A man who escaped from prison in 1979 and eluded authorities for nearly four decades has been arrested in eastern Kentucky, police say.
Billy Burchfield was serving a 16-year sentence for manslaughter in a Georgia jail when he broke out 37 years ago - and he has been on the run from the law ever since.
Police say the 67-year-old stole the identity of his cousin Harold Arnold after he died and was living under that alias when the cops finally caught up with him.
Laurel County Police say they were able to track down Burchfield after receiving a tip from law enforcement in Jackson County, Georgia that he was living as Arnold in the area.
Detectives went to a house in Laurel County on Wednesday night and spoke with the occupant who denied any knowledge of Burchfield.
But after he submitted for fingerprinting, Kentucky State Police fingerprint technicians and the FBI were able to determine that he was a match for Burchfield.
Gilbert Acciardo, spokesman for Laurel County Police Department, said Burchfield had lived without incident in the county since fleeing jail.
'Probably somebody like that is going to fly under the radar,' Acciardo said. 'You (would) have to keep your nose extremely clean and apparently that's what he's done.'
When he was approached by police on Wednesday night, he denied he was a fugitive and continued to deny it after being fingerprinted, Acciardo said.
'He's saying he's not that person,' Acciardo said.
No one answered the phone Thursday at a phone number listed at the London, Kentucky, address where Burchfield was living as Harold Arnold.
Burchfield is being held in Kentucky as a fugitive until he is extradited back to Georgia, Acciardo said.

A family in Lawrenceville said they were attacked by a total stranger just because they were flying an American Flag.
Amina Ahra, 30, was arrested on two counts of simple battery after being accused of attacking a mother and daughter at their home.
Dami Arno told police she was in the garage talking with her daughter when she said Ahra came out of the woods wearing a full Burka, grabbed the flag from off the mailbox and charged at them.
She said she still cannot believe it all happened on American soil.
“A lady walked out of our woods in a full Burka, full attire, stares at us for a minute, then grabs my American flag off of my mailbox and charges towards us with it, just swinging it with all her might,“ the wife and mother said.
"When she came charging , it was kinda like momma bear Instincts kicked in . She had to protect her children," daughter Brittany Arno said.
Arno said when Ahra grabbed the flag; the two women began to fight. That is when Arno's 17-year-old daughter jumped in and her 14-year-old son grabbed the family gun.
Neighbors also ran to help and held Ahra down until Lawrenceville Police arrived.
Mother and daughter said Ahra never uttered a word and seemed possessed.

A Georgia psychiatrist dubbed Dr Death has been charged with murder in the overdose deaths of three patients.
Thirty-six of Dr Narendra Nagareddy's patients died while he was prescribing them painkillers, court documents allege.
Twelve of them died of prescription drug overdoses, post-mortem examinations confirmed.
The doctor could face further charges for at least 30 other deaths, the Henry Herald reports.
Nagareddy - who was arrested in January - allegedly ran a pill mill out of his office in an Atlanta suburb.
In one 11-month period ending in July 2015, he prescribed nearly 500 times the amount of oxycodone prescribed by any other colleague at the Southern Regional Medical Center.
District Attorney Tracy Graham-Lawson said at least 11 of the counts Nagareddy faces include negligence to sign or date prescriptions.
He faces 59 other charges of unauthorised distribution of a controlled substance.

Aiming to appear more mainstream, organizers of the Stone Mountain park rally say they will avoid Klan robes and other garb at the event.
Both rallies were timed to coincide with Confederate Memorial Day, which takes place on Monday.
Organizers say it is rare for two events to occur simultaneously in the same area and it is also rare for rallies to brazenly advertise their racial agenda, says the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

But a group of about 300 counter-protesters at Stone Mountain could be heard chanting, 'Hey hey, ho ho, the KKK has got to go' and 'Black Lives Matter' as they wanted to protest the group of about 30 'pro-white' rally participants.
Organizers for the event initially told park officials that members of the Ku Klux Klans, Aryan Nation sects and other white nationalist organizations would attend the event that was part of a 'push-back against the momentum for removing the Confederate Flag from state and city properties, the Atlanta Daily World reported.



To keep the groups apart, officers in riot gear encircled the Rock Stone Mountain rally participants.
Officials said that counter-protesters fought with police who were trying to prevent them from getting close to the 'pro-white' rally.
The AJC reported that some people who refused to take off their masks were also arrested.
WGCL reported that a man wearing a confederate hat was attacked by counter-protesters and appeared to suffer minor injuries.
Some of the hundreds of counter-protesters present at the park said hat they wanted it to be peaceful event.
Church member Scott Maddox, who decided to leave when the violence erupted, told the AJC: 'I came here for a peaceful rally. When you start throwing rocks… that is not what this is about. We are not gonna be a part of that.'

Authorities say nine people have been charged with murder and another is being sought after a teenager was stabbed to death in a massive, chaotic brawl that involved baseball bats, pipes, knives and other weapons near Augusta.
Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree says the killing of 18-year-old Demajhey Bell on March 18 was “the epitome of a senseless murder.” Bell died Sunday at a hospital.
A woman told sheriff’s deputies that between 30 and 50 teens armed with baseball bats, pipes, knives and other weapons showed up to fight her 15-year-old daughter.
The Augusta Chronicle posted video recorded from bystanders that shows girls fighting, boys attacking people with bats, and an out-of-control Dodge Charger that nearly runs over people.
Authorities said one man’s arm was shattered with a baseball bat.

A Georgia police was gunned down during a drug operation in an Atlanta suburb on Thursday, before cops shot dead the suspect.
Riverdale police officers were assisting Clayton County police with an operation at an apartment complex in Riverdale late Thursday morning, Riverdale police Assistant Chief Michael Reynolds said at a brief news conference.
The officer has been identified as Maj. Greg Barney, who was reportedly not wearing a bullet-proof vest at the time of the incident, WSBTV reported.
He is the fifth cop to be killed in the U.S. in the past 24 hours, and the fifth this week.
Barney was part of a team serving a no-knock drug warrant around 11.15am at the Villages on the River, an apartment complex in the 6600 block of Church Street.
Instead of surrendering, the male suspect ran out a back door.
'He ran approximately 100 to 200 feet from the incident location and we had officers from Riverdale on the perimeter,' Clayton police Chief Michael Register told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
'He confronted one of the Riverdale officers and shot the officer in the torso.'
The Riverdale officer was struck twice by gunfire, police said.
The suspect then fled but was confronted at the front of the apartment complex by another officer.
The suspect was shot and subsequently died. He has not been named.

Arrests were being made across the state Thursday morning as about four dozen current and former state prison guards were told they face drug and bribery charges.
The charges are outlined in eight federal indictments, which have recently been unsealed. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Atlanta plans an afternoon press conference to announce the charges.
The indictments are part of a continuing crackdown to rid the state prison system of
The new indictments allege corruption by guards from Phillips, Macon, Dooly, Hancock, Pulaski and Baldwin state prisons. Five of the guards being charged were members of the Department of Corrections’ tactical team, which works to rid prisons of contraband and control riots.drugs, corruption and contraband cell phones which are being used by inmates to commit crimes outside the prison walls.
According to one indictment, guards allegedly believed they were providing protection to a Locust Grove-area drug dealing who was transporting multiple kilograms of methamphetamine and cocaine. In exchange, the guards received thousands of dollars in bribes, the indictment said.

Georgia Gentleman Arrested After Rape Victim Forced To Call Boyfriend, Instead Called Police

A man who kidnapped a woman and raped her in an adult gift shop parking lot was arrested after his victim outwitted him.
Police allege Robert Giles had plotted his attack before the fact and, after abducting his victim, demanded she call her boyfriend so he could listen to the entire ordeal.
But instead, his victim called police and a quick-thinking 911 dispatcher, Deonte Smith, figured out what was going on and played along, pretending to be the woman’s boyfriend.
Police picked up the 27-year-old Giles at around 4 a.m. Monday during the rape in the Starship Novelties and Gifts car park in Atlanta, Georgia. Police say the dispatcher “might have saved her life.”

The 911 call was “too graphic” to be released to the public, according to police.
“It’s horrific,” Clayton County police Major Joe Woodall told WSB-TV.
“She explained to him [the 911 operator] what the perpetrator had told her, that he was wanting him to listen while she was being raped.”
“They were able to stop it right then and there and snatched him right from the car.”
WSB-TV’s Tom Jones said Smith thought “it was divine intervention that had him in that 911 call center when the call came in.”
Smith explained that if the victim had called just two minutes later, he would have been on a break. He was the only male in the call centrer at the time.

Clarkesville Mayor Terry Greene was injured in a shooting Sunday night at his home, about 85 miles northeast of Atlanta, and he later died at an Atlanta hospital, said Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Nelly Miles.

She declined to release further details, but local media said Greene was shot in the head.

One young student at Georgia Southern University (GSU) is learning the consequences for publicly criticizing the racially-charged protests at the University of Missouri after being reportedly dismissed from her job and having a number of her fellow classmates demand her expulsion.
Emily Faz, a senior at the public university, shared a November 14 Washington Times article on Monday that reported on how some Mizzou protesters and Black Lives Matter activists were upset that the Paris attacks were stealing the media spotlight.
Faz wrote above the link, “I swear if I see this B.S. at Southern I will make you regret even knowing what a movement or a hashtag is, and you’ll walk away with your tail tucked.”
She continued on to say, “The whole black lives matter movement is misguided and out of hand. Maybe no one likes or takes y’all seriously because no one can see past your egotistical bullshit. A man and woman facing murder charges for running over a 65-year-old woman outside a Wal-Mart in suburban Atlanta are suspected in 10 purse snatchings and a kidnapping in parking lots in five Southern states, authorities said on Monday.
Brandon Shawn Smith, 27, and Stephanie Marie Rodriguez, 37, were arrested over the weekend in central Tennessee, according to police in Covington, Georgia, where the Wal-Mart death occurred. They were jailed in Tennessee on Monday awaiting extradition to Georgia.

Authorities say Smith and Rodriguez may have been involved in at least 10 purse snatchings and one kidnapping in recent weeks in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Florida.
“These suspects targeted Wal-Marts and elderly female victims walking alone to their cars in the day and night,” Covington police said in a statement.
Smith and Rodriguez were charged with murder in the Nov. 16 death of Marsha Johnson. Covington police said Smith grabbed Johnson’s purse outside a Wal-Mart and dragged her through the parking lot before running her over with his car multiple times.
Rodriguez was in the car with Smith at the time of the killing, police said.
Covington police spokesman Capt. Craig Treadwell said the two lived from “motel to motel” supporting themselves through purse snatchings.

Home invasion: Mike and Whitney Lash had just returned to their Atlanta home with their two young children - six-month-old Lucy and two-year-old Everson - when four men burst into the house to rob them.

An Atlanta couple have told of the terrifying moment four men pretending to have had car troubles burst into their home and robbed them at gunpoint, shooting the father-of-two in front of his children.
Mike and Whitney Lash had just returned to their house with their two young children on August 16 when the men knocked on their door.
Mr Lash answered the door, and the men said they had just moved down the street but had a flat tire and wanted to borrow a jack, but Mrs Lash felt something was amiss from the start.
'I had a feeling that it was an excuse and we were about to be robbed. Right about that moment I saw them pull the gun on Mike,' she told ABC News.
As Mr Lash saw the gun, he tried to slam the door shut, but two other men suddenly appeared.
Mr Lash was shot three times in the his right leg as he attempted to keep the men out of his house.
The four men then forced their way in.


Arrest: Brandon Jerome Smith, 18, was arrested on Thursday in relation to the armed robbery. Police are still searching for the three others believed to be involved .

Mr Lash believed the gang were going to kill him and started praying.
'Lord, this is, I guess, the moment I will meet you today … if it is not your will, I am ready to stay,' he recalled.
Mrs Lash grabbed the couple's six-month-old daughter, Lucy, and the phone and ran into the yard calling 911.
Their other child, two-year-old Everson, was upstairs sleeping.
'I heard footsteps of someone running and two more shots that were aimed at me and my daughter,' Mrs Lash told ABC.
The intruder then caught up to her and the child and brought them back into the house.

The four men detained the family and proceeded to steal items from the house.
'It just went like a silent movie,' Mr Lash recalled.
'They started walking in and I remember them coming in and out multiple times, just bringing stuff from our house.'

The gang eventually left with the loot.
Mrs Lash and the children were not harmed, and Mr Lash was rushed to hospital to remove the bullets from his leg.
The couple were able to work with police to provide sketches of their alleged assailants.
The sketches lead to the arrest of Brandon Jerome Smith, 18, on Thursday.

Here's an example of distorted reporting. The suspect in a shooting  in Louisiana is described as a "Hitler loving," "drifter," with "a history of mental illness," (as reported by his relatives, who do not love him. Are they psychiatrists?), and the incident occurred "three years after" a shooting at a theater in Colorado. Does that mean the man was guilty no matter what? If he loved Hitler he must be evil. But in case that is not enough evidence, he was a "drifter" and had "a history of mental illness." And if that was not enough, three years ago another man (only men are mass murderers?), opened fire in a theater 1200 miles away. Are theaters no longer safe? Does this indicate a dumbed down journalist and editor? Or was it written for a dumbed down audience? Is the object to slander all persons accused of mental illness? Oh, wait. He is also said to have owned "pubs" and "real estate" in Georgia. Does that mean we should fear people who own real estate too? Pub owners are dangerous? What is the connection between these alleged past acts and the violence? Are all persons with disabilities violent? If this is how crime is reported it is no wonder that Donald Trump appeals to misled voters and taxpayers as he does.

Authorities have released the name of a woman who was fatally shot when officers say she fired at them from the back of a patrol car in downtown Atlanta.
The Fulton County medical examiner's office identified the woman as 25-year-old Alexia Christian.
The incident happened on Thursday afternoon near the Fulton County Courthouse in downtown Atlanta.
Major Darin Schierbaum said police were investigating a call about a stolen car when the two officers saw Christian sitting inside the vehicle in a parking deck.

Schierbaum said Christian was taken into custody and placed in a patrol car.
He said that at one point she fired at least two shots at the officers, and they returned fire, fatally wounding her.

Eyewitnesses said Christian had been handcuffed and must have somehow got one hand free to fire a gun.
Schierbaum said it was unclear how she was able to fire a gun while in the patrol car and that police are investigating whether she had been handcuffed.

Eight former Atlanta public school educators were ordered on Tuesday to serve between one and seven years in prison for their convictions on racketeering charges in one of the nation's largest test-cheating scandals.
The lengthy prison sentences, unusual for educators, contrasted to the treatment of two defendants in the case also found guilty by a jury this month. Both accepted responsibility under a deal with prosecutors that spared them significant time behind bars.

"There were thousands of children that were harmed in this thing," Baxter said during a rancorous hearing.
"It’s like the sickest thing that's ever happened to this town," he later said of the scandal that raised national alarm about high-stakes testing.

A group of former Atlanta educators convicted in a test cheating scandal were locked up in jail Thursday as they await sentences that could send them to prison for years.
In one of the nation's largest cheating scandals of its kind, the 11 defendants were convicted Wednesday of racketeering for their roles in a scheme to inflate students' scores on standardized exams.
They include teachers, a principal and other administrators, who were accused of falsifying test results to collect bonuses or keep their jobs in the 50,000-student Atlanta public school system. A 12th defendant, a teacher, was acquitted of all charges by the jury.
The racketeering charges carry up to 20 years in prison. The convicted former educators are set to be sentenced later this month.
"This is a huge story and absolutely the biggest development in American education law since forever," University of Georgia law professor Ron Carlson said. "It has to send a message to educators here and broadly across the nation. Playing with student test scores is very, very dangerous business."

This is at least the third African-American man to be shot dead by police since last Friday, who either was or seemed unarmed.
DeKalb County police have already faced protests after an officer shot dead a black man who had called 911 when his girlfriend was stabbed by an attacker in his apartment late last year, according to local media.
Alexander said he could “reasonably assume” the person was possibly suffering from mental illness, given his behavior. He declined to identify the victim, but the New York Times reported that he was 27-year-old Anthony Hill.
Alexander said the officer, who had been with the department for seven years, was equipped with a taser at the time of the shooting. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation would handle Monday’s incident, he said.
Police near Denver last Friday shot dead an unarmed man who was a wanted fugitive. On the same day, an officer in Madison, Wisconsin, shot dead a 19-year-old, prompting some 2,000 students to march in the state’s capital on Monday.

Six Georgia House members have jumped to the defense of the former Atlanta fire chief, claiming he was fired for believing in the Bible — and should be reinstated.
In a move that escalates the fight between Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and supporters of Kelvin Cochran, lawmakers led by Rep. Barry Loudermilk this week said the firing robbed the former chief of his religious freedom to speak and write his view.

While the city said Cochran’s religious beliefs had nothing to do with his November suspension and eventual firing last month, he and his supporters claim it was retaliation for a book he published over a year ago that, among other things, equates homosexuality with bestiality.
City officials said the book, Who Told You That You Were Naked? was published without prior approval from the city because it identified Cochran as the city’s top fire official. Cochran also didn’t abide by demands he stop talking about the controversy.

Police responded to the couple's home in the 100 block of Autumn Leaf shortly after 4:15 a.m., where they found the victim, 58-year-old Margaret McCollum. She was taken by helicopter to Atlanta Medical Center.
The GBI will handle the shooting investigation. GBI spokeswoman Sherry Lang said Chief McCollum called 911 to say he accidentally shot his wife twice with his service weapon. It was not immediately known where Margaret McCollum was struck.
