“Cambridge is a super liberal city. We have relatively no issues with the police,” Guirand said. “It’s the black livelihoods that are threatened in Cambridge.”
An Aug. 12 drive-by shooting that took the life of a Cambridge man happened in front of Guirand’s mother’s house, she said. To some, a drive-by shooting may not be obviously linked to racism, or to housing, for that matter. But Guirand said she sees black-on-black violence as a product of the system that first segregated black people into economically isolated communities.
“Black-on-black violence exists because of institutional racism and it exists because of a system that keeps black people poor,” Guirand said.
That’s not always the easiest concept to grasp, said housing workshop co-facilitator and White People Challenging Racism member, Xochi Kountz.
