Love Is Not All You Need For A Civil Society

[From article]
As an attorney who has dabbled in family law, and a former prosecutor, it often strikes me that this ditty doesn’t apply to a substantial chunk of people in the U.S. In fact, America as a nation doesn’t seem all that enamored with the idea of love anymore -- at least not the highest form of love, that which sustains marriage and families.
For those who might think otherwise, I’d suggest they look at the latest numbers regarding marriage and family. Both institutions remain in serious decline: The percentage of married households in the U.S. has now dipped to an all-time low. (2010 was the first year in our history that fewer than half of all households were married households.) And the rate of newly formed marriages has hovered near its all-time low for several years. America doesn’t seem to care much for children anymore, either. Our birth rate has also hovered near an all-time low for several years. Four out of every ten of those record-low births are out-of-wedlock -- and one in three children grows up in a household without a father.
[. . .]
And here’s the problem. We can’t have it both ways. Granted, many factors have contributed to the decline of marriage and family in the U.S, but one underlying factor is frequently overlooked: America’s obsession with pleasurable indulgence. Marriage and family will inevitably decline in a society of too many self-absorbed pleasure junkies, which is basically what we’ve become.
The selfless, sacrificial love that’s necessary to sustain marriage and families involves doing the difficult -- whether one feels like it or not: foregoing one’s self-interest for others; compromising with others; and putting children's interests ahead of one’s own. But pleasure junkies have conditioned themselves to do the opposite. They’re accustomed to doing the easy things (e.g. overeating, overspending, smoking, viewing pornography), and focusing on themselves, rather than doing difficult things for others or for a greater common good.
[. . .]
Unfortunately, our overindulgence in pleasure doesn’t stop at eating, drinking, and spending. Millions are battling substance abuse and/or alcoholism. Millions more struggle with smoking, gambling, hard and soft-core pornography, video games, prescription drugs, and other addictive products and behaviors.
Many people fail to connect the dots between our addiction to pleasure on the one hand, and the decline of American marriage and family on the other. But the connection is real. Commonsense tells us so. Before the No Pain, No Gain mantra seized the world of personal fitness, my folks used to counsel me with a similar adage: Little Effort, Little Results. The phrase was commonplace during my teen and young adulthood years, and it wasn't restricted to my school or work life. It applied to my personal life as well.
[. . .]
When it came to marriage and family, my parents thankfully didn’t preach much; instead they taught by example. I watched them do the difficult things necessary to make their marriage work.
[. . .]
Good parents know that raising children requires tremendous self-giving and sacrifice. There’s less sleep, flexibility, time, money, and energy to do just about everything a couple wants to do for themselves.
Indulgence in pleasure takes very little willpower. A lack of willpower to do what’s difficult, and focus on self, are hardly the habits one can afford to bring into long-term relationships, particularly marriage and family relations. Like eating a good diet, exercise, or saving money -- marriage and family involve persistent effort and sacrifice. Nowadays, large numbers of Americans seem ill-prepared to undergo this sacrifice and effort.
[. . .]
Many if not most of America’s ongoing ills can be tied to the decline of marriage and family: poverty, dependency, welfare, crime -- insolvency of Social Security and Medicare due to low birth rates. If Americans continue their attachment to doing the easy things for themselves, and don’t reclaim the mantle of effort and sacrifice for others in relationships, then marriage and family will continue to weaken, and that once great civilization, America, will continue to weaken along with them.

New Book, Fighting Depression Without Drugs

[From review]
Matt Haig, a British novelist, had a nervous breakdown at 24 and slipped into a suicidal depression. But when medications left him feeling even worse, he decided to battle against the disease on his own. Within a decade, he had climbed his way out of the depths, a harrowing journey he chronicles in his new book, “Reasons To Stay Alive”(Penguin Books, out now). The 40-year-old father of two tells The Post how he’s thriving despite mental illness.
[. . .]
There is something therapeutic about reading. For a story to be a story, it has to involve change to a character or a situation. When you are stuck in a situation or in that moment, just believing in change is nourishing. Even if it’s not good or positive, just the idea of it is positive.
[. . .]
I found the writing experience very therapeutic. Being published isn’t always good for your mental health, because you are suddenly very exposed and there’s a fear of criticism. But the act of writing was.
Slowly, the fog lifted.
[. . .]
And many therapists I’ve spoken to since say I was actually getting therapy — I was just doing it to myself, by making myself face my own fears.
But I wouldn’t say that I’m cured. I still get bouts of anxiety, but I know how to manage them. I just allow myself to feel them. It’s not going to kill me. It’s unpleasant, but it’s a way to cope.
I thought that by my mid-20s, there was going to be nothing great in my life again. But there has been far more happiness and far more meaningful relationships after the illness.

Fleeing Chicago Suspect Shot Dead After Shooting Three Policemen

[From article]
The 29-year-old man who was killed after shooting three Chicago Police officers Monday night was a felon with a gun conviction in his background, police said Tuesday.
Lamar Harris fired at the officers with an illegal handgun that was recovered at the scene of the West Side shooting, said Anthony Guglielmi, the chief spokesman for the police department.
All three officers survived. Fellow cops with special training to treat bullet wounds in the field rushed to the scene to assist the wounded officers. They were carrying first-aid kits and bandages to give preliminary care to the officers until the Chicago Fire Department arrived, Guglielmi said.
“It helped, I was told,” Guglielmi said of the first aid provided by the officers, who had received Law Enforcement Medical and Rescue Training.
None of the officers had life-threatening injuries.

Chicago Police say Lamar Harris was killed Monday after shooting at and wounding three CPD officers.
Cook County Sheriff’s Office photo

Harris, whose criminal record includes arrests under the aliases Jason Gibson and Lamont Harris, had seven felony convictions and 43 arrests on his rap sheet, Guglielmi said.
Harris was facing charges of methamphetamine delivery and a hearing was scheduled in his case later this month, records show.
In 2012, he was convicted of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and resisting police officers and sentenced to four years in prison. He received almost 600 days’ credit for time already served in the Cook County Jail.
Shortly before 10 p.m., four officers were investigating suspected narcotics sales in the 3700 block of South Polk in the Homan Square neighborhood and saw Harris and woman in a “known drug area,” Guglielmi said.
Harris ran into a dark gangway and officers chased him, authorities said.
When they tried to stop him, Harris turned around and opened fire on the officers, striking three of them, police said.
At least one officer returned fire and killed Harris, police said.

New York City Strippers Charged With Drugging, Stealing From Patrons, Believe The Men Deserved It

Roselyn Keo, left, and Samantha Barbash are accused of drugging and robbing rich clients who Keo says had it coming. Photo: Steven Hirsch; Facebook

[Images of other strippers embedded. Their eyes reveal how sad they are.]

[From article]
Rich Wall Streeters had it coming when they were swindled by a ring of buxom strip-club workers, one of the women involved claims.
The curvaceous crooks at the Scores strip club specifically targeted wealthy “a–holes,” men who were usually married and who deserved to be drugged and bilked, former dancer — and now conspiracy and fraud defendant — Roselyn Keo tells New York magazine.
Keo and accused mastermind Samantha Barbash preyed on clients who treated them badly to get revenge, Keo said.
[. . .]
The vindictive vixens preyed on doctors and Wall Street executives, spiking their drinks with MDMA and ketamine, causing them to black out.
[. . .]
The strippers felt no guilt about conning clients who disrespected them or made sexually crude requests, Keo said. “There’s something extra satisfying about persuading a man who thinks you’re trash to spend his time and money on you,” she dished.
“Preferably so much that in the end, they hate themselves. It’s like, ‘Who doesn’t have any self-respect now, motherf–ker?’
“They all walked in ready to party. And yeah, we slipped them extra [drugs] that they didn’t know about. But all of it goes hand in hand — sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll. You know?” Keo said.
Her scam fell apart last year after a New Jersey doctor Zyad Younan, claimed he’d been drugged when he racked up a $135,000 bill at Scores. A federal DEA investigation confirmed he was telling the truth.

New Technology Allows Implanting Drugs With Devices That Dissolve in Body

US researchers have developed a device to treat infections wirelessly. An electronic implant (illustrated) was activated by a wireless signal. It used a heater to treat tissue that had been infected with staph. And one researcher said it could be a precursor to drugs being delivered via Wi-Fi activation in the future.

The heating device in the implants (illustrated) has a resistor and power-receiving coil made of magnesium, and the magnesium is wrapped in 'packet' of silk, keeping it safe and controlling its dissolution time. The ability of the device to dissolve is important, as it means such implants would not need to be removed.

Who ensures the implant is what it is supposed to be? Will criminals adopt this means of poisoning their targets?

[From article]
Researchers have developed a method to activate electronic implants in the body and eliminate bacterial infections using a wireless signal.
When triggered by remote technology, the gadget delivers heat to infected tissue.
And it could lead to technologies that enable drugs and treatment to be delivered to patients at the press of a button.
The technology was developed by researchers at Tufts University in Massachusetts and the University of Illinois.
Mice were given electronic implants that, when a signal was sent, heated up to treat tissue that was infected with staphylococcus, or staph, which can cause minor skin abscesses or life-threatening infections of the blood.
Tissues collected from the mice 24 hours after treatment showed no sign of the infection, while the device dissolved in 15 days, proving it can not only treat infections but also be disposed of easily.
[. . .]
But these new wireless therapy devices can handle the surgical process, and can then dissolve in minutes or weeks, depending on the time needed.
'This is an important demonstration step forward for the development of on-demand medical devices that can be turned on remotely to perform a therapeutic function in a patient and then safely disappear after their use, requiring no retrieval,' said senior author Fiorenzo Omenetto, professor of biomedical engineering at Tufts School of Engineering.

Drinking Water Polluted By Drugs

[From article]
A report on drinking water carried out by the Environmental Protection Agency has found samples of at least 25 different drugs, including medication to treat heart conditions, in supplies coming out of wastewater treatment plants.
[. . .]
'We're not trying to scare anyone, but we need to know what these chemical compounds will do to the environment and what are the long term effects for humans.'
The study will be published in the Environmental Pollution journal in the New Year.
[. . .]
The drugs find their way into the water system when our bodies release them when we urinate or if old drugs are flushed down the toilet.

This comment from Sharon Weatley (sp?) shows how effective propaganda
is in the US. She speaks of a "chemical imbalance" which is a fantasy
promoted by the drug industry and their enablers the psychiatric
profession. There is no such thing. A group of persons accused of
mental illness challenged the American Psychiatric Association to
provide evidence of their claim of a chemical imbalance. The APA was
unable to provide any evidence.

Applying logic to the claim, the psychiatric industry does not drill

into brains to do chemical tests on brain matter for imbalances. But
even if they did, there is no chemical balance against which to
measure. It is only one of the many false claims by psychiatrists and
drug companies which continue to cause civilians to ingest dangerous
chemicals in the name of healing. Without knowing the effects of those
chemicals on humans, a lot of violence results from persons who take
the drugs.

On Thursday night Friday morning October 25-26, 2012 the ABC news

anchor, Rob Nelson, on the World News Now overnight show said he did
not know what caused the nanny to kill the children. But he speculated
it was mental illness. Another misguided journalist broadcasting
nonsense, misleading civilians. It is more likely that persons accused
of mental illness are victims of violence than commit it. But
journalists refuse to scrutinize psychiatric drugs as a major cause of
violence. Even the drug-company-controlled FDA requires a black box
warning label on psychiatric drugs.

[From article]
Sharon Weatley, a writer and actress who is a former nanny and now
relies on baby sitters to take care of her daughters, ages 4 and 14,
said that if Ortega did indeed kill the children, "she is obviously
crazy and this is a chemical imbalance going on in a horrifically
tragic situation."

Bewildering the Herd, No Communists Exist, Fight Concepts

Liberals at Harvard and other universities have journalists and citizens convinced that Communists no longer exist. Keyser Soze (Kevin Spacey) explained in The Usual Suspects, "The greatest lie the devil ever told was he did not exist." Government liberals have citizens focused on wars on terror and drugs. No people are fighting America, just concepts, which cannot be defeated.

FInancial Scrutiny Needed of Police

An officer who stole drugs from police evidence rooms, may be a user. But he more than likely enjoys financial or other profits from stealing the drugs. Requiring police audits every six months would ensure that they are not making more money than they earn legally, or getting other consideration. Drug testing will not reveal selling drug evidence.

Why is US in Afghanistan?

Boris, without the heroin labs there is no reason to stay in Afghanistan. Do you have any idea how many people are employed transporting, manufacturing, and marketing drugs from Aghanistan? Russian people abandoned these rich sources of revenue. Now they whine because the USA makes the profits. Listen up, Boris, there are many elder Amercans whose sons and daughters pay their rent. There are lots of Mom and Pop groceries and fashion boutiques that would go out of business if the flow of drugs stopped. So why not open some rehab clinics in Moscow, Leningrad and Vladivostok to create employment oppportunities for your people as we do in the USA?
