New York City Corrections Officers Union Scrutinized By US Attorney

[From article]
Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara’s office appears to be focusing in part on claims in a union official’s lawsuit alleging the improper investment of union funds. Among the allegations in the lawsuit is that Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association President Norman Seabrook made a risky $5 million investment into an unnamed hedge fund last year without union board approval.
[. . .]
The investigation comes as Bharara negotiates a class-action lawsuit against the city claiming systemwide brutality against inmates by jail guards at the Rikers Island jail complex.
Abuse, neglect and corruption at Rikers have been the subject of increased media attention for more than a year after the AP first reported on claims of widespread brutality in the lockups and the gruesome deaths of mentally ill inmates.

After Six Year Delay, Special Prosecutor Appointed, Guards At Psychiatric Hospital Indicted For Homicide of Patient

Josh Messler, 23, Died In Custody, After Brutal Guard Attack in Hospital

[From article]
Lisa Brown says there is finally justice for her late son Joshua Messier who was only 23 years old when he died while being restrained by guards at Bridgewater State Hospital six years ago.
Now three of those guards have been indicted, charged with manslaughter and civil rights violations.
“I’m thankful to God that finally, finally when it seemed like there wasn’t going to be any justice that there’s a first step,” said Lisa Brown.
Josh Messier suffered from schizophrenia. He was sent to Bridgewater State Hospital after staffers at a private hospital filed assault and battery charges.
A month later, the incident at Bridgewater was captured on video. Following his restraint, Messier died of heart failure.
“They piled on top of him. They pushed into his back. Apparently they folded him in half so he couldn’t breath,” Brown said.
Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz declined to press charges after what he called an exhaustive investigation.
But last year, Attorney General Martha Coakley reopened the case appointing a special prosecutor who decided to seek charges. Attorney Roderick MacLeish represented Joshua’s mother.

Philadelphia Psychiatrist Shoots Patient Who Killed His Case Worker

Shock: Theresa Hunt was shot dead by Richard Plotts in a Philadelphia hospital on Thursday after an argument broke out and a gun battle ensued

[From article]
Psychiatrist Dr. Lee Silverman pumped three bullets into Plotts at the Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby, Pennsylvania on Thursday after the patient had shot and killed caseworker Theresa Hunt.
Authorities say Plotts, 49, had been ranting about the hospital's no-gun policy when he pulled out his weapon.
Police found 39 unused rounds on Plotts and seized two more revolvers and a computer when they searched his home in Upper Derby, Pennsylvania.
Silverman, who has been hailed as a hero for his actions, crouched behind his desk, took out his own handgun and returned fire.
The hospital is unlikely to take action against Silverman for having the gun on the premises and says it will welcome him back to work.

Remains Of 5,000 Mental Hospital Patients Identified

[From article]
Between 1913 and 1971, more than 5,300 people were cremated at the hospital.
Most were patients at the mental institution, but some died at local hospitals, the state tuberculosis hospital, a state penitentiary or the Fairview Training Center, where people with developmental disabilities were institutionalized.
Hospital officials have been working for years to reunite the remains of their former patients with surviving relatives. Since the urns were found by lawmakers on a tour of the hospital in 2005, 183 have been claimed.
The 3,409 that remain and have been identified are listed in a searchable online database. Thirty-eight urns will likely never be identified; they're unmarked, have duplicate numbers or aren't listed in ledgers of people cremated at the hospital.

Thousands Of Bodies Found On Grounds of Former Mississippi Mental Hospital

[From article]
Officials now believe there may be as many as 2,000 century-old graves underneath the soil.
Archaeologists have been studying grave sites discovered on the UMC campus for some time; several dozen grave sites were discovered last year.
[. . .]
'The property that the University of Mississippi Medical Center is located on used to be the location of the state insane asylum, which operated from 1855 to 1935,' Mazurak said.
'Historically we knew that there were a lot of graves, many of which were not marked. In the '90s, we took the handful of marked graves and reinterred them in a designated cemetery area,' he said.
[. . .]
'We're guessing because there's no personal remains, no clothes, not even really any buttons or pins or anything, that they were probably residents of the asylum and either buried in a shroud or not buried with anything, so that would put them probably around in the mid to late 1800s to early 1900s,' said Anderson.
[. . .]
Moving the bodies would reportedly cost about $3 million so the University has said it will probably look at alternate sites for construction, rather than try to relocate the graves.
The expansion will most likely be relocated to another location on the 164-acre campus.
It's possible there could be more unmarked graves belonging to tuberculosis patients, former slaves, or possibly even Civil War dead, according to the Clarion-Ledger.
The State Lunatic Asylum opened on the site in 1855, housing 150 patients.
After the end of the Civil War, it expanded to house more than 300 residents in a district known as Asylum Hill.

What lies beneath? Gruesome find as workers discover more than 1,000 corpses at site of old Mississippi mental asylum
University of Mississippi Medical Center had planned to build a parking garage east of the dental school
Testing in the area revealed 1,000 bodies, believed to have been patients at the Mississippi State Lunatic Asylum a century ago
Future expansion plans might be halted because other bodies may lie beneath the earth including former slaves, TB victims and possibly even Civil War dead
Staff have always known there was a cemetery associated with the old asylum somewhere on the property, but no one knew for sure where it was until now

Nevada Dumping Mental Patients in Other States

'Shipped off': James Brown, who was being treated for psychosis and schizophrenia in Nevada, was put on a one-way bus to California - where he knew no one - and told to call police when he got there

Las Vegas Released 1500 Mental Patients Who All Got Guns and Killed Thousands

Good-bye Las Vegas, Hello North Korea

1500 mental patients were released then they got guns and shot up theaters and schools killing 200,000 unarmed people? That explains why Democrats and control freaks want more psychiatry and  less guns. It is easier to ban mentally ill people. That would end all gun violence. Taxpayers would save money not having to provide treatment. Send mentally ill people to Venezuela, Cuba, Iran and North Korea, where they will be treated with the respect and care they deserve.

Good idea menckenlite...you go first. [Laura Bauer]

As the National Acting Director of What is Best for Mentally Ill American People I  send Mental Patients to those countries every month. They get free housing, food, and twice a week they get foot massages. I get $29.57 for each patient I send.

Testimony From Mental Patient Convicted of Murder

If there ever was an expert on legislation it is a self admitted mentally ill man convicted of killing another person. Who needs elections? Why not just allow persons found guilty and/or mentally ill to write the laws? They could not do any worse than the elected criminals class that writes them now.

Control Freaks Want To Monitor Mental Patients

[From article]
"But while sex offenders are tracked and monitored via state and federal registries, no such publically-accessible tracking system exists for the violently mentally ill, including those who, like Essex, were found not responsible for violent crimes by reason of insanity, sent by judges' to psych wards, and then released years later."

Criminals Care for CA Vulnerable

For some years MA allowed prisoners out on work release to watch patients at night in mental hospitals. There were thefts, rapes and assaults of patients who were ignored when they complained. It is unknown if the Bay State continues this practice.

Psychiatric Industry Thrives Without Stimulus

Headline shows bias. These are humans with disabilities. They are not diseases. The important fact omitted is greedy psychiatrists and drug companies did not have their funding cut, only safe havens for persons with disabilities to hang. When will the corruption of the psychiatric industry be exposed? Greedy pols take campaign money to maintain funding for the human services corporations. Persons with disabilities with up to 85 percent unemployment do not have PACs or lobbyists. How long before MA police begin shooting mental patients? Oh they already started. They're using private security vigilantes.

California Gulag Closes

Americans are brainwashed concerning the psychiatric industry and the drug industry. Under Stalin and Hitler Russians and Germans used psychiatric hospitals to silence critics and to punish members of unpopular groups. Clueless Americans believe that American psychiatrists have had their genes cleansed of greed, mendacity and sadism. One question never asked is why do police enforce psychiatric diagnoses? Why is the notion of unlawful discrimination toward persons with disabilities not apply to persons accused of mental illness? Why are the rights of persons with disabilities never enforced or defended by the taxpayer funded attorneys? Closing this den of abuse is good news. The useful idiots who lament its closing are those who support and enjoy benefits from the abuses of vulnerable persons. [There are some humorous comments under this story.]

Scrutinize Psychiatry Not Its Victims

This article marginalizes people with disabilities. (Alissa Quart, "Listening to Madness," NEWSWEEK, May 2, 2009 (Magazine issue May 18, 2009)) Quart says, "Will Hall believes that psychiatrists are prone to making arbitrary distinctions between 'crazy' and 'healthy,' and to using medication as tranquilizers." No psychiatrist can distinguish clearly between sanity and insanity. Drugs merely inhibit offensive speech and behavior - alleged symptoms. They do not cure causes. Only psychiatrists can see mental illnesses. There are no pathologies. Police, psychiatrists, medical physicians, politicians and journalists all reinforce the "stigma attached to mental illness."

Among drug company flacks and psychiatrists "questioning the need for medication [. . .] is controversial." Among others it is common sense and good patient behavior.

Quart rewrites the Icarus myth as psychiatry. Icarus' father Daedalus counseled his son to make wings to escape from King Minos' Labyrinth prison. Icarus was carried away with his success just as politicians often are (John Edwards, Barack Obama: Come on down!). He flew too close to the sun after ignoring Daedalus' warning. Psychiatrists call that oppositional disorder a common activity of youth. The therapeutic state makes all human activity mental illness. Psychiatric poets create illnesses by consensus.

Quart distorts the nature of the "Treatment Advocacy Center." TAC promotes forced treatment and an extremely negative view of persons accused of mental illness that violates the Americans with Disabilities Act. E. Fuller Torrey is the totalitarian architect of this evil organization.

Quart quotes Peter Kramer saying, "Psychotic depression is a disease." He promotes the "widespread use of antidepressants." Even the drug-company-friendly FDA places a black box warning on anti depressants which have been shown to cause suicidal behavior in some persons. Why is that fact omitted from this report?

Why is the police power of the state used to force medical treatment? Why are police empowered to make psychiatric diagnoses on the street? Newsweek should scrutinize psychiatry and its drug company funding rather than the victims of psychiatric abuses.
