A man who kidnapped a woman and raped her in an adult gift shop parking lot was arrested after his victim outwitted him.
Police allege Robert Giles had plotted his attack before the fact and, after abducting his victim, demanded she call her boyfriend so he could listen to the entire ordeal.
But instead, his victim called police and a quick-thinking 911 dispatcher, Deonte Smith, figured out what was going on and played along, pretending to be the woman’s boyfriend.
Police picked up the 27-year-old Giles at around 4 a.m. Monday during the rape in the Starship Novelties and Gifts car park in Atlanta, Georgia. Police say the dispatcher “might have saved her life.”

The 911 call was “too graphic” to be released to the public, according to police.
“It’s horrific,” Clayton County police Major Joe Woodall told WSB-TV.
“She explained to him [the 911 operator] what the perpetrator had told her, that he was wanting him to listen while she was being raped.”
“They were able to stop it right then and there and snatched him right from the car.”
WSB-TV’s Tom Jones said Smith thought “it was divine intervention that had him in that 911 call center when the call came in.”
Smith explained that if the victim had called just two minutes later, he would have been on a break. He was the only male in the call centrer at the time.

New Orleans businessman Trey Monaghan, writing in an opinion piece last month, shared with agonizing detail how he chased a suspected burglar outside his newly opened restaurant on St. Claude Avenue, only to have to wait more than an hour for a police officer to show up.
"I started to realize that the police were not coming when the dispatcher told me she had to go," Monaghan wrote. "After a half hour, I decided I had to get back to fixing the problem the robber had created."
A call to New Orleans police, many residents have learned, likely comes with a wait – a long wait in most cases.
Residents who called NOPD through September of this year had to wait an average 73 minutes for police to dispatch an officer their way. That's nearly four times as long as it took in 2011, when the average dispatch time was 15 minutes, according to an analysis of NOPD calls for service by NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune and WVUE Fox 8 News.

"If people don't feel the police department is going to be there, they'll stop calling," said Nahanni Pollard, a criminologist and faculty member at Douglas College in British Columbia. "It has the potential to allow crime to start. If you think police are not going to come, or they won't be there in three or four hours, that police deterrent will be eroded."

He said longer response times have been an "unintended consequence," of the department's federal consent decree. The mandates aim to improve policing and halt what the Justice Department said were systematic violations by NOPD. The mandate requires NOPD officers to spend more time on an individual call, he and other police officers said, leading, in part, to longer waits for citizens.
Dispatchers cannot send new items to an officer who has not cleared his or her previous call. In time-consuming incidents, such as domestic disturbances, traffic accidents, burglar alarm checks or mentally ill subjects acting out violently, proper NOPD procedure now requires that officers have backup, record video from their body-worn cameras and complete detailed investigation checklists before leaving some scenes.

At about 9:45 PM I learned that the reason there were no police directing traffic during the fire emergency, was that the emergency fire dispatcher forgot to tell the emergency police dispatcher, who sit about three feet from each other.  Firemen from neighboring communities joined in supporting the four-alarm fire. I only know that Brookline was one of them. At about 9:45 PM traffic was diverted from Mass Avenue both north and south. Traffic on Cambridge Street eastbound was stopped due to traffic coming from Harvard Square diverted onto Cambridge Street.

On its 11 o'clock news, WBZ-TV reported the building was at "1616 Mass Avenue between Everett [Street] and Waterhouse [Street]." They got it wrong.

Fire in Large Cambridge Apartment Building

The large apartment building at 1610 Massachusetts Avenue and Chauncey Street in Cambridge is surrounded by firemen and equipment. There is a problem with frozen hydrants. Traffic in the area is snarled as far as Concord Avenue. When I passed the site about fifteen minutes ago (7:40 PM) there were no policemen directing traffic. At least one Cambridge police detective was on site. Firemen tried to help fire trucks get into place. One ladder extended to the roof of the building and one firemen went onto the roof. There was smoke in the air. Many people remained in their apartments. They could be seen looking out of their windows. Students from Harvard Law School across Mass Avenue were standing on the corner gawking. I asked some of the law studnet of they would "give back," or do some public service by directing traffic. No one volunteered. Equipment on scene were from Engine and Ladder 1, 2, 5 and 6.

Bronx-born Steven Bonano, 53, who was awarded 69 medals over a 30-year NYPD career, died at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center after a years-long battle with the disease.
He was to have gotten married Jan. 25, said his family, who asked that his fiancée’s name be unpublished.
“I’m very proud of what my son has accomplished in his life — always driving to do better,” said his father, Tony, 81. He’s also survived by his mother, Vivian, 77.
Bonano spent much of his career in the elite Emergency Service Unit, which he commanded on 9/11.
“He loved the police department, it was his life,” a colleague said. “He was a cop’s cop. He was my mentor. He was always looking for us to do better. He always did better for himself. He accomplished so much.”

A war of words erupted in the city’s 911 call center Saturday over allegations two operators made “anti-police” remarks after the assassinations of two cops, the Daily News has learned.
The fracas occurred when news broke that Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu had been shot execution-style by a deranged gunman, sources said.
The remarks were allegedly made by a couple of the 911 operators who handle NYPD calls — and two Fire Department dispatchers in earshot got heated in response, sources said.
The alleged comment that created the most friction was when one said the cops had “deserved it,” said a law enforcement source.
That started a shouting match with two FDNY dispatchers.

Police Priorities Capture 8 Guns in Traffic Stop

One reason for the police being short staffed is due to the resources spent every day harassing me. Are the listed responses from police officers or from non-police emergency dispatchers?

The thing that concerns me is these types of criminals are always on Medford Street and into Gore Street in Cambridge. There are a lot of gangs that cut through this area and hangout at the McDonalds and Gold Star Mother's Park. A female on my street was flashed by a homeless person last week. That homeless person is doing drugs with some of the teenagers living in East Cambridge. The teenagers are getting the drugs from the dealers and gang people that come through on a regular basis. Some of the drugs are done openly on Gore Street stoops. I reported this to the Cambridge police several times over the past month. Here are the responses I received.

#1- If they don't catch them in the act they can't do anything.
#2 - It is not illegal to poses needles in the State of Massacusetts.
#3 - It is not illegal for people to hang out on the streeet corners.
#4 - I've never heard of Gold Star Mother's Park
#5 - We are aware there are some homeless living in the park at night but this is a low priority call. Please continue to call and they will check it out, but understand it won't be a priority call, they are short staffed.

This leaves me with little confidence in seeing things change.
