Thieves Steal Four Million In Gold From Truck in North Carolina, Going To Massachusetts

Two armed security guards employed by the transport company, TransValue Inc, reported the robbery around 6:45 p.m. on Sunday to Wilson County sheriff's deputies.
The guards told officers that earlier in the evening, as they were passing through Wilson County about 50 miles east of Raleigh, their truck carrying the shipment of gold and silver had mechanical problems, so they pulled it to the side of the road.
While they were parked, three armed men in a white van approached them, ordered them onto the ground and tied their hands behind their backs, police said.
The men made the guards walk into the woods and then left with several barrels of gold estimated to be worth more than $4 million, police said.
The guards said they were traveling northbound from Miami to Massachusetts.
The case is under investigation by the sheriff's office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

ScienceDaily reports that the gold mining complex in the Eria river valley includes sophisticated hydraulic works diverting river water to the mines. The Las Médulas region in León is considered to be the largest opencast mine in the Roman Empire but the University team discovered that mining extended many miles to the south east to the Eria valley.
"The volume of earth exploited is much greater than previously thought and the works performed are impressive, having achieved actual river captures, which makes this valley extremely important in the context of Roman mining in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula," said Javier Fernández Lozano, geologist at the University of Salamanca and co-author of a study on the mines published in the Journal of Archaeological Science.

In 1936, Morris Rabinowitz, a dentist, fled his native Germany .

He sold his assets and made five sets of solid gold teeth with his cash, well above the limit he could bring into the U.S.

When he arrived in New York , the customs official was perplexed as to why anybody would have five sets of gold teeth. So Morris explained. "Jews who keep kosher have two separate sets of dishes for meat products and dairy products, but I am so religious I also have separate sets of teeth."

The customs official shook his head and said, "Well, that accounts for two sets of teeth. What about the other three?"

Morris replied, "Very religious Jews use separate dishes for Passover, but I am so Orthodox that I have separate teeth for Passover meat and Passover dairy food."

The customs official shook his head and said, "You must be a man of very strong faith to have separate teeth for meat and dairy products and likewise for Passover. That accounts for four sets of teeth. What about the fifth set?"
