Chicago Assault Victim Ignored By Pedestrians, Hit By Taxi; Similar Earlier Event in Hartford, CT

Marques Gaines was killed Feb. 7, 2016, outside a 7-Eleven store in the 400 block of North State Street.

Surveillance video released Wednesday captures the last moments of a popular hotel cocktail server who was punched and knocked unconscious, landing in a Near North crosswalk. The footage also shows more than a dozen bystanders failing to come to his aid in the nearly two minutes before a cab accidentally drives over him.
[. . .]
"There's a clear photograph of the aggressor and a clear video of him attacking Marques Gaines. He hasn't been arrested, and we don't know why," Hurley added.
Gaines' cousin Drexina Nelson said she and her mother, Phyllis, watched the video of Gaines for the first time Wednesday evening and were shaken.
"It was gut-wrenching," Nelson said. "We had heard over the course of these past few three months what happened, but to actually see it with our own eyes was devastating."
Gaines' aunt Phyllis Nelson, who had been too upset during the news conference to speak, said afterward that she couldn't imagine strangers passing by an injured person in her native Georgia.
[. . .]
"I've never heard of anything like this where people just walk by a person lying in the street and nobody help," she said. "I just don't understand it."
Attorneys for the family released grainy footage from a Chicago police pod camera that captures Gaines falling to the ground after a heavier man wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and sweatpants and white sneakers apparently knocked him out with a single right-handed punch. Gaines, who had just bought chips inside the 7-Eleven, could be seen running away from his pursuer before he was struck.
Especially troubling for Gaines' family was that bystanders didn't help as he lay in the crosswalk. At least one person believed to be a 7-Eleven employee called 911. Others walked past him without trying to pull him out of the street or block traffic.
Within seconds of the punch, a half-dozen people gathered around Gaines, including two men who appeared to have rifled his pockets. Gaines' family said his cellphone and debit card were stolen. After a minute, the group and his attacker left the scene and as seconds ticked away, individuals and groups of people walked by Gaines without trying to pull him out of the street.
[. . .]
That no one came to her cousin's aid or tried moving him to safety on the sidewalk was too much for Drexina Nelson. Nelson and her mother, who raised Gaines after his parents died, live in Georgia.
"We as people, as humans, we should care for one another," Drexina Nelson said as she sat with her mother and their attorneys at their Loop law offices Wednesday afternoon. "Who leaves a person in the street for that long? That's devastating to me — the fact that he could have been saved. He could still be here with us."
Last month, attorneys representing the Nelsons filed a wrongful death lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court against several entities, including Chicago Taxi and the driver who struck Gaines. But this week, a judge allowed the attorneys to amend the complaint to add 7-Eleven to the lawsuit as a defendant.
The Nelsons' attorneys also released footage outside the store that captures the confrontation between Gaines and the attacker, who is seen getting into the victim's face and pointing.
"Marques never would have been laying in the street if he hadn't been attacked by somebody who had just been in the 7-Eleven," Hurley said Wednesday. He put blame on a security guard and a store employee who he said stood by and watched but did nothing to get Gaines to safety.

The video of a 78-year-old man being tossed in the air after being hit by a car and then left in the street like a discarded food wrapper would have been hideous whoever the victim.
But this was the victim: Angel Arce Torres, known to all as Ponce, the town in Puerto Rico he left in 1966 to come to the United States. Father of six daughters and one son, with a flock of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dominoes player extraordinaire. Fisherman and Yankees fan. The guy who bought his own garbage can and chained it up to keep the street clean in front of his beloved El Bohio Café, where he swept the sidewalk, the way others tend their rosebushes, with the broom he kept in the alley. A retired forklift operator who picked up cans to earn a few extra dollars for Carmen Rodriguez, who lives next to the cafe. The least anonymous man on Park Street, who, thanks to one sickening video, became an unlikely symbol of the scary anonymity of the modern street.
[. . .]
“I don’t want to get too political,” Mr. Myers said, “but I’d just say a lot of things go on in society on a daily basis that are definitely inhumane, and no one raises an eyebrow. But this, something that happened so fast, you were stunned by it, this is inhumane? We’re not human? We’re subhuman? What does that mean?”

Hit And Run Driver Charged After Striking Woman in Wheelchair, in Cambridge, MA

If half as much energy spent on avoiding hurting the feelings of privileged Harvard Law School students, and promoting same sex marriage, was spent making streets and sidewalks accessible to persons with mobility impairments, this woman would have been able to use sidewalks instead of the streets. Charming uneven brick sidewalks and their missing bricks force many people, including parents with strollers into the streets. Where is the MA Attorney General and US Department of Justice on this event? Silent as usual?

[From article]
A Cambridge police officer has been placed on administrative leave after allegedly hitting a female bicyclist while off duty and fleeing the scene around 7:49 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Broadway and Portland Street.
The victim, a 32-year-old Cambridge woman, was discharged from the hospital Monday evening, a day after the crash that left her with non-life-threatening injuries to her back and head, according to Jeremy Warnick, director of communications for the Cambridge Police Department.
Charges, if any, will be determined after an investigation, which includes reconstruction of the crash with the help of the State Police and Middlesex District Attorney's Office, said Warnick. The officer will only be identified if charges are filed against him, like any other case, Warnick said.
There were reportedly multiple witnesses at the scene of the crash. The off-duty cop was caught after one of the witnesses called in his license plate number. He had not turned himself in at the time of the report, so officers went to his home and took away his car as evidence, Warnick said.
The department placed the officer on paid leave, taking away his badge and gun pending a complete investigation, which is expected to be completed this week.

Retired NYPD Officer Killed On Thanksgiving By Hit-and-run Driver

Yvette Molina

[From article]
A 56-year-old Brooklyn woman who was killed on Thanksgiving by an out-of-control hit-and-run driver was a churchgoing, retired NYPD cop who spent her time taking care of stray cats, friends and family said on Friday.
Yvette Molina, a breast-cancer survivor, was getting into her Toyota Sienna van in East New York at about 7:15 p.m. Thursday when Michael McBean slammed his white Mercedes-Benz sedan into her, authorities said. The crash left 11 other people injured.
“She was so loving. She was so caring,” said Molina’s tearful niece Janna Bolt, 28. “She was very into her church, her spirituality. She loved everybody. She was a cat lover. She just did all she could.”
Molina, who retired from the NYPD about 10 years ago after a nearly 20-year career, stopped into a nearby deli to buy a newspaper just before she was struck at Linden Boulevard and Pennsylvania Avenue, Bolt said.
“I was devastated,” she said. “It’s Thanksgiving. Who wants to find out their family member passed away on Thanksgiving?”
Retired Detective Verna McLean, 54, who worked with Molina in Brooklyn’s 77th Precinct, said she was always giving stray cats a home.
[. . .]
McBean hit a Nissan Murano that was stopped at a stoplight before plowing into Molina.
While trying to flee, McBean caused a pileup when he hit a Dodge Caravan that, in turn, slammed into a Dodge Charger, which then hit an Audi Q7, cops said. All of the cars had been stopped at a red light.
McBean then tried to flee on foot and was chased by city EMS medics, police said.
Struggling to escape them, McBean allegedly ran back to the scene of the crash and ultimately into the arms of police.
McBean was charged Friday with attempted robbery, obstruction of governmental administration, disorderly conduct and leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death.
He has five prior arrests on his record, including two for driving with a suspended license, police sources said. He had two sealed arrests.

Illegal Alien Charged With Hit-and-Run Twice In One Week, Had Priors

[From article]
"I see here that you have two prior convictions for impaired driving and that you have been removed from the United States by a previous immigration proceeding," Wake County District Court Judge Ned Mangum told Arellano during the suspect's first court appearance on the charges Friday afternoon.
During that appearance, Mangum nearly tripled the bond on the 31 year old.
Witnesses at the crash scene identified Arellano.
That includes the woman who told a 911 dispatcher: "The gentleman walked away. He got out of the F-150 [pickup truck] and walked toward Jonesville Road."

[From article]
A 54-year-old dentist who was run over by a car and then stabbed to death over the weekend was identified Monday as Xuan Liu.
On Saturday about 1:20 p.m. Liu was walking with a woman in a small parking lot at 4980 Barranca Parkway, between Lake Road and East Yale Loop. He was seen by Hongli Sun, 38, who was driving a Mercedes SUV which police say he then drove into Liu.
When he attempted to stand after being struck, Sun used a knife to stab him and the woman who attempted to intervene, officials said.
Liu died in the parking lot at 1:32 p.m., according to coroner’s office officials.
Sun told police he suspected Liu was having an affair with his wife.
Court records show that Sun filed for divorce with Huaying Chen on Sept. 22, citing irreconcilable differences. He asked the court for custody of their 7-year-old son.

Paging Mitt Romney, Chris Christie, Jeb Bush, Hillary Clinton and The White House. Hello? Anybody home?

[From article]
A six-time-deported illegal immigrant is charged in the felony hit-and-run of an Arizona mother and her two young children. The man allegedly admitted to being high on marijuana while causing the severe lacerations to a five-year-old boy. The five-year-old and a two-year-old were both taken to an area hospital.
This tragedy comes within one week of two separate incidents involving previously deported illegal immigrants allegedly murdering women in two U.S. states: California and Texas. The California case involved a young woman in San Fransisco taking photos with her father on a pier when an illegal immigrant who had been deported five time prior allegedly murdered her. The Texas case involved an illegal immigrant who had been deported four time prior. Police say the man admitted to murdering his wife with a hammer.

Bicyclist Hits NYC Woman, 67, Leaves Scene

[From article]
Police are looking for a bicyclist who hit a 67-year-old woman on a Manhattan street, then pedaled away, leaving the woman to bleed and seize on the ground, her daughter says.
The cyclist hit Mary Grace Belfi just after she parked her car on First Avenue and 86th Street Tuesday afternoon. She and her daughter were heading to lunch, and Belfi was crossing a bike lane on First Avenue to bring a muni-meter ticket back to the car when she was hit, her daughter said.
[. . .]
Lilly Belfi said the bike was red with white front shocks; the cyclist was wearing denim shorts with knee braces, a blue T-shirt, a brown cap and a blue-and-white helmet.

A Brooklyn hit-and-run driver who plowed into a livery cab, killing a Hasidic Jewish man and his pregnant wife, was going much slower than the 70 miles per hour prosecutors claim, an expert said Tuesday.
A crash investigator who testified at the trial of Julio Acevedo said that the ex-con was likely going half that speed when he slammed into the cab carrying Nachman Glauber and his pregnant wife Raizel.

A Bradenton police officer Thursday shot a man who tried to run her down with his car. The man was able to flee but was later captured after causing seven traffic crashes on Cortez Road in Bradenton, according to Police Chief Michael Radzilowski.
About 3 p.m., officials at Blake Medical Center reported that the man was harassing people at the hospital.
Police responded to the hospital and during the investigation the suspect returned.
He then fled the hospital on foot and jumped into a car. As he tried to drive away, he hit a female Bradenton police officer, Radzilowski said.
"As he did, the officer was able to fire a couple shots," Radzilowski said.
The officer fired at the man, wounding him, Radzilowski said, but he was able to escape south on 59th Street West, where a helicopter from the Manatee County Sheriff's Office joined in the pursuit.

Updated: Episcopal Bishop of Maryland Exposed As Hit-and-run Driver In Fatal Crash

Posted December 31, 2014 3:38 PM ET; Last updated January 10, 2015 4:36 PM ET

Shame: Bishop Heather Cook, 58, has been suspended by the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland, where she is the second highest-ranked member of the clergy, while the hit-and-run is investigated.

[From article]
On Dec. 27, Cook struck and killed Tom Palermo, 41, while he was riding his bicycle. According to prosecutors, Cook left the scene for 30 minutes before returning, and registered a blood-alcohol content of .22 percent after the wreck. Palermo died of a head injury at a nearby hospital later that day.
Less than four months earlier, Cook was ordained as the diocese of Maryland's first female bishop. She attended an Episcopal girls school and had served as a boarding school chaplain, an assistant at a parish in New York and a member of two diocesan staffs. Her father, also a priest, raised his family in the historic Old St. Paul's Episcopal Church rectory in downtown Baltimore. According to Cook's autobiographical statement, when Cook herself was ordained as a deacon, her father removed "the stole from around his own neck and placed it over mine."
But Cook's father, like her, had a history of alcohol abuse. In 1977, the Rev. Halsey Cook told the Old St. Paul's congregation in a sermon that he was an alcoholic suffering a relapse and seeking treatment, calling alcoholism "a rampant epidemic in our society" and a "fatal disease, not only of the body but of the mind and spirit," according to an article that year in The Baltimore Sun.
Heather Cook, too, has had repeated problems with alcohol. In 2010, Cook was charged with drunken driving on Maryland's Eastern Shore after registering a blood alcohol content of .27 percent. Police found wine, liquor and marijuana in her car. The drug charges were dropped after Cook pleaded guilty to the drunken driving offense, and she received probation.
[. . .]
In addition to felony vehicular manslaughter, Cook was charged with criminal negligent manslaughter, failure to remain at the scene of an accident resulting in serious injury and death, using a text messaging device that resulted in an accident and three drunken driving charges. If convicted of all charges, Cook could face more than 20 years in prison.

Maryland bishop facing manslaughter charge in custody

The woman bishop who killed a cyclist in a hit-and-run was chased down by a 65-year-old man on his bicycle after she fled the scene of the accident, DailyMail.com has learned.
Heather Elizabeth Cook, 58, has been suspended by the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland, where she is the second highest-ranked member of the clergy, while the hit-and-run is investigated.
The bishop left bike-maker Tom Palermo to die by the side of the road after she struck him on Saturday. She later returned to the scene in what Bishop Eugene Taylor Sutton - the diocese's most senior leader- described as 'taking responsibility for her actions'.
But cyclist Moncure Lyon, who was among the first on the scene of the accident told DailyMail.com that it was only after he followed her to her home in a gated community that she gave a statement to the Baltimore police.
The development came as it was revealed that when Bishop Heather Elizabeth Cook was arrested for DWI four years ago she was so drunk she had thrown up on herself and was driving on the road shoulder with a shredded tire.
Lyon said he saw a green Subaru station wagon driving slowly by the scene as Palermo was being taken to the hospital. 'I could see its front windscreen was caved in and spidered.'
Lyon, who two years ago received a broken collarbone, two separated shoulders and torn rotator cuffs in a hit-and-run just yards from Saturday's accident, hopped on his bike and followed the damaged car as Cook left the scene on Baltimore's Roland Avenue.
'I was determined not to let her get away because the man who hit me was never found,' Lyon said.
[. . .]
District Court records show that she was stopped because she was driving slowly on the shoulder on a shredded tire. The police officer who stopped her said there was a smell of alcohol and burning rubber in the car and Cook had vomit on her shirt.
A 'metal smoking device,' two marijuana baggies, a bottle of wine and a fifth of Irish whiskey were in plain view on the passenger seat, records show. Cook was charged with marijuana and drug paraphernalia possession but those charges were dropped.
