Cambridge, MA Firemen Save Woman Trapped After Accident

Cambridge, MA firemen saved an elder woman trapped in her car which crashed on Kirkland Street, Cambridge, at about 5:45 PM on Thursday, May 26, 2016. I did not see the accident but was walking along Kirkland Street as the emergency vehicles were still arriving. Several firemen worked to extract the woman from her car. One fireman actually climbed into the car to free her. She was alert and talking to emergency responders as they strapped her onto a gurney to take her to a hospital. Her car was upside down, and badly damaged, having turned over after the accident. Another vehicle showed damage in the rear from the collision. That driver did not appear to be injured as he spoke with police officers.



Police interviewed witnesses as I left at about 6:15 PM. I do not have images or video. Some bystanders were capturing video on their cell phones. One woman was capturing still images with a camera. Cambridge firemen exhibited their excellent training and preparations. They had the special services vehicle, and four other pieces of equipment on scene. They used iron tools to pry open the doors. They also had available a metal saw, but it was not needed. The woman was freed before they were able to saw off either door. Cambridge police were placed strategically at adjacent streets keeping non essential traffic away. One ambulance was at the scene near the overturned car. EMS workers stood by until, the woman was freed and placed her on the gurney.

Burke takes over for Commissioner Robert C. Haas, who retired effective May 6, after leading the department for nine years.
“I am very pleased that Superintendent Burke will serve as the acting commissioner. Growing up in Cambridge and spending his entire career at the Cambridge Police Department, Chris has a great understanding of policing and opportunities and challenges within the city. He has been a valued member of city staff and an active part of this community for many years. I am proud to have him serve as the acting police commissioner,” said Rossi.
Burke has been with Cambridge police since joining as an officer in 1984 following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. He was promoted to sergeant in 1997, lieutenant in 2001, deputy superintendent in 2006 and superintendent in 2009. During his career, Burke has served in a variety of roles in the department, including overseeing the Professional Standards Unit, Criminal Investigations Unit and Support Services Division. He has a bachelor’s degree in law enforcement from Western New England College and a master’s degree in criminal justice from Anna Maria College. Burke has been active in the community serving on the GLBT Commission, Human Rights Commission, Commission for Persons with Disabilities and several boards, including the Police Review and Advisory Board.
“It is an incredible honor for me to lead and serve this great Department. When I joined the Cambridge Police department in 1984, it did not take long for me to realize there was no better place that I could work for. That sentiment remains instilled in me today. I believe that we can increase our level of community involvement and outreach while continuing the outstanding work we are already doing,” said Burke.

A Cambridge elementary school teacher has been put on paid administrative leave after she was arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer while drunk at The Abbey restaurant and bar last Friday, according to officials.
Susan McGlennon, a second-grade teacher at Graham and Parks Elementary School, was arrested on April 29 around 9:26 p.m. on the charges of disorderly conduct and assault and battery of a police officer.
McGlennon was reportedly “screaming profanities” and acting in a manner that caused people to pause and watch, according to documents obtained from Cambridge District Court. After refusing to leave, McGlennon allegedly hit officer Christopher Ahern, of the Cambridge Police Department, in the chest with her right hand.
Superintendent of Cambridge Public Schools Jeffrey Young sent a letter to parents and teachers on Tuesday, notifying them that a Graham and Parks teacher was the focus of a news story relating to a non-work-related incident over the weekend, and has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation and outcome.
“Arrangements are being made to ensure continuity in instruction for the students in this class,” Young wrote.

McGlennon was released on $40 bail on April 30. Under the conditions of her release, McGlennon has been banned from The Abbey restaurant at 1775 Massachusetts Ave. and must abstain from consuming alcohol.

A Cambridge police officer has been placed on administrative leave after allegedly hitting a female bicyclist while off duty and fleeing the scene around 7:49 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Broadway and Portland Street.
The victim, a 32-year-old Cambridge woman, was discharged from the hospital Monday evening, a day after the crash that left her with non-life-threatening injuries to her back and head, according to Jeremy Warnick, director of communications for the Cambridge Police Department.
Charges, if any, will be determined after an investigation, which includes reconstruction of the crash with the help of the State Police and Middlesex District Attorney's Office, said Warnick. The officer will only be identified if charges are filed against him, like any other case, Warnick said.
There were reportedly multiple witnesses at the scene of the crash. The off-duty cop was caught after one of the witnesses called in his license plate number. He had not turned himself in at the time of the report, so officers went to his home and took away his car as evidence, Warnick said.
The department placed the officer on paid leave, taking away his badge and gun pending a complete investigation, which is expected to be completed this week.

The anonymous bomb threat against Cambridge Schools made last Thursday night has been traced to an organization overseas, but a suspect has not yet been identified, according to police.
This is the fourth threat of violence made against Cambridge schools since November.
Unlike the other three, which were received through the anonymous tip form on the Cambridge Police Department’s website, the most recent one was sent directly through email to an “executive’ at the schools on Jan. 21, according to police.
“The IP address [used by the suspect in this threat] was associated with an organization overseas, so obviously we’ve contacted that organization and are trying to work with them,” said Warnick. “But one of the hurdles is that those IP addresses can be masked. So it could be someone locally using an overseas IP address.”

“It’s a tough time right now for the United States and around the world with threats, and it requires all of us to work together to keep students safe. People are on edge, and understandably so,” said [Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jeffrey]Young.
Police believe the bomb threats against Cambridge schools made on Nov. 16 and Dec. 1, as well as a threat of gun violence made on Dec. 3, were done by a single student. An arrest has not been made, however, and Warnick said Cambridge Police continues to work in collaboration with the FBI on the investigation.

An Aug. 12 drive-by shooting that took the life of a Cambridge man happened in front of Guirand’s mother’s house, she said. To some, a drive-by shooting may not be obviously linked to racism, or to housing, for that matter. But Guirand said she sees black-on-black violence as a product of the system that first segregated black people into economically isolated communities.
“Black-on-black violence exists because of institutional racism and it exists because of a system that keeps black people poor,” Guirand said.

Luke Tang, a student from Harvard’s Lowell House, died early yesterday, Dean of Harvard College Rakesh Khurana told students and staff in an email.

The Cambridge Police Department are cautioning women who live, work or frequent the Harvard Square area to be aware of a recent increase in indecent assault and batteries.
Officers are currently investigating a report that a woman was indecently assaulted while walking near the intersection of Garden Street and Massachusetts Avenue near Harvard Square on Sept. 8 at approximately 8:30 p.m. The victim said a man bumped into her with his shoulder and then grabbed her butt.

Cambridge Police Warn About ATM Skimmers

The Cambridge Police Department reminds ATM users to be aware of skimming devices at area ATMs. These skimming devices are being used as part of an ongoing scheme by thieves to steal account information from customers and defraud banks. In recent weeks, skimming devices have been discovered in the Greater Boston area, including Cambridge.
Special attention is being placed on ATMs by Cambridge Police patrol officers, particularly during the hours of bank closures. The Cambridge Police and its Investigations Unit are working with local banks and educating regional and branch managers about these schemes, which are not isolated to Cambridge.

An ATM skimmer is an illegal activity that involves the installation of a device generally while a branch is closed, usually undetectable by ATM users, that secretly records bank account data when the user inserts an ATM card into the machine or an ATM door card reader. Criminals can then encode the stolen data onto a blank card and use it to steal from the customer’s bank account.
The Cambridge Police advises local citizens to use precaution and suggests following these tips to help you avoid falling victim to skimmers:
- Inspect ATMs, gas pumps or credit card readers before using them. Be suspicious if you see anything loose, crooked, damaged or if you notice scratches or tape residue.
- When entering your PIN, block the keypad with your other hand to prevent possible hidden cameras from recording your number.
- If possible, use an ATM at an inside location.
- Be careful of ATMs in tourist areas, as they tend to be popular targets of skimmers.
- If your ATM card is not returned after a transaction or after hitting cancel, immediately contact the financial institution that issued the card.

Cambridge Police spokesman has a long history of explaining what he does not know. Here he cites the District Attorney's office ruling the human remains as a homicide. Last time I saw Law and Order it was the job of the Medical Examiner to make such judgments. Warnick likes to do this for the ME but this time he cites the DA. Colina previously worked out at the Cambridge Athletic Club but was kicked out following a fight over gym equipment on November 24.
A witness told the Herald how Colina started punching a much smaller man all over his body as the man unsuccessfully tried to fight back. He suffered bloody cuts to his head, the witness said.
'The trainers broke the fight up,' he said. 'Carlos gets up and starts walking away, yelling, "I'm a beast! I'm a beast!’ like he was proud of himself.'
The victim suffered broken ribs in the attack, WHDH reported.
Colina has an outstanding assault and battery case pending against him from the fight.

Colina is believed to have known his alleged victim; he is friends with his younger brother, Christopher Camilien, on Facebook. The two brothers lived together in Somerville.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said Camilien's death is considered a homicide, even though Colina has not been charged with murder. She said analysis of evidence and more information from the medical examiner are needed to determine if additional charges are warranted.
'We are not seeking anyone else in connection with the discovery of these human remains,' she said.
No motive has been released.

The family needs to find some closure and understanding to help them through this nightmare.”
After parts of Camilien’s butchered body were found stuffed in a duffel bag around 8 a.m., detectives reviewing surveillance video captured near the scene were led to a nearby apartment building, where they found more bags containing body parts — including the missing limbs and head, according to court documents.

They’ve known each other for quite a while, and I cannot speculate about what happened because I don’t know all the details,” Camilien said. “(Jonathan) is a good kid, he doesn’t bother anybody. Aime Camilien said Jonathan’s brother Christopher has been “inconsolable.”

A man who worked out at the Cambridge Athletic Club before Colina was kicked out over a Nov. 24 fight said he had noticed disturbing behavior.
The witness who spoke to police about the gym fight, for which Colina is still facing assault charges, said after learning of the new charges, “My stomach felt sick once I realized I had a connection, however faint, to this guy. It just made me sick.”
The 26-year-old Boston man, who spoke to the Herald on the condition of anonymity, said, “Maybe two months before the fight, we saw Carlos ask some people when they’d be done with the equipment they were using. They said they’d be done very soon. But Carlos stood there and glared at them.”
Of the November fight, he said, “Carlos outweighed him probably by more than 100 pounds. Carlos was punching him all over the body, and the other guy was trying to fight back. He started bleeding. There was a lot of blood coming from his head. ... The trainers broke the fight up, and Carlos gets up and starts walking away, yelling, ‘I’m a beast! I’m a beast!’ like he was proud of himself. The gym manager told him to get his things and get out of there.”

Colina's attorney John Cunha maintained his client's innocence in court, entering a not guilty plea on his behalf. “Our hearts go out to the deceased,” Cunha told reporters. “I can't imagine a worse loss.”
A police report filed in court indicates that surveillance footage shows a man dropping off the duffel bag outside the global headquarters of pharmaceutical giant Biogen at 225 Binney St. around 7:54 a.m. Saturday. The bag contained a headless torso with its arms severed below the armpits and its legs dismembered from below the knee, records state.
Investigators used surveillance footage to then track the suspect to his nearby apartment on Sixth Street where police said cameras captured him and the victim leaving and returning at different times the previous night.
After entering the apartment building, police said they found a bag containing what appeared to be a foot in a common trash room on the third floor and detected vacuum cleaner noises and a strong odor of bleach coming from Colina's apartment down the hall.
Later, a medical examiner determined that other white garbage bags found in the same trash room contained the missing limbs and a head, along with credit cards and a license belonging to the victim. An autopsy also revealed trauma to the victim's face, head and body, officials said.
After obtaining a warrant, detectives who searched Colina's apartment said they found a piece of rope, a handsaw with a broken handle and what appeared to be dried red-brown stains on its blade, cleaning supplies, and what seemed like tool marks inside a bath tub. Where pieces of a carpet had been removed, investigators found dried red-brown stains on the floor, the report said.

The duffel bag was found shortly before 8am near a building used by biotechnology company Biogen Inc. and a block from a police station, Middlesex District Attorney Marian T. Ryan said.
Video surveillance of the area led police to an apartment complex across the street where additional human remains were found in a common area, authorities said.

Residents who left the building were allowed to re-enter only after showing proof they lived there; officers would then escort them to their apartments.

One person was arrested after the gruesome discovery of human remains in a duffel bag near a walking path in Cambridge yesterday morning led authorities to a nearby apartment building where more discarded body parts were found, officials said.



“Officers responded to that area, opened that bag and determined the bag contained human remains,” Middlesex District Attorney Marian T. Ryan said of the grisly find near the intersection of Binney and Sixth streets at approximately 8 a.m.
After reviewing surveillance video captured near where the duffel bag was found, detectives went to Kendall Crossing Apartments, located adjacent to the Cambridge Police Department, where “additional human remains were found (in) a common area,” Ryan said.
It is unclear whether the body parts belong to the same victim, Ryan said, though she added investigators “believe it to be one person.”
One unidentified suspect has been arrested in connection with the horrific discovery, Ryan said, and will be arraigned tomorrow in Cambridge District Court on charges of being an accessory after the crime of assault and battery causing serious bodily injury and the improper disposal of human remains.
Cambridge police Commissioner Robert C. Haas stressed that authorities don’t believe there is an active threat to area residents.

Part of a human body was found around 7:45 a.m. Saturday, April 4, at Loughery Way in the area of 225 Binney St. near a walkway between the Cambridge Police Department headquarters and Kendall Square, according to Jeremy Warnick, director of communications for the Cambridge Police
Department.
Warnick said the Middlesex District Attorney's Office is already ruling it a homicide.

Police have arrested a suspect after human remains were found at two different locations in Cambridge on Saturday.
During a press conference at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 4, at the Cambridge Police Department, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said it is unclear at this point whether the remains found at the two locations are from just one victim or more. But she said they believe the remains are from one victim.
A suspect, who Ryan would not identify at this time, will be arraigned Monday, although she did not say whether that person is the prime suspect.

The named areas are all relatively poor neighborhoods. Why are they chosen? Do the police and the human services industrial complex (MA State Rep. Marie Parente's term), Cambridge division, believe that poor persons are dumb? That they do not know how to find the police? Does this have anything to do with illegal aliens who cannot speak English to explain that the police are their friends? Or that psychiatrists bring love to help them with anxieties and false happiness? Is this over extended and extremely proactive seeking out residents in need of police or human (psychiatric?) services? If the police do not have enough to keep them busy perhaps the City Manger should reduce the budget and size of the department. One personal idea is for the idle officers to address the multi-year criminal abuse of an elder citizen (I know, illegal aliens have priority for Cambridge government services), on property owned and operated by the President and Fellows of Harvard College. For the past 45 years crime families and their associates in police and FBI offices conducted and continue to conduct a brutal campaign of harassment, sleep disturbances, surveillance, telephone and computer tampering. Police might try learning how to stop high tech harassment of civilians by criminal police employees, and federal agents, who use secret technology. But alas police enjoy preying on harmless civilians, knowing to avoid dangerous, violent criminals.

A man who started a tense standoff at a Portsmouth, New Hampshire motel committed suicide Friday night, according to police.
Friday night police identified the man as Nicholas Cammarata, 30, of Saugus.
They received information from Cambridge police that an armed suspect may be at America’s Best Inn who was wanted for firing shots at a Cambridge officer early Friday morning.

"We made a call into the subject’s room and made contact with him briefly,” said Portsmouth police chief Stephen DuBois. “That’s when police say he tried to make a run for it out a back window.
“When he tried to make it out he was met by a couple of officers who challenged him.”
Shortly thereafter, police heard a gunshot, DuBois said.
Police didn’t know if it was aimed at them, so they exploded a diversionary device to see if there was movement in the room.
Then, they deployed a robot inside for safety and confirmed it was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Cammarata was wanted by Cambridge police for multiple warrants out of Middlesex Superior Court, including assault to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and carrying a dangerous weapon. Cambridge police developed information that Cammarata was at the America’s Best Inn and notified Portsmouth police, who tracked him down.
The apparent suicide remains under investigation, according to Portsmouth police.

Officers responded to an area near Fifth Street and Gore Street around 12:15 a.m. on Friday morning in response to a possible breaking and entering.
Police say that the suspect immediately began to run away, firing at least one shot at one of the officers who ran after him.
The officer said he took cover and fired back at the suspect.
Police say that no one was injured in the shooting.
The suspect is described as a heavy-set black man wearing a black hat. K-9 officers are on the scene assisting with the on-going investigation.

At about 9:45 PM I learned that the reason there were no police directing traffic during the fire emergency, was that the emergency fire dispatcher forgot to tell the emergency police dispatcher, who sit about three feet from each other.  Firemen from neighboring communities joined in supporting the four-alarm fire. I only know that Brookline was one of them. At about 9:45 PM traffic was diverted from Mass Avenue both north and south. Traffic on Cambridge Street eastbound was stopped due to traffic coming from Harvard Square diverted onto Cambridge Street.

On its 11 o'clock news, WBZ-TV reported the building was at "1616 Mass Avenue between Everett [Street] and Waterhouse [Street]." They got it wrong.

Fire in Large Cambridge Apartment Building

The large apartment building at 1610 Massachusetts Avenue and Chauncey Street in Cambridge is surrounded by firemen and equipment. There is a problem with frozen hydrants. Traffic in the area is snarled as far as Concord Avenue. When I passed the site about fifteen minutes ago (7:40 PM) there were no policemen directing traffic. At least one Cambridge police detective was on site. Firemen tried to help fire trucks get into place. One ladder extended to the roof of the building and one firemen went onto the roof. There was smoke in the air. Many people remained in their apartments. They could be seen looking out of their windows. Students from Harvard Law School across Mass Avenue were standing on the corner gawking. I asked some of the law studnet of they would "give back," or do some public service by directing traffic. No one volunteered. Equipment on scene were from Engine and Ladder 1, 2, 5 and 6.

Reported Crime in Cambridge Is Down, Statistics Say It Is So

No mention of crime that may not be reported, e.g., rapes on campuses which are now under the jurisdiction of the US Department of Education under a secret legal concept. Then there are crimes against persons with disabilities and elder citizens, which are never reported because they are never investigated. After all who would commit a crime against a disabled person or an elder? It must be near time for contract renewals. Crime is usually down at that time. When it is budget approval time crime stats are usually up requiring larger taxpayer appropriations. Not saying this applies to Cambridge which is not like all the rest of the cities and towns in America.

Cambridge police define serious crimes as a combination of violent crimes, such as homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, and property crimes, including burglary, larceny and auto theft.

Cambridge Police Spokesman Jeremy Warnick wears many hats. About this incident he reveals, "The assailant will likely receive a minimum charge of Assault and Battery and Unarmed Robbery if caught," Previously Mr. Warnick made psychiatric diagnoses (psychiatrist), determination of cause of death (medical examiner), and now he is deciding what crimes to charge the suspect. Isn't that the job of police officers?

Is the Cambridge police spokesman confused or clueless? HUPD has jurisdiction to enforce state laws on Harvard University property. Is the street outside of 1300 Massachusetts Avenue Harvard property? Is it possible that the Cambridge police spokesman (AKA spin doctor), like many Harvard University affiliates, is unaware of the limited jurisdiction of the HUPD? Last time I heard from Mr. Warnick, he was making psychiatric diagnoses, and cause of death determinations without the state medical examiner. Amazing the wealth of misinformation Mr. Warnick shares.

Phone scams are a multi-million-dollar business for scammers, who mostly reside outside of the United States. With new scams popping up every day, trying to keep up with the current ones and the technology is difficult. Caller IDs may or may not show a real number, as scammers are taking to technology and using Caller ID spoofing to make their phone number appear as a legitimate number, like 911 or a police department.
