New Yorkers can soon fly on a budget.
Starting in November, Allegiant air will be selling one-way flights from Newark, NJ, to Cincinnati; Knoxville, Tenn.; Savannah, Ga.; and Asheville, NC, for as low as $39. Meanwhile, Wow airlines is offering one-way trips from Newark to Iceland starting at $99, and to London, Paris, Berlin and Frankfurt, Germany, for $149.
Although Allegiant travels to 117 domestic cities, only those four nonstop routes will be available from Newark at the start.
“We think we provide something really unique. At Newark, we’ll be the first,” Lukas Johnson, Allegiant’s vice president of planning, told USA Today. He’s referring to the “ultra low-cost carrier” budget airlines like Spirit and Frontier, which fly out of La Guardia Airport.
Though like those other carriers, budget airline customers should be prepared to pay for extras like carry-on luggage and assigned seats.
If you pay with a credit card, for example, you’ll get an $8 surcharge. Many budget carriers maintain their low cost by flying into smaller regional airports with lower landing fees — like Ogdensburg, NY.

Cops arrested two people Friday in thekilling of a New Jersey Institute of Technology student during a burglary at his fraternity house.
Nafee Cotman, 18, and Taquan Harris, 22, were taken into custody and charged with the murder of Joseph Micalizzi, 23, who was fatally shot early Monday.
Cops said Friday that Irvington resident Cotman was accompanied by 22-year-old Taquan Harris, of Newark, when they broke into the back door of Micalizzi’s frat house and shot him twice.
In addition to murder, both men face robbery, burglary and weapons charges.

Micalizzi was a mechanical engineering major at the time of his death and his good grades landed him on the dean’s list last fall.
He had been living in the Tau Kappa Epsilon house, which is situated across the street from the Rutgers-Newark campus — near where a student was murdered in a double shooting last month.

Yet there is a dark side to this trend. For behind it lies the sanctimonious hypocrisy of billionaires who build vast fortunes with firms that avoid the taxes paid by the rest of society, then arrogantly think they are best placed to solve the planet’s problems.
Zuckerberg talked in his letter of creating stronger communities. Yet Facebook, like too many technology behemoths, is a serial tax avoider undermining government through its stubborn refusal to pay its fair share to society.
Last year, this all-conquering social media firm handed over just £4,327 in corporation tax in this country: less than the annual sum paid in tax by the average worker.
Yet its staff in Britain took home an average £210,000 each in pay and bonuses, safe in the security of a society that relies on public servants to protect them from terror, provide health care in hospitals and repair the roads on which they travel to work.
The Facebook founder has hailed Bill Gates as his hero — the world’s richest man, who has been revered as something close to a secular saint after promising to give away the bulk of his £57 billion fortune.

Microsoft was accused of avoiding paying £3 billion annually in tax by shifting earnings around between low-tax nations. In Britain alone, it reported £1.7 billion revenues in one year for online sales of software, on which it paid no corporation tax. Zilch.
Gates even has the gall to tour the world telling governments to take more and more money from taxpayers for his beloved foreign aid programmes, once even branding those who oppose such policies as ‘evil’.

In one radio interview, Gates spoke of how philanthropists of the past such as the oil giant John D. Rockefeller offered a model for him and his generation of billionaires.
It was an interesting comparison, since Rockefeller, a ruthless monopolist, became the world’s richest man by using controversial practices such as collusion with railroad companies to crush his oil industry rivals — and then gave away $500 million to good causes.

are among the most notorious examples of cut-throat capitalists who stop at nothing to build their fortunes, then seek in later life to improve their public image with good deeds.

It is laudable to see the super-rich devote themselves to good works and give away big sums for the betterment of others.
Many of these people are technological visionaries, creating fortunes though their energetic entrepreneurship.
Yet too many of them seem to think it is acceptable for their companies to avoid paying taxes, in part because they see themselves as wonderful benefactors engaged in personal crusades to solve the world’s problems.
In effect, they are saying the super-rich have the right to ‘self-tax’ themselves by giving away money to pet causes, rather than the companies with which they made their fortunes paying their fair share of tax to governments, like the rest of us.
However much good they achieve, this is not just breathtakingly arrogant, but profoundly undemocratic. And for all their skills and smartness, they are often no better than governments at tackling problems in public services.
Zuckerberg went on Oprah Winfrey’s TV show five years ago to proclaim a $100 million gift to turn schools in the New Jersey town of Newark ‘into a symbol of educational excellence for the whole nation’.
The donation was doubled with matching funds from others. Yet his controversial scheme failed to meet its goals after blowing $20 million on consultants, and running into opposition from parents, teachers and community leaders.

The harsh truth is that the likes of Zuckerberg and Gates may be philanthropists, but they built those fortunes off the back of companies engaged in massive tax avoidance.
Such corporate strategy weakens society while placing heavier burdens on the rest of us.
It is all too easy in our globalised age for corporate giants to exploit tax loopholes and outwit inadequate politicians by paying the best advisers to shuffle paper profits around the planet.
So by all means praise a plutocrat such as Mr Zuckerberg for promising to give away extraordinary wealth. We must hope the money is put to good use to transform lives.
But at the same time, do not be deluded by the self- proclaimed altruism promoted so publicly by these titans of the technology revolution.

A mother-daughter duo flew into a rage at Newark Airport and attacked a Port Authority cop, authorities said Friday.

Nephatira Dansby, 24, of East Orange was blocking traffic at Terminal A as she picked up her mom, Katrina (Sunshine) Dansby, 42, at 5 p.m. Thursday, said PA spokesman Joe Pentangelo.
As the cop walked up to the driver’s side of Dansby's Chevrolet and knocked on the window, the young woman opened the door, striking the officer, Pentangelo said. Nephatira Dansby then got out of the car and allegedly punched the officer.
Katrina Dansby, who had been in New Orleans and was exiting the terminal at the time, joined in and held the cop as her daughter continued to land punches, officials said.

Massai Laboo, 22, and Lauren Whatley, 25, both of Irvington, are facing felony murder, robbery and weapons charges in the shooting death of 22-year-old Newark resident Ana Satian.

During the course of the robbery, Satian’s cell phone was stolen and she was shot, authorities said. Around 10:30 a.m. the following morning, she died from her injuries at University Hospital, authorities said.

The mother of two young children, Satian was born in Ecuador and moved to the United States when she was seven years old. She attended Newark Tech High School before becoming married and having children.
In a letter to her killers, the Rev. Luigi Zanotto of St. Lucy’s Church – where Satian was a member -- wrote, “You shot my heart. You inflicted a deep suffering for me.”
“You were thirsty for money and for few dollars you killed her. For few dollars you destroyed a life of a young woman, for few dollars you stole the mother of two wonderful children, and you left a husband lost and looking for an answer,” the letter reads.

The PortuCale Restaurant & Bar in Newark’s Ironbound section allegedly let customers cash hefty checks without requiring identification or filing currency transaction reports mandated by the feds, allowing the customers to hide income or get money for “under-the-table” payrolls.
Owner Abel Rodriguez — whose eatery boasts four stars on the web rating site Yelp — charged fees of up to 3 percent for the illegal service, which generated more than $9 million in profits over four years, according to acting New Jersey Attorney General John Hoffman.

The film’s subtitle asks, “Want Inner City Schools to Finally Succeed?” If only it were as easy as merely wanting it. New Jersey, often with prodding from its courts, has spent staggering sums trying to fix Newark’s schools. Currently, the district’s graduation rate languishes at just 22 percent, despite spending about $25,000 per pupil. Much of that money has been wasted. Institutional inertia, slavish adherence to fashionable pedagogies that have never proved effective, and the power of special-interest groups, like teachers’ unions, have all blocked meaningful change. The kind of radical transformation that St. Benedict’s represents, with its 1,500-year-old guidepost, is hard to imagine except in the most extraordinary circumstances.

Scholars often point out that St. Benedict fashioned his precepts for community living based on that most basic of human institutions, the family. In Newark, the stable family has become increasingly rare. Only 30 percent of the city’s kids live in two-parent families. Some 60 percent live without fathers, raised instead by mothers or grandparents or in foster homes. That is perhaps one reason why St. Benedict’s doesn’t define its success solely in terms of academic achievement.

“How do I measure success?” he asks. “You’re able to graduate St. Benedict’s, have a mortgage, deal with your marriage, deal with your family, stick it out. How do I measure success? I got a father working with his son, in his son’s life.”

Two Students Murdered By Gang of Four Teens in Newark NJ

Tevlin was reportedly shot dead June 25 in his SUV after being robbed of several items. He graduated from a local prep school with straight-A's and was attending Richmond University. His sophomore year was due to start later this month, according to NJ.com.
Williams reportedly stayed behind the wheel of a getaway car while Villagran and Brown had a conversation with Tevlin before firing eight bullets into him, authorities said.
'He was, at this time, a simple victim of an intent to rob,' Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray said at a Monday press conference.
Brown is also wanted in the double murder of two gay men in Seattle, according to police. The registered sex offender was arrested July 18, and a gun found in the makeshift tent where he lived was linked to all three murders, said Murray.

Bond was gunned down June 29 by Fields after two other men demanded her iPhone, according to the site. She graduated from Malcolm X Shabazz High School in Newark only days before her death.
She was shot in the head, a friend of hers was also shot but survived, according to police. A second suspect is still at large, but Fields was linked to the murder.
She planned to study nursing at Union County Community College, family told NJ.com. Her classes would have started next month.
The arrests came just over one month after about 1,000 people attended Tevlin's funeral.

How can any government allow business interests to use alleged disability to take a person's freedom from them?
