Love Is Not All You Need For A Civil Society

[From article]
As an attorney who has dabbled in family law, and a former prosecutor, it often strikes me that this ditty doesn’t apply to a substantial chunk of people in the U.S. In fact, America as a nation doesn’t seem all that enamored with the idea of love anymore -- at least not the highest form of love, that which sustains marriage and families.
For those who might think otherwise, I’d suggest they look at the latest numbers regarding marriage and family. Both institutions remain in serious decline: The percentage of married households in the U.S. has now dipped to an all-time low. (2010 was the first year in our history that fewer than half of all households were married households.) And the rate of newly formed marriages has hovered near its all-time low for several years. America doesn’t seem to care much for children anymore, either. Our birth rate has also hovered near an all-time low for several years. Four out of every ten of those record-low births are out-of-wedlock -- and one in three children grows up in a household without a father.
[. . .]
And here’s the problem. We can’t have it both ways. Granted, many factors have contributed to the decline of marriage and family in the U.S, but one underlying factor is frequently overlooked: America’s obsession with pleasurable indulgence. Marriage and family will inevitably decline in a society of too many self-absorbed pleasure junkies, which is basically what we’ve become.
The selfless, sacrificial love that’s necessary to sustain marriage and families involves doing the difficult -- whether one feels like it or not: foregoing one’s self-interest for others; compromising with others; and putting children's interests ahead of one’s own. But pleasure junkies have conditioned themselves to do the opposite. They’re accustomed to doing the easy things (e.g. overeating, overspending, smoking, viewing pornography), and focusing on themselves, rather than doing difficult things for others or for a greater common good.
[. . .]
Unfortunately, our overindulgence in pleasure doesn’t stop at eating, drinking, and spending. Millions are battling substance abuse and/or alcoholism. Millions more struggle with smoking, gambling, hard and soft-core pornography, video games, prescription drugs, and other addictive products and behaviors.
Many people fail to connect the dots between our addiction to pleasure on the one hand, and the decline of American marriage and family on the other. But the connection is real. Commonsense tells us so. Before the No Pain, No Gain mantra seized the world of personal fitness, my folks used to counsel me with a similar adage: Little Effort, Little Results. The phrase was commonplace during my teen and young adulthood years, and it wasn't restricted to my school or work life. It applied to my personal life as well.
[. . .]
When it came to marriage and family, my parents thankfully didn’t preach much; instead they taught by example. I watched them do the difficult things necessary to make their marriage work.
[. . .]
Good parents know that raising children requires tremendous self-giving and sacrifice. There’s less sleep, flexibility, time, money, and energy to do just about everything a couple wants to do for themselves.
Indulgence in pleasure takes very little willpower. A lack of willpower to do what’s difficult, and focus on self, are hardly the habits one can afford to bring into long-term relationships, particularly marriage and family relations. Like eating a good diet, exercise, or saving money -- marriage and family involve persistent effort and sacrifice. Nowadays, large numbers of Americans seem ill-prepared to undergo this sacrifice and effort.
[. . .]
Many if not most of America’s ongoing ills can be tied to the decline of marriage and family: poverty, dependency, welfare, crime -- insolvency of Social Security and Medicare due to low birth rates. If Americans continue their attachment to doing the easy things for themselves, and don’t reclaim the mantle of effort and sacrifice for others in relationships, then marriage and family will continue to weaken, and that once great civilization, America, will continue to weaken along with them.

Trump Appeal Is Emotional. People Love Him

[From article]
Pundit Charles Krauthammer is bewildered, saying that “for some reason” Trump “is immune to the laws of contradiction.” (In reality, Democrats get away with contradiction continually; the only difference is that the media actually report on Trump’s.)
[. . .]

“[W]hen you have a hero, leading the troops in the heat of battle against a despised oppressor, you don’t worry about his marriages, past ideological indiscretions or salty language. You charge right behind him.” This is largely why Trump’s contradictions don’t matter.
[. . .]
logic and reason play less of a role in people’s decision-making than most of us care to think.
This brings us to what Trump now has. It’s something all successful politicians have to a degree and that every iconic one has in spades: an emotional bond with his supporters.
[. . .]

a true romantic bond is somewhat inscrutable, an emotional phenomenon, not an intellectual one. And it’s powerful enough to cause a woman to follow a man into a life of faith or a life of crime (Bonnie and Clyde); it explains the enduring good marriages — and the bad ones.
[. . .]
Ben Franklin observed, “You cannot reason a man out of a position he has not reasoned himself into.”
[. . .]

It’s as if Trump is courting Lady America with wine, roses and his alpha-male persona, while the Establishment candidates are lead-tongued nerds promising a tent with NSA surveillance, a bowl of soup and squatters on a burnt-out lawn.

Elite Needs To Chill And Learn to Love Donald Trump

[From article]
"If Trump wins the nomination, prepare for the end of the conservative party" -- the always articulate George Will expresses the angst many establishment (and some not-so-establishment) Republicans feel about their frontrunner:
If you look beyond Donald Trump’s comprehensive unpleasantness — is there a disagreeable human trait he does not have? — you might see this: He is a fundamentally sad figure. His compulsive boasting is evidence of insecurity. His unassuageable neediness suggests an aching hunger for others’ approval to ratify his self-admiration. His incessant announcements of his self-esteem indicate that he is not self-persuaded. Now, panting with a puppy’s insatiable eagerness to be petted, Trump has reveled in the approval of Vladimir Putin, murderer and war criminal.
[. . .]
It's hard to dispute Will's analysis, as far as it goes, but it only goes so far. No doubt The Donald exhibits some of the traits of an inferiority complex, but the real question is, so what? As Joe E. Brown says to Jack Lemmon at the end of Some Like It Hot, "Nobody's perfect."
[. . .]
If you want Donald Trump to be your friend, if you want him to be as conservative as Ronald Reagan, love The Donald to death. He will be your friend for life. And he will do what you wish, mostly. Praise every conservative statement out of his mouth and ignore the rest. It will probably change anyway.
And speaking of the fine art of ignoring, this leads me to something that Will, Charles Krauthammer and other of our best political minds seem to ignore themselves. Trump has kicked ideology to the curb for good reason.
[. . .]
Barack Obama has murdered America's magnificent sense of optimism -- the very thing that made this country unique, that propelled this country, and therefore much of the world, forward in a generally positive way through Republican and Democratic administrations.
Now it's the reverse. America, the global leader, is a despondent, pessimistic country, leaving a void to be filled by the worst imaginable actors like ISIS. Donald Trump wants to make her great again. Bravo for him. That is something we should all be applauding this Christmas. In fact, it is the most important thing of all.
[. . .]
First, we need our country back. We can worry about the ideological implications later. Merry Xmas.

Sophia Loren Gives Beauty Tips To Young Women

Sophia Loren
Photo: Getty Images

Sophia Loren was one of my first loves. This is how she looked when I was in love with her. Not much different from today.

[From article]
The legendary Oscar winner, well-preserved at 81, told us at Cipriani 42nd Street, “These young girls really need to be more careful and selective of what they are doing to their bodies and their faces. I mean, you do not know for sure if you are going to a good doctor . . . you can end up looking worse than what you thought you originally were.” So true!
“In my time,” Loren added, “an actress’ merit and skill was based on her talent. Now when people meet me, they pull out their phones to take pictures. I do not know much about social media, but it seems that that’s what makes people more famous. My era of Hollywood was much better — you were known for your skill and talent.”

Life's Greatest Gift

[From article]
“Everyone has two lives,” Hunter Thompson famously said. “The second one begins when you realize you only have one.”
That’s why mortality is life’s greatest gift, for facing death reawakens the vitality, urgency and aspiration that slumber under blankets of complacency.
[. . .]
It’s no joke, but a realization forged from life experience, that the only perfectly happy families are ones you don’t know well. The truth is, there are no perfect families because there are no perfect lives. But there are imperfect people who, despite their difficulties navigating life’s tumultuous waters, strive to perfect the world by living lives of goodness — like my mom.
[. . .]
After bringing into focus so many unexpected memories, it’s clear how our mothers are our first and often best teachers. In learning from those who preceded, and then passing on that legacy to those who follow, parents bestow their greatest gift, an inheritance that keeps on giving from generation to generation.
“It warms the hearts of parents to see their children’s connection to family and to know that the values and traditions you have tried to impart to the next generation have actually been caught,” wrote spiritual author Ron Wolfson in his new memoir, “Of Blessings and Kisses.”
[. . .]
As I strive in this holy season to recommit to being the person my mom believes I can be, I’m reminded of the moving theme song from the musical “Rent.” It asks this question: In the “525,600 minutes of a year, how do you measure the life of a woman or a man?”
“Measure your life in love,” it answers. “Seasons of love.”
Being reawakened to life’s fragility is a blessing, for it inspires us to live our minutes with greater intensity and goodness, to continuously love, dream and create. It motivates us to take a minute when appropriate to say, “I love you,” “Thank you” and “I’m sorry,” or to ask, “Is there anything I can do to help?” It may even mean telling a joke when you’re not really up to it.
While we still have time, “Remember the love, share love, spread love,” as “Rent” exhorts, knowing we’re neither the first nor last to love, just the lucky ones to do so now.

Ann Coulter Loves Donald Trump, "He Can Win." His Wife Knows.

Is this woman worried that Ann Coulter loves Donald Trump?

[From article]
“I love Trump. I love him, and I think he can win,” Ms. Coulter said. “I think he can win the nomination and I think he can win as a third party.”
The conservative commentator is one of the most vocal critics of the immigration system. She recently released a book, called “Adios America: The Left’s Plan to Turn Our Country into a Third World Hellhole,” in which she attacks both parties for not strengthening border security and not reducing the flow of people coming into the country — both legally and illegally.
On Friday, Ms. Coulter told the college students gathered at the Heritage Foundation that her first thought when Mr. Trump entered the GOP race was that she was glad that he would ensure immigration would get some attention.
Since then, she has come to believe that Mr. Trump, who has surged to the top of the GOP polls, has a real shot at winning the primary race, as well as the general election.
[. . .]

Ann Coulter philosopher

Mr. Trump could get a boost from the fact that the nation’s elected leaders have never followed through on their 30-year-old promise to secure the nation’s borders.
“Thirty years we have been lied to. I now think, it just occurred to be in the last week, that if he sticks it out, he could win the nomination,” she said, adding Mr. Trump has a better chance of winning than some of his well-known rivals. “If he continues, I think he is more likely to be the next president than Jeb Bush or Marco Rubio. I can tell you that.”

Unrequited Love Does Not Conquer All

Ewww. What does he see in her???

[From article]
The 20-year-old stunner — the daughter of “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Yolanda Hadid Foster — put her tony Soho apartment up for sale just days after alleged obsessed fan Marcell Porter, 35, was arrested June 29 for stalking her, sources said.
“She was scared,” a law enforcement source said.
“He’s very delusional. He was muttering to himself in the precinct. He was saying stuff like, ‘She’s going to need me. She needs me.’

“He’d wait for her outside her building for long stretches of time. He was milling around the area near the building.”
The source added that while Porter was in custody, he told investigators, “When are you going to release me? I have an appointment with her! I have to pick her up at the airport!”
[. . .]
“I LOVE U. I KNOW EVERYTHING NOW. WAIT FOR ME SOULMATE,” he wrote, according to a criminal complaint, adding another time, “WHY CAN’T YOU CALL ME? I WILL TALK TO U IN PERSON ASAP. I LOVE YOU ONCE AGAIN.”
[. . .]

Meanwhile, Porter has been arrested by the NYPD three previous times, including for fare-beating, shoplifting and trespassing at a Chelsea church that cares for the homeless.

Cambridge Police Going Door To Door To Provide Information, Love, Kosher For Passover Matzos and Easter Candy. No Wait. They want to see your apartment.

Rindge Towers, Cambridge MA

The named areas are all relatively poor neighborhoods. Why are they chosen? Do the police and the human services industrial complex (MA State Rep. Marie Parente's term), Cambridge division, believe that poor persons are dumb? That they do not know how to find the police? Does this have anything to do with illegal aliens who cannot speak English to explain that the police are their friends? Or that psychiatrists bring love to help them with anxieties and false happiness? Is this over extended and extremely proactive seeking out residents in need of police or human (psychiatric?) services? If the police do not have enough to keep them busy perhaps the City Manger should reduce the budget and size of the department. One personal idea is for the idle officers to address the multi-year criminal abuse of an elder citizen (I know, illegal aliens have priority for Cambridge government services), on property owned and operated by the President and Fellows of Harvard College. For the past 45 years crime families and their associates in police and FBI offices conducted and continue to conduct a brutal campaign of harassment, sleep disturbances, surveillance, telephone and computer tampering. Police might try learning how to stop high tech harassment of civilians by criminal police employees, and federal agents, who use secret technology. But alas police enjoy preying on harmless civilians, knowing to avoid dangerous, violent criminals.

Roosevelt Towers, Cambridge, MA

[From article]
Over the course of five Thursday nights from March to May, members of the Cambridge Police Community Relations and Youth and Family Services units will join personnel from the Department of Human Service Programs and visit residents at Rindge Avenue, Memorial Drive, Putnam Gardens, River Howard Homes, Woodrow Wilson Court, Roosevelt Towers, Walden Square, Jefferson Park, Washington Elms, Newtowne Court, Corcoran Park, and other areas.
“The goal of these outreach efforts is to give residents an opportunity to informally meet with personnel and officers, including our neighborhood sergeants and sector lieutenants, share public safety and human service program-related information and resources with residents, and discuss any questions or concerns residents may have,”

The Poop Generation

[From article]
Ayn Rand wrote that a nation’s culture is the sum of the intellectual achievements of individual men, which their fellow citizens have accepted in whole or in part, and which have influenced the nation’s way of life. Poo.
[. . .]
America today is increasingly anti-freedom, anti-truth, anti-ideas, anti-capitalsim – anti-reason. A nation built on a morality of reason has all but abandoned its foundational principles. Public schools and academia produce zombies – goose-steppers like the Hitler Youth – who are militant and violent in their imposition of the leftist/Islamic agenda. And when they do it, they congratulate themselves about how they have stood up against “fascism” and “intolerance,” when the intolerant fascists are they themselves. Intellectually, young Americans are the most docile conformists, no matter how vocally and self-righteously they declare themselves free.
[. . .]
The culture is ugly. The music is ugly, violent, and misogynistic. Every crime drama and suspense series is rife with the most unimaginable gore. Game of Thrones, Law and Order (Sex Crimes), American Horror Story – they’re all devoid of humanity and morality. Devoid of goodness. It’s a cultural rout. It’s not that the line between good and evil has been blurred – it’s nonexistent. We are living in a cultural free-for-all, or more accurately, a free fall.
Pain, blame, victimhood are the ideals.
[. . .]
What better icon for such a culture of terror than a pile of dung with a smiley face? It’s not just on phones; it’s on jewelry and shoes at Bloomingdales and Bergdorf Goodman. A ring featuring this image goes for $500, shoes for $340. It’s beloved.
A culture that would love such a thing is incapable of true humanity and love. Hollywood is incapable of writing or producing a Casablanca.
[. . .]
Logic and facts are scorned and derided; myths (global warning, “Islamophobia”) and feelings are held up as fact and science.
[. . .]
The left has worked so hard to make us miserable, and has succeeded.
[. . .]
Hollywood, once a force for good, morality, love and romance, is now a force for evil, degradation, and cultural rape, cloaked in self-righteousness.

Oliver North: Hillary Clinton 'Just Wrote Off Being President of the United States ...'

* * *

[From article]
Daniel Halper of the Weekly Standard provides a summary:
"This is what we call smart power," Clinton said to a small audience at Georgetown. "Using every possible tool and partner to advance peace and security. Leaving no one on the sidelines. Showing respect even for one's enemies. Trying to understand, in so far as psychologically possible, empathize with their perspective and point of view. Helping to define the problems, determine the solutions. That is what we believe in the 21st century will change -- change the prospects for peace."
[. . .]
Carol Brown adds:
If only we could go back in time and offer our respect, our understanding, and our empathy to Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, and all the rest, things could have turned out differently. Oh what fools we were to label any of them as enemies or as evil. And how outrageous that we dared put up a fight.
But that’s all in the past.

Billy Joel Learned About Love The Hard Way

[From article]
“You just need one — one person out of millions — to know and accept and love you for being, well, just the way you are . . . I see old folks walking down the street who look like they’ve been together 50 years, and there’s something very touching about it — that they’ve lasted so long. I used to wonder: How come I don’t have that? I can dream about it, think about it, write music and lyrics and sing about it. I can even try to achieve it again, and often have.”
His three tortured marriages — and the music they’ve inspired — are testament to that.

Dating Seldom Connected to Love

[From article]
Ms Winter emphasizes that she uses 'dating' in the traditional sense of the word, otherwise known as courtship, meaning she did not sleep with all 98 men.
Some of the dates were blind ones recommended by friends and colleagues, other men she met via personal ads, and she even met some through a professional matchmaker.
And yet time and time again, despite the variety of dates, she found the experience to be 'tedious'.

California's Love Candidate

[From article]
Though perhaps not a household name, Williamson is something of a celebrity: Her self-help books have earned her national recognition, and her weekly lectures on spirituality have made her a fixture in Los Angeles for over 30 years. Back in October, having at long last grown tired of politics as usual, frustrated with the Democratic party of which she has been a member all her life, and armed with a large grassroots following (she claims more than 400,000 Facebook fans and 200,000 Twitter followers), she announced her independent candidacy for Waxman’s seat and has been kissing proverbial babies ever since.
New Age spiritual teacher, guru to movie stars, friend of Oprah — she is both self-actualized and self-made. Born to a Jewish family in Houston in 1952, by the late 1970s, Williamson confesses, “I was a total mess.” After bouncing “from relationship to relationship, job to job, city to city, looking for some sense of identity or purpose,” she found herself living in New York, “seeking relief in food, drugs, people, or whatever else I could find to distract myself.”
[. . .]
As we file out of the Woman’s Club — our political apathy most heartily rebuffed, a nascent sense of brotherhood among us, the energy of a newfound love for our fellow man propelling us merrily toward the parking garage next door — a bearded, burnt-out-looking man sporting a grungy flannel under his “Marianne for Congress” T-shirt asks if anyone can give him a ride to a place called Café Gratitude in Venice. An awkward silence ensues. Nobody in the crowd responds, or even makes eye contact with him, doing their best to ignore his existence.
And so it is.

Obama's Weird Love For The Muslim Brotherhood

[From article]
Nevertheless, the president of the United States is not amused. We read our government is secretly “reviewing” our support of Egypt. They are urging the Egyptian military to negotiate with the Brotherhood, the same religious fanatics who evidently just told 24 Egyptian policemen to lie face down in the Sinai desert and summarily executed them, the same madmen who are running all over Egypt burning down Christian churches.
What is the explanation for this absolutely self-destructive, even idiotic, policy on our part?
There can be only one — the president of the United States is actually psychologically disturbed. He does not react in a normal manner. I know that’s a vicious and importunate thing to say, but the reaction to Egypt (and to Benghazi, for that matter) is not one of a psychologically healthy human being.
It’s more than the narcissism of which he is often accused, as bad as that is. It’s a form of extreme neurotic attraction to (notably Islamic) religious fascism.
