Lack Of Faith In Mexican Government Leads To Vigilantism, Will US Follow?

there were more public lynchings this past year than at any other time in more than a quarter-century. There were at least 78 lynchings last year in Mexico, more than double the number the previous year, according to data collected by Raúl Rodríguez Guillén, a professor and an author of the book “Mexico Lynchings, 1988-2014.”
[. . .]
in Mexico, where 98 percent of murders go unsolved and the state is virtually absent in some areas. By some estimates, just 12 percent of crimes are even reported in Mexico, largely because of a lack of faith that justice will ever be served.
Such a void, taken to extremes, has found its resolution in violence.
“There is a crisis in terms of the growth of violence and crime and a parallel erosion of authority and the rule of law,” Mr. Guillén said. “These lynchings acquire a double meaning. People lynch both the suspect and the symbol of authority.”

Interviews with dozens of residents about the lynching of the brothers — David and José Abraham Copado Molina — revealed little remorse. In the end, the fear that two suspects might be escaping with the help of the police outweighed concerns over spilling innocent blood.
“If they were innocent, and I’m not saying they were, then this is a case of one group paying for the crimes of another,” said Emanuel Petla, 33, near the site of the lynchings in October. “What happened the day of the lynchings is a situation that has been unraveling for some time now.”
“One thing led to the other,” he added. “Insecurity, frustration, confusion and weariness.”
The police are not exempt from mob action. Last year, five officers were badly beaten after they killed a villager during an operation. Two died from their injuries.
In the borough of Iztapalapa, residents have raised banners warning thieves that they will not be turned over to the police. Instead, vengeance will be taken on their mothers. In September, two men were set on fire in Chiapas State, having been accused of stealing a car.
Such frustration has long been an issue, along with the tendency for people to take the law into their own hands. In the last few years, self-defense groups have popped up to fight organized crime, filling the void left by government forces either incapable of combating criminal gangs, unwilling to do so or actively working alongside them.

But for all the government’s flaws, vigilantism rarely seems to do much better.
The initial gains of some self-defense groups give way to predatory behavior, creating a new order of bandit. Lynchings, too, seldom generate much more than public disgust and a fleeting sense of agency for the community.
And sometimes the community gets it wrong,
[. . .]
On the day they died, the brothers had arrived in Ajalpan around 9 a.m. They had come to this city of about 60,000 people for the firm Marketing Research and Services, polling residents about tortilla consumption by children. Often their work was like this, asking basic questions of populations on behalf of businesses collecting market data.Continue reading the main story
Though the job was standard enough, the context was not. The town was swirling in a tempest of fear. In the days before the pair arrived, social media brimmed with warnings about child abductions and admonitions to be on the lookout for strangers.
Just a few hours after the Copado brothers arrived, word began to spread about the two, dressed in slacks and collared shirts, carrying shoulder bags. By evening, a group of townspeople approached the pair outside a store.
The crowd demanded to know why they were asking about children. The brothers explained and produced identification. But the residents grew more aggressive, witnesses said, until the police arrived and took the brothers away.

The police are not a source of confidence here. Nearly every resident interviewed recalled an episode a year earlier, when a man had been caught stealing money from a church collection plate and the police had released him. Villagers tried then to lynch the man, but he escaped.
“We have such culture and tradition here, our food, our crafts,” Juan Guzmán, the deputy mayor, said. “But now we are known for this.”
For others, the reputation was not such a bad thing. Some residents reckoned it would be a long time before another thief or would-be kidnapper turned up in town.
“It has an effect,” Donardo Andrade, 27, said.
In the Copado home in Mexico City, the effect has been devastation. David’s children cry often for their father, though they are too young to know what happened to him.
“They can feel his absence,” said the lynched brothers’ mother, Dulce María Montero. She has erected her own altar for her boys. For the Day of the Dead celebration here, she placed a pot of honey and guava on its mantel.
She prays that the sweet scent will guide her sons’ spirits home.

Vigilante Violence in Acapulco, Mexico. 13 Dead

[From article]
A clash between armed vigilante groups just north of the resort city of Acapulco killed 13 people on Saturday, according to Mexico's human rights commission.
The violence came on the eve of Mexico's midterm election, in which President Enrique Pena Nieto faces growing discontent over lawlessness, corruption, and lackluster economic growth.
Acapulco, a once-famed tourist hub, has more recently become known as one of Mexico's most violent cities.
One of the two vigilante gangs involved in Saturday's battle is believed to have connections to the Jalisco New Generation cartel, a methamphetamine trafficking group that the government accuses of posing a major threat to public safety.

Mexican Drug Cartels Reportedly Force New Members to Eat Hearts of Victims

Vigilantes in the Michoacan state have been battling vicious drug gangs that forced some of their members to eat their victims' hearts. Photo: Reuters

[From article]
A vicious Mexican drug gang forced some members to eat the hearts of murder victims as part of a gruesome initiation rite to root out infiltrators, a government security official said Tuesday, citing witness testimony.
For much of the past year, Michoacan, a mountainous, agricultural state in western Mexico, has been ravaged by fighting between drug gang henchmen and vigilantes who took up arms against the cartels but have since splintered into violent factions.
[. . .]
The renewed fighting in Michoacan comes as President Enrique Pena Nieto faces his deepest crisis since taking office, following the apparent murder of 43 trainee teachers by a drug gang working with corrupt police in neighboring Guerrero state.
[. . .]
The main gangs operating in Michoacan, La Familia Michoacana, and later offshoot the Knights Templar cartel, were founded by Nazario Moreno, or “The Craziest One,” a cultish crime boss who was finally killed in March 2014 after the previous government declared him dead in 2010.
[. . .]
Interviewed on local television, Alfredo Castillo, Michoacan’s federal security commissioner, denied cannibalism was widespread, but said there were various testimonies indicating heart-eating was part of a macabre initiation Moreno used to root out moles or test his men’s loyalty.
“The ritual ranged from dismembering people they intended to kill to sometimes serving up the heart,” Castillo said.
[. . .]
More than 100,000 people have been killed in gang-related violence in Mexico since 2007.

Louis Farrakhan Advocated Vigilantism

[From article]
In late November, the student government at taxpayer-funded Morgan State University sponsored a conference on slavery reparations for black Americans.
Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan was the keynote speaker.
[. . .]
Farrakhan’s keynote rant lasted over two hours. At one point, he held up what resembled a Quran at the public school, saying that both the central religious text of Islam and the Bible contain a “law of retaliation” and “a life for a life.”
“As long as they kill us and go to Wendy’s and have a burger and go to sleep, they’ll keep killing us,” the Nation of Islam leader fumed. “But when we die and they die, then soon we’re going to sit at a table and talk about it! We’re tired! We want some of this earth or we’ll tear this goddamn country up!”
[. . .]
Farrakhan’s Nov. 22 remarks occurred 28 days before Ismaaiyl Abdullah Brinsley brutally murdered two New York City police officers.
Brinsley’s abandoned YouTube channel contains video showing him heading to pray at Brooklyn’s Masjid At Taqwa, a mosque that has been linked to terrorist and anti-police activity. Before killing himself after he murdered the two officers, Brinsley — or Muhammad-Abdullah — also claimed that he worked at the Islamic Society of North America, a Muslim civil rights group that has also been named an unindicted co-conspirator of the Holy Land Foundation.
[. . .]
He also referred to white people as “crackers.

Biggest Day of Lynchings Was in 1891 of Italians in New Orleans

AP Seth Wenig

[From article]
President Barack Obama, Eric Holder, Bill de Blasio, and the Rev. Al Sharpton are fueling the flames of racism in America just as the Ku Klux Klan did 100 years ago. Sounds inflammatory? It is. What’s worse, it’s true.
The reason? They are considered the establishment. They are out in broad daylight perpetrating a racist agenda and, instead of wearing a white sheet to protect their identity, they are shrouded in the cloak of government.
They are adept and skillful at delivering a populist message of redistribution of wealth or how minorities are targeted by the police. Listen my friends, the biggest day of lynchings in America happened to Italians in New Orleans in 1891 in response to nine Italians being found not guilty in the murder of a police chief. A mob dragged those nine Italians and two others from the jail they were being held in and lynched them all.
[. . .]
John Parker, who helped organize the lynch mob and later went on to become governor of Louisiana, said of Italians that they were ” just a little worse than the Negro, being if anything filthier in their habits, lawless and treacherous.”
Add to that Italians are Catholics, another thing that added to the hostility toward them. Yes, Catholics were feared and treated very poorly for years. Also, for years the existence of the Mafia had Italians mistreated and held in suspicion by law enforcement. Actually it still goes on today. But Italians understood that where there is smoke there is fire, and things were happening in their community.
[. . .]
There has been a dangerous pandering to the black communities by certain progressives. They foster deliberate victimization so that a dangerous political agenda can be furthered. Instead of seeing through this, we have the silent deadly complacency of the media and Hollywood.
[. . .]
instead of asking that the communities respect and work together with law enforcement… we see the resurgence of what Bill Ayers and the various terrorist organizations had wanted to do in tearing down our social structure and leaving in its place chaos and the seeds for a Marxist revolution during the ‘60s and ‘70s.
[. . .]
The attack on America is happening from within, and the GOP is just as guilty by their ineffectual behavior.

Black Suspects Rob With Gun Six White Elders In Name of Michael Brown

Vigilantism is growing in the United States.

[From article]
Police say two thieves robbed six people in the 1100 block of Mississippi Saturday night and said “This is for Mike Brown” before fleeing the scene.
According to investigators, the six victims, whose ages range from 59-61, were leaving a restaurant and walking north on Mississippi when the two suspects approached them. One suspect pulled out a gun and the other demanded the victim’s property.

[From article]
The detective had been standing on the southbound platform with his cousin at around 6:30 p.m. when the cousin began “bothering” a panhandler — and the suspect interceded by punching the detective in the head, law enforcement sources told The Post.
[. . .]
The suspect is described as a male black in his early 40s, 5’ 10” to 6 feet tall, about 200 pounds and wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans.

Abraham Lincoln Warned About Lawlessness

[From article]
a thought-provoking anthology entitled What so Proudly We Hail: The American Soul in Story, Speech, and Song. It is a particularly timely item.
[. . .]
Obama incites people to lose their temper.
[. . .]
It certainly does not take much imagination to understand the seething anger that people experience because of this deliberate usurpation of the law by Obama. Righteous resentment is building.
[. . .]
Eric Holder is the first attorney general in history to be held in contempt by the House of Representatives; yet he still is in charge. He has not changed his extreme stance since his university days. As a student at Columbia, Holder supported radical groups and he continues to exhibit blatant racism in his actions. Holder a, "race baiter," is really a provocateur who is looking for an excuse to ratchet up punishments against those good men and women Lincoln spoke about.

Mexican Vigilantes Fight Drug Cartel Violence

[From article]
There was the humiliation of watching gangsters speed around town in fancy trucks, shut down streets for drunken parties or beat to death an elderly man who scolded them. There were kidnappings and executions. Then there was the gang’s ruthless, mafia-like control of almost every facet of the local economy, down to a street-side taco stand.
The area’s lime growers, for example, were taxed by metrics that included acreage, limes harvested and crates packed. The meager wages of the lime pickers were also taxed, along with the bus fares that they paid to get to the groves. Gang members taxed sacks of corn and the tortillas made from them. A man installing a floor in his house soon had a gang member at his door, demanding a fee. A man who ran a restaurant said the cartel began taking a cut of the coins in his jukebox.
[. . .]
Locals said that they filed complaints and pointed out the gangsters to local authorities but that nothing ever happened.
“The government never saw them around here,” said Pimentel, explaining his view that local officials were corrupted by the cartel and ignored residents’ complaints. “We couldn’t take it any longer. We held until our last breath.”
This sounds awfully like Cambridge and the state of Massachusetts. It is also how the Boston office of the FBI operated. Civilians would complain about James Bulger's criminal activities to the FBI. The FBI agent in charge of organized crime would relay the names of the complainants to Bulger who would kill them. The FBI has not been scrutinized or cleansed  of its insitutional corruption.
[. . .]
America is now a nation ruled -- and that is the correct word -- by a self-appointed elite of ignorant snobs and power-mad degenerates to compete with the worst ruling castes of the civilized world. The U.S. federal government has, through the deliberate deteriorations of a century, finally dispensed with all but the flimsiest pretense of the principles of limited government and the rule of law that virtually defined America's historic political achievement. By turns Commodus, Nero, and Caligula, today's American ruling elite steer an intentionally debased, demoralized and indoctrinated majority down the path to a form of enslavement as non-metaphorical as it is ingenious, the kind foreseen by Tocqueville as "soft despotism." Never to be misunderstood is that by "soft," Tocqueville did not mean weak; he meant achieved through enticements, rather than through brute force. This tyranny, he warned, might be more thorough than any "hard" despotism, in that the populace so enticed will welcome the chains, rather than resist them.
