Harvard University Degree a Plus in Boston City Council, But Worshipped in Cambridge City Council

Michelle Wu, Boston City Council President

“'People very much respect the work that goes into a Harvard degree,' Michelle Wu, President of Boston’s City Council, added." Not as bad as Cambridge where City Councilors worship Harvard University and its graduates. Most Cambridge councilors have a degree from one Harvard tub or another. It is almost a requirement to be elected to the Cambridge City Council, a subsidiary of Harvard University.

New York City Mayor Trying To Destroy New York City

Words of politicians are cultural propaganda warfare. They do not invite homeless people into their homes to use bathrooms. Spending Other People's Money Society rules. Eighteen-percent-of-the-vote DeBlasio does not want to, and is unable to govern. He likes to campaign and prance around as head of city, nothing to do with being head of city government. The pattern of the White House legend-in-his-own-mind is replicated in Gracie Mansion.
[From article]
Rome fell. New York is falling down. It is filled with illegalities and filth as a result of the good intentions and failed ideas of liberals. Politicians pretend to want the best while they deliver the worst.
De Blasio and New York City Council speaker Melissa Mark-Mark-Vivirito have decriminalized public urination and quality-of-life offenses. Are they kidding? De-civilizing a beautiful city is not a positive. It is a fall from grace.
The Broken Windows theory states that small crimes lead to major crimes. De Blasio and Mark-Vivirito should study sociology. Their ignorance is ruining our city.
They pretend to be kind to the poor while they destroy their lives and leave them scantily clothed with no toilet paper on street corners. They whisper sweet things in bums ears while they throw their lives into sewers.
De Blasio and Mark-Vivirito want to lower the quality of life in New York. They are doing a good job at making New York into a third-world country.
When I get on a subway, there are small Mexican bands singing and break-dancers stepping on my feet. I don't interfere with their solitude; why should they bother me? And I'm supposed to tip them for failing to entertain me?
There are bums underground moaning that they were injured in the war and that they're hungry veterans.
[. . .]
The tramps complain if you don't give them a dollar.
Another thing that bothers me is allowing bikes on trains. If these environmentally oriented bike riders want to keep the world clean, they should ride in the streets. I am sick of their taking up an inordinate amount of space in the subway cars. There is no law against it, but there should be.
Mark-vivirito wants to make drinking alcohol legal in the streets, encouraging us to violence and endangering those who are not drunks to get drunk.
Mark-Mark-Vivirito and de Blasio feel that black and Hispanic New Yorkers are arrested at a disproportionate rate. Not true. Minorities are committing crimes at a disproportionate rate and are being arrested proportionately to their actual crimes.
I do not understand the new sympathy toward crooks. Even Obama wants to let nonviolent crooks out of jail. I went to jail for tax evasion. It was a non-violent crime. I still deserved to go.
[. . .]
They know that what they do is stupid, but they do it anyhow because it sounds good.

New York City Council Votes Itself A Substantial Raise

Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito voted yes on the measure, and her salary will climb to $164,500.

[From article]
With just seven dissenters, City Council members on Friday went above the recommendations of a salary commission to award themselves a 32 percent raise — to $148,500.
That’s $10,000 more than the mayor-appointed commission had said was justified after months of extensive research, and well above the current salary of $112,500.
The three Republican members, Steve Matteo and freshman Joe Borelli of Staten Island, and Eric Ulrich of Queens, issued a joint statement explaining why they voted no.Modal Trigger
“There is a critically important reason the City Charter requires any changes to salaries for elected officials be evaluated and ultimately recommended by an independent body: because there is an inherent and obvious conflict of interest in having to vote oneself a pay raise,” the trio said.
“We felt the salary recommendations made by the Quadrennial Commission were the starting point of a public conversation about our jobs and our compensation. However, once it became clear that the proposed legislation by the Council would go beyond those recommendations, it precluded any potential support from our delegation.”
Democrats Elizabeth Crowley of Queens and Alan Maisel of Brooklyn voted no without explanation.
[. . .]
Forty members voted yes on the measure, including Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito — whose own salary will climb even higher, to $164,500.
She said the extra pay was justified because the commission didn’t take into account one of the council’s reform measures to greatly restrict outside income.
“We believe that there’s a value that should be added to the loss of that potential outside income. It was a modest amount of $10,000, and that is what we did in terms of that consideration,” she told reporters prior to the vote.
“That’s a serious reform that is way overdue and has been demanded of this council over years and possibly decades, and so we’re taking that into account.”
Only a handful of council members, whose jobs are considered part-time, currently earn substantial pay in other gigs.
The pay hike is retroactive to Jan. 1.

Mississippi City Councilman Suggested Throwing Rocks and Bottles At Police

[From article]
Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant issued a statement Saturday denouncing remarks a local elected official made about throwing rocks, bricks and bottles at police officers.
Bryant also called for an investigation to determine if Jackson Councilman Kenneth Stokes’ remarks “represent criminal threats against law enforcement officers.”
Stokes told reporters Thursday that officers from surrounding jurisdictions put Jackson children in danger when they pursue suspects wanted for minor crimes into his neighborhood, Fox 40 News reported.

Did New York City Mayor and City Councilman Violate First Amendment Rights of Many?

Threats by the NYC Mayor and the City Councilman may constitute a chilling effect, which is a First Amendment violation. Not only to Donald Trump but also to others who may be fearful of expressing constitutionally protected speech for fear of being denied access to the city government for making proposals and engaging in contracts for products or services. The right of others to hear Trump's constitutionally protected speech is another First Amendment violation. Here's one definition.

In constitutional law, the inhibition or discouragement of the legitimate exercise of a a constitutional right, especially one protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, by the potential or threatened prosecution under, or application of, a law or sanction.

[From article]
New York City's mayor has had enough Trump, thank you.
During a press conference on Monday, Mayor Bill de Blasio said that while he's uncertain whether the city can break several existing contracts with the Republican presidential hopeful, one thing is clear: There will be no future deals between the Big Apple and Trump.
"My impression is that unless there has been some breaking of a contract or something that gives us a legal opportunity to act, I'm not sure we have a specific course of action," de Blasio told reporters.
"But we're certainly not looking to do any business with him going forward," the mayor added.
[. . .]

New York City Councilman Mark Levine also has begun circulating a petition calling on the city to sever its ties with Trump.
"Our parks are for everyone," the Manhattan Democrat said. "Trump's continued ownership of parks concessions runs directly contrary to that spirit."
[. . .]

"What Mr. Trump said about Senator McCain was unacceptable," the mayor said. "Senator McCain is a war hero by any measure, and [Trump] really should apologize for that. And I've said repeatedly, Donald Trump doesn't represent the views of the people of this city -- certainly not of the majority."
De Blasio added, "But this is an issue for folks in the other party to work through. I just think what he said in the last few days was reprehensible."

New York City Councilman Denounces White House Anti Semitism

[From article]
In an impassioned response, Councilman David Greenfield observed that every Middle East country -- except Israel -- is not democratic and persecutes people of other faiths, gays, women, and those with opinions inconsistent with those of their governments. He concluded, “What you saw here today was naked, blind anti-Semitism.”
Greenfield’s point is critical. Those who attack and demonize Israel for its imperfections in the face of the atrocities committed by its Arab neighbors are not just hypocrites. There is only one explanation for their irrational condemnations: hatred of Jews. And there is no difference between protests by pro-Palestinians and protests that regularly emanate from the White House.
[. . .]
When Biden was in Israel and housing permits were announced, the uproar from the White House was disproportionately obnoxious. Yet when Obama was in Saudi Arabia this week and three people were beheaded, he said nothing. In fact, his laissez faire attitude about Saudi human rights abuses is on full display in his recent interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria

Baltimore City Councilor Criticizes Obama, and Mayor

Baltimore City Councilman Carl Stokes (D)

[From article]
Baltimore City Councilman Carl Stokes (D) criticized President Obama and Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake (D) for referring to rioters in Baltimore as “thugs” saying, “just call them n*ggers” in an interview on Tuesday’s “OutFront” on CNN.
When asked if “thugs” was the right term to describe the riot, Stokes said, “no, of course it’s not the right word to call our children thugs. These are children who have been set aside, marginalized, who have not been engaged by us. No, we don’t have to call them thugs.”
He was then pressed on whether that justifies the rioting, he stated that while the rioting was unjustified, “calling them thugs — just call them n*ggers. Just call them n*ggers. No, we don’t have to call them by names such as that. We don’t have to do that. That is exactly what we have set them to. Now, when you say ‘come on,’ come on what? You wouldn’t call your child a thug if they should do something that would not be what you would expect them to do.”

New York City Council Wants To Weaken Police Arrest Powers. FBI Informant, Tax Cheat, Rev. Al Sharpton Agrees

Trickle down economics may not work, but trickle down lawlessness certainly does. After 7 years of a lawless White House and Attorney General, ordinary people are imitating federal officials and their attitudes toward laws. It was only a matter of time before laws became optional under the Obama-Holder doctrine. One concept that politicians seem unable to understand is the the legal notion of jurisdiction. City officials may be able to reduce city ordinances to violations, but state laws are another matter. They just do not have jurisdiction. But again under Obama-Holder omniscient morally superior elitists can ignore inconvenient laws.

[From article]
A pair of bills proposed in the City Council would decriminalize several low-level offenses.
The list also includes bicycling on a sidewalk, being in a park after dark, littering, failing to obey a sign and making excessive noise.
Reverend Al Sharpton says over policing of minor crimes like these often creates tension between community and law enforcement.
“Until police understand mutual respect, we will continue having these tensions” he said.

The city’s top cop also said that “if you remove the ability to have a penalty for [an] offense, then you lose the ability to be in control of the streets.”
Bratton’s dire prediction was his harshest assessment of a plan by Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverto to turn a host of anti-social behavior into civil offenses instead of crimes.
He made the comments outside a Citizens Crime Commission breakfast in Manhattan, where the state’s chief judge said “common sense” dictated that ignoring quality-of-life offenses could lead to more serious crimes.
But Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman also said the nearly 400,000 summonses issued in the city last year were overwhelming the court system.

New York City Councilman Sentenced To Ten Years in Prison For Bribery

[From article]
Saying he believes former City Councilman Dan Halloran perjured himself at trial, a federal judge threw the book at the disgraced pol on Wednesday — sentencing him to 10 years behind bars for masterminding a failed $200,000 bribery scheme to get Democratic state Sen. Malcolm Smith the Republican line in the 2013 mayoral election.
The US Probation Department had recommended 6 ½ to 8 years of prison for Halloran, who tried to claim insanity as a defense at trial and is a “prince” in a pagan order that includes public floggings.
But White Plains federal Judge Kenneth Karas agreed with prosecutors that the Queens Republican deserved a harsher sentence because he “quarterbacked” the bribery scheme and lied under oath. The feds had asked Karas to hand Halloran a sentence of 12 1/2 to 15 ½ years behind bars.
“For five days, he lied on the stand,” Karas said. “It was egregious.”
[. . .]
Halloran negotiated for $110,000 in bribes to be paid out to three city GOP leaders through the mayoral-race-fixing scheme, and he sought another $75,000 in payments for himself. He was caught on tape telling an undercover FBI agent and a crooked Rockland County developer working with the feds that money “greases the wheels” in New York politics.
To get the GOP line, Smith — then one of the state’s top Democrats — would have needed the support of three of the five borough Republican committees. Queens and the Bronx were allegedly secured for the scheme, but Smith never secured a third borough committee.

New York City Council A Situation Comedy

Among my ideas was to write a television comedy called City Council using video tape from councils throughout the country. But I could never have made up some of the real actions taken by New York City Councilors described in this article. Cambridge City Council is sane compared to this.

[From article]
de Blasio came into office with an advantage that his recent predecessors lacked: overwhelming support in the city council, whose members, as one lawmaker put it, are like a “cult of true believers,” eager to follow their leader. In New York, the mayor makes most of the news, and it’s easy to ignore the city council. That would be a mistake. Not only did de Blasio himself come from its ranks, where he spent years building alliances; New York’s next mayor may well be a sitting council member today—and, if so, judging by the views of some of the council’s leading figures, the de Blasio years might be ironically remembered for how moderate they were.
[. . .]
Insiders had considered Mark-Viverito a long shot for the speakership. She grew up in privilege in Puerto Rico, where her ophthalmologist father, who owned his own dual-engine Cessna, founded a hospital that, after his death, sold for $165 million. She and her family own properties in San Juan and along the coast that provide them with a stream of rental income. Under the auspices of a program aimed at middle-income, first-time home buyers, Mark-Viverito purchased her current home, a three-family structure on East 111th Street, for $350,000, and paid off the mortgage after only ten years. The property is now estimated to be worth $1.2 million. Despite appearing at Zuccotti Park during the Occupy Wall Street sit-in and announcing on camera that she belongs to the “99 percent,” Mark-Viverito has the real-estate portfolio of a 1 percenter.
[. . .]
Melissa Mark added her mother’s maiden name, Viverito, after graduating from Columbia University.
[. . .]
Including Mark-Viverito as speaker, the caucus, with 18 seats, now makes up more than one-third of the 51-member council and dominates the council politically, holding all leadership posts and most key committee chairmanships. Its members are unremittingly left-wing.
[. . .]
As a council member, Chin lifted the protective-landmark designation on an early-nineteenth-century wood-framed building on the Bowery, one of the few such historic structures remaining in Manhattan. The 1817 building, owned by a Chinese-American bank that contributed generously to Chin’s campaign, was quickly torn down to allow for the development of a generic, eight-story brick-and-glass structure. Chin defended the erasure of a remnant of New York’s Federal-era past, saying that the new building would offer below-market “affordable office space.” “Affordability” in reference to housing is a legal term pertaining to residents’ income. There is no equivalent term for commercial real estate, so Chin concocted the phrase to give cover to her donors.
[. . .]
Rather than condemn the violence, [Letitia] James instead chided the restaurant’s owners for “irresponsible” management in holding their promotion on the eve of a school holiday, when the teenagers would be more likely to go out for the evening. “I want this Tuesday restaurant promotion stopped, or the lease of this business revoked,” she demanded.
[. . .]
Council Member Jumaane Williams of Brooklyn [. . .] sponsored a resolution calling on police to “stop arresting people for committing minor infractions in the transit system.” According to the text of the resolution, being arrested for littering, gambling, or urinating in the subway can be “very disruptive” to the arrestee. Moreover, being arrested is “overly punitive and unfair” and can even cause “financial hardship.” Clearly, Williams’s policy priorities don’t include protecting subway riders from disorderly or violent behavior.
The only reason that Council Member Inez Barron isn’t a Progressive Caucus member is because the group’s politics aren’t radical enough. In January 2014, Barron, a former state assembly member, assumed the seat formerly held by her husband, Charles Barron; he, in turn, will succeed her in Albany this year. A former Black Panther, Charles Barron was known during his time on the council for never standing during the Pledge of Allegiance, for inviting Zimbabwean dictator Robert Mugabe to City Hall, and for saying that he wanted to go up to the next white person and “slap him, just for my mental health.”
[. . .]
Few council members have much experience of professional life outside politics. Many worked as staffers to council members before becoming council members themselves. One, Progressive Caucus member Richie Torres of the Bronx, said in an interview with The Nation, “Do I look like a politician to you? I’m a 25-year-old college dropout who grew up in public housing. I’m gay. I’m Afro-Latino. I hardly have the characteristics people associate with a politician, but here I am.” Council Member Torres had previously served on the staff of a council member from an adjoining district. He was essentially selected by the local machine to fill a vacancy. So when he asks, “Do I look like a politician to you?” the answer, more or less, is yes.
[. . .]
The quirky personalities and often zany ideas of New York’s progressive council members can make for amusing reading, but the job of governing a city of 8 million people is no joke.
[. . .]
In short, the city faces serious challenges and needs serious leaders to meet them. Based on the quality of its political bench, New York could be in real trouble soon.

Father Of Pennsylvania Teens Stopped By Police Wants Chief Fired; Councilman Shot Dead By Black Gang

Police Chief Andre Williams

[From article]

The mayor of Chester – a city already reeling from gang violence after the killing of a City Councilman last month – said Tuesday she still supports Police Chief Andre Williams after the father of twin high school scholar-athletes who were handcuffed during a traffic stop called for the chief to be fired.

Read more here: http://www.heraldonline.com/2014/12/09/6608501/chester-mayor-all-confidence-in.html?sp=/100/104/109/129/&ihp=0#storylink=cpy

Odell Williams, 69, a city councilman and former Chester police officer, was gunned down Nov. 4 in what police say was a slaying by five alleged gang members, who are black. Sheriff Underwood said that gang members made death threats against him, his officers and their families during the investigation.

[. . .]
The father of black scholar-athlete twins is calling for the firing of Chester Police Chief Andre Williams after the chief pulled over his sons, and officers drew guns on and handcuffed the teens during a traffic stop on known gang turf.
It’s the first skirmish in Chester County’s police war on gangs that has boiled over since the Nov. 4 drive-by shooting death of City Councilman Odell Williams. Five alleged gang members were charged in connection with the shooting.
The incident comes amid national protests and concerns about how police deal with black men.
[. . .]
What is clear is that Chief Williams, who is black, pulled over Cardan Williams, 16, who was driving with his brother Caymen, 16, at about 8:20 p.m. Nov. 21. [. . .] What is in dispute is the manners Chief Williams and other officers used during the stop in a Chester neighborhood known to police as “E-block” gang territory.
The police chief said he saw the car Cardan Williams was driving pull out in front of another driver in an unsafe manner, and that when he turned on his blue lights and tried to pull him over, the teen did not stop for more than a half-mile. Failure to stop for blue lights is a felony in South Carolina.
[. . .]
Police are employing even more safety measures in the streets, concerned for their own and others’ safety after gang members made death threats against officers following the shooting of Odell Williams, who was himself a retired police officer.
“In a felony traffic stop, we do have guns out,” Williams said. “In light of this neighborhood and what has been happening with gangs, I am not going to put myself and my guys in danger.”

Washington DC City Council Repeals Religious Exemption

[From article]
The impact of the repeal is likely to be broad, since the city’s Human Rights Act will prohibit religious schools from acting in accordance with their beliefs regarding sexual morality in decisions related to funding, facilities, campus organizations, benefits, etc. The schools cannot even withhold “endorsement, approval or recognition” of those promoting messages at odds with the religious teachings of the school about appropriate sexual conduct.
While other states have been acting to protect religious liberties, D.C. is trying to narrow the permissible decisions and even speech of religious schools. It is a warning that carefully constructed compromises on anti-discrimination bills are only temporary.
Congress should immediately act to restore this basic, narrow limitation on the power of D.C. to interfere with the teachings and practices of religious schools.

Los Angeles City Council Wants To Pay People To Vote For Them

[From article]
the Los Angeles City Ethics Commission, which has a latitudinarian understanding of ethical behavior, has a perfectly awful idea. It is urging the City Council to consider ways of paying — starchier ethicists might call it bribing — people to vote.
Some ideas are so loopy that they could only be conceived by governments, which are insulated from marketplace competition that is a constant reminder of reality. And governments are generally confident that their constituents need to be improved by spending the constituents' money. The supposed problem for which the "pay the voters" idea purports to be a solution is this: Few Los Angeles residents are voting.
Especially alarming to those who choose to be alarmed is the fact that only 23.3 percent of those eligible to vote did so in last year's mayoral election.
[. . .]
Los Angeles is a one-party city in a one-party state. It is a state in which one power — organized labor, especially government employees' unions — is the dominant political force, no matter who is chosen to govern from a coterie of candidates representing faintly variant shades of progressivism.
[. . .]
One suggested measure to conquer nonvoters' lassitude is to create a special lottery and give everyone who shows up at the polls a chance to win, say, $100,000. Lotteries thrive on the irrational hopes of people not thinking clearly about probabilities, which is why governments love lotteries to raise funds. And why there would be nice symmetry in using a lottery to further decrease the reasonableness of our politics.

NYC Assembly Candidate Shows His Love For Dictatorship, Black Racism

Cambridge City Councilor E. Denise Simmons used to display a Zimbabwe flag on her desk during council meetings, contrary to US law for several weeks. She ignored my letters complaining, as did the veteran's department of the city. It was ignored under the rubric of free expression. But it was not protected speech in so far as it violated a federal statute.

[From article]
Charles Barron famously hosted Zimbabwe’s repressive President Robert Mugabe at City Hall as a freshman councilman in 2002–and said yesterday he would like to repeat the performance in his first term at the state capital.
In an exclusive interview with the Observer, Mr. Barron, who won a Democratic primary for an open Assembly seat last week and is very likely to crush his GOP rival, expressed hope that he could persuade the foreign official to visit Albany.
“I would love for him to come to Albany. I would love for him to come anywhere in the United States, really,” Mr. Barron said in an interview at his former campaign office in East New York, Brooklyn. “I think he’s a shining example of an African leader on the African continent.”
[. . .]
“He was one of the few African leaders who had the courage to take the land back from the settlers,” said Mr. Barron, comparing him favorably to the late South African leader Nelson Mandela, who he argued allowed whites to retain too much property.
[. . .]
He seized control of the nation in 1983, after initiating an ethnic cleansing campaign against a minority tribe that led to between 10,000 and 20,000 deaths.
In 1987, he was declared president and instituted martial law. He also enacted draconian laws against homosexuals, whom he has described as “worse than dogs and pigs” and demanded be arrested on sight.
He has been repeatedly re-elected in referendums marred by the use of military force against rival political parties.
[. . .]
“All my heroes were America’s enemies,” Mr. Barron said.
Mr. Barron was term-limited out of the City Council last year, but voters in his home neighborhood of East New York elected him last week to succeed his wife, Inez Barron, in the state legislature. Ms. Barron had stepped down from the Assembly to take her husband’s Council seat.

New York City Councilman Arrested Charged With Misappropriation of Taxpayer Funds

[From article]
“Not too many people have stood before the cameras and said they’re innocent,” Wills said after being released without bail from Queens Supreme Court.
When a reporter countered that a number of busted pols actually had said exactly that, Wills, a Democrat, said: “That’s disrespectful.”
“I am not resigning on charges. This is America, people. We are presumed innocent before we are proven guilty,” he said.
“But because I know what I am, where I come from and the color I am, it doesn’t really work like that with you guys. But I am presumed innocent and that’s what we are going with.”

Posted February 12, 2014 9:16 PM ET; Last updated February 21, 2014 9:55 AM ET

In his two-part statistical analysis of voting in Cambridge, (Rick Snedeker, "Let’s end Proportional Representation in Cambridge," Feb. 11, 2014; and "Exhausted votes and mandates in Cambridge's PR system," Feb. 20, 2014, Cambridge Chronicle) Mr. Snedeker fails to distinguish between the form of City government, Plan E under state law, and the method of elections. He does not mention the reason for the city government charter change in 1940. Some suggest it was corruption. Why is that subject seldom discussed by voters, officials and journalists? Especially in a one party state, even after public officials are jailed. What part of "Power corrupts." do the evolved superior Cambridge population not understand? Have the genes of Cambridge voters been cleansed of mendacity, sadism, greed and common sense? How often are integrity and common sense issues in elections?

The importance of acknowledging the reason for proportional voting is called the Fallacy of Chesterton's Fence. If you do not know the reason for a procedure, process or law, you may not repeal it. But if you understand why the rule or law exists, then you may be allowed to change it.

In George G. Szpiro's wonderful book, Numbers Rule, the author explains the many forms of elections tried throughout history. None of them are perfect. Some have the opposite of desired results, e.g., eliminating the best candidates. Finally Snedecker does not distinguish between low and high information voters.
Mr. Snedeker's interest in government is noble. Cambridge City government is run by people elected under one system. They are bound to act under another set of laws. How closely do these people exercise their power according to law? City Council meetings indicate the amount of lawlessness of the city government. Motions to suspend the rules are the most frequently heard motion.
There are serious dysfunctions of city, state and U.S. government mechanisms, including elections. But aside from pointing out alleged flaws in the current voting system, according to his standards, he makes no proposals to improve the system. Was this system of voting established for a reason? He does not discuss it.

Anapolis MD City Council, Democrats, Want To Reduce Power of Republican Mayor

[From article]
Democratic Alderman Ross Arnett of Ward 8 tells The Capital he will introduce a charter amendment to move Annapolis to a council-manager style of government. The city manager would report directly to the City Council, not the mayor.

Cambridge Resident Knows the Future

[An edited version of this letter was published online at the Cambridge Chronicle April 9, 2013

James Recht, MD, Harvard Medical School

Cambridge letter writer supports the City Council effort for the City pension fund to get "rid of stocks, bonds or investment funds that are unethical or that pose a threat to the health of ones community." He adds, "Fossil fuel investments are both." (James Recht, Letter, "Cambridge should end its fossil fuel investments, " Cambridge Chronicle, Apr 04, 2013) He provides no evidence of his claims beyond one article in Nature Magazine regarding global warming. The letter exhibits certainty of a zealot, not saying that the writer is one. The notion of ethics can be argued with less certainty against divestment. Most remarkable is his claim about the future worth of stocks and bonds of energy companies, citing one article. How does he know this? I thought only psychiatrists could predict the future. This citizen lacks understanding of how the City government works. The only power the City Council has is to hire and to fire the City Manager. Everything else is his only to decide allegedly based on law and the Constitution. With seven councilors supporting the City Manager at present it is unlikely that the Manager will do more than pretend to listen to the Council each week for their weekly TV performances.
