Terrorists Attack Ataturk Airport, Istanbul, Turkey 28-50 Reported Dead, Scores Injured

-- At least 28 people have been killed and 60 wounded in a terror attack on Istanbul Ataturk Airport in Turkey, Istanbul Gov. Vasip Sahin said early Wednesday. Three bombers were also killed, the governor said. Another report, from semi-official news agency Anadolu, said six of the wounded are in critical condition. A total of 49 ambulances were sent to the site.

-- The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has put in place a ground stop for any U.S. flights that were scheduled to fly to Istanbul and any flights leaving Istanbul for the United States, CNN's Rene Marsh reports.
-- The Ataturk airport is closed until Wednesday at 8 p.m. local time (noon ET), according to airport spokesman Erhan Ustundag. Incoming flights were diverted to Izmir, Ankara and other cities.
-- The U.S. embassy in Ankara is sending consular officers to the airport to account for any potential U.S. victims. But there are no indications of any American casualties at this point, a senior State Department official told CNN's Elise Labott.
-- The attacks happened on a warm summer night at the airport, east of Istanbul, that is the 11th busiest in the world in terms of passenger traffic. Two loud explosions reportedly shook the building sending terrified passengers fleeing for their lives shortly after 8am local time.
Shots were fired and words in Arabic shouted before the blasts were heard near the American Airlines check-in desk in the departure hall, a Belgian news agency reported.
The airport is said to be on "lock down" with all flights cancelled and rail traffic towards the Belgian airport suspended

An explosion has reportedly been heard at a Metro station in Brussels.
It comes after two blasts at the airport in the Belgian capital shortly after 8am local time this morning.
A picture has been shared on Twitter that appears to show smoke emerging from a station in the city.
The station is close to the EU institutions.

Surveillance video that investigators believe captured the handoff of an explosive-wired laptop that blew a hole in the side of a Somali jetliner could prove the bombing was an inside job, sources told Fox News.
The explosion on board Daallo Airlines Airbus A321 at 11,000 feet Tuesday killed the suspected bomber, who was sucked out of the plane, and forced an emergency landing.
A source close to the investigation showed Fox News the security video from Mogadishu’s airport, which shows two men, one an airport worker in an official reflective vest, passing the laptop to the bombing suspect in the airport terminal after he passed through a security checkpoint and shortly before he boarded.
The source said investigators, including several from the FBI brought in at the Somali government’s invitation, believe they have identified that all three men. They are believed to be from Hargeisa, in the disaffected area of Somaliland, which has been contesting sovereignty with the Somali government. That is a departure from initial suspicions that the bombing was carried out by the Al Qaeda-linked Islamist terror group Al Shabaab.
In the security video, an airport worker in a branded vest and a man casually dressed in white shirt and trousers, are first seen walking from the top to the bottom of the picture, along a walkway to the side of one of the airport’s open departure lounges. The man in the white shirt can be seen carrying a small laptop. Passengers can be seen waiting for their flights. This whole area is known as ‘airside’ – accessible only to passengers and airport staff who have gone through comprehensive security checks, including X-ray machines.

This is the extraordinary CCTV footage of the suspected bomber of a Somali plane at the exact moment when he is being handed a laptop in which the explosives were concealed.
The video, released by Somali intelligence officials, shows a passenger being given a laptop by two other men, one of whom is wearing a security jacket, after he passed through security.
The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) believes the passenger is the suicide bomber who was blown from the Daallo Airlines jet creating a gaping hole in the fuselage and forcing the plane to make an emergency landing back at the Mogadishu airport.

It is believed the laptop-like device was the bomb that caused the explosion. The plane's pilot said that if the explosion happened when the aircraft was at a higher altitude it could have caused the jet to crash.
'There are investigations going on and about 15 people have been arrested so far in connection with the incident,' a Somali security official who asked not to be named told AFP.
'The initial investigation results indicate that the bomb was planted in a laptop and was carried by one of the passengers.

But on Saturday, following investigations by Somalia and international experts, Transport and Aviation Minister Ali Ahmed Jama blamed a bomb.
'Experts have confirmed the explosion that occurred inside the Daallo Airlines [jet] was not a technical problem but was a bomb that was intended to destroy the plane and kill all passengers onboard,' he said.
The man who was sucked out of the plane and plummeted to his death was believed to be a wheel chair bound suicide bomber identified as Abdulahi Abdisalam.

Mogadishu airport is heavily fortified and adjoins the capital's main base of the African Union mission to Somalia, the 22,000-strong force backing the government in the battle against Al-Qaeda-affiliated Shebab insurgents.
The insurgents have lost ground since being routed from Mogadishu in 2011 but continue to stage regular shooting and suicide attacks.
On Saturday, Somali soldiers backed by African Union troops recaptured the key port of Merka from the Shebab, just one day after the Islamists swept into the city, the army and residents said.

On Tuesday, the DHS quietly released online a “privacy impact assessment” that provides the legal justification for an ongoing experiment it is calling “Data Collection for the Centralized Hostile Intent Project.”
The 14-page document, reviewed in full by WND, reveals the DHS’s Science and Technology Directorate will conduct an exercise at the Providence airport at an undisclosed date.
The DHS is planning to collect video images at designated areas throughout the airport, including at TSA security checkpoints, ticket counters, baggage claim and the airport entrance. No audio will be recorded at any time, states the document.

The experiment, the paper makes clear, is focused on video collection of trained actors at designated airport areas. However, it concedes that the agency “may incidentally collect Personally Identifiable Information from members of the traveling public and airport personnel who may be near them.”
Besides testing to see if DHS agents can detect “hostile intent” from video images as opposed to in-person observation, the videos will also used to see if computers can successfully be integrated for automated hostile intent detection and tracking. DHS is developing algorithms for what it calls “person and object detection and tracking.”[. . .]
The DHS contends it has the legal right to record passengers, citing existing U.S. law dictating the mission of the TSA is to protect U.S. transportation systems to ensure freedom of movement for people and commerce.

In February 2013, the Sydney Morning Herald reported the Massachusetts-based multinational corporation Raytheon – the world’s fifth largest defense contractor – had developed a “Google for Spies” operation that can predict future behavior.
Herald reporter Ryan Gallagher wrote that Raytheon had “secretly developed software capable of tracking people’s movements and predicting future behavior by mining data from social networking websites” like Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare.

more than 270 badges went missing at the San Diego International Airport in the last two years and more than 1,400 badges missing from Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
Many of the missing badges were not reported for weeks or months in hopes they would be turned it - meaning they were not quickly deactivated.
The information comes following an investigation by a local NBC affiliate in Dallas, TX. They also found reports of missing crew and pilot uniforms.
The TSA is downplaying the report, saying most of the badges require a PIN or hand print in addition to swiping a badge. Experts warn it does not prevent someone from gaining access to the tarmac or other areas and many are calling it an astonishing breach of security that could leave the doors wide open to terrorists.

As the cop walked up to the driver’s side of Dansby's Chevrolet and knocked on the window, the young woman opened the door, striking the officer, Pentangelo said. Nephatira Dansby then got out of the car and allegedly punched the officer.
Katrina Dansby, who had been in New Orleans and was exiting the terminal at the time, joined in and held the cop as her daughter continued to land punches, officials said.

The man had multiple knives on him and suspicious items in his car that led to a bomb squad investigation, Columbus police Sgt. Rich Weiner said. The man was identified only as a Columbus-area resident in his early 40s pending notification of his relatives.
After the first shots were fired, the man got up and headed back toward the terminal, at which point a second airport officer shot him, Weiner said. It was unclear whether he was shot by both officers. He was shot multiple times, Weiner said.
Police are investigating the man’s background and why he was using a fake ID to buy a ticket. He tried at one point to use a woman’s ID, Weiner said.

Airline Employee Charged With Smuggling Guns Onto Planes

In a Federal Bureau of Investigation affidavit obtained only by Channel 2 Action News, we learned that agents believe a current employee working in Atlanta helped another man smuggle the guns onto a flight.
The affidavit names Eugene Harvey, a bag handler, as the suspected smuggler who was a Delta employee.



The flight originated from Hartsfield Jackson International Airport and went into New York’s JFK airport on Dec. 10, the complaint states.
According to the complaint, the former Delta employee was using a "buddy pass" and he worked in collaboration with a current delta employee.

The items were taken from travelers’ checked luggage between March 2012 and June 2014, Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown said Wednesday.
“The defendants have been caught red handed and will now face the consequences of their alleged illegal acts,” said Brown.
“The defendants — who were hired to handle the baggage of those traveling in and out of Kennedy Airport — are alleged to have stolen computers, cell phones and other items from checked luggage with many of them selling the pilfered items to a pawn shop or to a ‘fence’ who was actually an undercover police officer,” Brown said.

The baggage handlers who were arrested were all working for subcontractors for airlines at JFK.

Police said the alleged thieves even fenced or sold the items on airport grounds, telling buyers there was plenty more where that came from.
The only trouble for them was that the buyers were undercover police officers.
Authorities said baggage thefts are now rampant, and anyone who puts their valuables in checked bags may never see them again.

A woman fitted with a pacemaker has died after passing through an airport scanner in the southern Russian town of Ulan-Ude.

Diana Tolstova, 30, died in the airport minutes after passing through the scanner. Her husband Maxim, 33, said that they had provided papers proving that Mrs Tolstova was fitted with the heart device – which is adversely affected by airport scanners.

"I don’t know what happened but she went through it anyway," he told Central European News agency.

"When we got to the departure gate she began to feel dizzy and suddenly collapsed.

"Security and airport personnel are given strict instructions about how to handle people with pacemakers, and we warn them never to let a wearer go through a metal detector," an airport spokesman said.
"In normal circumstances, they see their papers and let them pass. In this case, the patient seems to either have forgotten about it, didn’t know or became confused by the airport security arrangements.

A doctor checked in at Atlanta airport in protective goggles, gloves, boots and overalls in a bitter protest at the CDC for 'sugar-coating' the true scale of Ebola in the US.
Gil Mobley said he was left horrified yesterday when he was allowed to fly from Guatemala to Atlanta with no interrogation or checks on his equipment.
Enraged, the microbiologist and emergency trauma physician boarded his next flight from Atlanta International Airport - minutes from the center's headquarters - wearing a protective white jumpsuit branded with the words 'CDC is lying!'

Muslim Terrorists in Libya Control Jetliners at Airport

Intelligence reports of the stolen jetliners were distributed within the U.S. government over the past two weeks and included a warning that one or more of the aircraft could be used in an attack later this month on the date marking the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against New York and Washington, said U.S. officials familiar with the reports.
“There are a number of commercial airliners in Libya that are missing,” said one official. “We found out on September 11 what can happen with hijacked planes.”

Meanwhile, officials said Egyptian military forces appear to be preparing to intervene in Libya to prevent the country from becoming a failed state run by terrorists, many with ties to al Qaeda.
Libya remains an oil-rich state and if the country is taken over completely by Islamist extremists, U.S. counterterrorism officials believe it will become another terrorist safe haven in the region.

A New Jersey man faces tens of thousands of dollars in fines after regulators say he interfered with a satellite system at one of the nation's busiest airports while masking his whereabouts from his employer.
The Federal Communications Commission said Gary Bojczak admitted he installed a jamming device in his company-owned pickup to thwart his employer's GPS.

Here's one more example oF technology available to government officials and to criminals. It is mostly unknown to law abiding civilians. High tech devices are used to harass ordinary citizens. When they complain local police and the FBI treat the victims as if they are insane, because the police use the same for their own extra legal purposes. Government researchers do not reveal when they test such weaponry on the civilian populations. Again complaints about abuse are treated as fantasy.

Misguided Policies Rule

Griffin says, "To me, providing for people over 75 shows the executive branch of government acting wisely. It involves recognizing that elders are not at all likely to carry explosives in their shoes. Hardly anyone that age is about to become a terrorist, a fact the Transportation Security Agency now accepts. Common sense has prevailed." (Richard Griffin, COLUMN: "Seniors welcome change in airport security," Cambridge Chronicle, Mar 31, 2013) The tip of the iceberg of government nonsense.

Inconveniencing millions of airline passengers shows how completely government lacks common sense. Griffin's argument is not rational. What is the connection between not requiring 75-year-olds to remove their shoes for airports searches,  to a ban on "assault weapons?" He doesn't even define assault weapons. Are there assault knives? Assault pillows? 

Common sense public safety priorities demonstrate having more weapons among the population is an essential element in reducing violent crime. See, e.g., More Guns, Less Crime, by John Lott. Adding barriers to legal gun possession is a deterrent to public safety. Griffin argues nonsense in public policy regarding guns, as equal to a minor reduction in mindless rules of misguided TSA officials.  

The US House Speaker said, "We have to pass the health care law to find out what is in it." Was that common sense? The criminals in Congress no longer read the laws they vote for. They leave details to untrained unelected bureaucrats. Driving legislation by fear rather than reason leads to more nonsensical regulations. Having a talented speech maker as President with no ability to govern promotes misguided policies like Griffin's gun bans.
