An independent candidate for Congress has posted a campaign sign in Tennessee that says “Make America White Again.”
Rick Tyler, who is running as an independent, says he put the sign up along US Highway 411 near Benton. He told WRCB-TV that he doesn’t hate “people of color,” but wants to return to an earlier time “when there were no break-ins; no violent crime; no mass immigration.”
He also posted a sign with an image of the White House surrounded by Confederate flags.
Tyler is one of three independent candidates running for the seat now held by Chuck Fleischmann, a Republican, who faces both Republican and Democratic contenders.
The primary election is Aug. 4.

Intolerance, Bigotry and Tragedies at Vanderbilt University

In case you missed the hoopla, I was almost run off the Vanderbilt University campus in 2015 by student protesters and petitions denouncing me for bigotry and hatred. This was related to an opinion piece I wrote for The Tennessean about the Islamic faith and the need for Muslims to fully integrate themselves into our society. As a high profile, black, conservative woman on the Vanderbilt faculty, I was a conspicuous target.
During my sabbatical last year, I became the target of harassment and a petition demanding that I be suspended until I submitted to mandatory sensitivity training. That’s a rather odd request of a first-generation college graduate and a person who has overcome poverty, attained tenured positions at Princeton University and Vanderbilt, and had her research cited by the U.S. Supreme Court. My Christian faith, not my race and gender, defines me. It shapes the perspective I now share with you about Vanderbilt, where I have taught for the past 16 years.
Vanderbilt has excelled in many ways during my time here, but in other areas, such as those related to religious freedom and free speech, its policies have led to an unhealthy environment, making it more difficult for some students to thrive spiritually and mentally. On top of all that, there has been a series of unfortunate events that secular-minded people will dismiss as coincidental. The campus has been shaken by untimely deaths. So far in 2016 we have had one current student (Taylor Force) and two former students (Justin and Stephanie Shults) killed in separate terrorist attacks abroad just weeks apart. Force died March 8 in a terrorist attack during, of all things, a school trip to Israel. Two weeks later, the Shultses were victims of the Brussels airport bombing.
That must defy any reasonable actuarial tables for one university, especially one in denial about the threat of radical Islam. But there’s more. In the last three weeks, two undergraduate students have been found dead in their dorm rooms. One death occurred on April 22 (Cheryl Alexandra Morris). Another student (Elliot Meister) was found dead on April 27. We grieve the deaths of these young people and pray for their parents and loved ones. Nevertheless, we wonder if more could have done for Cheryl Alexandra and Elliot.

That’s not all that’s happened at Vanderbilt in recent times. Going back just a year or two, we can see where the University has witnessed more than its fair share of tragedy and mishaps, to include the rape case involving Vanderbilt football players. There’s even the quirky: last year, a tree fell and injured several people in a group of prospective students and their parents touring the campus. What are the odds of a tree falling on visiting parents and prospective students on an otherwise calm day? Note: it happened right outside the admissions office. Only God knows if this means anything.

Vanderbilt’s run of bad luck over the years includes problems at its medical school and affiliated hospital as well as an embezzlement case involving an administrator who engaged in inappropriate behavior with a minor. Non-Christians can scoff at all this, ridiculing me for even broaching the possibility of a spiritual connection between the series of unfortunate incidents at Vanderbilt University and its hostility toward orthodox Christians, as evidenced by its 2011 adoption of a “non-discrimination” policy that has resulted in 14 Christian groups losing their recognition as student organizations. The groups no longer recognized on campus gave up their registered group status rather than compromise on Christian values and principles.

I wonder if there is a spiritual connection between Vanderbilt’s treatment of the Christian groups and some of its recent tragedies. We will never know for sure. Nevertheless, I would like to see Vanderbilt University reconsider the policy that deprives its campus of the vibrant Christian influence that existed before the University adopted its 2011 “policy. Tennessee High School Teen Shot Dead Trying To Protect Three Girls

"[He] was very well liked by his peers and his teachers," Fulton High football coach Rob Black said during a news conference today. "This was a fine, fine young man. ... I want to try to continue to celebrate the life that he had [and] the impact he had on his peers."
At the news conference, Knoxville Police Department Chief David Rausch choked back tears at one point as he detailed the Thursday night shooting that killed the 15-year-old sophomore and football player at Fulton High School. Rausch said that Dobson had been trying to shield three girls from the barrage of gunfire.
"Unfortunately, they picked a random group of young men and women who were just hanging out and trying to prepare to celebrate the holiday," he said of the shooters.

Raush said that around 7:18 p.m. Thursday police responded to a call about shots being fired in a home. Inside the house, which had been struck by gunfire multiple times, police found a 46-year-old woman as well as a 10-year-old child. Raush said the woman, Lisa Perry, had been shot more than once in her lower back. She was hospitalized. The child was not injured.
Several hours later, around 10:12 p.m., Brandon Perry, Lisa Perry's 23-year-old son, and "several additional males" then drove to a different area and allegedly "randomly fired multiple times" at a group of young adults, including Dobson. Dobson was struck and killed. No other injuries were reported.

Rausch said authorities believed there was a connection between the shootings and gangs.
"This is a very active investigation. ... We know all three of the incidents that happened overnight are connected," he said. "There were multiple individuals out there."
Later today, police announced that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the three overnight shootings.

A top Tennessee Republican lawmaker believes the time has come for the National Guard to round up any Syrian refugees who have recently settled in the state and to stop any additional Syrian refugees from entering Tennessee.
"We need to activate the Tennessee National Guard and stop them from coming in to the state by whatever means we can," said House GOP Caucus Chairman Glen Casada, R-Franklin, referencing refugees.

"Tennessee is a sovereign state. If the federal government is forsaking the obligation to protect our citizens, we need to act," Casada said during a phone interview with The Tennessean on Tuesday.

But Casada, Rep. Rick Womick, R-Rockvale, and at least a few other lawmakers believe it's time to call a special legislative session to look at doing something.
"I believe we should take a long look at the entire refugee program and use any means necessary to stop refugees from entering Tennessee if they come from countries with ties to ISIS, Al-Qaeda and similar terrorist groups," House Majority Whip Jeremy Durham, R-Franklin, said in a statement.
"If the U.S. Supreme Court says the federal government cannot force states to expand their Medicaid rolls, I'm not sure how the federal government believes it can legitimately force Tennessee to accept refugees from countries with known terrorists."

A man and woman facing murder charges for running over a 65-year-old woman outside a Wal-Mart in suburban Atlanta are suspected in 10 purse snatchings and a kidnapping in parking lots in five Southern states, authorities said on Monday.
Brandon Shawn Smith, 27, and Stephanie Marie Rodriguez, 37, were arrested over the weekend in central Tennessee, according to police in Covington, Georgia, where the Wal-Mart death occurred. They were jailed in Tennessee on Monday awaiting extradition to Georgia.

Authorities say Smith and Rodriguez may have been involved in at least 10 purse snatchings and one kidnapping in recent weeks in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Florida.
“These suspects targeted Wal-Marts and elderly female victims walking alone to their cars in the day and night,” Covington police said in a statement.
Smith and Rodriguez were charged with murder in the Nov. 16 death of Marsha Johnson. Covington police said Smith grabbed Johnson’s purse outside a Wal-Mart and dragged her through the parking lot before running her over with his car multiple times.
Rodriguez was in the car with Smith at the time of the killing, police said.
Covington police spokesman Capt. Craig Treadwell said the two lived from “motel to motel” supporting themselves through purse snatchings.

Not a particularly impressive student, he struggled with school and his future until his father-in-law gave him the autobiography of Clarence Darrow, the famed attorney from the Scopes trial in Dayton, Tenn.

Thompson is seen with client Marie Ragghianti in 1977, when he was working an attorney. Tenn. Gov. Ray Blanton was accused of firing Ragghianti for refusing to go along with a cash-for-clemency scheme.

In 1977 Mr. Thompson found himself representing the whistle-blower in one of Tennessee's biggest political scandals. In her role as a parole administrator, Marie Ragghianti refused to release inmates granted pardons after paying then-Gov. Ray Blanton. Mr. Thompson successfully represented Ragghianti in a wrongful termination case, helping her win a settlement and a return to her job in 1978.
That case eventually became the subject of a book and launched Mr. Thompson's acting career. Mr. Thompson played himself in the 1985 version of the movie “Marie." Critics praised his performance, and more roles soon followed.

An 11-year-old boy has been charged with murder after he killed his 8-year-old neighbor, police said, and witnesses say it was because the girl wouldn’t let him see her puppy.
Deputies were called to the neighborhood in White Pine, about 40 miles east of Knoxville, on Saturday night. The boy shot the girl from inside his home with his father’s 12-gauge shotgun, said Jefferson County Sheriff Bud McCoig.
Latasha Dyer told WATE-TV her daughter was playing outside when the next-door neighbor asked to see the puppy. McKayla told the boy “no,” and he shot her, Dyer said. A neighbor, Misty Edwards, said her niece was playing with the girl and saw what happened.
“She was a precious little girl. She was a mommy’s girl. No matter how bad of a mood you were in, she could always make you smile,” Dyer told the station. “I want her back in my arms.”

The two children went to the same school, where McKayla was in second grade and the boy in fifth grade. Dyer said the boy had bullied her daughter before, when they first moved to the neighborhood.
“He was making fun of her, calling her names, just being mean to her,” she said. “I had to go to the principal about him and he quit for a while, and then all of a sudden yesterday he shot her.”

But multiple signs posted at the property's entrance and along a staffed check-in table told those arriving to "Please have cash ready or make checks payable to: Donald J. Trump for President, Inc." Another read, "Entry Fee $100 Per Person."
On Saturday, Trump expressed frustration that coverage of Friday's event focused on the discrepancy.
"I got so angry at my people because somebody put up a sign saying $100," he said.

A Tennessee bank executive and his family were held hostage at gunpoint and he was forced to rob the bank where he works, according to reports.
Tanner Harris, first vice president of SmartBank, was held alongside his family inside their home in Knoxville.
Two masked men - armed with handguns and a rifle - blindfolded and handcuffed Mr Harris and his wife Abbey, The Knoxville News Sentinel reported.
They then forced the couple and their five-month-old son into the family car and drove them to the bank where Mr Harris works.

"The bank executive has access to [a] greater amount of funds within the bank, not just what's in the teller drawers, which is what your typical robber is going to get.
"It also prevents them from being on camera."
The suspects are were both white males. One was around 6ft 1in tall, while the other was 5ft 9ins with a stocky build.

Suspect Arrested In Shooting Death of Memphis, TN Policeman

The man accused of killing an officer in Memphis, Tennessee, has surrendered to authorities, but the case is far from over, the city's police chief said.
"This is just the first step in a very long healing process," Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong told reporters Monday.
Tremaine Wilbourn, 29, turned himself in to federal marshals and was being questioned by homicide investigators Monday evening, Armstrong said. He's expected to be arraigned on Tuesday.
Investigators, who'd warned that Wilbourn was armed and dangerous, had been working around the clock to track him down, the police chief said.
"I think he felt the walls closing in," Armstrong said. "I think he thought that it would probably be in his best interest just to turn himself in."

But even with the suspect behind bars, the police chief noted there's a key question that remains in the case: Why was he on the streets in the first place?
"If he's in jail Saturday night, then we're not here today talking about the death of a police officer," he said.
Wilbourn had been out on supervised release for a 121-month sentence for robbery.
"All the signs were there," Armstrong said. "His actions had clearly demonstrated that he was a violent individual, and I have a thing that I tell people all the time, anybody that robs somebody is one step away from killing somebody."

It started as a regular traffic stop on a weekend night in Tennessee. Officer Sean Bolton saw an illegally parked car on the streets of Memphis, pulled up in front of it and shone his spotlight.
When he approached the vehicle, a passenger confronted him.
A struggle ensued, and the passenger shot Bolton multiple times, authorities said. The car drove off, leaving the officer for dead.

A sailor who was wounded in the Chattanooga, Tenn., gun rampage died early Saturday, becoming the fifth fatality in the shootings, the U.S. Navy said.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Randall Smith died two days after a gunman opened fire at two military facilities, his step-grandmother Darlene Proxmire told the Daily News.
Smith, 26, was shot three times while working as a logistics specialist at the Navy Operational Support Center, where four Marines were slaughtered in a barrage of bullets, his family said.
The sailor succumbed to his wounds at 2:17 a.m. Saturday, days after he tried reassuring his wife Angie he was OK after undergoing surgery, the U.S. Navy and his family said.

Police say that counterfeit bill was printed on computer paper and that each side had been glued together.
According to the Times News, Downs told the officer she received the money from a gas station a few days prior, but that she never inspected the bill.
Police then searched Downs’ purse and found a $100 bill which was also counterfeit. The Times News reports the bill was printed in black and white and that the back of the bill was printed upside down.
Police also found a receipt for a printer and copy paper in her purse.
“I don’t give a ****, all these other b****** get to print money, so I can too,” she reportedly told police when she was arrested.
The Times News reports that when Downs was at the jail, she told officers that she read online Obama created a law that permitted her to print her own money because she’s on a fixed income.
When officers searched her apartment, they found counterfeit bills totaling between $30,000 to $50,000.

Deputies were called twice to the home in Rogersville. After the second time Johnny Allen Richards, 33, and Erin Brooke Lawson, 32, allegedly knocked on the neighbors door, hit the victim with a rake with enough force to break the handle, then stabbed the victim in the arm with the broken end of the handle.
That’s when Hawkins County deputies were called to the house for a third time.
“I did observe several lacerations on (the neighbor) consistent with how he stated he was injured,” the arresting officer wrote in the police report. “There was blood on the end of the rake handle that was recovered at the scene. (The neighbor) stated the Mr. Richards hit him with a 2-by-2 stick, and it was recovered at the scene.”

"As soon as I was about to put my key in, I just hear something come behind me real fast and I jumped and turned around and I had a big gun in my face," said victim Margaret Watkins.
Watkins and her 5-year-old daughter were held up at gunpoint in their own driveway by a man wearing a mask.
"I'm holding my baby...then he was like, 'Turn around turn around'...I guess my daughter was still looking at him he put the gun in her head," said Watkins. "And then he asks me the pin code to my bank card and I gave it to him. I was so scared I couldn't even lie."
Watkins says she's grateful to be alive, but she's definitely making some changes.
“I added locks, but I think I'm going to get some cameras,” said Watkins.
Officials arrested the two teens charged with aggravated robbery, among other charges, Friday afternoon.

The Millersville, Tennessee Police Department will institute policy changes after an officer pulled over a vehicle with a dead child in the trunk.
Millersville Police Chief David Hindman said an officer pulled over a vehicle on Interstate 65 Wednesday afternoon because the temporary tags were unreadable.
The driver presented a Saudi driver's license and told the officer he had a deceased baby in his trunk that he was transporting for a proper Muslim burial.
The officer asked to see the child, but the driver refused and told him it was against his religion. The officer then let the driver go.

The mother of an eight-year-old wants to know why a Tennessee school teacher gave her child a handout from the Nation of Islam that portrayed the presidents on Mount Rushmore as being racists.

The handout then explains that George Washington hailed from Virginia, a “prime breeder of black people.” Of Theodore Roosevelt, it was alleged he called Africans “ape-like.” There were also disparaging remarks made of Thomas Jefferson (he enslaved 200 Africans) and Abraham Lincoln.

“At first, she did not recall which paper it was,” she said. “Later in the day, she found the paper and told me she didn’t like what it said – and said she must have printed it by mistake.”
The teacher also told Sommer that her son was not supposed to take the Nation of Islam handout home. It was supposed to stay in the classroom. That bit of news caused her great alarm.

“The fact that students were cautioned against allowing their parents to see anything is deeply troubling,” West told me. “The only reasonable explanation is they don’t want parents to know what it is their children are learning.”

I find it hard to believe an 8-year-old boy would steal a handout from a teacher’s desk, bring it home and then concoct an elaborate tale to cover up the crime.
But let’s suspend reality for just a moment and say the little boy did take that handout. Regardless, there’s no disputing the fact that it was on the teacher’s desk.

But, in the wake of media publicity just weeks prior to the event, Superintendent Jim McIntyre, rescinded the offer, saying it would cause a "disruption" at the school.
John Peach, director for the organization's Knoxville chapter, and Bill French, one of the scheduled guest speakers, then filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in August, suing the school board, McIntyre and Michael Reynolds, the principal of Farragut High School.

Lawsuit forces Tennessee school district to allow after-school speech critical of Sharia

–KNOXVILLE – After canceling a town hall meeting at the request of Muslim activists, a Tennessee school district and two school officials have settled a lawsuit over the public’s right to voice concerns about the growing acceptance of Islamic law, known as Sharia law, spreading through American communities. The settlement was finalized Wednesday evening when the district approved a policy barring school officials from selectively determining which subjects can be discussed by members of the public using school facilities.

In February, the Knoxville chapter of ACT! for America, an organization opposed to Sharia, planned an after-hours town hall meeting at a local area high school.

John Peach, president of the Knoxville chapter of ACT! for America, and Bill French sued the school district in U.S. District Court on August 4, 2014, for violating their First Amendment right of free speech and their Fourteenth Amendment rights of equal protection and due process. The county agreed to settle the lawsuit [Peach vs. Knox County Schools] just 21 days after it was filed. In addition to revising its facility use policy, the county will pay attorney’s fees and costs.

The new facility use policy states in part that “[a]pproval for use of school buildings and property will not be withheld based upon the content of the message or viewpoint of the applicant.”

“This is a victory for free speech,” said Bill Becker, president of Freedom X, a non-profit legal organization fighting discrimination against conservatives and Christians. “Sharia is incompatible with our constitutional and legal protections. That was the message Knox County school officials tried to censor. It is unfortunate we have to educate the educators about our freedoms, but we are thankful that Knox county attorneys recognized litigation would have been futile for the district.”

Knox County Schools superintendent James P. McIntyre, Jr., agreed to cancellation of ACT’s event after receiving letters from Ibrahim Hooper, communications director for the Council for American-Islamic Relations (“CAIR”) and AbdulRaman Murphy, a Muslim youth chaplain at the University of Tennessee. The activists falsely labeled ACT! a “hate group” and falsely characterized French as a bigot. They speculated the town hall meeting would encourage violence at the school and would disrupt the school environment.

After receiving the letters, Farragut High School’s principal at the time, Michael F. Reynolds, contacted McIntyre fearing that allowing the town hall meeting to take place would convert the school into “a public forum for harassment and bullying practices that contradict the open-minded, academic discussion we seek to teach and foster.”

In 1969, the U.S. Supreme Court held in Tinker v. Des Moines Sch. Dist. that “in our system, undifferentiated fear or apprehension of disturbance is not enough to overcome the right to freedom of expression. Any departure from absolute regimentation may cause trouble. Any variation from the majority's opinion may inspire fear. Any word spoken, in class, in the lunchroom, or on the campus, that deviates from the views of another person may start an argument or cause a disturbance. But our Constitution says we must take this risk and our history says that it is this sort of hazardous freedom -- this kind of openness -- that is the basis of our national strength and of the independence and vigor of Americans who grow up and live in this relatively permissive, often disputatious, society.”
