Rikers Island New York Prison Guard Charged With Rape of Visitor

Photo: AP

[From article]
A Rikers Island correction officer raped a female inmate for more than 15 minutes while another officer watched, a new Manhattan federal lawsuit charges.
The woman, identified only as “Jane Doe,” was on a Department of Correction bus inside the jail complex March 20 when a male inmate bribed a correction officer to leave him alone with her and the pair had apparently consensual sex, according to the legal papers.
But then the officer got back on the bus, told the male inmate to get lost, and raped the woman, the suit says.

Inmate Awarded $750,000 After Six Day Erection While In Custody Of New York City Corrections Department

[From article]
Now that’s a stiff penalty.
A former inmate who sued the city for making him suffer through a painful six-day erection was handed a $750,000 settlement on Monday.
The hefty payout amounts to $125,000 for each day of hard time served by Rodney Cotton, 51, who said he was treated “worse than a dog” at the Manhattan Detention Complex while enduring the uncomfortable side effect of an anti-depressant medication.
Cotton said the lack of medical attention rendered him impotent.
“It just started hurting,” Cotton told The Post Monday of his ordeal, which began on July 4, 2011, near the start of a 2½-year sentence for a parole violation. “And I’m like, what the hell is going on? It wasn’t going down.”
Cotton had asked to be taken to a jail clinic, but a guard at the facility, known as The Tombs, told him he’d have to wait until after the holiday weekend.
[. . .]
“There’s a young lady in the building who likes me. I’m scared to try anything with her. I take her out. I take her to Red Lobster. I take her to Outback. I do things for her son. But I don’t think I’m going to try having sex with her. It would be too embarrassing.”
Doctors said a lasting erection is a side effect of Risperdal, and a warning about it is listed on the website of the manufactuer, Janssen.
Cotton said he started taking Risperdal in 2003, the year after he finished a 12-year prison stint for manslaughter for killing a man during a 1989 fight over a sheepskin coat.

NYC Rikers Island Corrections Officer Breaks Arm of Disabled Woman Prisoner, 77, Covers Up Criminal Abuse

,
M.J. Norwick, 77, Attacked By Corrections Officer

[From article]
The prisoner, identified as M . J . Norwick, 77, in the Manhattan federal court suit, had recently returned from Elmhurst Hospital after suffering a heart attack when correction officer Charlene Rosado allegedly attacked her on March 18, 2014.
“Without any warning of her intent to use extreme physical force, C.O. Rosado suddenly and violently pushed Norwick to the ground,” the suit states.
“DOC investigators reviewed video footage of the incident, describing that: In one motion, CO Rosado turns to inmate Norwick and appears to, with both hands, forcefully shove her at her shoulders straight down onto her back.”
Rosado then filled out a “use of force” report saying that Norwick fell “of her own accord,” according to the lawsuit.
[. . .]
The lawsuit comes amid a raft of problems at the troubled jail.
Last week, two Rikers guards were arrested after one fatally kicked an ailing and restrained inmate, telling him as he lay dying, “That’s what you get for f—ing with me.”

Every Edit You Make, We'll Be Watching You

[From article]
Google Docs is the company’s answer to Microsoft Word — given away free, it lets people write in a simple interface and store all the results in the internet, so other people can see and potentially edit it. But if those documents are shared with other people, they can use the new tool to explore all of the edits that have ever been made to them.
The extension is called Draftback and was made by James Somers, a writer and programmer. It works by putting a button in the browser that can be selected, bringing up a full history of every word that has ever been written into it

NYC Corrections Officer Shoots Thief Dead

Here's an example of how crime drops when  more people have legal guns. Less crime, less costs to taxpayers.

[From article]
An off-duty corrections officer fatally shot a gunman who tried to rob his motorcycle in Queens, cops said.
The Queensboro corrections officer was standing outside 82-10 Rockaway Boulevard in Woodhaven with four other bikers when they spotted a man with a gun walking toward them around 10:30, Saturday, cops said.
“Give me your keys,” said the man, pointing a .380 caliber handgun, cops said.
The corrections officer then fired a shot striking the robber in the head, cops said.

Julius Caesar's Assassination

[From article]
In 45 BC, Rome was emerging from five years of civil war and policy debates concerned the very nature of the Roman Republic. Caesar had just been declared Dictator for Ten Years by the Roman senate, and sought more.
He believed that the Republic was an entity whose time had come and gone, and that “only his genius offered the people of the empire peace and prosperity.” The Roman Senate, having grown comfortable with their own power, believed otherwise.
Caesar understood how to nurture the love of his people. His soldiers were well-paid, and he passed laws (over the Senate’s objections) helping the poor, including protecting them from abusive government officials.
[. . .]
In early 44 BC, in tribute to Caesar’s recent military victories, the Senate proclaimed him Rome’s Dictator in Perpetuity, and there had long been talk that Caesar sought to be King, an unacceptable occurrence for many Romans.
[. . .]
Cassius, a general and senator, had several motives for wanting Caesar dead.
In addition to fearing his ambition, he had been passed over for several high-level positions and faced rumors that Caesar slept with his wife.
[. . .]
They decided to kill Caesar in the Senate House. They felt it would be the safest place, since no weapons were allowed in the Senate, several senators were involved and Caesar’s other friends would not be there to protect him.
[. . .]
As he made his point, Cimber “disrespected Caesar by coming up to him with his hands out instead of keeping them humbly beneath his toga. Then, Cimber took hold of Caesar’s toga and held it so tightly that he kept Caesar from getting up.” Finally, Cimber “pulled the toga from Caesar’s shoulder.”
[. . .]
Caesar likely received 23 stab wounds and died within minutes.
[. . .]
Antony and Octavian divided Rome and its territories between them, and after Antony’s death, Octavian became Caesar Augustus, founder of the Roman Empire.
[. . .]
“Far from condemning Caesar as a tyrant, people mourn him as a martyr. Caesar’s genius and his sympathy for the poor live on while his war against the Republic in favor of one-man rule . . . [is] forgotten.”

New York City Corrections Officers Union Scrutinized By US Attorney

[From article]
Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara’s office appears to be focusing in part on claims in a union official’s lawsuit alleging the improper investment of union funds. Among the allegations in the lawsuit is that Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association President Norman Seabrook made a risky $5 million investment into an unnamed hedge fund last year without union board approval.
[. . .]
The investigation comes as Bharara negotiates a class-action lawsuit against the city claiming systemwide brutality against inmates by jail guards at the Rikers Island jail complex.
Abuse, neglect and corruption at Rikers have been the subject of increased media attention for more than a year after the AP first reported on claims of widespread brutality in the lockups and the gruesome deaths of mentally ill inmates.

NY Rikers Island Officers Seek Protection From Inmates, Whose Lawsuit Says Guards Poisoned Them

[From article]
Some 50 members of the Correction Officers Benevolent Association — including its president Norman Seabrook — blasted the city’s jails commissioner for not doing enough to protect rank-and-file workers.
Correction officers in full uniform stood behind the coffin to show what could happen if Correction Commissioner Joe Ponte doesn’t address safety concerns in city jails.

A group of Rikers Island inmates say seething guards purposefully spiked their meatloaf with rat poison , possibly to avenge the attempted rape of a female jail guard last wee k .
The 19 prisoners allege in a new Brooklyn federal lawsuit that they fell violently ill after being served meals in their housing unit on March 3 during a three-day lockdown stemming from the attempted sex assault, court papers state.
[. . .]
“Some of the inmates kept the food as evidence,” she told the Post Monday. “I personally saw what looked like blue pellets – especially in the meatloaf – that are consistent with rat poison.”
Squillace said that a prisoner is usually assigned to assist Rikers staff in preparing and distributing meals. But that inmate – Ellis Wilson – claims he was suspiciously barred from taking part in the process on the day of the incident.

Maryland Corrections Officer Arrested For Shooting At NSA and Individuals

Prince George's Co police searching Beltsville home of Hong Young suspect in ICC shooting yesterday.

While collecting every phone call and email sent or made by Americans, the NSA was unable to identify this dangerous public official. Instead the massive resources of the US and state governments joined by crime families, target law abiding individuals, harassing, provoking, disturbing their sleep, tampering with their phones and computers. No need to stir up dangerous persons. Better to focus on harmless citizens. Isn't that what government is for?

[From article]
Hong Young, 35, of Beltsville, Maryland, is charged with attempted first-degree murder and other charges in the shootings in Anne Arundel, Prince George's and Howard counties. From 2012 until his resignation in May 2014, Young worked as a correctional officer at a Jessup facility, according to Maryland Secretary of Public Safety Stephen Moyer. Nothing significant was found in his file, Moyer said.
[. . .]
About 6 p.m., shots were fired, striking a building near the headquarters of the National Security Association at Fort Meade. U.S. Park Police investigated a report of shots fired near the headquarters of the National Security Agency.

Can Lawless Abuses of White House, Dept. of Justice Be Remedied?

[From article]
With all the cross-currents of political controversies raging today, what is the overriding national issue that makes this year's Congressional elections so crucial?
That issue is whether, despite all the lawless edicts of President Obama, threatening one-man rule, we can still salvage enough of the Constitution to remain a free, democratic nation.
[. . .]
if he can appoint enough federal judges who share his contempt for the Constitution's limits on federal government power in general, and presidential powers in particular, then the United States of America can continue on the path to becoming another banana republic, even after Obama has left the White House.
[. . .]
If only Obama's critics and opponents understood this momentous issue as clearly as he does!
[. . .]
Critics who deplore President Obama's foreign policies in general, and his weak response to the ISIS threat in particular, as showing incompetence -- and who see his incessant fundraising as just a weird distraction -- fail to understand how different his priorities are from theirs.
[. . .]
His ordering thousands of American troops into Ebola-infested Liberia shows the same ideologically driven callousness.

Correcting Ballot Errors

[From article]
"The body politic learns from its mistakes and uses its power to correct them. Taken as a whole, this bunch of rubes and dupes and boobs shows a remarkably commonsensical approach to these things by saying, in essence:

Nothing is irreversible. Change is possible.

The political message of July 4, 2010 that is looking increasingly like a harbinger of doom for the man who popularized it two years ago is simply this:

Yes, we can"
