Southerners Push Back Against Removal Of Confederate Statue

[From article]
Backlash against a plan to remove prominent Confederate monuments in New Orleans has been tinged by death threats, intimidation and even what may have been the torching of a contractor’s Lamborghini.
For now, at least, things have gotten so nasty, the city hasn’t found a contractor willing to bear the risk of tearing down the monuments. The city doesn’t have its own equipment to move them and is now in talks to find a company, even discussing doing the work at night to avoid further tumult.
Initially, it appeared the monuments would be removed quickly after the majority-black City Council on Dec. 17 voted 6-1 to approve the mayor’s plan to take them down. The monuments, including towering figures of Gens. Robert E. Lee and P.G.T. Beauregard, have long been viewed by many here as symbols of racism and white supremacy.
The backlash is not surprising to Bill Quigley, a Loyola University law professor and longtime civil rights activist in New Orleans who’s worked on behalf of a group demanding the monuments come down.
The South has seen such resistance before, during fights over school integration and efforts in the early 1990s to racially integrate Carnival parades in New Orleans.
“Fighting in the courts, fighting in the legislature, anonymous intimidation,” Quigley said. “These are from the same deck of cards that are used to stop all social change.”

Brain Eating Amoeba Found In Louisiana Waters

[From article]
Naegleria Fowleri, a brain-eating amoeba that thrives in warm water, from another drinking water supply in Louisiana.
Naegleria Fowleri was detected during routine tests on Aug. 5 at a utility district in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, roughly 80 miles from New Orleans. A press release was issued on Monday, Aug. 17.
[. . .]
Humans are infected when water containing the amoeba travels through the nose and migrates to the brain, destroying the tissue.
"We want to emphasize that the water is completely safe to drink. The amoeba cannot survive your stomach acid and is harmless when consumed in this manner," the DHH said in a recent press release.
[. . .]
The Terrebonne Parish site is the third regional site to test positive for the amoeba within the two months.
The brain-eating amoeba was detected late July in Ascension Parish, roughly 25 miles from Baton Rouge.

Louisiana Boy, 9, Gives Cards, Coins To Keep Police Officers Safe

[From article]
Nine-year-old Jayden Witsell is an aspiring law enforcement officer. But he's got a little something extra with his uniform that he's made his mission to share with real law enforcement officers.
"It's a St. Michael's coin," Witsell told an officer. "If you keep it in your pocket, or in your unit, it will keep you safe everywhere you go."
A little more than a month ago, Jayden and his mom started riding around with envelopes that say "Police Lives Matter." In them, are cards with a hand-written 'thank you,' plus the coin. The goal is to give them to any officer, deputy or trooper they spot.
"He just come to me and said, 'Mom there's too many bad things going on in the world. People just don't have respect for law enforcement officers and I want to do something nice for all the police officers," said his mother Angelique Witsell.
Jayden said, "To me, police lives just matter."

Deadly Bacteria Released At Tulane University Lab

[From article]
A dangerous, often deadly, type of bacteria that lives in soil and water has been released from a high-security laboratory at the Tulane National Primate Research Center in Louisiana. Officials say there is no risk to the public. Yet despite weeks of investigation by multiple federal and state agencies, the cause of the release and the extent of the contamination remain unknown, according to interviews and records obtained by USA TODAY.
The incident has raised concerns that bacteria from the lab may have contaminated the facility's grounds and though initial, limited tests didn't detect it, some officials are pressing behind the scenes for more action, records show. The safety breach at Tulane's massive lab complex 35 miles north of New Orleans is the latest in a recent series of significant biosafety accidents at some of the most prestigious laboratories in the country where research is performed on bacteria and viruses that are classified as potential bioterror agents.
[. . .]
"Human error is always the first explanation you should consider for a laboratory accident," Ebright said. "The easiest way to transfer something from one place where it's supposed to be, to another where it isn't supposed to be is by a worker moving from one place to the other."
Sloppy biosafety practices can result in pathogens being tracked out of labs on shoes, coats, gloves, hands or other materials that weren't properly sterilized before being removed, he said.

Louisiana U.S. Senator Challenged on Residence

[From article]
A week ago, Maness, a Tea Party-backed retired Air Force colonel, informed the Louisiana secretary of state of inconsistencies in Landrieu’s residency status. The Washington Post looked into the issue and found she listed her parents’ home in New Orleans to qualify for the ballot, but listed her home on Capitol Hill in Washington as her home address.
"The Constitution, Louisiana law and common sense say candidates for Senate have to live here when they qualify — all of the evidence shows that Mary Landrieu doesn't live here," Maness said in a statement.
"Election Code empowers our district attorneys to object to a candidate's qualification when presented with evidence,” he continued. “There is no question that compelling and overwhelming evidence has now been presented. The most appropriate way to resolve this is to have the law upheld by the proper authorities."

Murder Suicide, Exposed Fake Marriage For Citizenship

[From article]
The events leading up to the murder and attempted suicide are not entirely clear, but Sheriff Stasi noted that Rogers’ daughter, Kimberly Ann Scott-Rogers, was testifying before a grand jury at the time her father was shot. Stassi told The Times-Picayune that the marriage between Scott-Rogers and Hodgkinson was a ploy to acquire citizenship for the British citizen, with whom Rogers was involved in a sexual relationship.
The Advocate reports that Rogers had fled the United Kingdom in the 1990s after he was accused of sexually abusing children at his dance studio. Hodgkinson and another student at the dance studio followed Rogers to the United States, where the three of them continued to live together for more than 20 years.

Missing FL Teen Girl Found in LA With Sex Offender

[From article]
Myers was found guilty of child molestation in March 1999, according to court records from Forsyth County, Ga. He was sentenced to serve five years in prison and 10 years’ probation, which he twice violated, the court records show. He returned to prison in May 2010 and was released in February 2012.
[. . .]
A teacher at an Arizona prison was alone in a room full of sex offenders before being stabbed and sexually assaulted by a convicted rapist, according to documents obtained by the Associated Press about an attack that highlighted major security lapses at the facility.
The attack occurred Jan. 30 at the Eyman prison’s Meadows Unit, which houses about 1,300 rapists, child molesters and other sex offenders. The teacher was administering a high school equivalency test to about a half-dozen inmates in a classroom with no guard nearby and only a radio to summon help.

Non Hollywood History of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow

This historical account of Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker mentions the role the prison system had in creating the monster that was Clyde Barrow. Think of all the police and civilians who were murdered by this gang after horrific abuse suffered by Barrow while in prison for theft during the Great Depression. Dehumanizing criminals by police continues in 2013, where police refer to suspects as "dirt bags," and "scum bags."

Parker with 1932 Ford V-8 B-400 convertible sedan.

Clyde Barrow in 1926, aged 16

[From article]
According to John Neal Phillips, Barrow's goal in life was not to gain fame or fortune from robbing banks, but to seek revenge against the Texas prison system for the abuses he suffered while serving time.
[. . ]
After Barrow was released from prison in February 1932, he and Ralph Fults assembled a rotating core group of associates and began a series of small robberies, primarily of stores and gas stations; their goal was to collect enough money and firepower to launch a raid of liberation against Eastham prison.
[. . .]
On January 16, 1934, Barrow finally made his long-contemplated move against the Texas Department of Corrections as he orchestrated the escape of Raymond Hamilton, Henry Methvin and several others in the infamous "Eastham Breakout" of 1934.[26] The Texas prison system received national negative publicity from the brazen raid, and Barrow appeared to have achieved what Phillips describes as the burning passion in his life: exacting revenge on the Texas Department of Corrections.
[. . .]
Historical perspective
Through the decades, many cultural historians have analyzed Bonnie's and Clyde's enduring appeal to the public imagination. E.R. Milner, an historian, writer, and expert on Bonnie and Clyde and their era, put the duo's enduring appeal to the public, both during the Depression and continuing on through the decades, into historical and cultural perspective. To those people who, as Milner says, "consider themselves outsiders, or oppose the existing system," Bonnie and Clyde represent the ultimate outsiders, revolting against an uncaring system. "The country's money simply declined by 38 percent", explains Milner, author of The Lives and Times of Bonnie and Clyde. "Gaunt, dazed men roamed the city streets seeking jobs ... Breadlines and soup kitchens became jammed. (In rural areas) foreclosures forced more than 38 percent of farmers from their lands (while simultaneously) a catastrophic drought struck the Great Plains ... By the time Bonnie and Clyde became well known, many had felt the capitalistic system had been abused by big business and government officials ... Now here were Bonnie and Clyde striking back."

MA No Longer Most Corrupt State

Shady business: Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin (right) and his attorney arrive at court in February. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of taking bribes and free trips in exchange for city contracts.

These rankings are are based on the number of convictions, which is misleading. It shows that the maintenance mechanisms are working. But in Massachusetts the criminal justice system does not address government corruption. Crime families now control police agencies of the state and the federal government's offices in Massachusetts. It is not possible to fight government corruption in Massachusetts. One major obstacle is the influence of Harvard University within the state. Education dominates the Massachusetts economy. Harvard University dominates education. Harvard University graduates and affiliates are elected and appointed to many offices in the local, state and U.S. government offices in Massachusetts. The corrective mechanisms are directed downward only. Police concentrate on street crime. State police protect elected officials from arrests conveniently withholding documents and records. The FBI frames innocent civilians and provides the identity of civilians who report crimes to criminals who execute them. Massachusetts is underrated in this survey due to faulty reasoning. The only time corruption is addressed is when the government prosecutors are dragged screaming by the Boston Herald which exposes what they can, fighting the Democratic criminal class which controls the state.
