Charter Schools, Private Schools, Public Schools and Unions

Mr. Hunter ignores private schools in Cambridge. Are they not separate and unequal? In private schools and charter schools teachers unions cannot force teachers to pay union dues. Is that why unions oppose charter schools? Private schools accept taxpayer benefits too. Hunter argues against himself saying "60 percent of Massachusetts charter schools—including the three Cambridge charters—have no parents serving as board trustees.



As a parent, you want the best for your child. But, as a community, we have to decide what is best for all the children." Which is it? Having no parents on the boards is good or bad? Removing unruly students is good for the community bad for the unruly student. One more counter productive argument. Hunter fails to mention education outcome by public school students compared with charter schools. Is that unimportant?

Don't want to deny disruptive students education. Why should they be allowed to prevent educating the rest of the class? Should disruptive students be allowed to threaten and to intimidate teachers without accountability? Why are students with learning disabilities provided extra resources but when hiring diverse populations, e.g., persons with disabilities public schools exclude such persons? Why are politicians and police in Cambridge and elsewhere permitted to ridicule, to humiliate and to harass persons (not just students) with disabilities? In the USA "we" just isolate and exploit such students for business purposes of the human services industrial complex. Free and "equal" education is hallmark? Why do some persons get extra taxpayer resources than others? "Privatizers' have a better record of producing skilled students with abilities, unlike too many high school grads who need remedial education at community colleges. Blame Wall Street, not unions and mendacious politicians. Keep the guilty above scrutiny. Maintain the status quo dumbing down the population. Bring on the idiocracy.

A teacher at a Los Angeles charter school has been removed from the classroom and hit with a lawsuit from the parents of a biracial student who claims he barraged his class with racial stereotypes and said that Michael Brown “got what he deserved.”
Other parents and students, however, claim the teacher is the victim of a preposterous witch hunt.
Steven Carnine has taught at Paul Revere Charter Middle School and Magnet School in LA for nearly 25 years.



The lawsuit was filed March 18, barely two months after Maggie B., the student making the accusations, began attending Carnine’s eighth grade history class. According to the lawsuit, Carnine handed out a questionnaire that asked about various racial stereotypes. The questionnaire was then used to drive a discussion on racial issues, during which
Maggie claims Carnine made a host of offensive remarks.
“Black people are judged for not being smart because they are not smart. A lot of them are just athletes,” Carnine is alleged to have said, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. He also supposedly talked about the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., last summer, saying “the guy was a thug and he got what he deserved.”

Other parents and students, however, have rallied to Carnine’s defense, saying he is an excellent teacher and that the lawsuit is preposterous.

The 15-year-old girl said she was waiting in an empty classroom around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday for a teacher who never showed up for a tutoring session, sources said. A 19-year-old boy, whom she had willingly had oral sex with inside classrooms three to five times previously, walked in, she told cops.
The alleged attacker dragged her by her wrist to a corner and sexually assaulted her, sources said.

Two Massachusetts state senators advocate for teachers unions. They do not advocate for educating students. They fail to mention the role of teachers unions making education policy. The unions have a role in the dumbed down students turned out by public schools across the nation. Unless and until that ends and their stranglehold on education policy is broken, the dumbing down will continue. See e.g., John Taylor Gatto's book, Dumbing Us Down. Or see how determined the unions are to thwart educating students, by their multi-year battle, which they lost, in Wisconsin when a Governor with a spine, Republican Scott Walker, stood up to them. MA politicians are famous for their lack of spines.

In 1993 when the Massachusetts Legislature voted to create charter schools, the intent was that charters would experiment with new practices for educating our children. Originally, it was intended to take the successful practices developed by charter schools and use them in the district public schools. Today, charter schools are promoted not as collaborators with public schools, but as competitors in a marketplace where test scores take the place of profits. In this market, there are rewards for schools that can avoid students who are likely to score low. That was never the intent.

In New York City, the largest school system in the U.S. with 1.1 million pupils, the study notes that many of the charter schools created over the last dozen years are among the least diverse of all, with less than 1 percent white enrollment at 73 percent of charter schools.

"To create a whole new system that's even worse than what you've got really takes some effort," said Gary Orfield, co-director of the Civil Rights Project and an author of the report.

Teachers, Black Politicians Send Children To Private Schools Overwhelmingly, Yet Support Union Opposition to Charter Schools

According to a 2004 Thomas B. Fordham Institute study, more than one in five public school teachers sent their children to private schools. In some cities, the figure is much higher. In Philadelphia, 44 percent of the teachers put their children in private schools; in Cincinnati, it’s 41 percent, and Chicago (39 percent) and Rochester, N.Y. (38 percent), also have high figures. In the San Francisco-Oakland area, 34 percent of public school teachers enroll their children in private schools, and in New York City, it’s 33 percent.
Only 11 percent of all parents enroll their children in private schools. The fact that so many public school teachers enroll their own children in private schools ought to raise questions. After all, what would you think, after having accepted a dinner invitation, if you discovered that the owner, chef, waiters and busboys at the restaurant to which you were being taken don’t eat there? That would suggest they have some inside information from which you might benefit.
