Boston, MA Gentleman Pleads Guilty To Human Trafficking in New Jersey

[From article]
A Massachusetts man has pleaded guilty to human trafficking charges in New Jersey.
Camden County prosecutors say Javann Hall faces a seven-year state prison term when he's sentenced April 1. The 30-year-old Dorchester man pleaded guilty on Monday.
Hall was arrested during an undercover prostitution investigation at a Cherry Hill hotel in January 2015.
Authorities say Hall dropped off a Boston woman who had been advertised online. The woman was arrested after she solicited an undercover detective and was taken into custody without incident.
Further investigation revealed that Hall was using threats of violence to force the woman to engage in prostitution activity several times a day.

Updated: Convicted NY State Senator Sentenced to 7 Years In State Prison

A federal judge on Wednesday sentenced Malcolm Smith to seven years in prison, saying the former state Senate majority leader corrupted the political process by trying to buy his way onto the ballot in a crooked bid to become mayor of New York City.
No amount of good deeds, not Smith’s community advocacy, church leadership or political authority, were enough to offset his attempts to pollute the process, said Judge Kenneth Karas, who chided the once-powerful Smith for violating the public’s trust.
Summing it up in blunt terms, Karas said, “If Mr. Smith had just said no to the scoundrel, which would have been so easy — ‘This is crazy, I’m not going to buy my way, even if I think I’m going to be the best mayor in the history of New York City, I’m not going to do it, I’m going to respect the process’ — then we wouldn’t be here.”
[. . .]
Dozens of New York politicians have faced legal or ethics charges since 2000, including John Sampson, who replaced Smith as the Senate’s Democratic leader and who is currently on trial in Brooklyn federal court for alleged obstruction of justice.
Smith, 58, chose not to address the court and had no visible reaction when he heard the sentence.
But in a letter to the judge, he insisted that his only motivation was to achieve his dream of becoming mayor.
[. . .]
Smith, who represented southeast Queens in the state Senate, was done in when he unknowingly turned to Moses Stern — a crooked Rockland County developer who was, in fact, a cooperating federal witness — as well as another man Smith thought was a developer but who was actually an undercover federal agent. He pushed both for money and help trying to fix the election.
In turn, Smith promised them $500,000 in transportation funds for a project in Spring Valley.
[. . .]
Karas also sentenced Tabone, a former Queens Republican Party vice chair who was convicted of receiving bribes on Smith’s behalf, to 3¹/₂ years in prison. Tabone was also ordered to forfeit the $25,000 he received in bribes.
In order get on the GOP line, Smith needed the support of at least three of the five borough Republican committees, including Tabone’s.
In February, a White Plains federal jury took just 90 minutes to find Smith and Tabone guilty on the bribery charges. Tabone was also convicted of witness tampering.

Disgraced former state Sen. Malcolm Smith is facing up to 45 years behind bars after being convicted Thursday in a failed $200,000 bribery scheme to fix the Republican line in the 2013 mayoral election.
A White Plains federal jury took a little over two hours deliberating before convicting Smith and an accomplice, former Queens Republican Vice Chairman Vincent Tabone, on bribery charges.
To get on the GOP line, Smith — once one of the state’s top Democrats — needed the support of at least three of the five borough Republican committees. Queens was secured through Tabone and The Bronx through former Bronx GOP Chairman Joseph “Jay” Savino. He never got the third vote.
Smith, the feds say, turned to Moses Stern — a crooked Rockland County developer-turned-federal witness — and an undercover federal agent for money and help pulling off the botched scheme. In turn, Smith allegedly promised them $500,000 in transportation funds for a project in Spring Valley, NY.

Missouri Methodist Minister, Theology Professor Explains Abortion Is Moral Because Babies Are Not Innocent

[From article]
Last month, LifeNews covered quotes from a United Methodist Pastor who wrote years ago about how he thinks caring about unborn babies who die in abortions is “idolatry.”
[. . .]
Minister John M Swomley is an ordained United Methodist minister and, from 1960 to 1984 he was professor of Christian Ethics at St. Paul’s school of Theology in Kansas City, Missouri. At the time he was active in ministry, he was president of Americans for Religious Liberty and a longtime board member and sometimes vice president of the American Civil Liberties Union and chair of its Church – State committee. So here is a Christian pastor serving on the board of a prominent pro-abortion group.
Sarah Terzo, who has a knack for documenting the history of the abortion debate and the abortion advocacy movement by posting quotes from pro-abortion activists through the years, posted the controversial quotes on her blog.
Now, Terzo has uncovered more quotes from Swomley arguing that unborn babies are not “innocent” as pro-lifers claim, but are actually guilty – guilty enough, he implies, to justify aborting them. Swomley first tries to refute the baby’s claim to innocence using theology.
[. . .]
Last year, Methodist Health Care Ministries, whose logo claims they are serving humanity to honor God, gave almost half a million to the nation’s top abortion provider Planned Parenthood. In 2013, a pro-abortion article was posted on the General Board of Church and Society website and the United Methodist Church opposed the bill to ban late-term abortions.
This is why pro-life Methodists have left the denomination over the last couple of decades and continue to leave the church in droves, causing historic low membership rolls for the church.

[From article]
The former Boston gang cop charged with lying to the FBI when they questioned him about looking up a license plate number to an undercover police car for a gang member is expected to plead guilty in December.
Mel Steele, 36, is planning to plead guilty to one count of lying to the FBI on Dec. 1, according to a filing in U.S. District Court in Boston.
Steele worked in the Youth Violence Strike Force from 2007 to 2011, police said. He was assigned to Jamaica Plain’s Area E-13 station until, officials said, he resigned Oct. 17.
[. . .]
His annual pay was $72,000.
According to the FBI, Steele was friends with a member of the Academy Homes street gang known for drug dealing and its violent feuds with a gang from Heath Street.
“Steele allegedly used his BPD computer to run a license plate check on a vehicle which was later determined to be a unmarked BPD vehicle who was conducting surveillance on (Academy),” according to court documents.
