Wasting Wisdom and Youth

Who's Sorry Now? NBC Dropped Donald Trump

NBC indicates it does not support the US Constitution. The purpose of the First Amendment, i.e., the concept of free speech is to protect speech you hate. NBC interprets the idea as protecting speech they love and censoring speech they do not like. Bad enough for an individual, but this is one of six major broadcast corporations which keep Americans and others uninformed and misled. Shameful.

[From article]
Mexico is “sending people that have lots of problems, and they are bringing those problems to us. They are bringing drugs and bringing crime and their rapists,’’ Trump asserted during his campaign launch earlier this month.
NBC said it will now no longer air the annual Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, which were joint ventures between NBC and Trump.
Trump has already said he wouldn’t be appearing on the network’s show “The Apprentice” because of his presidential bid.
But NBC said the spinoff “Celebrity Apprentice” will continue without him.

Updated: NBC Bans Broadcasting Trump Pageant, US Rep. Joins Boston Columnist In Personal Attacks; NASCAR Moves Meeting

Posted June 30, 2015 9:09 PM ET; Last updated July 6, 2015 8:17 PM ET

NBC indicates it does not support the U.S. Constitution. The purpose of the First Amendment, i.e., the concept of free speech is to protect speech you hate. NBC interprets the idea as protecting speech they love and censoring speech they do not like. Bad enough for an individual, but this is one of six major broadcast corporations which used to keep Americans and others informed. Now they mislead and confuse. Shameful.

Glad to see that U.S. Rep. Capuano uses personal attacks to help inform voters in his district. Just what is needed in a one party state. Keeping voters and taxpayers dumbed down helps incumbents keep their jobs.

[From article]
“I know plenty of people like that, and at any local bar, you can find some loud-mouth jerk at the end of the bar who’s willing to say such stupid, idiotic things,” the Somerville Democrat told Boston Herald Radio “Morning Meeting” hosts Hillary Chabot and Scott Ferson. “The fact that he’s running for president, I actually think if I was a Republican running for president I’d be embarrassed that he was in the field — and being taken seriously by some people.”
[. . .]
Trump’s comments on Mexican immigrants are not only unnecessary, Capuano said but “insulting,” especially given Trump has refused to back down from them.
“For him to double down and say, ‘I meant it’ — fine, you meant it, but now you go down as an official jerk in my book,” he said .
[. . .]
He is exciting on some level, he’s a celebrity and he does say crazy, stupid things. He will attract some people.”

It is perplexing that journalists who ridicule billionaires, speak for everyone else. How do they know what others think? Atkins says "Few would argue that Trump is anything but a fringe candidate. It pains me to even waste good newspaper ink writing about him." Really? How does she know what Trump thinks? Instead of answering claims about criminals entering the United States committing crimes Americans won't commit, journalists and politicians join in personal attacks. Immigration is only one issue which these two powerful groups refuse to discuss facts and policy so that voters and taxpayers can make responsible decisions to keep themselves safe. Using polling numbers this early is lame at best. In 2013 the NYC mayoral election was won by about 20 percent of eligible voters. The issue is a dumbed down population which is a product of misguided journalists who use personal attacks (like this one) and cute talk instead of factual arguments to keep voters informed.

[From article]
Few would argue that Trump is anything but a fringe candidate. It pains me to even waste good newspaper ink writing about him.
Still, it seems Trump honestly thinks he speaks for a large swath of Americans yearning for a candidate who speaks truth to power and who won’t let political correctness stand in the way. Who he actually speaks to is a tiny segment of the populace who mistakes bigoted drivel for frankness and egotism for authority. Remember, he was the king of the anti-Obama birther movement. Everything about him, including his professed business acumen and even his hairstyle, is artificially inflated for effect.

The presidential hopeful placed ahead of perceived front-runner Jeb Bush in a new aggregated 'poll of polls' with 13.6 per cent support compared to the former Florida governor's 13.3.
The rise comes as public figures and businesses continue to admonish Trump because of the comments saying that those crossing the border from Mexico illegally were 'rapists'.
Former Republican candidate Mitt Romney told CNN Saturday that the businessman 'made a severe error in saying what he did about Mexican-Americans'.
Trump defended the remarks, and used an interview on Fox and Friends Saturday morning to take a dig at fellow presidential hopeful Marco Rubio.

Tom Brokaw

Brokaw told his story in a well produced video essay.
Said he wanted to share his story so that others may learn from his experiences.
One element that he emphasized was that he had substantial resources unlike most people.
In addition he had a large supportive family, three loving adult daughters, grandchildren and a loving wife. It is usually not recognized how important that is.
He explained by way of his doctors that he ignored much of his pain and that the doctors need to know that. They told him to tell them.

Black Association Sues Comcast, NBC, Al Sharpton For Bias

The National Association of African-American Owned Media alleges that Sharpton and other advocates have been bought off.

[From article]
The plaintiff objects that the only fully black-owned channel picked up by Comcast is the Africa Channel, and that entity is owned by former Comcast/NBCU exec Paula Madison, who "was directly involved in putting together the sham MOUs and obtaining government approval for the Comcast acquisition of NBC Universal, thus creating a serious conflict of interest."
Other black channels are said to be "window dressing," with black celebrities as "fronts" when they are "white-owned businesses" that are run by friends or family of Comcast executives.
The lawsuit goes on to say that Comcast made large cash "donations" to obtain support for its acquisition. The money includes $3.8 million to Sharpton and his National Action Network. The money, it's charged, was meant to pay Sharpton to endorse the NBCU deal and divert attention away from discrimination. As for Sharpton's MSNBC gig, the complaint says, "Despite the notoriously low ratings that Sharpton's show generates, Comcast has allowed Sharpton to maintain his hosting position for more than three years in exchange for Sharpton's continued public support for Comcast on issues of diversity."
[. . .]
The lawsuit seems to count Sharpton's reported $750,000 annual salary at MSNBC as part of the $3.8 million and leverages past criticism of the noted civil rights leader that's rooted in him allegedly turning an eye and forgoing boycotts and protests on corporations upon receiving monetary contributions to the National Action Network.

NBC News Anchor Earns $10 million A Year, And Exaggerates The News

Brian Williams, up to his neck in dysentery-contaminated water as the corpses go floating by
[From article]
Next to the Iranian nuclear program or Putin's neo-Soviet expansionism, the question of whether NBC News "managing editor" Brian Williams is a self-aggrandizing liar or a mentally ill fantasist is a relatively minor matter, notwithstanding that he is the very embodiment of the strange antiquated assumptions of network news - that because a chap looks like a 1950s department-store mannequin he's your go-to guy for economic analysis and foreign policy.
As to the subject at issue, my general view of "personal stories" (including my own) was summed up by Mel Brooks on stage a few decades back reminiscing about his life. After one especially uproarious anecdote, he said, "I swear every word is true. Well, no. The mildly funny stuff is true. The mezzo-mezzo stuff is mostly true. But the really funny stuff is entirely invented." That formula applies to the dramatic stuff, too. As you tell a story over the years, as Brian Williams did with his RPG-hit-chopper shtick, it gets too honed, too sharp.
[. . .]
We're told NBC News execs disliked Williams' "version" of events and never permitted it on their own airwaves. Yet one week ago he told NBC viewers:
The helicopter we were traveling in was forced down after being hit by an RPG.
Assuredly there's been some turnover in NBC News since 2003. So maybe nobody working on the program now was working on it then.
[. . .]
Yet today Brian Williams' survival is the way to bet - because the obsolete format of Big Three "network news" is a dinner-theatre exercise that now bears so little relation to real news that Williams' ability to project the aura of authority and integrity trumps the reality that he doesn't actually have any. If you get your news from old-school "network news", you're not actually getting any news, you're watching a guy 'cause he has great hair. So getting it from a delusional narcissist is only taking it to the next level.

Olfactory News At NBC

[From article]
Brian Williams did it all for the soldiers, you see. His chopper whoppers were patriotic acts. “This was a bungled attempt by me to thank one special veteran,” he explained.
In a similar vein, Anthony Weiner’s sexting was really just a misunderstood celebration of the technological sophistication of smartphones, and Bill Clinton’s dalliance with Monica Lewinsky was a selfless way to promote that great American company the Gap.
What Williams’ lie was about was what lies are always about: No one who actually scored the winning touchdown on the high-school football team misremembers it as sitting on the bench. The term “fish tale” does not mean you mistakenly tell people you caught a sickly 8-ounce catfish when actually you snagged a 95 pound monster marlin.

Updated: Judicial Watch, NBC Anchor Not Prosecuted For Gun Violation, Due To DC Prosecutor Discretion

Posted December 16, 2015 9:22 PM ET; Last updated January 22, 2015 8:17 PM ET

NBC News Anchor David Gregory

[From article]
In an affidavit, the investigator wrote that “there is probable cause that the offense of possessing a ‘high-capacity’ magazine was committed in the District of Columbia. Therefore your Affiant requests the issuance of an arrest warrant for Gregory, David Michael.”
Despite the request, D.C. attorney general Irvin Nathan declined to prosecute in the case. He said that his office “determined to exercise its prosecutorial discretion to decline to bring criminal charges against Mr. Gregory, who has no criminal record, or any other NBC employee based on the events associated” with the broadcast.
[. . .]
Legalinsurrection.com’s William A. Jacobson wrote: “The short version is that the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department warned NBC News that it could not possess an actual high-capacity magazine, but NBC News went ahead and did it anyway. The MPD recommended a warrant for Gregory’s arrest, but that request was nixed by the D.C. Attorney General Irvin Nathan because — my paraphrase — Gregory was just too nice a guy and had no other criminal intent.”

[From article]
For those of you who are new to the blog, or who have not been paying attention, Legal Insurrection filed a FOIA suit against the District of Columbia seeking records related to the non-prosecution of David Gregory and NBC News despite their clear violation of D.C.’s gun law by possessing a 30-round ammunition magazine.
We are represented by Judicial Watch, which has done a wonderful job. It’s a real credit to them that they work hard to dig out the truth not only on big issues like IRS targeting, but also smaller issues like how draconian D.C. gun laws are not enforced against the famous and connected D.C. elites.
In the Gregory case, NBC News was warned by the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department that possession of the magazine was illegal, and that NBC News should use a photo not the real thing, but NBC News ignored the warning and used it on Meet the Press.
[. . .]
Despite the clear violation of law, the D.C. Attorney General, Irvin Nathan, decided not to prosecute Gregory or any NBC News personnel.
That’s not how the average person is treated in D.C., where the technicalities of the gun laws are enforced with obsessive prosecutorial vigor.
And that’s the point. We never wanted David Gregory prosecuted for violating the ridiculous gun law provision, we wanted public officials to be held accountable for the unequal application of the law.
When a photo surfaced of Nathan at a charity event with Gregory’s high-powered lawyer wife, which Nathan said was his only contact with her, it came to symbolize the special treatment.

Ugly Competition At NBC's Meet The Press; How Sharpton Got a TV Show

[From article]
OWS supporter Al Sharpton was hired primarily to enable a corporate merger at NBC. But more on that later as we join the description of Chuck Todd desperately grasping to replace Tim Russert the instant he died in 2008:
[. . .]
Between 2008 and 2010, Comcast’s corporate foundation donated more than $3 million to 39 minority groups that wrote letters to federal regulators in support of the NBC deal.
[. . .]
And in 2009 and 2010, Comcast gave $155,000 to an organization founded by the Reverend Al Sharpton, who ended up endorsing the merger.
[. . .]
At MSNBC, which Comcast also owns, Sharpton landed a talk show. A spokeswoman for Comcast says the company is a “long-standing supporter” of minority groups and had nothing to do with Sharpton’s hiring.

In June, Lauer extended his lucrative $20 million-a-year deal with NBC News to remain a “Today” co-host through 2016, following speculation that he would leave the show in the wake of the storm over the brutal departure of Ann Curry in 2012.
As part of the deal, NBC agreed to pay for Lauer to chopper out to the Hamptons, where he has a 40-acre horse farm in Water Mill and a nearby mansion, reportedly worth $15 million, in which he lives year-round with his wife, Annette Roque, and their children.

Three TV Networks Fear Using Word "Terrorist"

[From article]
The Big Three networks steered clear of labeling the Islamist group ISIS "terrorists" on their evening newscasts on Friday. Instead, ABC's World News and CBS Evening News labeled the genocidal radicals "militants." NBC Nightly News used the more benign "rebels" in their coverage of the group's latest attacks on the Kurdish part of Iraq
[. . .]
On Thursday, the MRC's Dan Gainor pointed out that the Big Three networks have followed a similar pattern with regard to the Islamic extremist group Hamas: "ABC, CBS and NBC journalists referred to Hamas as 'militants,' 'fighters' or 'soldiers' 13 times more often than they called them 'terrorists.' Clinton Child Paid $600,000 a Year by NBC

[From article]
Chelsea Clinton earned an annual salary of $600,000 at NBC News before switching to a month-to-month contract earlier this year, sources with knowledge of the agreement told POLITICO.
[. . .]
When Clinton joined NBC, many media critics chafed at the network’s decision to employ a former first daughter with no experience in journalism. The New York Post referred to Clinton as “just another spoiled, aimless child of rich, successful parents chauffeured through adulthood by Mommy and Daddy’s connections.”
Yet Clinton’s appointment did not mark the first time NBC Universal had hired children of high-ranking politicians. In 2009, it hired George W. Bush’s daughter Jenna Bush Hager to serve as a correspondent on the “Today” show. In 2011, it hired Sen. John McCain’s daughter Meghan McCain as a contributor on MSNBC.

Friends of Gregory and even his wife were interviewed by a psychologist commissioned by NBC to find out how the host of the flagship Sunday morning show might relate to audiences better.
The Washington Post reported, “Last year, the network undertook an unusual assessment of the 43-year-old journalist, commissioning a psychological consultant to interview his friends and even his wife.

Jay Leno Too Funny, Too Old?

[From article]
“The main thing is to get people from 18 to 42 watching your station, and for 18 to 40, [Leno] is considered oldie,” Mason continued, on Leno’s release. “Obama had nothing to do with it; it’s all the age, it’s all the age range. The whole idea is to get the young people to watch, and they assume the 20-year-olds are buying everything and if you’re over 50 you’re buying nothing. They’re too stupid to realize that in fact the opposite is true. How many times do you see a 23-year-old person with a Rolls Royce?”
