Holocaust survivor, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, prolific author and outspoken activist Elie Wiesel died Saturday at the age of 87. Wiesel was perhaps best known for his major role in promoting Holocaust education, and for perpetuating the memory of the Holocaust in the post-World War II era with his memoir “Night,” based on his experience as a teenager in the Auschwitz concentration camp.
Eliezer “Elie” Wiesel was born on September 30, 1928 in the Romanian town of Sighet, to Sarah and Shlomo Wiesel.
[. . .]
The Wiesel family’s lives were seriously disrupted in 1940, when Hungary annexed Sighet and all the Jews in town were forced to move into one of two ghettoes. In May 1944, the Nazis, with Hungary’s agreement, deported the Jewish community of Sighet to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. The teenage Wiesel was sent with his father Shlomo to the Buna Werke labor camp, a sub-camp of Auschwitz III-Monowitz, where they were forced to work for eight months before being transferred to a series of other concentration camps near the war’s end.
The malnourished and dysentery-stricken Shlomo Wiesel died after receiving a beating from a German soldier on January 29, 1945, several weeks after he and Elie were forced-marched to the Buchenwald camp. Wiesel’s mother Sarah and younger sister Tzipora also perished in the Holocaust. He would later recount those and other events in his 1955 memoir “Night.”
After the war, Wiesel was sent with other young survivors by the French Jewish humanitarian organization Oeuvre de Secours aux Enfants to an orphanage in Écouis, France. He lived for several years at the home, where he was reunited with the only surviving members of his immediate family: his older sisters Beatrice and Hilda.
In 1948, the 20-year-old Wiesel pursued studies in literature, philosophy and psychology at the Sorbonne, but never completed them.
[. . .]

In 1948, he translated Hebrew articles into Yiddish for Israel’s pre-state Irgun militia. Wiesel visited the nascent State of Israel in 1949 as a foreign correspondent for the French newspaper L’arche. He was subsequently hired by the daily Yedioth Ahronoth as its Paris correspondent, and also worked for the paper as a roving correspondent abroad. He also covered the 1961 trial of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann for the New York-based Yiddish newspaper The Forward.
It was during his time in Paris that Wiesel was said to have studied with a mysterious and renowned Jewish scholar known simply as Monsieur Chouchani (also spelled Shushani in certain sources) after meeting him at a synagogue. Wiesel described Chouchani in an article in Yedioth Ahronoth as “a modern legend,” and after the man’s death, went on to pay for his tombstone in Montevideo, Uruguay, and wrote his epitaph: “The wise Rabbi Chouchani of blessed memory. His birth and his life are sealed in enigma.”
Despite or perhaps because of the major traumatic impact the Holocaust had on his life, Wiesel did not write about those experiences until encouraged to do so during a conversation with French Nobel Laureate for Literature Francois Mauriac, in 1954. The original version of his first memoir was over 800 pages, written in Yiddish and entitled “Un di velt hot geshvign” (“And the World Remained Silent”). He wrote a much shorter version in French, published in 1958 as “La Nuit” and it was translated into English as “Night,” two years later. Despite, its eventual popularity, “Night” sold less than 2,000 copies in its first 18 months in the United States. However, the book did attract much attention among reviewers and created a higher media profile for Wiesel; it has gone on to sell more than six million copies.
[. . .]
The book now appears in 30 languages.
“Night” would form the first part of Holocaust memoir trilogy that would include “Dawn” and “Day.” All told Wiesel wrote more than 40 works of nonfiction and fiction, including “A Passover Haggadah” and “Wise Men and Their Tales: Portraits of Biblical, Talmudic, and Hasidic Masters.”
In 1955, Wiesel moved to New York to cover the United Nations. During his time in the city he was hit by a taxi, requiring a prolonged convalescence in the hospital. Following his recovery, Wiesel applied for permanent residency and in 1963 became a U.S. citizen; this was the first citizenship he held since becoming stateless during the Holocaust.
A longtime bachelor, Wiesel eventually met his wife to-be, divorced Austrian Holocaust survivor Marion Rose, in New York. They married in Jerusalem in 1969. Marion served as the English translator for Wiesel’s subsequent books.
The world-renowned Holocaust survivor received numerous awards and honors over the years,
[. . .]
and he was knighted as Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Perhaps the highest honor of all was the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986 for his role in speaking out against violence, repression and racism. Wiesel was also the recipient of over 100 honorary doctorates, and received France’s distinguished Prix Medicis for his 1968 book “A Beggar in Jerusalem,” describing the Jewish response to the reunification of Jerusalem following the Six-Day War.
In Israel, [. . .] Shimon Peres [. . .] would later award Wiesel the President’s Medal of Distinction in 2013.
Despite his life experiences, Wiesel was not without a sense of humor, which he displayed, for example, when given the World Jewish Congress’ Theodor Herzl Award by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2013. “There were two great men in Europe at that time: Herzl and Freud,” Wiesel was quoted as saying, by The Forward. “Luckily they never met. Just imagine Herzl knocking on the door of Dr. Freud: ‘I had a dream.’ Freud would have said, ‘Sit down. Tell me about your mother.’”
In addition to his writing, Wiesel enjoyed a second career as an academic. From 1972 to 1976, he was professor of Judaic Studies at the City University of New York. Thereafter, he was Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities at Boston University, and a member of both its philosophy and religion departments. Wiesel was Henry Luce Visiting Scholar in Humanities and Social Thought at Yale University (1982-83), and visiting professor of Judaic studies at Barnard College of Columbia University from 1997 to 1999.

He moved to the U.S. in the 1950 and in 1978, President Jimmy Carter appointed Wiesel as Chairman of the President's Commission on the Holocaust.

It can be said, however, that Elie Wiesel was best known for his role in keeping alive the memory of the Holocaust and for promoting Holocaust education. Over the years, he spoke of these subjects innumerable times, before countless audiences, around the globe.
In 1978, U.S. President Jimmy Carter appointed him as chairman of the Presidential Commission on the Holocaust (later renamed the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council), a role in which he served until 1986. In that capacity, Wiesel became a major, driving force behind the establishment of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. His words, “For the dead and the living, we must bear witness” are engraved in stone at the entrance to the museum.
In 1986, after receiving the Nobel, he and his wife established the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity to combat intolerance and injustice around the world through dialogue in general, and via programs for youth. The following year Wiesel served as a witness during the trial of war criminal Klaus Barbie in Lyons, France, during which he spoke of his bitter experiences in Auschwitz.
In 2003, Romanian President Ion Iliescu appointed Wiesel to lead the International Commission for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania. This group, later referred to as the Wiesel Commission, was tasked with setting the record straight regarding the involvement of Romania’s fascist Iron Guard regime in Holocaust atrocities against Jews, Roma and others. The Romanian government recognized the commission’s findings, as published in 2004, including the assessment that between 280,000 and 380,000 Jews and over 11,000 Roma died during World War II as result of policies advanced by the Romanian authorities.
Following the commission’s work, the Romanian government also decided to mark October 9 – the day in 1941 that Romanian Jews were deported to ghettos and forced labor camps – as the country's annual day for commemorating the Holocaust.
In 2012, Wiesel gave back the Grand Cross Order of Merit award he had received from Hungary in 2009, in protest of what he called the “whitewashing of tragic and criminal episodes” that happened in that country during the Holocaust.
[. . .]

Also in the latter years of his life, Wiesel was in the headlines for an entirely unrelated reason: as one of the more prominent victims of Wall Street financier Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi scheme. The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity lost $15.2 million it had invested with Madoff, and the Wiesels lost their own life's savings, reported to be around $1 million. The foundation later managed to raise about one-third of the money it lost to Madoff from sympathetic donors, and to continue to function. When asked to describe Madoff by a New York Times journalist, Wiesel said, “Psychopath – it’s too nice a word for him.”
Elie Wiesel was noted during his lifetime for using his celebrity appeal to promote Holocaust remembrance, but also to speak out on various political issues, including instances of genocide around the world. In September 2006, for example, he appeared with Hollywood actor George Clooney before the UN Security Council to bring attention to the humanitarian crisis in Darfur. In 2007, the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity issued a letter criticizing the denial of the Armenian genocide at the hands of the Ottoman Turks; it was signed by Wiesel and 52 other Nobel laureates.
Wiesel was concerned about human rights in general, serving on the International Council of the Human Rights Foundation and he spoke out against South African apartheid, Argentina’s policy of “disappearing” people during its Dirty War, and the Bosnian genocide during the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s. In 2010, he came out publicly against the Netanyahu government’s decision to deport 400 children of migrant workers from Israel. Weisel was an advocate when it came to a host of Jewish issues, and in particular was stridently pro-Israel. Following a visit to the Soviet Union in 1965, he wrote about the plight of Soviet Jews in a book called “The Jews of Silence,” and spoke out in favor of the struggle to allow them to emigrate; he was also a vocal supporter of the immigration of Ethiopian Jews to Israel. In April 2010, he took out advertisements in four major newspapers, criticizing the Obama administration for pressuring the Netanyahu government to halt construction in Jewish neighborhoods located across the Green Line in East Jerusalem. Wiesel repeated that tactic in 2013 when he took out a full-page ad in The New York Times calling on the U.S. administration to demand the total dismantling of the nuclear infrastructure in Iran because that country had called for Israel’s destruction.

Wiesel (circled in red) was a victim of the death camps in Poland, including Buchenwald and Auschwitz.

In a 2012 interview with Haaretz, Wiesel said he would bequeath the archive of his writings to Boston University, where he had taught for decades. Wiesel is survived by his wife Marion, their son Shlomo Elisha Wiesel, and his stepdaughter Jennifer and two grandchildren

Facebook, Twitter Censor Conservative Writers Who Support Donald Trump

It is shameful and embarrassing but indicative of how schools, colleges, universities, law schools and journalists have failed to curb the dumbing down of American youth. The idea of free speech is to protect speech that you hate. Speech that you like needs no protection. If speech offends, the solution is more speech not less. That presupposes that speakers and offended listeners are searching for truth. Propaganda cannot withstand scrutiny. Propagandists use censorship to silence exposing their lies. No matter how many people object, if speech is legal it is protected. But under the growing misguided efforts of psychiatry to bring about the therapeutic state, snowflakes who are offended by speech can silence rational criticism and discourse. Shame on university administrators, school teachers, law schools and journalists for remaining silent.

This act of censorship by the social media giant comes on the tails of Breitbart Tech editor Milo Yiannopoulos’ short suspension from Twitter, which occured after he took to the platform with anti-Islamic remarks.

Twitter Appears To Censor Popular #GaysForTrump Hashtag

Conservative gay journalist Milo Yiannopoulos (pictured below with Anne Coulter and above with Donald Trump) is an outspoken conservative writer, who was suspended from Twitter Wednesday morning while on a tour that took him to a crowd outside the Pulse nightclub in Orlando.

[From article]
Twitter has come under fire for allegedly censoring conservative gay voices after Breitbart journalist Milo Yiannopoulos was suspended and a popular pro-Donald Trump hashtag apparently disabled from the site's auto-complete system.
Yiannopoulos, who has been particularly critical of Islam in the wake of Sunday's shooting, in which Omar Mateen killed 49 people and injured 53 more in an Orlando gay club, had his account disabled Wednesday, Heat Street reported.
That same day, Twitter apparently blocked the hashtag #GaysForTrump from appearing automatically when typing.
The account run by Yiannopoulos, who is currently on a 50-week, 60-date U.S. college tour in which he espouses anti-feminist, anti-Islam views, went down Wednesday morning, a number of users reported.
Both #FreeMilo and #FreeNero (his Twitter handle) trended as word got out, and several fans objected to what they saw as censorship for his anti-Islamic views.
User @JohnCardillo said: 'Hey progressives, a gay man was silenced by Twitter for calling out radical Islam's killing of gays. #FreeMilo #FreeNero'
Another user, @UKamboj, wrote: 'Milo, a gay journalist, defended the LGBT community and is now suspended by the homophobes at @twitter #JeSuisMilo #FreeMilo'
And @exsacerdotal complained: 'Oh dear, @Nero has been suspended because he's strayed out of the confines of the LGBT zoo.'

Controversial: Yiannopoulos is infamous for his anti-feminist and anti-Islam views.

Yiannopoulos's account was restored by midday Wednesday, but with just 10,000 of his previous crowd of 275,000 followers. His follower list was restored by 3:30pm, Heat Street said.
Although the reason for Yiannopoulos's suspension isn't known at present, one user said that it was due to a focused campaign of complaints by Arabic Twitter users.
According to @Unspectateur, 'A Muslim with 1.2M followers tweeted out a call to action which led to the temporary suspension of @Nero.'
And @Cernovich identified the same account as being the origin for 'mass spam reports' against Yiannopoulos's account. The account is in Arabic.
On Sunday he wrote an article for Breitbart titled 'The Left Chose Islam Over Gays. Now 100 People Are Dead Or Maimed In Orlando.'
In it, he asked: 'How many more innocent gays need to die before we admit that America, and the world, has an Islam problem?'
He added: 'I don’t mean a "radical Islam" problem or an "extremist Islam problem." Violence is not the extreme in Islam any more: it’s the norm.'
Yiannopoulos was notified of the suspension in an interview with The Gavin McInness Show, in which he said he wasn't surprised.

'It was probably a mass reporting,' he said. 'Arabic Twitter got hold of me today... if they mass report enough I think it triggers some kind of automatic thing.'
Yiannopoulos had previously complained loudly about Twitter removing the 'blue tick' that signifies an official, 'verified' account, Business Insider reported in January.
The day before Yiannopoulos's suspension, the social media site came under fire for apparently removing #GaysForTrump from its auto-complete function, Breitbart reported.
Ordinarily when typing out a hashtag, Twitter will provide suggestions, with the options narrowing down with each letter typed.
But typing out '#GaysF' does not provide #GaysForTrump as an option.
User @PunishedSage made the observation Tuesday, adding that #LGBTQHatesTrumpParty - a less popular tag, according to data gleaned by Breitbart - was appearing in the auto-complete form.
'Gays for Trump' is a movement started by Chris Barron, president of the now-defunct gay conservative group GOProud, CNN reported.
As of Wednesday evening, neither option appeared when typed - however, Twitter was also not offering anything for the word '#Gay' at all.

Twitter accused of censorship after it suspends account of gay conservative writer Milo Yiannopoulos for 'anti-Islam views' and blocks GaysForTrump hashtag
Milo Yiannopoulos, Breitbart Tech journalist, was suspended Wednesday
His account was later reinstated, but initially without his 275,000 followers
Some said it was censorship, but he believes it was an automated system
He said that Arabic Twitter users had flooded the site with complaints
Yiannopoulos has written about how the world has 'an Islam problem'
The hashtag #GaysForTrump was also apparently disabled on the site
It does not automatically appear when typing, unlike many other hashtags

The Women for Trump Facebook group was set up as a voice for women who “are fed up with loser politicians who won’t stand up for our freedom or for the USA.”
The WFT Facebook page currently has 27,000 followers and is one of the most popular Trump fan pages.
Today the Women for Trump Facebook page organizer received this warning from Facebook.
The message said Facebook “has received many reports from your page” and to, “Please review your posts for reasons that you have violated our terms.”
Facebook then threatens to suspend the page—
[video embedded]
This is the only post they can think of that could possibly be offensive?
And it was a video from a cable news show.
Now the page is being threatened with suspension.
UPDATE: This came from an IT professional:
I researched the suspension notice you posted an article about. This may be a spear phishing attack. The domain is registered to a proxy registration service in Panama, and leads to a server containing nothing but the attack form… I posted a warning on the Facebook page itself. This is a time sensitive matter, please contact them.
UPDATE: Brooke from Facebook wrote us with this statement.
Here is what we’re sending to media outlets who are requesting comment. Please feel free to use it in your update!
“After looking into this matter, Facebook was able to determine that the page administrator received this message as part of a phishing attempt. The message did not come from Facebook.”

College Professor Perplexed At Lack of Skills of Students

[From article]
On the other hand, a grave disservice has been done to those students who are interested in learning and have genuine academic credentials. Because businesses can no longer be certain that college degrees indicate anything meaningful, they insist that their new employees take additional classes to obtain various certifications. Often these workers have to spend inordinate amounts of money and time to increase learning because the university degree has been so devalued in the first place. Dumbing down education results in many victims.
Low IQ levels, total indifference to learning, no curiosity, specious logic, no in-depth training in critical thinking and writing – these are the real-life factors that face college instructors. Low grades are frustrating for many students, because they truly don't know what they don't know.
Often I will be told that I am the rare instructor who insists on correct formatting for a research paper even though this is an integral item. One student gave me a paper for which she had received an "A," and on the very first page, there were syntax and grammar errors that the other instructor had apparently ignored. Is it any wonder that so many students think they are writing "A" papers when no one has actually pointed out their substandard writing? They were never taught basic English grammar in the first place, so how can I hold them responsible?
Too many instructors are reluctant to do their job because (a) the errors are so numerous that the work involved in correcting them is monumental, (b) they fear student retaliation, (c) often the chair of a department will not back up an instructor's decision, and (d) the status of teachers is so poor that we are viewed as mere facilitators rather than purveyors of knowledge.
And yet, as college instructor Daniel J. Smith wrote in May 2015, "the expectation of high grades without merit is on the rise." He explains why bumping up a grade leads only to "reducing the opportunity for people to experience the life satisfaction that comes through earned success," whether in the academic or business world. I concur. But again, I ask: How can I possibly grade these students? And how can we stop penalizing students who actually belong in college when the very degree they are seeking is so devalued?

Women in Comedy Documentary Forgot Some Super Stars

Pretty good documentary about comedy and women. I'm no expert but this history omitted the British show That Was The Week That Was, imported to the United States in 1960s. Also no mention of Laugh In which employed all men writers, 1967-73. They did showcase this long list of women on that show.

Goldie Hawn, Ruth Buzzi, Lily Tomlin, Jo Anne Worley, Barbara Sharma, Ann Elder, Judy Carne, Teresa Graves, Pamela Rodgers, Chelsea Brown, Nancie Phillips, Patti Deutsch, Lisa Farringer, Sarah Kennedy, Donna Jean Young, Mitzi McCall, Eileen Brennan, guests Zsa Zsa Gabor, Jill St. John, Pamela Austin, Carol Channing, Dinah Shore, Greer Garson, Debbie Reynolds, Phyllis Diller (4), Lena Horne. Arlene Dahl, Cher, Nanette Fabray, Connie Stevens, Janet Leigh, Nancy Sinatra, Inga Neilsen, Sandy Duncan, Sue Ane Langdon, Sally Field, Diana Ross, Mitzi Gaynor, Sivi Aberg, Kaye Ballard, Rosemary Clooney, Gina Lollobrigida, Ann Miller, more.

Also not mentioned was the risque performer Belle Barth, born 1911, Annabelle Salzman, died 1971. She performed in the 1950s, 1960s and appeared on the Mike Douglas TV show 1962. She had at least one album, If I Embarrass You, Tell Your Friends.

Song Book From Columbia University

[From article]
Columbia graduates have a long and influential history in musical theater. Songwriters Richard Rodgers (CC 1923) and Lorenz Hart (JRN 1916) wrote their first songs for the University Varsity Show in 1919, and Rodgers later paired up with Oscar Hammerstein (CC 1916) to create such classics as Oklahoma and The Sound of Music. Then there's composer John Kander (GSAS '54), who wrote a dozen musicals, including Cabaret and Chicago, with lyricist Fred Ebb.

Before they graduate from Columbia’s School of the Arts, M.F.A. students in the theater producing and management concentration are required to put together a project that has some connection to the University.
As befitting a budding producer, Danielle Gautier, a first-year student in the program, decided to go big on her project. “I got to thinking, `What could I do that would really showcase the Columbia community?’ she said. "I started researching who’s gone here – the composers, the writers, the actors. What I found was that there was more than enough material, so why not use everyone?”

Mindless Authors Support Censorship

[From article]
These six writers have done a great disservice to the vital principle of free expression by their decision. They may not be precisely guilty of intolerance but by their refusal to take part in the PEN ceremony they have shown not only a political bias, to which they, like everyone else, is entitled, but more importantly a lack of courage. Adherence to the doctrine of free speech and courage in Western societies should mean allowing and even bestowing awards on expressions with which one does not agree. The six writers are not entitled to receive their own Freedom of Expression Courage Award.

M. Stanton Evans, Obituary

[From article]
“If and when Congress votes on a new immigration bill — whatever the “triggers,” timetables or other provisos — the real issue to be decided will be the same as it has been from the beginning. That issue is whether the Republican Party, dazed from a daily pounding by the Washington press corps, will agree to commit political suicide by enfranchising 11 plus million illegal aliens on U.S. soil, the vast majority of whom will soon be casting Democratic ballots.”
So wrote the great M. Stanton Evans, who passed away on Tuesday. Having been at the forefront of the movement to draft Ronald Reagan and defeat the Evil Empire, Evans had recently turned to the next greatest danger for America: immigration.
[. . .]
After the twice-defeated Reagan spoke to cheering throngs at CPAC in 1977, Evans, who opposed the third-party option, told him, “Governor, we got your message, and I think you got ours.” Reagan ran for president a third time, won the presidency and saved the country.
(One thing you must always remember, right-wingers: Never run the same guy for president three times. Look how that turned out!)
[. . .]
For decades, Stan was tapped to MC every conservative event in Washington because of his dry wit. He wrote beautifully, but avoided humor in his writing, something I attribute to the Yale education. In person, he was effortlessly hilarious, all the time, right up to his dying day — or at least up until two weeks ago when I last talked to him.
[. . .]

my book “Treason: Liberal Treachery From the Cold War to the War on Terrorism,” which liberals denounced on the grounds that I wore short skirts and also that it was insufficiently “scholarly.”
A couple years later, they got “scholarly” — and no short skirts — with Stan’s 600-plus-page opus, “Blacklisted by History: The Untold Story of Senator Joe McCarthy and His Fight Against America’s Enemies.”
[. . .]
Fix it, he said. Make it market-based. Allow competition. Otherwise, some other Democrat would come along and dump socialized medicine on the country.
He was right about that, and he’s right about immigration being the most dangerous threat to America’s survival since the Cold War. Immigration, Stan wrote a few years ago, “is strictly about the votes, and nothing but the votes. All the rest is sham and smokescreen. Obama and his party want their 70 percent of these 11-plus million illegals and will stop at nothing to get it.”

Writer Warns of Threat From Hunger

[From article]
In the most recent edition of Fortune magazine, Mark Koba, a freelance writer, warns that the next world war may very well be fought over food.
“The world has a massive food crisis on its hands,” Koba writes.
“The crisis is so big that organizations like the World Bank and the United Nations say there won’t be enough food to feed the global population when it jumps from the current seven billion people to nine billion by 2050.”
But, Koba adds, some research suggests there may be a major food shortage as soon as 2030, or a mere 15 years from now.
That may not seem like a very long time, but would seem long enough to find a way to avoid a global catastrophe.
But many experts say solutions won’t be easy or popular.
“To address food security, we need a shift in the way we address poverty and inequality in the world,” Stephen Scanlan, a professor of sociology at Ohio University, told Koba.

Then there is his account of attending the House of Commons in 1944 and discovering: “It is just a collection of mediocre-looking men in dingy, dark suits, nearly all speaking in the same accent and all laughing at the same jokes.”
[. . .]
There is no point, Orwell tells us, in being frank with our friends – and our enemies – if we cannot be honest with ourselves. Moreover, if we cannot manage the latter the former will be impossible. There is always a price to be paid for lies and for cowardice.

Harvard University Discusses Having Knowledge, When Someone Else Does Not Know What You Know

Jill E. Abramson '76, former executive editor of The New York Times, and Steven Pinker, Johnstone Family psychology professor, discuss different styles of writing at Farkas Hall on Tuesday night.

“Once you know something, it’s hard to imagine what it’s like for someone else not to know it,” Pinker said, adding “The reader and the writer are equals. The goal is to help the reader see objective reality,” So is that what MIT Professor Jonathan Gruber was doing when he described how the Washington DC Democratic politicians fooled "stupid Americans" when they passed Obama's heath care law? Was it hard for Prof. Gruber to understand "what it’s like for someone else not to know" what he knows? Is Prof. Gruber unique among academics?

NYC Novel Writer, Barnard College Graduate Found Dead After Apartment Fire

Evelyn Dahab, 33

[From article]
Evelyn Dahab, 33, who wrote a sizzling 2011 novel titled “Incapacitated: Sex, Power, Money, Control,” was found about 3:20 a.m. in her pad at 31 E. First St. at Second Avenue, authorities said.
Dahab, a former partner in the Park Slope bar Lucey’s Lounge and a wine blogger, was a Long Island native and Barnard College grad who had also had a minor role on the soap “Guiding Light,” her distraught mother, Carolyn Dahab, told The Post.
“She was beautiful. She was bright. She wrote a book. She was on ‘Guiding Light’ twice,” she said.
[. . .]
The website goodreads described Dahab’s book as “a haunting, sexually graphic novel about sex, power, money, and control. It’s the story of a young, beautiful Ivy League graduate who is emotionally and sexually paralyzed by the vices of one of New York City’s wealthiest bachelors, an oddly compelling man more than twice her age.”
She said on her Facebook page last month that she had been hospitalized after suffering a bad reaction to a prescription psychotropic drug she had been taking to treat bipolar disorder.

Writer For Southern Poverty Law Center Found Dead

David Ruenzel

[From article]
As a writer for the Southern Poverty Law Center, one of this favorite topics was rooting out racism. And how white racism is permanent. White racism is everywhere. And white racism explains everything.

This mantra of the Critical Race Theory and the Southern Poverty Law Center applied to all white people because, even if they were not personally cracking the whips, or breaking the skulls, white people benefitted from a racist system that did all that — and a lot more.
Ruenzel was writing about white privilege for the Southern Poverty Law Center as far back as 1997 — long before it became the rage at college campuses, newsrooms, churches, high schools and even grade schools.
By the time of his death, [David] Ruenzel had accumulated many of the trappings of the white privilege he exposed: The job. The home. The intact family. And most importantly in his case, white privilege endowed Ruenzel with an expectation of safety in the Oakland neighborhood where last week two black people are suspected of killing him.

How Song "This Ole House" Was Written

Stuart Hamblen (far right) in King Of The Cowboys (1943), also known as Starlight On The Trail. That's rodeo champ Yakima Canutt behind him.

[From song]
I was wandering way up in the mountains and came across this dilapidated cabin." He was hunting in the high Sierras and had noticed a mangy, starving old hound dog hanging around an otherwise abandoned cabin. "Inside, I found an old prospector lying dead. I saw curtains, so that meant a woman had been there. I saw kids' things lyin' around. And they were all gone now. The old man was alone." Most of us would just get out, some perhaps would go to the cops, but Hamblen sat down and, with the corpse lying next to him for inspiration, began to rough out a song. "It took about 30 minutes," he said. "I put it down on a brown paper bag the old fellow had left lying there:
Ain't a-gonna need this house no longer
Ain't a-gonna need this house no more
Ain't got time to fix the shingles
Ain't got time to fix the floor
Ain't got time to oil the hinges Or to mend no window pane
Ain't-a-gonna need this house no longer
I'm a-gettin' ready to meet the saints.
[. . .]
A quarter-century after he himself met the saints and a century after his birth, "This Ole House" remains the versatile Stuart Hamblen's most enduring legacy - and the only Number One hit written in the presence of a dead body.

Amazon's War With Writers, Publishers

Article does not explain details of the dispute.

[From article]
The struggle between the retailer and the publisher is ostensibly over the price of e-books but really over profit margins and, ultimately, the future of publishing. The conflict, which is unlike any in recent publishing history, has inflamed tensions across the literary spectrum. It began six months ago and appears unlikely to end any time soon.
Some repeat Campfire attendees who have supported Hachette in the dispute say they were not invited this year. Others say they are having second thoughts about going. The event has become as divisive as the fight.

Prominent Author Exposed as Fraud

Sounds like all of the character assassination broadcast about me for 44 years. But little of it was written so I am unable to fight it. It exists in the minds of most everyone I knew, know and met. And they are not talking. They just shun me and ridicule me on behalf of the character assassins.  I read the book that was shredded, about Barbara Hutton. Amazing.

[From article]
Given the abundant evidence that C. David Heymann was extraordinarily reckless with the truth, why does CBS continue to sell his books, and push them on teachers? Most publishers rely on their authors to be truthful, and diligent in their research, and most nonfiction books are not fact-checked by publishers. But when a red flag is raised, publishers have an obligation to their readers to investigate. And when a sea of red flags floods their lobby, they need to start pulping the fiction.

David Horowitz Explains Why He Writes Ten Volumes

[From article]
Five years into the Obama administration, most conservatives have little idea of the depth of its malignancy, or the fact that it is the product of decades of development that has transformed the Democratic party and created, as is rapidly becoming apparent, not only America’s nightmare but the world’s as well.
[. . .]
The nature of these conflicts as part of an ongoing war was, in my view, scarcely recognized by conservatives at the time, and has still not fully sunk in.
[. . .]
It is first of all a narrative map of the battles fought over the last 40 years and — it must be said – lost, almost every one. The Black Book contains a record as complete as any likely to be written of the struggle to resist a Communist-inspired Left that was not defeated in the Cold War but took advantage of the Soviet defeat to enter the American mainstream and conquer it, until today its members occupy the White House.
[. . .]
Communist Left marched off the streets and into the Democratic party, and over the next decades took commanding positions in the party’s congressional apparatus, and eventually its national leadership. As it acquired power, it gradually shifted its self-identification from “liberal” to the bolder “progressive,” a designation shared by most leaders of the Democratic party today.
[. . .]
the sabotage of the war on terror, the traducing of the civil-rights movement and its transformation into a mob led by the racial extortionists Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton (the latter now the president’s chief adviser on race), the subversion of the modern research university and the conversion of its liberal-arts divisions into doctrinal institutes for training American youth in the radical party line known as political correctness, the rise of a campus fascism aligned with Islamic Jew haters and genocidal terrorists,
[. . .]
the movement now in motion to dismantle the American system, and bring this country to its knees, is no overnight phenomenon and is not the result of misguided idealisms or misunderstandings that can be easily repaired. The adversary cannot be dissuaded, because what drives him is a religious mission on which his identity and quest for a meaningful life depend. He can be stopped only by a political counterforce that is determined and organized, and — most importantly — that understands the gravity of the threat it faces.
[. . .]
What bothered me was how profoundly the senator misread Obama, how he failed to understand the malice behind either his mendacity or his systematic efforts to dismantle America’s constitutional system and disarm us before our enemies. “He has good intentions,” Coburn assured the exasperated Lamb.
[. . .]
Obama and Castro are socialist missionaries. For that very reason, the evil they do far exceeds anything achievable by tinhorn tyrants. They are advocates of a cause that turns a blind eye toward the millions of corpses and the wrecked continents of the recent past while attacking the democratic foundations of what remains of a free-market, free-world community of nations, beginning with Israel and the United States.

Gov't Surveillance Creates Fear Among Writers, Artists

[From article]
A new report from the PEN Center and the FDR Group entitled “Chilling Effects: NSA Surveillance Drives U.S. Writers to Self-Censor” finds that 85 percent of surveyed writers are worried about government surveillance of Americans, and nearly three-quarters (73 percent) “have never been as worried about privacy rights and freedom of the press as they are today.”
[. . .]
Writer comments included statements such as, “I assume everything I do electronically is subject to monitoring.”

Islamist Intimidation of Authors

Threat and Response—Part Six
Islamist intimidation of  authors

One of the weapons in the arsenal of stealth jihadists is called “libel tourism.”
They file lawsuits against American authors in countries like Great Britain, where authors don’t have the same protection against defamation lawsuits they enjoy in the U.S.
They know they can’t win their lawsuits in the U.S., but their goal is simple—intimidate authors who are writing about terrorism.

Rachel Ehrenfeld

This tactic was used against Rachel Ehrenfeld, author of the book Funding Evil. A wealthy Saudi won a judgment against Ehrenfeld in a British court.
Ms. Ehrenfeld fought back, getting a bill introduced in the New York state legislature in 2008 that became known as “Rachel’s Law.”
The legislation was designed to protect New York authors from the kind of intimidation lawsuit that targeted Ms. Ehrenfeld.
ACT! for America delivered thousands of names on a petition, and hundreds of phone calls and emails to legislators in support of the bill, and the bill passed.
In 2010, we got a similar bill passed in Tennessee.
