Belgium Official Reports Muslims Danced In Streets Celebrating Terror Attacks

[From article]
In a interview yesterday, Belgium’s Interior Minister Jam Jambon charged that a large part of the country’s Muslim population celebrated terrors attacks:
AFP reports:

"A significant section of the Muslim community danced when attacks took place," Jambon said in an interview with the Flemish-language De Standaard newspaper.
The Belgian minister also accused Muslim residents of Brussels' largely immigrant Molenbeek neighbourhood of attacking police during an operation last month to arrest a suspect in connection with the deadly attacks in Paris last November.
[. . .]

Shades of Donald Trump charging that Muslims in the US celebrated after 9/11, a charge that has lacked a lot of corroborating evidence. Jambon’s portfolio presumably includes police and security forces, so perhaps he has access to more information than Trump.

Brief History Of Belgium

Brussels After Terror Attack

[From article]
There is an old joke about Belgium that goes something like this:
The problem with Belgium is that there is almost no unity. The Walloons hate the state because it is not French enough. The Flemish hate the state because it is not Dutch enough. The Muslims hate the state because it is not Islamic enough. Only the Jews love Belgium. The only thing that unites the others is they all hate the Jews.
Like all decent jokes this one has more than a kernel of truth, though I added the part about Muslims -- in its original form it dealt only with the Walloons, the Flemish, and the Jews. But since Muslims now make up 6% of Belgium’s population (much more than Jews at about 0.5%) and their views of the state and Jews mirror that of the other two major groups, the joke still works -- though it is clear that Belgium’s increasingly threatened Jews love it a lot less today. But the jest mostly points to Belgium’s fundamental existential problem, which now threatens to create a failed state in the heart of Western Europe, and therein a sanctuary for the worst radical Islamists.
I was reminded of the joke and Belgium’s precarious predicament not only because of the recent terror attacks there, but because I’ve been reading Bernard Cornwall’s take on the most famous of many battles to take place in Belgian territory, Waterloo. Belgium was the creation of Waterloo and the Napoleonic struggle that it culminated. Created in 1830, the new state was intended (at the time) to box in France, but Belgium also came to be seen also as a buffer state between France and an increasingly powerful and aggressive Germany. The cobbled together state was divided roughly equally between Dutch-speaking Flemish areas in the north, and French-speaking Walloons in the south, with a few German speakers near that border.
For a time, it seemed like this arrangement -- regardless of what the people of the new state felt about it -- was beneficial to European peace, though that was largely an illusion. The supposed century of peace between Waterloo and 1914 was actually marked by several European wars, including one between France and Germany (the Franco-Prussian War) though that fight did not involve Belgium.
Arguably, in the end, the creation of Belgium made things worse. Britain’s guarantee of Belgian neutrality forced it into World War I at the ultimate cost of nearly one million dead, and its empire -- a decision that still provokes debate and rancor today. Britain’s entry into the war guaranteed a costlier and bloodier conflict for all parties and set the stage for World War II. Belgium also became a trap for the British in that war, because the French, concerned about offending the Belgians, left the Maginot Line uncompleted and easily outflanked. French and British forces north and west of the Maginot did not deploy into Belgium before Germany’s May 1940 offensive for fear of violating Belgian neutrality, forcing them to meet Nazi tanks without prepared defenses when they finally rushed forward. Nonetheless, a competently led and hard fighting French army actually stopped the German panzers cold at the Belgian town of Gembloux, but when the French line collapsed to the south at Sedan the British and French forces in Belgium became trapped, forcing the Dunkirk evacuation.

After World War II, Belgium’s geopolitical raison d’etre expired. Western powers effectively tried to paper this problem over by making Brussels the headquarters of both the European Union and NATO. In essence, they used Belgium again as a convenient “neutral” headquarters site, while at the same time propping up the Belgian elites in the capital who were and are the primary party with an actual interest in preserving the country.
The people of Belgium have never been and are not invested in the concept of a Belgian nation. In reality the state is the failed artifact of early 19th-century power politics, and this fundamental weakness makes Belgium today a problematic security risk for the West. Flemish areas speak Dutch and pretend as if the Walloons don’t exist, and vice versa. As a consequence, the Belgian federal authorities are weak, confused and riven by factional and linguistic conflict.
Still, as Belgium is a wealthy country mostly made up of comfortable bourgeois citizens, it likely could have continued in this way indefinitely. Separatism is mostly discussed in wealthier Flemish areas, but it has been much easier (and in the end probably less expensive) to put up with the status quo than go through the messy -- and possibly violent -- process of separation, which the poorer French-speaking areas do not want since they are subsidized by their unhappy Dutch-speaking countrymen.
What nobody counted on was a third force made up of unhappy Muslims who now constitute a substantial and exponentially growing minority. Unlike their complacent French and Dutch-speaking neighbors, many Muslims are quite keen to impose their will on their countrymen through societal disruption, political agitation, and violence. Belgium’s weak system of federal and local control which features the abdication of responsibility by authorities in both realms, allowed the growth of practically sovereign ghettos like the Molenbeek area of Brussels that is now at the center of European-based Islamist terror. Successive “mayors” of Molenbeek ignored or encouraged (via fashionable political correctness) Islamic separatism, and/or failed to act when confronted with the reality of violent jihad.
American and European counter-terrorism officials have reportedly been stunned by the sloth and incompetence of their Belgian counterparts, whom an American official famously likened to children. This is actually too kind, since these Belgian functionaries are certainly not innocent children but grown men and women who consciously have failed to act in a normative and reasonable fashion to protect their nation, in large part because they have no emotional or political interest in doing so.
Belgium unfortunately is a poor excuse for a country, made up of people who would mostly rather not be Belgian. And yet, just as European powers two centuries ago found it necessary to create Belgium, they (and we) ought to now see it in our mutual immediate interest to preserve the state. Left on its own, Belgium could very possibly become a true failed state as the pressures of radical Islamists fracture the already tenuous Belgian system, turning it into an even more inviting area for Islamist radicals and further weakening European defenses against Islamist takeover.

Belgium Police Clash With Conservative Civilians

Right wing demonstrators protest at a memorial site at the Place de la Bourse in Brussels, Sunday, March 27, 2016. In a sign of the tensions in the Belgian capital and the way security services are stretched across the country, Belgium's interior minister appealed to residents not to march Sunday in Brussels in solidarity with the victims.

[From article]
Belgian riot police fired water cannon to disperse far-right football hooligans who disrupted mourners at a shrine for victims of the Brussels attacks, as police arrested several suspects in a series of new raids.
In scenes that compounded a week of grief for Belgians, black-clad protesters shouting anti-immigrant slogans moved in on the makeshift memorial at Place de la Bourse where hundreds of people had gathered in a show of solidarity.
Under-fire Belgian authorities meanwhile detained four terror suspects after carrying out 13 raids as they seek to round up a web of jihadists with links to the carnage in the Belgian capital and to attacks and plots in France.
The clashes between the far-right demonstrators and police underscored the tensions in Belgium after Tuesday's Islamic State suicide attacks on the airport and the metro system in which 31 people died and 340 were wounded.
[. . .]
As Belgium struggles to come to terms with the tragedy, recriminations continue over whether the authorities could and should have done more to prevent the carnage, as the links to the November Paris attacks by IS grow clearer by the day.
Police carried out 13 raids Sunday across Brussels and the towns of Duffel and Mechelen to the north, the federal prosecutor said, questioning nine people and holding four for further inquiries.
In the latest piece in the puzzle of the jihadist cross-border networks, police arrested a 32-year-old French national in Rotterdam Sunday on suspicion of planning a terror attack, Dutch prosecutors said, following a raid carried out at the request of French authorities.

Brussels Police Shoot Man With Bomb, Belgium, Germany and France Arrest More Terror Suspects

A bomb robot and a member of a bomb squad inspect the suspicious package at the scene moments after the dramatic stand-off.

[From article]
A woman was taken hostage by a terror suspect in a dramatic stand-off at a tram stop in Brussels today.
Witnesses told how heavily armed anti-terror police shot the man in the leg because he was carrying a rucksack they believed contained a bomb.
As police moved in the suspect then grabbed a woman and pulled her to the ground.
In heart-stopping footage captured from a balcony above where the drama unfolded, the man can be seen letting a little girl no older than five go as officers get closer.
The clip then shows specially trained anti-terror police in bullet proof vests gently coaxing the frightened girl to safety as the target grabbed the woman.
[. . .]
The dramatic scenes come as:
Seven were arrested during police raids in Brussels on Thursday night;
Among those held was convicted ISIS recruiter Reda Kriket;
The 34-year-old French national had been in the 'advanced stages' of planning an attack in France. He was found with heavy weapons and explosives in his apartment;
Two men were held in Germany suspected of being linked to the Brussels bombers;
Claims surfaced that Paris terror suspect Salah Abdeslam was plotting a machine gun massacre over Easter before he was arrested.
Today’s shootout, in the Schaerbeek area of north Brussels, began with two explosions, which triggered panic in a city still reeling from Tuesday’s bloodbath which left 31 dead and 270 injured.
[. . .]
A group of women having their hair done at Meshairs hair salon over the road from the tram stop told of the moment they saw officers get the little girl away from the man.
Sabina, a hairdresser, told MailOnline: ‘I heard all this shouting and commotion outside. I looked out the window and saw the police approach, crouched down.
‘The man saw them and grabbed the woman and the child and took them hostage. He let the child go and pulled the woman to the ground and lay on top of her.
‘Then the police shot him in the leg. He was then pulled away by police. The woman was screaming and crying.’
The suspect was ‘neutralised’ and dragged off to a waiting police car, witnesses added.
[. . .]
With the scene cleared, a bomb robot rolled in and lifted the rucksack, which a bomb disposal expert then inspected.
Photographs taken shortly afterwards showed smoke rising from the backpack, which may have been blown up in a controlled explosion.
Another video clearly showed a man wearing an orange jacket coaxing the child to safety before she was carried away to safety.
Today’s shooting took place in the Brussels suburb of Schaerbeek – the scene of a number of anti-terror raids in the last few days.
Najim Laachraoui, the master bomber who blew himself up at Zaventem airport on Tuesday, killing 14, and whose DNA was found on the suicide vests in Paris, lived in Schaerbeek.
DNA traces of Balal Hadfi, one of the Paris bombers, were also found in a flat in Schaerbeek along with a cache of explosives in December.
[. . .]
One witness, speaking about today's raid, told local TV station RTBF: 'I heard two explosions, they were shooting. I opened the window and saw a man lying near the tram stop.
Another told La Libre newspaper: 'The police ordered him to show his hands, remove his jacket. They said that if he did not comply, they would use their weapons.'
The Mayor of Schaerbeek, Bernard Clerfayt, later confirmed that 'a person was intercepted by police and suffered a slight leg injury'. He added there had been several small explosions linked to bomb disposal work.
Sources at the scene told MailOnline a man inside the flat carrying explosives may have been about to launch a suicide attack.
It is thought two unmarked cars pulled up outside a house, after which two explosions were heard - one of which is understood to blown open the door. There is speculation that one of the explosions may have been a stun grenade.
[. . .]
It comes as French President Francois Hollande said this afternoon the Islamist militant network behind attacks in Paris and Brussels was being destroyed, but there remained other cells that continue to pose a threat.
'We know that there are other networks. Even if the one behind the attacks in Paris and Brussels is in the process of being wiped out, a threat continues to remain,' Hollande said ahead of a meeting with former Israeli President Shimon Peres.
Meanwhile, there have been separate reports today of another raid in a Belgian town 60 miles south of Brussels.
[. . .]
Three men of foreign origin were arrested at an 80-bedroom hotel in Dinant and police are searching the evacuated building for explosives.
The town's mayor Richard Fournaux said it was too early to say whether the operation was linked to the bombings earlier this week.
Two suspect packages have been found – one in a car near the building, which was hosting a business conference, and one in a hotel room.
Bomb disposal experts are examining both packages.
[. . .]
Today's dramatic raid comes after seven people were arrested in Belgium and Paris overnight by masked anti-terror police across Europe in connection with the Brussels massacres and a new terror plot.
Armed police swooped on properties in the Schaerbeek and Jette districts of Brussels and arrested a total of six people, who are thought to be connected to Tuesday's airport and Metro bombings.
German police have also arrested two more people with suspected links to the attackers while a new suspect in the Brussels plot, 28-year-old Syrian Naim al-Hamed, has also been identified.
It comes as it was revealed that the Frenchman arrested in the northern Paris suburb of Argenteuil last night was a convicted ISIS recruiter who was in the 'advanced stages' of planning an attack in France.
[. . .]
It comes as Belgian police admitted a catastrophic police blunder allowed Paris bombings logistics chief Salah Abdeslam to remain at large for more than three months.
A dedicated beat officer gave information about the whereabouts of Abdeslam to superiors on December 7 and urged them to pass it on to the country's anti-terrorist police. But the confidential report was inexplicably not passed onto the federal bureau.
[. . .]
In Germany, it emerged that police had arrested two people they suspect are linked to the Islamist suicide bombers.
It said one of the men, arrested on Wednesday near Frankfurt, received two mobile phone messages shortly before the bombings that included the name of Khalid El Bakraoui, the man Belgian police say blew himself in a Brussels metro station.

Palestinians At Brussels Memorial, Tear Up and Cover Up Israeli Flag With Palestinian Flag

[From article]
Video emerged Thursday of a hijab-wearing woman tearing up an Israeli flag at a makeshift memorial for victims of the Brussels terror attacks.
French RTL television captured the disturbing images of the incident at the central Brussels landmark Place de la Bourse, The Jerusalem Post reported.
The woman is seen lifting a Palestinian flag and then ripping an Israeli flag to shreds.
She then hides the pieces under other flags and walks off.
[. . .]
In another video posted on Facebook, a man is seen removing a Palestinian flag from a pole and then using it to cover an Israeli flag on the ground at a memorial site.
Among those decrying the video was one who posted: “This is disgusting. I was going to ask why no one stops them, foolish question. There is no stopping these attacks now. We will see more and more of them.”

[From article]
This is the shocking moment a woman removes an Israeli flag from a Brussels memorial and rips it up, before hiding the pieces away underneath another flag.
A French-language station captured the footage at the shrine set up at Brussels' Place de la Bourse.
During the clip, which is just over one minute long, a woman wearing a hijab, a brown coat and a scarf picks up a Palestinian flag from the candle-lit vigil and takes it over to an Israeli flag.
She bends down to pick up the blue and white Israeli flag and begins ripping it up, before placing the pieces beneath another flag, which looks as though it could be the symbol of Georgia.
The woman then walks off out of shot, with not one of the many onlookers approaching her to question her over her shocking actions.
It is unclear whether she has placed the Palestinian flag in the Israeli flag's place, however you can see that she is no longer carrying it when she walks away.
The French-language station does not refer to the women's actions and instead the discussion that can be heard is about the official memorial marches and ceremonies in Paris.
This shocking video is not the only time an Israeli flag has been tampered with at the memorial.
Another clip shows a man, wearing beige trousers, a black hooded jacket and gloves, walking into the middle of the candle-lit memorial.
He picks up a Palestinian flag and places it over the Israeli flag so it can no longer be seen. Once again, there are many onlookers but although some people can be heard saying 'no, no, no', nobody takes action.

Brussels Ignored Warning From Turkey About Terrorists

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

[From article]
Belgian officials ignored warnings last June that one of the brothers suspected of blowing himself up in Tuesday’s deadly Brussels attacks was a terrorist, Turkey's president said Wednesday.
Ibrahim El-Bakraoui, a petty criminal born and raised in Brussels and suspected of being the bomber who blew himself up at Zaventem Airport, killing at least 11, was nabbed crossing into Turkey from Syria nine months ago, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said. Turkish officials said they told their counterparts in Brussels of his likely involvement with ISIS, which has claimed credit for Tuesday’s attacks.
A Turkish official said Dutch authorities allowed Bakraoui to go free because Belgian authorities could not establish any ties to terrorism.
[. . .]
Bakraoui was reportedly deported back to Europe, choosing to go to The Netherlands before making his way back to Brussels. Police who raided his apartment Tuesday found a note left by the Islamic fanatic in which he said he wrote of his desperation.
"I don't know what to do. I'm looked for everywhere and I might even find myself in a jail cell," read a portion of the letter, recited by Belgian federal prosecutor Frederic Van Leeuw at a Wednesday news conference.
[. . .]
Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders told reporters Sunday, two days before the attacks, that Abdeslam told Belgian authorities "he was ready to restart something from Brussels."
[. . .]
More than 470 people have left the tiny European country to become foreign fighters as of Octber 2015. That's fourth in Western Europe overall, but first in fighters per capita. At least 118 of those 470 have returned, according to the Soufan Group analysis.

The security services knew, with a high degree of certainty, that attacks were planned in the very near future for the airport and, apparently, for the subway as well.
Despite the advance warning, the intelligence and security preparedness in Brussels, where most of the European Union agencies are located, was limited in its scope and insufficient for the severity and immediacy of the alert.
As far as is known, the attacks were planned by the headquarters of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Raqqa, Syria, which it has pronounced as the capital of its Islamic caliphate.

History Lessons Remain Unlearned

Neville Chamberlain (1869-1940)

[From article]
Immigration is the new “No Nukes/Save the Whales” movement, only with more body bags.
After the mass murder committed by Muslims in San Bernardino, which came on the heels of the mass murder committed by Muslims in Paris, Donald Trump proposed a moratorium on Muslim immigration.
Explaining the idea on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” he talked about how Muslim immigration was infecting Europe: “Look at what happened in Paris, the horrible carnage. … We have places in London and other places that are so radicalized that the police are afraid for their own lives. We have to be very smart and very vigilant.”
Trump’s reference to London’s no-go zones was met with a massive round of sneering, which is what passes for argument in America these days. Jeb! said Trump was “unhinged,” Sen. John McCain called him “foolish,” and former vice president Dick Cheney said Trump’s remarks went “against everything we stand for and believe in.” (Based on Trump’s crushing primary victories, Cheney is no longer qualified to say what “we” believe in.)
[. . .]
UK Daily Mail: ‘TRUMP’S NOT WRONG — WE CAN’T WEAR UNIFORM IN OUR OWN CARS’: Five Police Officers Claim Donald Trump Is Right About Parts of London Being So ‘Radicalised’ They Are No-Go Areas
The Sun: ‘THERE ARE NO-GO AREAS IN LONDON’: Policemen Back Trump’s Controversial Comments
UK Daily Express: ‘TRUMP IS RIGHT!’ Police Say Parts of Britain Are No-Go Areas due to ISIS Radicalisation.
Then, in January of this year, Trump talked specifically about the Muslim invasion of Brussels on the Maria Bartiromo show. “There is something going on, Maria,” he said. “Go to Brussels. … There is something going on and it’s not good, where they want Sharia law … There is something bad going on.”
[. . .]
Indignant Belgians took to Twitter, the Times reported, “deploying an arsenal of insults, irony and humor, including images of Belgium’s beloved beer and chocolate.” Liberals have gone from not understanding jokes to not understanding English. When Trump talked about unassimilated Muslim immigrants demanding Sharia law, I don’t think he was knocking Belgium’s beer and chocolate.
[. . .]
All this would be perfectly normal if we were talking about an earthquake or some other natural disaster — something humans have no capacity to prevent. But Muslims pouring into our countries and committing mass murder isn’t natural at all. It’s the direct result of government policy.
[. . .]
When people are killing in the name of their religion, it’s not an irrelevancy to refuse to keep admitting more practitioners of that religion.
But this is the madness that has seized Europe and America — a psychosis Peter Brimelow calls “Hitler’s revenge.”
Apparently, what we have learned from Hitler is not: Don’t kill Jews. To the contrary, the only people who openly proclaim their desire to kill Jews are … Muslims.
What we’ve learned from Hitler is not: Don’t attempt to seize hegemonic control over entire continents. The only people vowing to conquer the world are … Muslims.
And what we’ve learned from Hitler is not: Beware violent uprisings of angry young men. The only hordes of violent, angry young men are, again … Muslims. (And Trump protesters.)
But instead of learning our lesson and recoiling with horror at this modern iteration of Nazism, we welcome the danger with open arms — because the one and only lesson we’ve learned from Hitler is: DON’T DISCRIMINATE!

Belgian Reporter Assaulted On Air By Germans in Germany

RTBF journalist Esmeralda Labye (pictured left) was describing the atmosphere at the Cologne carnival not far from the main station (right) when the attack happened.

[From article]
A Belgian journalist has told how drunken German yobs whispered 'would you sleep with me tonight' into her ear and then sexually assaulted her live on air.
Esmeralda Labye had been unaware of the young men making obscene gestures behind her back as she reported live from the Cologne carnival - where more than 2,000 police had been drafted in following multiple sexual assaults in the city over New Year's Eve.
But while the New Year's Eve assaults have been largely blamed on a mob of young migrant men, the assault on Ms Labye was carried out by Germans.
[. . .]
‘When I started my broadcast at 1.14pm, two or three men monopolised attention. I didn’t see them, as I was focusing on my live broadcast and they were behind me.
‘I got a kiss on the back of the neck. It was women’s day in Cologne, and there was a lot of kissing. In this context I wasn’t worried, so I continued my report.
[. . .]
‘Almost immediately, a young German sang in my ear: “Would you sleep with me tonight?” Then I felt two hands rest on my shoulders.
‘Later, I could see on the footage that the person behind me mimed an obscene gesture – something that shouldn’t have been on camera. He was mimicking sexual intercourse a number of times.
‘I could clearly see on my left a man made a finger to the camera. Many times even. I thought that, logically, there would be no problem, given the large police presence.'
The broadcast lasted for a total of 90 seconds, after which Ms Labye waited a couple of seconds to allow those in the studio to thank her before she went off air.
‘It was at that moment that one of the three men around me touched my breasts,' she revealed.
‘I lost my temper. Knowing we were no longer live, I turned around and told them in English: "You did that twice, not once! Don’t touch me, don’t touch me!".
'The three drunks didn’t seem to understand why I was angry, but they left without a word.'

Police And Soldiers in Belgium Enjoyed Orgy While City Was On Terror Lockdown

These Guys?

[From article]
Soldiers and police in Brussels held an orgy while their colleagues hunted for terror suspects, according to reports.
Eight soldiers and two female police officers allegedly engaged in lewd acts at a police station in the neighborhood of Ganshoren, just north of Molenbeek, where officers were hunting for suspects in connection with the November 13 Paris attacks, Belgian media outlets La Dernière Heure and De Standaard reported Tuesday. Brussels was on lockdown at the time of the alleged incident.

Chief Rabbi Of Brussels, "No Future for Jews in Europe."

Rabbi Avraham Gigi

[From article]
The chief rabbi of Brussels told an Israeli radio station Monday that there is no future for Jews in Europe, The Jerusalem Post reports.
Rabbi Avraham Gigi described the environment of fear in the Belgian capital since the city has been in lockdown following police terror raids across the country.
“There is a sense of fear in the streets, the Belgians understand that they too are targets of terror. Jews now pray in their homes [as opposed to at synagogues] and some of them are planning on emigrating,” Gigi said.
He explained, “Since Shabbat the city has been paralyzed. The synagogues were closed, something which has not happened since World War Two. People are praying alone or are holding small minyanim [small prayer groups] at private homes. Schools and theaters are closed as are most large stores and public events are not permitted. We live in fear and wait for instructions from the police or the government.”

"Christian State" Issues Muslim-like Threats

Will the thousands of threats to kill Americans, Jews and to destroy Israel, made by Iranian officials and Muslim clerics be investigated too?

[From article]

A menacing letter from the group called ‘Christian state’ has been sent to the major Belgian mosque Attadamoune. It threatens all Muslims will be killed, and their businesses destroyed.
The anonymous letter – printed out and full of spelling mistakes - said that “no mosque and none of your businesses will be safe” and threatened that “brothers [Muslims] will be slaughtered like pigs and crucified as our Lord converts their souls.”

The document was found in the mosque’s mailbox by Jamal Habbachich, one of the local Muslim leaders and the president of Molenbeek’s mosque association, and he is set to address the government about the issue.
[. . .]

The Attadamoune mosque is considered a key Muslim institution in the Molenbeek district, an area near the Belgian capital that is connected with the attacks in Paris on November 13 that left 130 people dead.
Last week, Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said that the government may close “certain radical mosques” in the Molenbeek district over fears that it was the place where the Paris attacks were orchestrated.

Police In Belgium Arrest Six Pakistani Born UK Citizens

Transport: Arrests were made from these converted ambulances

[From article]
Six British men were arrested in Belgium yesterday after they were spotted in three old ambulances near Brussels while the city was in a fullscale terror alert.
A heavily armed anti-terror unit swooped on the group close to an Esso petrol station regularly used by Salah Abdeslam – the fugitive terrorist still on the run from the Paris massacres.
Six armoured trucks and a police car moved in after the converted vehicles parked up in a rest area beside the E411 highway in Bierges south-east of the capital around 2pm.
Last night the six Pakistani-born UK nationals were being questioned while officers continued to search the ambulances – two Fiats and a Mercedes with British plates.
Brussels remained in lockdown following an intelligence warning of an imminentParis-style attack on the Belgian capital.
[. . .]
Police are probing any link to Islamic State after using old ambulances was revealed to be a hallmark cover tactic used by the terror group.
Tanks and masked special forces squads were deployed to guard all major landmarks in the Brussels region while the manhunt continued for Abdeslam, 26.
The British men, who do not speak French, were said to be co-operating with detectives and have been fingerprinted to check for possible matches.
Specialist officers scouring the ambulances recovered clothes, food and money inside, raising suspicions they may have been heading for Syria.
[. . .]
A suspected terrorist plot linked to a converted ambulance was foiled in Hanover, Germany, on Wednesday night.
French intelligence officials are reported to have warned their German counterparts about a potential attack, sparking a string of security alerts linked to the vehicle spotted near the football stadium where the national team’s game against Holland was cancelled .
Speaking about yesterday’s arrests of Britons, a police commissioner in Belgium said: “Shortly before 14.00 hours, we found the presence of three old ambulances, now transformed into vans, on the highway rest area.
On board were persons of foreign origin, one of who is known to the UK police. These are British citizens of Pakistani origin. They do not speak French but they co-operate.”
Four men were arrested near the Jewish Museum in the city centre where a terror attack took place last year.
In France troops were guarding water facilities around Paris today as the fear of a chemical attack intensified.

Euthanasia By Belgium Doctors Without Consent Studied

[From article]
A study published this month in the Journal of Medical Ethics examined the “deliberate” euthanasia of patients in Belgium without their explicit, voluntary consent as required by law.
The study’s author, Raphael Cohen-Almagor, a professor of philosophy and ethics at the United Kingdom's Hull University, found that life-ending drugs were used “with the intention to shorten life and without explicit request” in 1.7 percent of all deaths in Belgium in 2013.
In 52.7 percent of these cases, the patients were 80 years of age or older. The decision to euthanize was not discussed with the patient in 77.9 percent of the cases because he/she was comatose, had dementia, or “because discussion would have been harmful to the patient’s best interest,” according to the study.
Belgium passed the Euthanasia Act in 2002, which states that only voluntary euthanasia is legally permissible.
“At the heart of this legislation is the free will of the patient who asks for euthanasia,” Cohen-Almagor noted. “It is worrying that some physicians take upon themselves the responsibility to deliberately shorten patients’ lives without a clear indication from the patients that this is what they would want.”
[. . .]
Although end-of-life decisions should be discussed with the patient’s relatives, the statement noted that the final decision is “made by the care team and not by the relatives.”

Snorting Cocoa

Belgian chocolatier Dominique Persoone snorts cocoa powder off his Chocolate Shooter in his factory in Bruges, February 3, 2015. When Belgian chocolatier Dominique Persoone created a chocolate-sniffing device for a Rolling Stones party in 2007, he never imagined demand would stretch much beyond the rock 'n' roll scene. But, seven years later, he has sold 25,000 of them. Inspired by a device his grandfather used to propel tobacco snuff up his nose, Persoone created a 'Chocolate Shooter' to deliver a hit of Dominican Republic or Peruvian cocoa powder, mixed with mint and either ginger or raspberry. "The mint and the ginger really tinkle your nose," the 46-year-old said in his chocolate factory in the medieval city of Bruges. "Then the mint flavor goes down and the chocolate stays in your brain."

Belgium Soldiers Guard Jewish Sites Responding to Threats

[From article]
Europe remained on high alert as soldiers were deployed alongside police in Belgium to protect Jewish buildings and the head of Europol warned that further terrorist attacks could not be ruled out in the wake of the murder of 17 people in Paris by Islamist gunmen last week.
The move to guard potential targets in Antwerp’s Jewish quarter on Saturday was the first time in three decades that Belgian troops have been used to bolster police ranks. It follows the deployment of French soldiers following the attacks in Paris.
