Updated: Pennsylvania Team Arrested At Holland Tunnel On Way To Rescue Drug Addicts

Three people have been arrested outside a New York City tunnel after police found this huge cache of weapons in their vehicle. The collection included rifles, ballistic vests and a camouflage helmet.

This is the tragic young mother-of-two whose fatal heroin overdose sparked the bungled rescue mission that ended in the arrest of three heavily armed Pennsylvania 'drug vigilantes'.
Sierra Schmitt, 20 - mom to four-year-old twin boys - was found dead in bed on Monday morning after she visited New York City to do drugs and party.
Close friend Jenea Patterson, 17, woke up next to Schmitt's body and made a panicked call to her former youth counselor, Kimberly Arendt - one of three self-styled heroin crusaders who set off to try to save her in a monster truck laden with guns.
Arendt, 29, was arrested near the New Jersey side of the Holland Tunnel on Tuesday along with John Cramsey, 50, and Dean Smith, 53, after cops pulled them over for a cracked windscreen and found a huge cache of firearms and ammo.

Kimberly Arendt (left), John Cramsey (center) and Dean Smith (right), appearing in Hudson County Court, New Jersey, via video link following their arrest outside New York's Holland Tunnel on Tuesday, were taken into custody as they drove to New York to rescue Patterson after she called Arendt in panic.

The trio - part of a group called 'Enough is Enough' that claims to save heroin-addled kids from pushers - were held on Wednesday on $75,000 cash bail after they were charged with weapons offences and possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
But in an exclusive interview with Daily Mail Online, Schmitt's mother Mandy Powell, 38, sprung to their defense, saying: 'These guys shouldn't be in jail - they are heroes not criminals.
'To do that for somebody else's child, I give them all the credit in the world. I just wish they could have got to my daughter in time.'

Schmitt's mother Mandy Powell, 38, sprung to the trio's defense, saying they should not be in jail and said she wished they got to her daughter sooner.

Powell had particular praise for ringleader Cramsey - a shooting range boss who lost his 20-year-old daughter Alexandria in February from an overdose of Fentanyl and heroin.
'He's right - enough is enough,' said Powell, a married rest area worker who raised Schmitt in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. 'We've both lost a daughter and someone has to get on top of this.
'I'd never heard of any of them until their names came up on the news but they have my full support. I'd like to meet them and thank them for trying to make a difference.'
Schmitt and Patterson are believed to have headed to Brooklyn's Bedford–Stuyvesant neighborhood to meet two men for a weekend of drinking and hard partying.
It is believed that Schmitt was injected with a 'hotshot' - a strong dose of heroin that rendered her unconscious.
'As far as I know they were with two gentlemen,' said Powell, who said she was still trying to piece together the fateful events after speaking to police, the coroner, and exchanging messages with Patterson.
[. . .]
'Jenea told me the two guys made them shoot up,' she added. 'Sierra passed out and one of the guys apparently said: "We're not gonna have much fun with her".
Powell said her daughter went off the rails and turned to drugs and alcohol after losing custody of her twins.
'She loved them as much as any mom could. But she was too young, too immature, and she couldn't cope,' she said.
'After she lost them she started getting wild and going out. She was partying, drinking alcohol - she gave me a run for my money, that's for sure.
'She was hanging out with the wrong people and ended up going to New York more and more because of the fast-paced life.
'She started changing, she got angrier, more demanding - but she would still call me faithfully every day. She was still my loving daughter.
'Sierra never kept anything from me and about half a year ago she told me she used heroin. She had been clean for a month - and then this happened.
'She was outgoing, she loved everyone, but she was too trusting. I just need to know what happened in that room.'

The gun range owner who was arrested alongside two others outside of a New York City tunnel with a cache of weapons turned into a self-styled vigilante after tragically losing his 20-year-old daughter to a heroin overdose this year.
John Cramsey, 50, who runs Higher Ground Tactical in Emmaus, Pennsylvania, was with Dean Smith, 52, and 29-year-old Kimberly Arendt when they were pulled over outside the Holland Tunnel on Tuesday.
Authorities first stopped the group for a cracked windshield, before multiple loaded guns, rifles, knives, ballistic vests and a camouflage helmet were discovered.
When questioned, they described themselves as self-styled vigilantes, according to reports, and were on their way to a Brooklyn hotel where they wanted to 'extract' a teenager from a bad situation that possibly involved heroin.
The trio was detained on the four-month anniversary of the day Cramsey's daughter, Alexandria 'Lexii' Cramsey, died of a heroin and fentanyl overdose.
The 20-year-old girl, who passed away on February 21, was found with her boyfriend, Marquillis Calhoun, who was also dead inside of a Pennsylvania house.

They were detained on the four-month anniversary of the day Cramsey's daughter, Alexandria 'Lexii' Cramsey (pictured), died of a heroin overdose.

Following her death, the father consistently shared posts about it on Facebook and the battle against the drug.
In a post from February, he described himself as 'an addict' for his late-daughter, who worked as a professional model with three agencies in Atlanta, Philadelphia and Mexico.
'Now, I want to personally address the confusion of why we proudly display the 'SHOOT YOUR LOCAL HEROIN DEALER' decals,' Cramsey wrote. 'Who are you to judge me for my opinion.'
'Grow up and either get involved...or get out of here!' he added.
Cramsey also spoke in an interview not long after her death about visiting the place where she died in Allentown.
Just before he was arrested on Tuesday, Cramsey wrote on Facebook: 'I'm currently 11 miles outside of Brooklyn New York and going to a hotel to extract a 16 year old girl who went up there to Party with a few friends.
'One of those friends she went up there with will not be returning.
'This young lady from Wilkes Barre is scared and wants to come home. Last night she woke to find her friends body next to her in the same bed were her friend died of another heroin overdose.
'The Child named [censored] and she is from the Wilkes Barre area.
'A Facebook message to the Mother and the Brother with no response yet. I'm bringing her out of NY today and anybody else in that hotel that wants to go home too.'
Cramsey is believed to have tried to make similar rescues in the past few months.

Cramsey is believed to have made similar 'rescues' in recent months.

A picture of the fluorescent Dodge truck believed to be involved shows it covered with logos for the gun range. A sign in the back window reads: 'We The People'.
When Daily Mail Online reached Higher Ground Tactical by phone, they said they had heard something about the arrest but couldn't comment any further.
Around 2,000 rounds of ammunition were also discovered inside, according to reports.
One of the gun clips had 'Merica' written on and another had 'United We Stand'.
The Joint Terrorism Task Force is assisting in the investigation.
They said there was 'no nexus to terrorism,' according to NBC New York.
Law enforcement sources said they were 'gun authorities.'
Authorities believe the suspects were in possession of the firearms as part of criminal activity, likely heroin related.
Drugs were also found in the vehicle along with the guns, according to one law enforcement official.
One of the suspects allegedly told officers they were on their way to Queens.
A source initially told CBS New York they were going to shoot a rival dealer.
suspects reportedly said they wanted to save a friend who is on heroin and being held against her will in Brooklyn.
Police are still working to verify their story and the investigation is ongoing.
The Holland Tunnel carries Interstate 78 under the Hudson River and connects Jersey City with Manhattan.
It is one of the busiest commuter routes into New York City.
More than 34million vehicles use it every year.
A Port Authority spokesman told Daily Mail Online: 'Astute Port Authority Police work led to the stoppage of a vehicle on the New Jersey side of the Holland Tunnel this morning, leading to the arrest of three individuals from the state of Pennsylvania on a variety of charges related to illegal possession of guns and ammunition.
'At this time, the investigation is continuing, but the agency does not believe the incident is terrorism-related
'At about 07.40 hours a motor vehicle was stopped by Port Authority Police at the Holland Tunnel, NJ Toll Plaza for an equipment violation (cracked windshield).
'Multiple weapons (Rifles and handguns) some loaded. Under arrest are 2 males in their 50's and a female in her 20's. Charges are pending.'

Democratic U.S. Rep. Convicted Of Racketeering, After Son Was Sentenced To Five Years For Bank and Tax Fraud

Longtime Democratic representative Chaka Fattah was convicted Tuesday to charges stemming from his efforts to repay an illegal $1 million campaign loan.

[From article]
A veteran Pennsylvania congressman was convicted Tuesday in a racketeering case that largely centered on various efforts to repay an illegal $1 million campaign loan related to his unsuccessful 2007 mayoral bid.
U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah was found guilty of all counts against him, including racketeering, fraud and money laundering. His lawyers had argued that the schemes were engineered without Fattah's knowledge by two political consultants who pleaded guilty in the case.
The 59-year-old Democrat had been in Congress since 1995 and served on the powerful House Appropriations Committee. But he lost the April primary and his bid for his 12th term. His current term ends Jan. 2.
Fattah had little reaction to the verdict, but he kept a smile on his face as he conferred with his lawyers afterward.
He will remain free on bail. A judge set sentencing for Oct. 4.
Fattah told reporters as he was leaving the courtroom: "Well, it's a tough day, but I do want to thank the jurors for their service." He said he will confer with his lawyers on the next step.
Prosecutors said Fattah routed federal grant money and nonprofit funds through his consultants to pay back the illegal loan.
His wife, Philadelphia TV news anchor Renee Chenault-Fattah, took a leave after her husband's indictment and then quit in February. She was cited in the case over the sham sale of her Porsche, which prosecutors said was a bribe. But she was never charged with any wronging, and she said the sale was legitimate.
In a related case, his son, Chaka "Chip" Fattah Jr., was convicted on charges of bank and tax fraud and sentenced in February to five years in prison. A jury found he took part in a scheme as a subcontractor to defraud the Philadelphia school district.
Justice Department lawyer Jonathan Kravis said in his closing argument that Chaka Fattah Sr. used federal grants and nonprofit funds to enrich his family and friends.
Defense lawyers acknowledged Fattah might have gotten himself in financial trouble after a costly mayoral bid, but they said any help from friends amounted to gifts, not bribes.
Many of them came from co-defendant Herbert Vederman, a wealthy friend who had dreams of scoring an ambassadorship. U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, a Democrat, testified that he never took the pitch from Fattah too seriously, even though Fattah once bent the president's ear about it. Democrat Ed Rendell, a former mayor and governor, was called to defend Vederman, his former deputy mayor. He said Vederman was qualified for the job and accused prosecutors of cynically misreading the help he lent Fattah.
Vederman helped support Fattah's South African nanny and paid $18,000 for a Porsche owned by Fattah's TV anchor wife.
"The nanny, the Porsche and the Poconos, they weren't part of a bribery scheme," Fattah lawyer Samuel Silver argued in closings. "Those were all overreaches by the prosecution."
The campaign loan was just one of several schemes prosecutors outlined during the trial. They say Fattah was aided in his endeavors by current and former staffers who ran his district office or the nonprofits; by Vederman, who now lives in Palm Beach, Florida; and by political consultants Greg Naylor and Thomas Lindenfeld, who pleaded guilty.
The other co-defendants are Bonnie Bowser, of Philadelphia, who ran his district office; Karen Nicholas, of Williamstown, New Jersey, who ran the education nonprofit Fattah started; and Robert Brand, of Philadelphia, a businessman married to a former Fattah staffer. The jury on Tuesday came back with a mixed verdict for them.

Pennsylvania Police Investigate Gentleman Living With 12 Girls

Lee Kaplan, 51, fathered two babies with teen girl

[From article]
A 51-year-old Bucks County man was arrested after he was found living with 12 girls, including a teenager he considered his wife, and a baby and a toddler he fathered with her, authorities said Friday.
Lee Kaplan was arrested at his home in the 400 block of Old Street Road in Lower Southampton Township on Thursday morning after an anonymous tip led county child welfare workers and police to his door, said Lt. John Krimmel.
Some of the children were hiding in the small house.
"We kept finding more children," Krimmel said. "It's just a crazy situation."
The oldest girl, now 18, told police she was the mother of two of the girls, a 3-year-old and a 6-month-old, Krimmel said.

The teen's parents, Daniel and Savilla Stoltzfus, of Quarryville, Lancaster County, also were arrested after they told police they had "gifted" their daughter to Kaplan four years ago.
The girl was 14 at the time, and Daniel Stoltzfus gave her to Kaplan as thanks "for helping his family out of financial ruin," according to the criminal complaints.
The couple said they were the parents of all of the children except the two youngest, who were their grandchildren, said Bucks County District Attorney David Heckler.
Heckler said they were still investigating how the other nine children came to be living with Kaplan, and whether any of them may have been abused.
"We've got a ways to go to figure out what's really going on here," Heckler said.
Heckler described the Stoltzfuses as "straightforward." They told police they were going to lose their farm until Kaplan "comes along and gives them money somehow," possibly employing Daniel Stoltzfus in a scrap business.
Once their farm was saved, Daniel Stoltzfus, now 43, did some Internet research and concluded that it was legal to give their daughter to Kaplan, Heckler said.
Savilla Stoltzfus, 42, was at Kaplan's house when the child-welfare check was made, Heckler said.
The Stoltzfuses "think he's a wonderful man," Heckler said. Some of the also girls said good things about Kaplan, Heckler said, describing them as "brainwashed" by Kaplan.
Kaplan and the 18-year-old were not married, but Heckler said they acted as husband and wife.
The girls apparently did not attend school and it was unclear if they had ever been to a doctor, Heckler said. They did not appear to be in bad health and did not show visible signs of trauma, he said.
[. . .]
Police were unable to find birth certificates for any of the children and said they did not have Social Security numbers, he said.
Heckler said all of the children are in protective custody and are together.
Kaplan and the Stoltzfuses are each being held on $1 million bail.
Kaplan was charged with two counts of statutory sexual assault and related offenses. Daniel Stoltzfus was charged with criminal conspiracy and endangering the welfare of children. Savilla Stoltzfus was charged with endangering the welfare of children.
The Stoltzfuses were born into the Amish religion, but renounced it amid a years-long fight with community elders, according to a federal lawsuit they filed in 2009 against their former church. In the complaint, the Stoltzfuses said they had 11 children and had owned their family property on Pumping Station Road in Kirkwood, Lancaster County, since 1997. They operated a metal working business on the property. They suggested that sect leaders, among other things, frowned on them for doing business "with an individual of the Jewish faith named Lee Kaplan," the complaint says.
[. . .]
Jen Betz, a 37-year-old mother of two young children, said she was the neighbor who called a child-welfare hotline about Kaplan.
She called Bucks County Children and Youth on Wednesday because she was concerned about the girls - some 7 or 8, some in their young teens - she saw at his house, which she noticed had boarded windows and high weeds.

Philadelphia Woman Beaten, As Bystanders Watch

Shocking: A shocking video has emerged on social media of a woman in Philadelphia being beaten on a city street in broad daylight by a man as a crowd of people just stand by and watch.

[From article]
An alarming video of a woman being beaten on a city street while a crowd of people watches came to us by a Fresco News user. We immediately called police and tried to identify the victim and get answers about what happened.
It was a disturbing scene Thursday morning in 200 block of Ontario Street in the city's Kensington neighborhood. The man who shot the video of a brutal beating on the sidewalk does not want his face shown but did talk to us.
"The guy was actually on top of the girl-- just beating on her," the witness told FOX 29.
The woman is on the ground and you can see the man repeatedly slapping and punching the victim.
"I did hear a commotion earlier. I didn't pay no mind and then I came out and the guy was on top of the girl," the witness explained.
The witness who shot the video says the beating went on for sometime. He says maybe 20 to 30 minutes.
"Did anyone try to help the woman?," FOX 29 asked, "No one, just bystanders, smiling laughing. Just standing around like a normal day, like nothing was even happening," the witness said.
You can see from the video that no one tries to intervene or help the woman. People are on their cell phones and just watching her being beaten. We don't know if they were possibly afraid for their own safety. We do know someone on the block did call police.
"I didn't want to jump in and be a hero and just get hurt you know. I's bad out here," the man said.
[. . .]
According to police, they did find the victim who is being treated for her injuries.

Driverless Uber Vehicles On Streets of Pittsburgh, PA

[From article]
If you're looking forward to the day when an Uber whisks you across town without anyone behind the wheel, then good news: the ride-sharing company has shown off its first autonomous vehicle.
The car -- a Ford Fusion Hybrid -- has been shown taking to the streets of Pittsburgh. It's equipped with sensors, radars, laser scanners and high-resolution cameras, and is designed to gather mapping data as well as test its self-driving capabilities, Uber writes on its blog.
"When it's in self-driving mode, a trained driver will be in the driver's seat monitoring operations," the company explains. "Real-world testing is critical to our efforts to develop self-driving technology. We believe this technology will mean less congestion, more affordable and accessible transportation, and far fewer lives lost in car accidents."

Uber says it's still in the very early days of testing, so don't expect a driverless car pulling up at your door anytime soon. Somehow, the company managed to get this prototype out the door just in time to lay claim to being the first ride-sharing company to dabble in autonomy. Within the next year, Lyft plans to roll out autonomous electric Chevrolet Bolts, in an expansion of the partnership between the two companies.
Roadshow's own Tim Stevens thinks that this field is going to get even thicker, thanks to Apple. By investing $1 billion into China's home-brew Uber competitor, Didi Chuxing, it's possible that Apple isn't interested in creating cars that compete with traditional automakers. Instead, its foray into the auto industry could come as a sort of ride-sharing or car-sharing service, meant to compete with Uber and Lyft.

Second Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Resigns In Porn Email Scandal

FILE - In this Dec. 21, 2015, file photo, Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Michael Eakin arrives at the Northampton County courthouse in Easton, Pa. for a hearing about whether he should be suspended while a judicial ethics court decides if his email practices warrant discipline.
(AP Photo/Matt Rourke, File)

[From article]
A second Pennsylvania Supreme Court justice quit the bench Tuesday in a widening scandal over raunchy and otherwise offensive emails that he and others exchanged with friends and lawyers.
Justice Michael Eakin's decision to retire marks the latest fallout since embattled state Attorney General Kathleen Kane began releasing hundreds of emails in 2014 to the media and ethics agencies. Kane has since been indicted on perjury and other charges that she claims were trumped up because she took on the old boys' club of Pennsylvania's judiciary and law enforcement.
Eakin's lawyer, Bill Costopoulos, said at a news conference that an ethics trial on charges related to the emails, which had been scheduled to start in two weeks, would not proceed. He said Eakin would agree to the allegations, leaving "nothing left to try."
"This is the only process I know of in America where you can be charged with sending emails to friends that were inappropriate and face the death penalty," Costopoulos said. "I just don't think that's right."
Justice Seamus McCaffery, a Democrat, abruptly retired in 2014 after being suspended by the court for his role in swapping the emails.
The board that investigates accusations of judicial misconduct has said that Eakin sent or responded to emails that included a satirical video about a busload of "sluts" crashing, a joke about a woman told to keep "her mouth shut," and a joke about Tiger Woods that referred to his African-American and Asian background.
The email scandal, centered on the attorney general's office, has already led to dozens of people being disciplined or losing their jobs.
Eakin, 67, a Republican, has been on the state Supreme Court since 2002.
During tearful testimony in December, Eakin apologized for what he said he "allowed to happen," but he accused the news media of sensationalism and argued his job performance hadn't been affected.
"Perhaps my demeanor is one of the boys," Eakin said. "But what I sent was to people who were also one of the boys. It was in the locker room. I allowed, I created something that could be released."
The state constitution says judges lose their pensions if they act in a way that "brings the judicial office into disrepute," one of the allegations against Eakin. Costopoulos said he hoped that would not occur but it was not certain.
[. . .]
When Kane, a Democrat, turned over the new trove of emails in September, it was barely a week after Eakin voted with four other justices to suspend her law license.
[. . .]
Kane's license was suspended after prosecutors in suburban Philadelphia charged her with perjury and other offenses for allegedly leaking secret grand jury material and lying about it.
[. . .]
The exchange of explicit and pornographic emails by state prosecutors was uncovered as part of Kane's internal review of how the office handled the investigation into Jerry Sandusky, the former Penn State assistant football coach now serving a lengthy prison sentence after being convicted in 2012 of 45 counts of child sexual abuse.
[. . .]
Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf issued a statement calling the case "another reminder of why we must all work with urgency to restore the public's trust in their government as well as the integrity of the judicial system."

Philadelphia Gentleman Arrested After Allegedly Stabbing Three, Killing One

Ronald Stanley
Photo: Philadelphia Police

[From article]
Police say Stanley walked into a Cricket Wireless store on the 5500 block of Baltimore Avenue around 2 p.m. Tuesday and approached a 31-year-old man who was paying his bill at the counter. He then stabbed the 31-year-old in the chest, police said.
Stanley then left the store, climbed into the unlocked car of a 51-year-old man waiting outside and stabbed him in each hand, according to police. Stanley then got out of the vehicle and walked towards a 30-year-old man who was watching repairs on his car at a nearby auto mechanic shop, police said. He then allegedly stabbed that man in the chest as well before fleeing the scene.
[. . .]
Officials say witnesses directed responding officers to the area of 58th Street and Baltimore Avenue where they found Stanley. Police also say Stanley was in possession of the murder weapon at the time. They have not yet revealed his motive and said the attacks appear to have been completely random.
"They're clearly unprovoked attacks at this point," said Philadelphia Police Lieutenant John Walker. "We're not sure what the motivation is behind this male."

Three Dead On Pennsylvania Highway Due To Weather

Police told the Chicago Tribune that three people died in the crash and pictures from the scene showed injured people at the scene.

[From article]
At least three people have died after 'total whiteout' conditions and severe winds caused a huge 50-car pile-up on a highway in Pennsylvania.
The I-78 outside Harrisburg, in Lebanon County, was a scene of carnage this afternoon, with tankers, lorries and regular cars all involved in the massive crash.
Police told the Chicago Tribune that three people died in the crash and pictures from the scene showed bloodied people being stretchered towards air ambulances.
The smash came after snowstorm alerts were issued for the Philadelphia area, as well as swathes of the north east of the United States.
[. . .]
Dozens of vehicles collided as 30mph winds battered the road, which has since been shut down on both sides after the horror crash.
As well as the three dead, ore than 70 people had been taken to hospitals and another 70 were taken to a shelter set up at a fire station. At least three are in a critical condition.
The pile-up on Saturday morning came amid poor visibility, with roads packed with families getting away for the long weekend.
Ashley Fisher was driving on the I-78 with her two daughters when she was turned around by police.
'The snow just started and it was a total whiteout. The car in front of us just disappeared,' she told NBC News.
[. . .]
'We were able to stop, but a couple cars slid and hit the shoulder.'
She added that the whole westbound side of the highway was 'just a mess'.
'It just turned real white,' Raul Jardine told the Tribune.
He slowed down when visibility became so poor that he could only see brake lights ahead of him, causing his car to be rear-ended
The mayhem came as the north east was hit by an arctic blast freezing temperatures and biting windchill struck.
[. . .]
Temperatures plummeted to below zero in New York state as windchill made it feel as cold as -24F.
New York City itself was 19F as people woke this morning, but it felt more like 4F as a polar vortex began to sweep across the east of the United States.
Windchill will make it feel like it is -19F in Manhattan later on Saturday and Valentine's Day could be just as cold.
Mayor Bill be Blasio warned New Yorkers to take 'extreme precautions' today and on Sunday, which could see the coldest temperatures in a decade for much of the Northeast as forecasters warned of 'life-threatening' subzero conditions.
In Buffalo it was -1F, with a mammoth windchill making it feel 21 degrees colder. That temperatures was expected to drop another couple of degree this morning as flurries of snow came down.
A wind chill advisory was in effect for New York City beginning Saturday afternoon and continuing to noon Sunday, with the forecast predicting temperatures of 2F.
Wind chills are expected to drop 18F to 24F below across the region and wind gusts may reach 45mph.
But the Big Apple will have it easy compared to the likes Boston, with a low at 2 degrees below zero, and temperatures in Worcester, Massachusetts to drop as low as -11F.
[. . .]
Weather Channel Forecaster Michael Palmer said anyone who dares step outside Sunday morning will feel like they're 'walking into a freezer'.
'This will be the coldest air for more than a decade,' he told NBC News.
The National Weather Service warned that residents take precautions to protect themselves from frostbite or hypothermia conditions.
De Blasio told New York residents to heed cold-weather warnings, adding that city workers would also bring people living on the street to shelters or hospitals.
The anticipated temperatures were so cold the Central Park Conservancy decided to cancel the annual Central Park Ice Festival, meant to be held on Saturday.
It was the second time the weather dampened fun in Central Park.
Last month a free winter sports day called Winter Jam was canceled because of Storm Jonas.
Lighter winds and sunshine will greet the city on Sunday, but temperatures are still expected to be in the single digits, according to AccuWeather.
Meanwhile, a midwinter heat wave is smashing records in California.
Temperatures on the southern west coast rocketed into the 90s for the second consecutive day on Tuesday even as the warming Santa Ana winds that came in on Saturday began to fade.
Forecasters said strong high pressure will continue through the week, keeping afternoon temperatures well above normal until at least Valentine's Day on Sunday.

Three dead as 'total whiteout' causes fatal FIFTY-car pile-up on Pennsylvania highway and polar vortex sweeps across the north east, bringing record-breaking low temperatures
More than 50 cars were involved in a fatal crash on Pennsylvania's I-78, with at least 70 people taken to hospital
Police said three people died in the horror smash which came amid a 'total whiteout' on Saturday morning

Biting wind chill meant it felt like an icy 4F in Manhattan, while in Buffalo it was -1F, with wind chill making it feel up to 23 degrees colder

Severed Woman's Head Found In Western PA Woods

[From article]
Investigators in Pennsylvania said on Monday that red balls had been placed in the eye sockets of a woman’s embalmed head found a year ago in a case that may be linked to a growing black market for body parts.
Economy Borough Police Chief Michael O’Brien at a news conference appealed to the public for help identifying the woman, whose head was discovered in the woods by a child
walking home in the rural town about 22 miles northwest of Pittsburgh on Dec. 12, 2014.[. . .]
she remains unidentified, police said. She was described as Caucasian and about age 50.
Beaver County District Attorney Anthony Berosh said an investigation is under way and it encompasses a range of possibilities.
“There’s a black market on body parts and that market is pretty extensive,” Berosh said.
O’Brien said the head was found too far off rural Mason Road to have ended up there accidentally and animals moving the head had been ruled out because the embalming fluid would have made it unappealing.
“It didn’t roll off a truck. It just didn’t happen that way,” Berosh said.
[. . .]
Toxicology reports indicate the woman had trace amounts of drugs used to treat cardiac distress in her system, suggesting she may have died from heart failure, O’Brien said.
New information from hair and tooth enamel indicates that in the seven months leading up to her death, she moved up to four times and possibly lived in southwestern Pennsylvania, central Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, northern West Virginia, northern Maryland or eastern New York, O’Brien said. Her last dental work was likely performed in the 1990s.

An Ivy League professor said that Ben Carson should win the "coon of the year" after the 2016 hopeful supported allowing Confederate flags at NASCAR events.
In a tweet sent out last Tuesday, University of Pennsylvania religious studies professor Anthea Butler, wrote "If only there was a 'coon of the year' award ..." when responding to Daily Beast editor-at-large Goldie Taylor's tweet containing a link to a Sports Illustrated article on the issue.
"Swastikas are a symbol of hate for some people too … and yet they still exist in our museums and places like that," Carson said during an event with Richard Petty in North Carolina last Monday. "If it's a majority of people in that area who want it to fly, I certainly wouldn't take it down."

Gang of Black Harrisburg, PA Youths Attack Two White Teens

The two white kids were brothers, a 16-year-old and 19-year-old. They were in town watching a fireworks show last Sunday and were walking to their car that evening when they were attacked by a gang of blacks spouting racial epithets.
[From article]
A pair of white teens were viciously attacked by a large group of black youths after a fireworks display at a Harrisburg, Pennsylvania festival on Sunday evening, authorities report. The beating capped off a weekend filled with violence after black teens rampaged through the area, destroying property and smashing car windows.
The white teens, brothers from nearby Newville, Pennsylvania, had driven in to Harrisburg to attend the Kipona festival and the attack occurred while were walking to their car after the evening’s fireworks display.
The victims were swarmed by a large group of African American teens near Third and Walnut streets on Sunday night.
Harrisburg Police Chief Thomas Carter admitted that the attack was racially motivated.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Chief Carter said that the two out of town white brothers were “minding their own business” when the large group attacked them, yelling racial epithets.
After noting that the victims were “very nice” and “well-mannered,” the Chief swore he would pursue the case.
[. . .]

One of the brothers, age 16, received a broken jaw and his older brother, age 19, was battered and bruised. The teens told police that the elder brother used his own body to cover his younger sibling to try and keep him as safe as possible from the blows rained down upon them.
After being beaten, the two were able to regain their feet and flee their attackers.
Chief Carter said that the attackers may have been part of a large gang of black teens that rampaged through the area over the weekend, destroying cars and businesses.
[. . .]
Last year Harrisburg figured in as number five among the ten most dangerous cities in Pennsylvania.

US Rep. Chaka Fattah (D-PA) Indicted On Racketeering Conspiracy, Misusing Campaign Funds, Bribery

Philadelphia Congressman Chaka Fattah, Indicted

U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah and four associates were indicted Wednesday on racketeering conspiracy charges stemming from several alleged schemes to misuse campaign funds and hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal grant money to further their political and financial interests.
The five schemes include accepting a $1 million illegal loan for Fattah's failed 2007 mayoral campaign from a "wealthy supporter" and then repaying some of it using "charitable and federal grant funds" that passed through a nonprofit founded and controlled by Fattah, U.S. Attorney Zane David Memeger said at a news conference.
[. . .]
The indictment also accuses Fattah, a Democrat who represents parts of Philadelphia and Montgomery County, of seeking a $15 million federal grant for a political consultant in order to help "extinguish" a $150,000 debt owed to the consultant.
It also contends that the Second District congressman accepted an $18,000 bribe payment in return for seeking an ambassadorship or appointment to the United States Trades Commission for a lobbyist.
[. . . ]
Fattah is also accused of misappropriating funds from his mayoral and congressional campaigns to repay a $23,000 student-loan debt for his son, Chaka "Chip" Fattah Jr.
[. . .]
Indicted Wednesday with Fattah were Bonnie Bowser, 59 of Philadelphia; Karen Nicholas, 57, of Williamstown, N.J., Herbert Vederman, 69, of Palm Beach, Florida, and Robert Brand, 69, of Philadelphia.
Bowser is Fattah's chief of staff in his district office, Nicholas is a former Fattah staffer, Vederman is a lobbyist who was a deputy mayor in the Rendell administration and Brand runs a technology company, Memeger said.

Thoughtful Gentleman Suspected of Seven Homicides in NJ and PA

Todd West, Suspected of Seven Homicides in NJ and PA

Here's another thoughtful gentleman who took time from his busy schedule to reportedly end the lives of seven people in adjoining states, NJ and PA. No one was watching him. No police, no Communists, no crime families, no Harvard University campus police, no building superintendents, no graduate students in psychology, and no FBI informants. But in genteel academic run Cambridge MA all of the above mentioned groups took turns over 45 years not just watching but also harassing  a now 70-year-old white man. They added relentless character assassination, humiliation, ridicule, insults, provocation among other crimes and torts, to indicate their dedication. More evidence of misguided priorities in the United States of America.

[From article]
West is charged with killing three people and wounding a fourth in Elizabeth in a matter of hours between June 25 and June 26.
He’s charged in the May fatal shooting of his cousin.
West and two others are being held after they were charged with killing a man and a woman in Allentown, Pennsylvania, on Sunday. They’re also accused of killing a person in Easton, Pennsylvania, 45 minutes earlier.
The prosecutor says the same handgun was used in all the shootings.

Pennsylvania Woman,34, Kidnapped When She was Nine, Seeks Her Abductor

Ms. Heller also shared an artist's sketch of the suspect in her attempt to get to the bottom of her kidnap

[From article]
A woman who was kidnapped as a child is determined to hunt down her abductor 30 years later after a police investigation reached a dead end.
Kelly Heller was nine years old when she was snatched on May 31, 1981 in Upper Saucon Township, Pennsylvania.
Ms Heller, 43, told NBC that she had been stuffing newspapers to be delivered by her brothers when one brother came to tell her than a man outside their home was running a contest for the paper and wanted to speak to her.
She ran outside and got into the man's car who then quickly drove off. He first told her they were going to a park and then to play hide and seek.
She told NBC: 'He grabbed me down below and he told me to take my clothes off and I said no.'
The man put her in a headlock and punched her several times in the face before abandoning her in a field.
She went to the nearest home for help where the neighbor called the police.
Despite a full police investigation and plenty of press attention at the time, no one was ever arrested for the kidnapping.
Now, 34 years later, Ms Heller has decided to try to solve her own case.
She said that she remembered being interviewed, aged nine, following her ordeal but that no one ever contacted her again.
She has tried to get documents from the Bethlehem police department but information was redacted.
She now hopes her social media campaign on Facebook will generate more leads and finally solve the crime.
Ms Heller posted on the page: 'Thank you all so much. I am overwhelmed by your support. I am almost in tears here. Help my voice be heard & continue to share my story!! I won't be anybody's victim anymore!!'
According to Ms Heller's post detailing the kidnapping: 'This was not random. I was targeted. My kidnapper knew our names. If anybody has any information or can help in any way please let me know. I just need closure.'
Bethlehem police said the investigation is ongoing.

Grand Jury Recommends Indicting Pennsylvania Attorney General

Attorney General Kathleen Kane recites the Pledge of Allegiance while attending the state House of Representatives' swearing-in in Harrisburg on Tuesday, January 6, 2015.

[From article]
The special prosecutor and grand jury investigating allegations that Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane leaked secret information to a newspaper have found evidence of wrongdoing and recommended that she be criminally charged, according to numerous people familiar with the decision.
The panel concluded that Kane violated grand-jury secrecy rules by leaking investigative material in a bid to embarrass political enemies, sources said.
Some of those familiar with the grand jury presentment say it recommended charges that included perjury and contempt of court.
The statewide grand jury, sitting in Norristown, has turned over its findings to Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman, who must decide whether to affirm its findings and arrest Kane, the state's top law enforcement official.
[. . .]
Kane has acknowledged that she knew some material from her office was given to the newspaper, but said the material she approved for release was not grand jury information. Her allies have suggested that her staff may have erred by providing additional prohibited information without her knowledge.
