencies. Specific examples from the report include dozens of Defense Department contractors with Secret or Top Secret clearances; multiple FBI contractors; radiological technicians with security clearances; U.S. Department of Homeland Security employees; Army, Navy and Air Force active-duty personnel, including from the special operations force community; and police officers.

The report predicted that six dominant OMGs — Mongols, Hells Angels, Outlaws, Pagans, Bandidos and Vagos — would continue to expand, with escalating violence. The groups are known as “one-percenter” clubs, a moniker they proudly use to denote their outlaw status. The report identifies the most violent as Bandidos and Hell’s Angels support clubs — the same groups involved in a deadly shootout in Waco, Texas on Sunday.

The deadly confrontation involved the Bandidos and a rival club, the Cossacks MC, who are backed by Bandidos’ arch rivals, the Hell’s Angels. The shootout was part of a ongoing turf battle: Without permission from the Bandidos, Cossacks members have begun wearing a patch on their vests that claims Texas as the club’s territory — a figurative thumb in the eye of the Bandidos, long the state’s dominant motorcycle club. Nine people were killed and more than 170 bikers were arrested in the noontime showdown.

A teacher at a Los Angeles charter school has been removed from the classroom and hit with a lawsuit from the parents of a biracial student who claims he barraged his class with racial stereotypes and said that Michael Brown “got what he deserved.”
Other parents and students, however, claim the teacher is the victim of a preposterous witch hunt.
Steven Carnine has taught at Paul Revere Charter Middle School and Magnet School in LA for nearly 25 years.



The lawsuit was filed March 18, barely two months after Maggie B., the student making the accusations, began attending Carnine’s eighth grade history class. According to the lawsuit, Carnine handed out a questionnaire that asked about various racial stereotypes. The questionnaire was then used to drive a discussion on racial issues, during which
Maggie claims Carnine made a host of offensive remarks.
“Black people are judged for not being smart because they are not smart. A lot of them are just athletes,” Carnine is alleged to have said, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. He also supposedly talked about the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., last summer, saying “the guy was a thug and he got what he deserved.”

Other parents and students, however, have rallied to Carnine’s defense, saying he is an excellent teacher and that the lawsuit is preposterous.

In a related story Cambridge, MA students received an award from the Flat Earth Society for protesting the round earth theory. Three autopsies one ordered by Al Sharpton, one by the Justice Department led by Eric "White people are cowards" Holder, all found forensic evidence that the suspect did not have his hands up; that he was attacking the officer; and he tried to get the officer's service weapon. In addition the Grand Jury testimony revealed the same evidence. The Justice Department report by the misguided Attorney General found no evidence of wrongdoing by the officer. Yet a church in Harvard Square gives students an award for promoting lies? What lesson does this teach?

On Dec. 1, 2014, four members of the Congressional Black Caucus repeated the gesture while delivering speeches on the House Floor titled, “Black in America: What Ferguson Says About Where We Are and Where We Need to Go.” Each of the members held up their hands, and the image spread widely online.
Yet the Department of Justice’s March 4, 2015, investigative report on the shooting of Michael Brown found federal investigators could not confirm witness accounts that Brown signaled surrender before being killed execution-style. The department’s descriptions of about 40 witness testimonies show the original claims that Brown had his hands up were not accurate.

Investigators have overwhelmingly rejected witness accounts that Brown had his hands up in a surrender before being shot execution-style. The DOJ has concluded Wilson did not know whether Brown was armed, acted out of self-defense and was justified in killing Brown. The majority of witnesses told federal investigators that the initial claims that Brown’s hands were up were not accurate. “Hands up, don’t shoot” did not happen in Brown’s killing, and it is a characterization that deserves Four Pinocchios. Politicians should step carefully if they try to highlight this expression in the future.

Last week, Muir began the news with a story about the retraining of New York City police officers under Commissioner Bill Bratton. To fulfill the new policy of not inconveniencing criminals, cops are being taught to subdue violent suspects without harming them, requiring the officers to learn a series of Bolshoi ballet moves.
This would work great if American cops were London bobbies arresting public school louts, but we have a somewhat different urban reality in the U.S. There’s no question but that the “retraining” will get cops killed.
Muir led off his broadcast with a recap of the event that led to the retraining: “Ferguson, Missouri: An unarmed black man, Michael Brown, is shot to death. The officer is not indicted.”
And that was it: “The officer is not indicted.” Nothing about how the “hands up, don’t shoot” hysteria was a bald-faced lie invented by Brown’s ex-con co-conspirator Dorian Johnson. No mention of the police officer being fully exonerated in two separate investigations. No recognition of the fact that Officer Darren Wilson was an exemplar of good police work.

When confronted with this information, Muhammad responded that the “confusion” over his title is no big deal.

“Darren Wilson’s actions do not constitute prosecutable violations under the applicable federal criminal civil rights statute, 18 U.S.C. § 242, which prohibits uses of deadly force that are ‘objectively unreasonable,’ as defined by the United States Supreme Court. The evidence, when viewed as a whole, does not support the conclusion that Wilson’s uses of deadly force were “objectively unreasonable” under the Supreme Court’s definition. Accordingly, under the governing federal law and relevant standards set forth in the USAM [United States Attorneys’ Manual], it is not appropriate to present this matter to a federal grand jury for indictment, and it should therefore be closed without prosecution.”

During the initial encounter, Brown had tried to wrest Wilson’s gun from him by reaching into Wilson’s Chevy Tahoe SUV. Wilson’s story was corroborated, to quote the report, “by bruising on Wilson’s jaw and scratches on his neck, the presence of Brown’s DNA on Wilson’s collar, shirt, and pants, and Wilson’s DNA on Brown’s palm.” Later on, the evidence also showed that Brown was running toward Wilson at the time Wilson fired the fatal shots, not knowing whether Brown was armed or not.

Eric Holder owes Wilson an apology for the unnecessary anguish that Wilson has suffered. As the Attorney General for all Americans, he must tell the protestors once and for all that their campaign has been thoroughly misguided from start to finish, and that their continued protests should stop in the interests of civic peace and racial harmony. In light of the past vilification of Wilson, it is not enough for the DOJ to publish the report, and not trumpet its conclusions. It is necessary to put that report front and center in the public debate so that everyone now understands that Wilson behaved properly throughout the entire incident.

It would be one thing to argue that the illegal killing of Michael Brown stemmed from a corrupt and racist culture inside that department. But once it is established that Wilson was fully justified in acting as he did, it is impossible to explain how the culture and norms of the police could have contributed to any illegal act. Indeed, the only plausible inference cuts the opposite way. The ability of Wilson to handle himself well under extreme pressure reflects approvingly on his conduct and on the ethos of the Ferguson Police Department.

“African Americans experience disparate impact in nearly every aspect of Ferguson’s law enforcement system. Despite making up 67% of the population, African Americans accounted for 85% of FPD’s traffic stops, 90% of FPD’s citations, and 93% of FPD’s arrests from 2012 to 2014.”

The two DOJ reports do not cohere. The first shows that Wilson’s use of force against Michael Brown was fully justified. The second uses that incident to launch a scathing attack against Ferguson, leading to the resignation of its key officials for conduct that looks on balance to be no better or worse than that in other cities around the country. The serious consequence of the second high-profile report is to keep alive the image that racial injustice is alive and well in the United States. What the report fails to understand is that it is as dangerous to exaggerate the risk of racial injustice as it is to ignore it. In a sad sense, the overheated DOJ report contributes to the inflamed atmosphere that led to the most recent shootings in Ferguson.
