Americans Lack Problem Solving Skills, War On Poverty Continues

The Wall Street Journal has an article titled “Americans Rank Last in Problem-Solving With Technology,” with very bad news for the economy.
The results build off a global survey conducted in 2012 by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. To better compare the skills of younger and older adults and the unemployed, researchers did additional surveys in 2014. The countries that scored the highest on the problem-solving with technology criteria were Japan, Finland, Sweden and Norway. Poland scored second to last, just above the U.S.
One stark revelation is that about four-fifths of unemployed Americans cannot figure out a rudimentary problem in which they have to spot an error when data is transferred from a two-column spreadsheet to a bar graph. And Americans are far less adept at dealing with numbers than the average of their global peers.
“This is the only country in the world where it’s okay to say ‘I’m not good at math,’ ” said Mr. Provasnik. “That’s just not acceptable in a place like Japan.”
Perhaps a key cause of the problem is the kind of free-spending, vote-buying Democrats who do not want to have to deal with the fiscal realities and therefore encourage innumeracy in our public schools. The kind of politicians who might say, “What difference, at this point, does it make?” or who promise “free” college tuition to everyone. What good is a free college education if the “graduates” can’t do simple math and therefore can’t get a paying job?

Hehe. Logical argument. But liberals, progressives, do not think logically. They speak propaganda, appealing to emotions. Logical arguments and critical thought can never counter emotional beliefs. It is easier to open a rock than a mind.

Why are most engineers politically conservative? The answer is that engineers fail most of the time. In engineering there is a cycle of design, test, test failure, diagnosis, and redesign, until a product is perfected. Failure is the natural state of engineering new devices. Through their repeated failures, competent engineers are forced to become rigorously honest and functionally conservative.
This honesty is notably lacking in the ungrounded wishful thinking of the political left. The great failure of liberals is that they never fail (according to them).

There are three classes of top-down social engineering. Government programs to restructure society is one class. Government laws, regulatory mandates, and court orders to change behavior is a second. The third is liberal social pressure, often with government complicity, to control thought. We call this third method “political correctness.”

And yet, the left has the arrogance to assume that a master planner can engineer a social system that best for all the people -- a “one size fits all” program. Unfortunately, most political Democrats, and many establishment Republicans as well, have been seduced by a lifetime of pro-government experience into believing that top-down, big-government programs are the answer to all ills. It is vanity to think that they are specially chosen to steer everyone’s life.

Of the seven deadly sins, theologians say the most deadly of all was Vanity. The Greeks called it Hubris. We call it Arrogance. All the other deadly sins derived from Vanity. This sin is really at the heart of progressive, or liberal, social engineering programs. One can do no wrong if one’s heart is in the right place -- so liberals believe.
Our Founding Fathers thought otherwise. They realized that no person, or selected group, could anticipate all circumstances. They therefore created a Constitution that allowed for local adaptation within a protective framework -- a framework that inhibits vanity by enlisting contending interests in making the most important decisions.
The American Constitution was designed for a society whereby people manage their own affairs and solve their own problems. Beyond promoting trade among the states, protecting against foreign invasion, and ensuring the rights of property, the Federal Government really has no legitimate role in structuring society. Society was intended to evolve social arrangements on its own within the protective framework of the Constitution. Thus, this progressive idea that government has the right to impose social change is contrary both to the spirit and to the words of the Constitution.

ObamaCare is the contemporary classic. But, what we have not yet seen is all the damage that ObamaCare has in store. Examples of programs where we do see the wreckage are those “Great Society” antipoverty programs initiated by President Johnson. Enough time has passed to validate the early warnings. Senator Daniel Moynihan warned, all the way back in 1965, that liberal poverty policy was leading to disaster: the breakup of families, crime, drug use, wasted lives and all the other horrid consequences that have followed. The liberal community did not listen and, today, we are stuck with the predicted social disaster.

No sooner had the president charged that those who claimed the economy is in trouble were “peddling fiction” than U.S. stocks posted their worst ten-day start to a year in history. Walmart announced it was closing 154 stores in the U.S. putting 10,000 U.S. jobs on the block. [. . .] Macy’s announced it was closing 36 stores and 27 Kmart and Sears stores were also to be shuttered. [. . .] Consumers simply are running out of money to buy things.
To be sure, the global economy is shaky right now.[. . .] the global recession looks to be more severe than the last one.
1.[. . .] a lot of municipalities and states are already a lot more stressed than they were in 08 and U.S. gov[ernment] debt is much higher.

4. Policy makers and central bankers seem even more clueless than ever after having embarked on an even larger worldwide binge to cure the hangover, [. . .] from their last binge.

Amid all the factors behind the tailspin of our and the world’s economies it is obvious that the grand progressive schemes based -- as they certainly are -- on ignoring reality play a critical part. [. . .] Walmart, [. . .] responding to demands to raise the minimum wage, [. . .] raised wages above the minimum. Critics of raising the minimum wage argued that that would raise prices, negatively affect sales and reduce employment rolls. It seems that it did.
In economic terms, we are in the worst possible situation: politicians and bureaucrats with no respect for reality support programs which depend on an ever increasing supply of other peoples’ money at a time when there isn’t such money to be had [. . .]
Reason sets out the dilemma succinctly:
Sanders has built his popularity almost exclusively on promises to spend more money [. . .] Sanders hasn't been specific about where the money would come from, [. . .] his plans require massive tax hikes not just on the rich but on the middle class, meaning his efforts at offering everyone an education could not only increase inequality [. . .] but also actually redistribute wealth upward.

Puerto Rico is this week’s U.S. basket case with $70 billion in debt for which they have no means of repaying. Other states with unfunded enormous pension liabilities look to be lining up behind Puerto Rico [. . .] On a national scale, People (sic) who could add warned that ObamaCare would collapse with expenditures quickly exceeding revenue, and there’s no doubt that the death spiral is well underway.
This week Humana joined the list of insurers reporting big problems with Obamacare. PJ Media’s Stephen Green Commented:
As for the ObamaCare!!! cheaters -- well, it's not like the Democrats who authored this law weren't given plenty of warnings about the perverse incentives.
The net result is that more and more insurers can't afford to sell insurance to ObamaCare!!! customers -- the very people the law was ostensibly designed to help:

"'We expect Humana will exit Health Insurance Exchange marketplaces in 2017 in light of this data.'"
This thing is coming off the rails, and a LOT of people are going to get crushed when it does.
Mere glitches to the innumerate progressives. I don’t know what they are up to where you live, but in Washington D.C. they are proposing a massive new paid 16-week family leave program which it is estimated could cost over $700 million a year. [. . .] In any event, it is most likely that if this passes, employers will hire fewer people and pay them less to compensate for the cost. Once again the bottom of the economic pyramid would bear the burden of the virtue signaling of those at the top.

Walmart officials were more frank about the reasons the company was downsizing. He said the company cited the District’s rising minimum wage, now at $11.50 an hour and possibly going to $15 an hour if a proposed ballot measure is successful in November.

Math is so hard for progressives. I expect any day now some Democrat in Congress will introduce a bill repealing it.

Once my husband and I rounded the wrong bend in the middle of Montana and, being as far from civilization as one can get in the lower 48,

America is now living through such a lost period in our history, and it’s high time we thought about where things went wrong. In my Montana wanderings there were several factors involved; we’d neglected to bring the charger for the GPS, had consulted the wrong map, and had failed to pay attention when the road veered gradually to the left. The same is true for our national journey.
As with most errors this one started with bad thinking; we’ve made two huge philosophical mistakes, one an outgrowth of the other, and they may cost us everything: 1) we have been lazy and wimpy on the issue of truth and, as a result, 2) we have bought the lie that human nature is basically good.
Let’s look first at the issue of truth. I say we wimped out because it is much easier, at least for a while, to whitewash all controversies and claim that truth is so flexible that it can take any shape we want it to. If we assume that truth is merely a human construct, we can claim that it comes in thousands of differing colors and sizes, tailor made to fit any need. Thus we avoid having to discern differences, make moral judgments, or stand up for anything. We can act superior to those who still see vast chasms between belief systems and we claim “open-mindedness” utterly unaware of the meaninglessness of that term.
If nothing is really true, then there’s no reason to knuckle down and learn anything, no reason to think very hard, no reason to amass facts –- we suspect they’re not true anyway. I am dumbfounded by the ignorant assertion that Muslims and Christians worship the same god. A person doesn’t have to know, can’t know, anything much about either belief and make that statement. In an untruthful world ignorance is not only bliss, it is the inescapable condition.

You see, if one decides against absolute truth, one decides against logic; it is, after all, a self-refuting logical impossibility to say, “There is no such thing as absolute truth.” And what happens when a society decides to ignore the nonsense factor and base its “thinking” on such a floppy foundation? Insanity is what happens.
We have a society in which one can scream about a “war on women” but support passionately a group that excels at subordinating, torturing, mutilating, raping, and terrifying its women from their childhood. We have a society that has frozen in the face of an enemy so horrifying that we can’t even work up the courage to publicly condemn them, let alone commit to war. We have a society that has no moral boundaries, other than avoiding offending another person’s sensibilities. We have no problem with killing inconvenient babies in spite of its genocidal results, no problem with sexual promiscuity regardless of the physical disease and family turmoil that causes, and worst of all, we no longer expect our leadership to be truthful people of integrity.
As the Clinton campaign drags itself forward I am amazed at the number of her supporters – both public figures and private acquaintances of mine -- who are content to make excuses for her habitual, pathological duplicity.

Sooner or later reality will come crashing through the door and it will have to be dealt with. That’s where we are right now. Grendel is splintering the gates and we can no longer just pass the joint, sing loudly and pretend he’s not out there. He is.
Because we have treated reality like a do-it-yourself kit, we’ve arrived at a second philosophical no-man’s land; we’ve decided that, despite all evidence to the contrary, humanity is basically good. [. . .]
If we are basically born good, then childrearing becomes nothing more than keeping the child alive until he can fend for himself, never mind the fact that such parental neglect has created at least two generations of self-centered, amoral monsters. We are not naturally good. We can be good, but we don’t start that way. What baby has ever given a rip that his mother hasn’t had a full night’s sleep since he was born? What two-year-old goes sweetly off to her nap because she knows mommy needs some quiet time? Children need to be taught, sternly and consistently, to put others first.
If our children aren’t trained out of their natural tendencies we end up with mobs of teenagers terrorizing mall shoppers, having sex at school (sometimes with the teacher, because that generation doesn’t know any better either), and destroying any learning that might be able to happen in a classroom.

How can we process the knowledge that some of our fellow human beings are quite at ease with the idea of raping babies, beheading fellow countrymen, burning people alive? How do we explain that?
We try to blame such behavior on poverty, on racism (which also needs explaining), on society in general, which is a pretty rocky hypothesis since society is built of the crooked bricks of fallen, sinful individuals; it’s not a separate entity, but an outgrowth of all that is rotten in Denmark.
Human beings, unless trained to be decent, humble, and caring, have in our very DNA the capacity to think and commit evil –- absolute evil. Each generation comes face-to-face with that fact. All of human history has been a trail of tears –- not because the rich have too much, or because our parents didn’t love us enough, or because some stranger didn’t approve of us. We hurt each other because something in us pushes us to do so. This is why humanity needed a Savior. Only with His sacrifice and His influence has the world crept slowly out of the toil and horror of life on this earth.
But if we deny truth (i.e. God) and continue looking past all the evidence of our flawed nature, the prosperity and progress of the last 2,000 years will be lost, is being lost. I pray consistently that enough of us will wake up and realize that there is an absolute mountain of truth out in front of us, and we’re about to crash headlong into it. truth is immutable; it isn’t going to move out of our way.

In the chapter entitled "The Arts of Selling" from 1958's Brave New World Revisited, Aldous Huxley wrote that "[t]he survival of democracy depends on the ability of large numbers of people to make realistic choices in the light of adequate information. A dictatorship, on the other hand, maintains itself by censoring or distorting the facts, and by appealing, not to reason, not to enlightened self-interest, but to passion and prejudice [.]" Which is why under the soft dictatorship of Barack Hussein Obama, the American people may be hard pressed to make realistic choices since they are far too susceptible to the distortions of language.

Ad hominem attacks against an individual instead of the merit of an idea have been a hallmark of this administration. In 2014 when attempting to persuade the country on his immigration policy, Obama utilized the ergo decedo fallacy by attacking Republicans for their party position rather than for their argument.
Logical fallacies have long been the lifeblood of dishonest politicians and in Obama, we find an abundance of them. A favorite fallacy is the strawman, which is an attack on a position that is not even held by the other side.

More currently, Americans who oppose the Iran nuclear deal are "crazies." Those Jewish groups who still cannot perceive the existential threat to America and Israel need to recall that Islamic Iran allows lying to unbelievers in order to defeat them. Taqiyya is saying something that isn't true while kitman is lying by omission. Thus, to advance Islam, one gains the "trust of non-believers in order to draw out their vulnerability and defeat them." Coupled with his use of logical fallacies and his schooling in Islam, Obama surely knows these tenets which is why he can blithely claim that Iran will be compliant.

The Jewish proverb that "a half-truth is a whole lie" surely describes Obama's moral stance.

If we cannot identify and comprehend the onslaught of logical fallacies being employed, then we ignore the real agenda which is that of "controlling, regulating, and taxing human activity."

Americans were told they could keep their doctors and that health insurance premiums would go down. Anyone daring to expose the manipulations became an object of scorn and humiliation, via ad hominem attacks. Yet the Obama White House knowingly mischaracterized the healthcare plan.

Obama is a pathological liar whether he engages in statistical fraud, i.e., the war on women, or claims in a 2007 speech that Congress did not assist New Orleans black residents during Hurricane Katrina.

He is a breathtaking hypocrite who projects his own worldview and claims his opponents are engaging in attacks, when, in fact, he is the one doing the attacking.

Logic Remains Foreign to Phoenix Editors

The Phoenix is not guilty of using logic to bash Dan Cathy, owner of Chick-fil-A corporation. They use standards which they usually oppose, e.g., guilt by association, and denial of freedom of beliefs. Cathy's religion is important because it controls what the corporation sells. Really? Editors state, "a backward-looking social philosophy is essentially incompatible with the forward-looking message inherent in the Freedom Trail?" Oh, is the Freedom Trail from the future? A false fact never gets in the way of an illogical argument.

The Phoenix does what they say the Catholic Mayor of Boston should not do. "The US Constitution is designed so that the personal does not become the political." His objections to Chick-fil-A is political. The editors and homosexuals join him. The corporation does not have a position on same sex marriage. If they discriminated based on sexual preference there would be a federal lawsuit, with Chris Matthews having leg tingles all day. Obama would issue an Executive Order denouncing Chick-fil-A. This is just character assassination of a corporation because of the religious beliefs of the owner. An outrageous assault on freedom of beliefs. Homosexuals call this hatred, and bigotry when someone else does it. The Phoenix employs guilt by association for Cathy, but not for the Mayor. Menino remains silent about the two assassinations on July 16, 2012 near Tufts Medical Center, but attacks a corporation which would bring jobs to the area. Does he think he is Obama? But there's more idiotic arguments. The Phoenix wonders why the corporation (with a "bird-size brain") wants to come to Boston. The same reason Stephen Mindich sells ads--to make money. Duh! Corporations have brains? If the population of Boston is totally, like, you know, opposed to Chick-fil-A's delights, why not encourage him to open a restaurant? The editors speak for the majority of people in Boston? How do they know what the majority thinks? Every year a large number of young people arrive in the Boston area. Do the editors speak for those who have not arrived yet too?

Same misguided priorities in Chicago, where 5,000 young people killed each other in gang violence since 2001. Yet the public spirited Mayor demonizes Chick-fil-A there too. Homosexuals are about 10 percent of the population of the United States. They dictate to the 90 percent how they should be allowed to spend their money. If homosexuals take control of the entire country there will be little free choice left for heterosexuals. No religions that homosexuals do not like. No restaurants owned by individuals homosexuals do not like. They are the best embodiment of forward thinking dictatorships of the minority. This editorial is about hatred and embarrassing anyone who disagrees with these homosexual totalitarians, the most intolerant group in the name of tolerance.

Illogical Essay

Equating McVeigh to thousands of Islamo-fascists is nonsense. How many "Israeli law student[s]" assassinated Americans and Palestinians? You cite Israeli on Israeli violence. More nonsense. Did Pat Robertson assassinate anyone? Words are not equal to acts. Hello! How many "Baptist minister[s] . . . orchestrated the murders of civil rights workers?" One? How many Catholics told murder victims to “Pray the rosary!” as he executed them? Is this more nonsense? Equating the President listening for 20 years to a minister who hates America to individual citizens is stupidity. Saying "all faiths have a lunatic fringe." may be true. But ignoring the thousands of Muslims who commit violent act on innocent people shows blindness deafness and selective input to your brain. You missed a valid historical argument used by some groups to brutalize people alive today. That is just irrational. Take a course in logic.

Included at this link are two video clips showing Obama contradicting himself. He is not a liar so how can he maintain an impossible contradiction in his own speeches? Should we believe him instead of our lying eyes and ears?

Emotions Rule Journalism?


Misguided priorities again. 90,000 Americans die each year due to medical negligence some as simple as doctors not washing their hands between patients. Why the focus on a negligible number of deaths by older drivers? Gelzinis never lets facts get in the way of his emotions. He tells us his father was a very careful driver. Then he says that older drivers need to have their licenses pulled. Huh? Why not test the bad drivers and and encourage the good drivers like his father? Poor or no logic in this column.
