An order to crack down on the illegal sale of 75-cent cigarettes in Staten Island came directly from Police Headquarters, setting off a chain of events that ended in Eric Garner’s death, the Daily News has learned.
Chief of Department Philip Banks — the highest-ranking uniformed cop in the city — sent a sergeant from his office at 1 Police Plaza in July to investigate complaints of untaxed cigarettes being sold in the Tompkinsville neighborhood, a source close to the investigation told The News.
“(Banks) set the whole thing in motion,” the source said.
The sale of loosies had been on Banks’ radar since at least March, when it was discussed at a meeting at Police Headquarters about quality-of-life issues, a police source said.

McFadzen’s boyfriend, Erik Clancy, who also lives in the two-bedroom pad, is outraged, too.
“I can’t imagine them saying [to market-rate tenants], ‘You get this beautiful view of Manhattan behind a giant metal fence,’ ” he said.

“It has come to our clients’ attention that you are exceeding your area of usage,” attorney William Slochowsky wrote on Oct. 28 — days after Q41 held a ribbon-cutting attended by Comptroller Scott Stringer, Rep. Carolyn Maloney and others.
The terrace is part of the building’s sixth-floor pedestal, with wooden dividers providing about eight units with private decks.

Once a stalled condo project, the 17-story building was revived by the city Department of Housing Preservation and Development’s Housing Asset Renewal Program. The city doled out $7.6 million in subsidies and, with Bank of America, provided $28 million in low-interest construction loans to Queensboro.
All but eight of the 117 units in the 41st Avenue tower are “affordable” middle-income pads, with $1,103-a-month studios and two-bedrooms costing as much as $2,186 a month.
The fenced terraces have drawn comparisons to “Poor Doors,” separate entrances for low-income tenants living in luxury buildings.

An "armed offender" entered the Lindt cafe in Martin Place about 9:00am (AEDT) and has held staff and customers hostage for more than seven hours.
Just before 4:00pm, two people were seen running out a front door, one with his arms in the air.
A man wearing a Lindt apron also ran from a side door that was surrounded by heavily armed police.

The girlfriend of slain Auburn University football player Jakell Mitchell had been involved in an argument prior to being shot early Sunday morning, according to the Associated Press.
Ayanna Hughuley, 17, told the AP that Mitchell was having an argument with one man before another man approached him brandishing a weapon. Hughuley said she did not know what the argument was about.
"He just started shooting. Jakell fell on the ground and he tried to get back up and run, and then he fell again. He started shooting at Jakell again while Jakell was on the ground," Hughuley told the AP.
News Leader 9's Elizabeth White reports that 22-year-old Markale Hart, of Camp Hill, AL, was arrested and charged with Mitchell's murder.

The murder suspect has several prior charges on his record in Alabama, including first-degree burglary, first-degree theft of property and various drug charges. Hart also have an arrest history in South Carolina; 2011, Hart was arrested and charged with unlawful carrying of a pistol and failure to appear.

According to the Washington Post, the new Congressional spending bill states that “The bill stops assistance to the Palestinian Authority if it becomes a member of the United Nations or UN agencies without an agreement with Israel. It also prohibits funds for Hamas.” and provides “$3.1 billion in total aid for the country (Israel) plus $619.8 million in defense aid”. It has yet to pass.
Meanwhile, the PA continues its incitement and lies. A recent poll of Palestinians showed that 80 percent supported individual attacks by Palestinians who have stabbed Israelis or rammed cars into crowded train stations and 59.6 percent supporting rocket fire at Israel. Is this a partner for peace?

The U.S. and the EU continually allege that settlements are an obstacle to peace. Have you ever heard them claim the same about PA incitement, or its support of terror, or its refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, or its unwillingness to forego the “right of return”? Maybe, a little bit in passing, but they have done nothing to change their position and hardly condemned them.

This week we are featuring demonstrations by Jonathan Gruber of MIT and Ben Edelman of the Harvard Business School.

Gruber’s taped speeches at conferences of other heath care “experts” bragging about his key role in writing the Act, smarmily suggesting he pulled this one off because the people are “stupid”, and then when called to account by Congressman Darrell Issa, responded: "In excerpts of these videos I am shown making a series of glib, thoughtless, and sometimes downright insulting comments. I behaved badly, and I will have to live with that…"
Still, he refused to say how much his work enriched him. (Credible accounts say about $6 million from the federal and various state governments.)

Either Gruber spent two years lying about his role in writing the law, or he was lying this week in his sworn congressional testimony.

There’s lots of irrationality on campuses and you should learn how to quickly bow down to it. The trustees don’t like to see strong administrators -- they just want their names on buildings and avenues for getting their friends’ dumb kids into your school so genuflect, genuflect, genuflect.

“We are united in our insistence that all lives matter,” read the e-mail, in which she made clear she was strongly behind the protests, writing that the grand jury decisions had “led to a shared fury… We gather in vigil, we raise our voices in protest.”
So, at Smith, black lives matter -- even if the slogan is in support of two thugs whose deaths were connected to their illegal activities (and in Garner’s case ill health). Nor is it significant to these students that black-on-black crimes far exceed deaths by blacks at the hands of police or of white people for that matter. White lives, Asian lives, presumably do not matter.

In a Dec. 5 op-ed, the president of California State University (CSU) claimed if you are “light skinned” you have “significant unearned privilege” and routinely think less of those who are different than yourself.
In her piece, “Privilege at The Beach,” -- referencing the Long Beach area where the school resides -- Jane Close Conoley, a white woman herself, asserts that “light skin color and high income levels may attract significant unearned privilege.” Those who qualify for such privilege, often unknowingly exert distrust and “lower expectations of behavior” on those of another skin color.

We thought that we could skip this course for now after the Duke Lacrosse debacle, but no, we have to keep reminding you guys that when it comes to white male students, it’s the narrative that counts.
Teaching this course this week, we have the president of the University of Virginia who based her actions on a now thoroughly debunked Rolling Stone article.

Remember, above all “responsibility to this community” in college administrator talk does not include responsibility to white men, fair play, or respect for the truth.

One of the demands was to delay exams, like happened at Columbia University Law School.
HLS did not relent, although it did issue some statements of concern and sympathy.
I have it from reliable sources that law students at Harvard are, as we write, being subjected to the oppression of having to take final exams as scheduled.

Few if any of the students complaining talk about the evidence, the forensics, the law that might have justified the grand jury rulings. Instead, it’s all about them and their emotions. Are we training students to think and act as lawyers, or emotional activists?

Michael Brown’s stepfather, Louis Head, shouted, “Burn this bitch down!” after a grand jury decided not to indict Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson in the death of Michael Brown.
The question then asked students to imagine that they are lawyers in the St. Louis County Attorney’s office and had been asked to advise the prosecutor “whether to seek an indictment against Head” for inciting violence. The exam reads:
“[As] a recent hire in the office, you are asked to write a memo discussing the relevant First Amendment issues in such a prosecution. Write the memo.”

It tells you pretty much everything you need to know about the president and his White House and their views toward law enforcement and race relations that Sharpton is, in the words of Politico, “Obama’s go-to man on race.” He has direct contact with White House adviser and First Friend Valerie Jarrett, we’re told. He’s visited the White House at least 61 times since 2009, including meeting one on one with the president, who has publicly praised Sharpton, including sending an aide to read a message at a recent event commending Sharpton’s “dedication to the righteous cause of perfecting our union.” Sharpton was among a small group at the White House when the president announced his nomination of Loretta E. Lynch, the United States attorney for the Eastern District of New York, to become the next attorney general.

Sharpton, then, is a notorious and demagogic figure. He’s anti-cop. He’s anti-Semitic. And he’s an enemy of racial reconciliation, having done incalculable damage to race relations in America. That such a loathsome individual would be allowed into the White House is itself stunning; and the fact that he’s Barack Obama’s “go-to man on race” is shameful and discrediting. These are the depths to which modern liberalism has descended.

It was a habit of Pat Moynihan’s, indeed almost an obsession, to chart the state’s decline.
As a senator, he was especially interested in its representation in Congress. In 1850, New York’s 33 members of the House of Representatives comprised 14 percent of the entire House, and even as late as 1940, when Pat was a boy, the figure was still 10 percent: 45 members out of the total of 435. Today, after the census of 2010, New York has only 27 Representatives in the House—a mere 6 percent of the whole.

Today’s New York has lost the preeminence not only in baseball but also in politics, sending to Washington and placing in Albany a drab lot of pols, to say nothing of the Big Apple’s new mayor. Falling from third to fourth in population was inevitable given the growth of the Sun Belt, and New York will never have more baseball teams than California (it’s now five to two). But maybe the days of Roosevelt and La Guardia, Koch and Giuliani, can be recovered.

Close to 200 people, many from San Francisco’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, blocked streets in and around the city’s Castro district Wednesday morning, rallying against what they described as systemic police violence toward minorities.
The demonstration is the latest action in the Bay Area following the police killings of unarmed black men in Missouri and New York. Wednesday’s group — made up of people of varying ages and ethnicities — amassed at Market Street and Octavia Boulevard, blocking the Highway 101 ramps temporarily before marching down Market.
“We want to stand in solidarity and say the killings have to stop,” said Janetta Johnson, who works as a program director for a transgender justice project in San Francisco. “There’s a lot of fear of police — especially by black people and brown people.”
Organizers chose to rally on the morning before Christmas to disrupt shopping, saying it was “no time for a celebration.”

According to this report "at least" one person questioned the petition. The standards for investigating this matter is curious: “These machines can be seen as a microaggression to Palestinian students and their families and like the University doesn’t care about Palestinian human rights.” and "the machines and their association with the disputed territory could be offensive to Palestinian students." It is not surprising on campuses where irrational arguments by leftist autocrats, Israeli and America hating individuals prevail. Be careful what you wish for. Curious also that there is no sentiment about Muslim beheadings, shootings by Muslim fanatics, and threats to civilians across the globe. Misguided priorities at best.

Just recently (12/23) a man shouting “Allahu Akbar” started destroying Christmas decorations in the city center of Le Mans. When the police arrived he then tried to take a weapon from one of the police officers. This follows numerous recent virulent outbreaks including a driver shouting “Allahu Akbar” who ploughed his Renault Clio into pedestrians at several different locations in the eastern city of Dijon. The outbreaks in just the last month have killed over a dozen people including school children.

Scientists have made primitive forms of artificial sperm and eggs in a medical feat that could transform the understanding of age-related diseases and fertility problems.
Researchers in Cambridge made the early-stage sex cells by culturing human embryonic stem cells under carefully-controlled conditions for a week.
They followed the success by showing that the same procedure can convert adult skin tissue into precursors for sperm and eggs, raising the prospect of making sex cells that are genetically matched to patients.

Skin cells from a woman could only be used to make eggs because they lack the Y chromosome. Those from a male might theoretically be turned into eggs as well as sperm, but Azim Surani, who led the work at the Gurdon Institute in Cambridge, said that on the basis of current knowledge, that was unlikely.

Anderson said the family had returned home from a Christmas party and put the boy to bed in a basement apartment of the two-family home and went upstairs. Another resident smoking on an upper deck saw smoke coming out of the basement at about 11:45 p.m. and alerted the other residents. The only way into the lower floor by then was through a window, the chief said. The mom broke it, crawled in and handed the boy out to his father.

The Jews settled the moon in 2053, just about five years after the end of the Islamic Wars of the 40s, where the Middle East, and Israel, of course, had been obliterated by nuclear weapons.
The two million Jews remaining throughout the rest of the world – less than 100,000 total in all the Islamic countries- banded together and purchased the dark side of the moon, which no other companies or people wished to colonize.
Great transports were arranged via the 62,000 mile space elevator and the Space Shuttle and every Jew on Earth – including anyone who claimed any Jewish heritage whatsoever – left to go to a place where no one could blame them for anything. The Earth rejoiced – happily rid of all Jews. All friends of the Jews had 'disappeared' and there were huge parties throughout all of Sweden and the rest of Europe, Africa, Asia South America, and North America. (Now known as the Northern Alliance of Islamic States after the United States was taken over peacefully in the elections of 2040 by a predominantly Muslim Congress and President, who immediately passed amendments making Islam the main religion of the United States and the world.)

Indeed, tiny Israel and the Diaspora have made more artistic, scientific, and cultural contributions to humanity in 60 years than the Ummah has made in 500 years. Unlike Arabs, Ottomans and their historical subjects, Jews never cultivated empire -- political, religious, or military imperialism.
Calling parts of the traditional Jewish homeland “occupied” territories is a little like calling New Mexico, California, or Scotland occupied. Land lost in war is often lost to history and the enemy. Islamism is now a universal problem, the defeat of same requires a global solution. And if any boots are required on the ground, they need to be worn on Muslim feet. And the West doesn’t need to offer too many incentives, as Netanyahu says, for collective Muslim action. Without a new strategy or plan, the oft celebrated “moderate” Islamic majority will be devoured in short order by the beasts of Muslim hell. Ins’allah!
