Lack Of Faith In Mexican Government Leads To Vigilantism, Will US Follow?

there were more public lynchings this past year than at any other time in more than a quarter-century. There were at least 78 lynchings last year in Mexico, more than double the number the previous year, according to data collected by Raúl Rodríguez Guillén, a professor and an author of the book “Mexico Lynchings, 1988-2014.”
[. . .]
in Mexico, where 98 percent of murders go unsolved and the state is virtually absent in some areas. By some estimates, just 12 percent of crimes are even reported in Mexico, largely because of a lack of faith that justice will ever be served.
Such a void, taken to extremes, has found its resolution in violence.
“There is a crisis in terms of the growth of violence and crime and a parallel erosion of authority and the rule of law,” Mr. Guillén said. “These lynchings acquire a double meaning. People lynch both the suspect and the symbol of authority.”

Interviews with dozens of residents about the lynching of the brothers — David and José Abraham Copado Molina — revealed little remorse. In the end, the fear that two suspects might be escaping with the help of the police outweighed concerns over spilling innocent blood.
“If they were innocent, and I’m not saying they were, then this is a case of one group paying for the crimes of another,” said Emanuel Petla, 33, near the site of the lynchings in October. “What happened the day of the lynchings is a situation that has been unraveling for some time now.”
“One thing led to the other,” he added. “Insecurity, frustration, confusion and weariness.”
The police are not exempt from mob action. Last year, five officers were badly beaten after they killed a villager during an operation. Two died from their injuries.
In the borough of Iztapalapa, residents have raised banners warning thieves that they will not be turned over to the police. Instead, vengeance will be taken on their mothers. In September, two men were set on fire in Chiapas State, having been accused of stealing a car.
Such frustration has long been an issue, along with the tendency for people to take the law into their own hands. In the last few years, self-defense groups have popped up to fight organized crime, filling the void left by government forces either incapable of combating criminal gangs, unwilling to do so or actively working alongside them.

But for all the government’s flaws, vigilantism rarely seems to do much better.
The initial gains of some self-defense groups give way to predatory behavior, creating a new order of bandit. Lynchings, too, seldom generate much more than public disgust and a fleeting sense of agency for the community.
And sometimes the community gets it wrong,
[. . .]
On the day they died, the brothers had arrived in Ajalpan around 9 a.m. They had come to this city of about 60,000 people for the firm Marketing Research and Services, polling residents about tortilla consumption by children. Often their work was like this, asking basic questions of populations on behalf of businesses collecting market data.Continue reading the main story
Though the job was standard enough, the context was not. The town was swirling in a tempest of fear. In the days before the pair arrived, social media brimmed with warnings about child abductions and admonitions to be on the lookout for strangers.
Just a few hours after the Copado brothers arrived, word began to spread about the two, dressed in slacks and collared shirts, carrying shoulder bags. By evening, a group of townspeople approached the pair outside a store.
The crowd demanded to know why they were asking about children. The brothers explained and produced identification. But the residents grew more aggressive, witnesses said, until the police arrived and took the brothers away.

The police are not a source of confidence here. Nearly every resident interviewed recalled an episode a year earlier, when a man had been caught stealing money from a church collection plate and the police had released him. Villagers tried then to lynch the man, but he escaped.
“We have such culture and tradition here, our food, our crafts,” Juan Guzmán, the deputy mayor, said. “But now we are known for this.”
For others, the reputation was not such a bad thing. Some residents reckoned it would be a long time before another thief or would-be kidnapper turned up in town.
“It has an effect,” Donardo Andrade, 27, said.
In the Copado home in Mexico City, the effect has been devastation. David’s children cry often for their father, though they are too young to know what happened to him.
“They can feel his absence,” said the lynched brothers’ mother, Dulce María Montero. She has erected her own altar for her boys. For the Day of the Dead celebration here, she placed a pot of honey and guava on its mantel.
She prays that the sweet scent will guide her sons’ spirits home.

A version of this article appears in print on January 24, 2016, on page A1 of the New York edition with the headline: As Mexican Frustrations Rise, So Does Number of Lynchings.

Mission Of U.S. Army

[From article]
We give the Army, not the fumble fingered Homeland Security, responsibility for border integrity and security. After all, they are charged with protecting the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic and what could be more compelling than protecting the actual land of the United States in that mission instead of deploying a Ready Force to Yambol, Bulgaria, or Camp Bondsteel in Macedonia? Maybe Macedonia and Bulgaria need military help. Maybe we’re using them for missions best not discussed. But, the Army’s primary, core, fundamental mission is to protect the United States of America and that isn’t happening. Their goal must be to protect the home first, and then we’ll talk about all these other expenses and missions. Secure the home, or there’s no point to the rest of it.
[. . .]
Muslim terrorists are paying $50,000 per head to slip across our southern border. Texas officials warn of terrorism coming across our southern border. Border agents whom Obama has emasculated warn of criminal gangs crossing the border. Mexican cartels control American soil up to 70 miles inland from the border. How is any of this not an urgent matter of National Security? The US Amry’s mission is, after all, at Section 3062 of Title 10 US Code -
*Preserving the peace and security and providing for the defense of the United States, the Commonwealths and possessions and any areas occupied by the United States
*Supporting the national policies
*Implementing the national objectives
*Overcoming any nations responsible for aggressive acts that imperil the peace and security of the United States
[. . .]
How is this not the most urgent national security matter facing America? If people to the south of our border cannot control themselves and respect our rule of law, then it is up to America to force the issue. The US Army can do the job, with troops willing and eager to not be laid off like factory workers and who would, I do not doubt, love performing the Mission they signed up to do: protect the United States.

Suspect Shoots DEA Agent Who Broke Into His Home During Drug Raid

In a related situation New Jersey state law permits renters and homeowners to use deadly force on anyone who tries to remove them from a lawful premises. After an illegal lockout by my landlord I obtained a state court order for re-entry, specifically allowing me to break locks. After showing the order to the police sergeant on duty and explaining my plan, 14 police officers arrested me when I was executing the court order. Under state laws I imagine I was permitted to use deadly force on all 14 officers. I did not and remain alive. Heh, heh.

[From article]
At issue: whether Joel Robinson, 32, is guilty of a crime for shootinga DEA agent in the first few seconds of a surprise federal law enforcement raid last October at his Orangeburg house.
Agents expected to find a cache of drugs, but a search of the premises found nothing but a small amount of marijuana for recreational use, according to legal records in the case.
Robinson is expected to claim self-defense, saying he did what any citizen would have in assuming he was the target of a home invasion – grabbing a gun and firing a half-dozen shots in the direction of those he assumed were home invaders.
[. . .]
An indictment in the case charges Robinson with being in a drug manufacturing conspiracy in South Carolina and Georgia with two other men. Robinson is also charged with assaulting individuals executing a search warrant and using a firearm during a drug trafficking crime.
According to the indictment, chemicals to manufacture an illegal drug allegedly were transported from the Atlanta area to Robinson’s house in Orangeburg, and Robinson and the other men then transported the chemicals to other places.
The gun Robinson fired was a .45 caliber Taurus handgun with a laser sight, according to the indictment.
In addition to seeking a guilty finding from the jury, federal prosecutors also want Robinson to forfeit his house and four pistols, four rifles and two shotguns found at his house.
Robinson, who is being held at the Lexington County Detention Center, has hired two experienced criminal defense lawyers, Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin, both of Columbia, to defend him.

Four Black Gentlemen Shoot Dead White Kansas Gunshop Owner Defending His Wife

Rebecca and Jon Bieker

[From article]
On Friday, Jan. 9, at around 2 p.m. on a sunny afternoon, four armed individuals entered the shop and encountered Becky Bieker apparently alone behind the counter.
Based on ensuing events, it seems fair to surmise that their intent was robbery.
But whatever their plans may have been, they went awry when Jon Bieker, watching the store’s closed-circuit TV, saw his wife being brutally beaten and emerged from the rear portion of the store to protect and defend her.
The way events were reported by local print and broadcast media, “gunfire broke out”; “shots were fired”; “a shootout ensued”; in the process, three of the individuals were wounded; two were incapacitated and unable to flee, but one wounded robber and his unwounded accomplice fled and were arrested nearby in short order. But Jon Bieker, 44, was fatally wounded and succumbed within hours at a hospital.
One suspect is 18 yrs. old, two are 19 and another is 20. All have now been charged with first-degree murder. Two of them are still hospitalized.

Three of Four Suspects in Gunfight at Shawnee, Kansas Gunshop

[. . .]
It was also several days before any identifying details about the four “teens” were reported; nor were their names reported for several days, and it was longer before their photos were shown.
The cynics among us have almost come to expect that when a journalist’s physical description of a suspect conspicuously omits anything about the suspect’s complexion, there’s a reason.
And that’s part of why the cynics feel that the media are following a template we’ve seen before, as in the way 17 yr. old, 6’2” and 175 lb. “little” Trayvon Martin was characterized as “a child”, accompanied by a childhood photo, and the way Michael Brown of Ferguson, MO was characterized as a “gentle giant”.
But labeling armed robbers as “teens” ought to be a two-way street. If these alleged murderers are indeed “teenagers” -- which carries the subtext that they are therefore not expected to be fully responsible for their decisions and behavior -- I think it would be only fair to involve their parents, and to make them at least subject to questioning.
In the Ferguson, MO case, the media were quick to publish details about Officer Darren Wilson, including his address, which made his family subject to harassment and even death threats.
[. . .]

Jews, Under Attack, Need To Begin Carrying

[From article]
France’s Jews have got to start packing heat. They are being set upon by thugs, the French police are useless and the French judicial system is worse. The French liberal press sides with the attackers. The French government votes overwhelmingly to recognize a terrorist Palestinian state. Hey, sometimes it gets to where you need to take the matter of your protection into your own hands.
[. . .]
The last ten years have seen a horrendous increase of anti-Jewish violence in Western countries, with the exception of the U.S. Upticks in Germany, Sweden, Britain, amongst others. A veritable surge in Canada. Yes, our neighbor to the north, our cultural twin, in all ways except one. Canada, like Europe, does not have a Second Amendment.
[. . .]
Jews in France should let it be known that they intend to carry a weapon for defensive purposes. Jewish communities everywhere should raise money for their legal defense when they get arrested. I believe that they will get a very sympathetic hearing from French juries. They might even start an unstoppable trend.

Civil Unrest In Ferguson MO, Not Warranted By Facts

[From article]
A hallmark of August was pointlessly destructive civil disorder, and it’s only gotten more pointless. In late September, the makeshift memorial to Michael Brown on the street in Ferguson burned down, probably set alight by its own candles.
This set off minor rioting, including the vandalizing of a beauty salon that has been hit multiple times for the offense of operating a business in a town where protesters are so committed to justice.
In nearby St. Louis a few weeks later, an off-duty cop working as a private security guard shot to death a teen who had fired at him with a Ruger 9mm.
It turned out the gun had been stolen two weeks earlier, and the teen, monitored with an ankle bracelet, had been awaiting trial on a felony concealed-weapon charge.
This event was nonetheless filtered through the lens of Ferguson. Protesters took the streets to demonstrate against what would strike most people as a legitimate act of self-defense, chanting the inapt “Hands up, don’t shoot!”
[. . .]
FBI forensics show that the gun was indeed fired twice in the car, and Brown’s blood was on the gun and Officer Wilson’s uniform.
Sharpton and protesters maintain that all they want is justice. It may well be what justice demands in this case is no indictment of a cop who fired in self-defense.
Although, sadly, that is unlikely to be a formula for peace.

St. Louis Officer Shoots Dead Black Teen After Being Shot At By The Suspect

[From article]
The officer approached a group of men. One of the men took off running, Dotson said, so the officer pursued. Dotson said the suspect approached the officer in an "aggressive" manner, with a physical altercation occurring. The man then turned and fired three rounds at the officer before his gun jammed, Dotson said.
The officer, who was not injured, returned fire, shooting 17 times and fatally wounding the man, Dotson said.

One Button Smart Pepper Spray Takes Photo, Alerts Police

Second nature: The Defender's designers hope that users will incorporate the device into their daily routine, carrying it along with their keys and phone.

[From article]A new 'smart' pepper spray promises to disable an attacker, take a picture of them and instantly send it to law enforcement - all with the push of a single button.
The Defender, which hangs on a keychain, combines high-strength pepper spray, a flashlight and a camera that links users' cell phones via Bluetooth, Ozy.com reports.
When the button is pressed, a stream of high-strength spray hits the assailant, while at the same time a siren sounds to attack attention and the camera snaps a shot of their face. The Defender then sends the photo and your GPS location to a '24/7 monitoring service' that contacts local 911 centers and alerts them to distress.

Obama Asked To Butt Out Of Israeli Defense of Its Nation

Obama did not condemn the use of hospitals and schools by Hamas and encouraging Palestinian civilians to place themselves in danger and be killed as martyrs.

[From article]
A top Israeli official wants President Barack Obama to stop meddling with the Jewish state during its conflict with Hamas in Gaza.
Speaking to Israel’s Army Radio, Housing and Construction Minister Uri Ariel criticized Obama telling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that there should be an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
“Leave us alone,” Ariel told Army Radio, directing his words at Obama. “Go focus on Syria.”
Obama spoke with Netanyahu Sunday about the rising number of Palestinian deaths in Gaza and the worsening humanitarian crisis.

The Israeli military has said it has located 31 tunnels, is aware of the existence of 10 more and has so far demolished close to 20.
Gaza militants have repeatedly used the tunnels to sneak into Israel, including on Monday when several infiltrated into southern Israel.

Road To Peace, Eliminate HAMAS

[From article]
The salient point is that Israel handed Hamas control of the Gaza Strip in 2005 to placate Western leaders. Since that time, Israel has had nothing but trouble, and it keeps getting worse by the day. I know that there was bitter resentment inside Israel in 2005 because the tiny country was forced to defend “settlers” in Gaza at great cost, but that was nothing compared with the cost of the three major military operations since withdrawal. In fact, Israel would have been much better off if she had never relinquished control -- better off in terms of shekels spent and lives lost. That’s the truth, like it or not.
Through it all, Hamas has remained what Hamas is and always has been -- a terrorist organization whose only reason for being is to annihilate Israel. Hamas has taken a page out of Yasser Arafat’s playbook. This is what Arafat said:
“Peace for us means the destruction of Israel. We are preparing for an all-out war, a war which will last for generations. Since January 1965, when Fatah was born, we have become the most dangerous enemy that Israel has…. We shall not rest until the day when we return to our home, and until we destroy Israel.” (El Mundo, Caracas, Venezuela, February 11, 1980)
[. . .]
Hamas’ leaders have played Western leaders like a fiddle, and they have been so effective because Western leaders have been too ambivalent about Israel. Some of them are openly hostile to the Jewish state, but regardless of their true beliefs, the outcome for Israel has been the same -- war followed by war followed by war with brief respites in between so the enemy can reload and take care of their wounded.
[. . .]
They need to understand that Israel is the West’s frontline against radical Islam. Israel is their primary target now, but Islamists have the rest of us in their crosshairs.
That’s exactly what Islamists are saying and they are saying it openly. After Israel, we’re next -- probably Europe first, then the U.S., then Russia, then China. It’s the world against radical Islam. They started it, and we are foolish if bury our heads in the sand and pretend it isn’t so.

Unlawful Use of Taxpayer Funds

The announcement of annual free self defense training for women only is shameless overt unlawful discrimination against men by the City of Cambridge, using taxpayer money. (no byline, "Cambridge Police to offer free self-defense courses for women," May 10, 2014, Cambridge Chronicle) The passive population is expected to believe that women are the only victims of violent street attacks. But also that men are capable of fighting off their attackers in this age of gangs of black youth attacking individual white civilians. This is dangerous public policy for the male population, complete nonsense, one of many implemented by misguided city officials.

Trayvon Martin Case Exposes Black Racist Media, Government Officials, Journalists, Civil Rights Activists

[From article]
To date, the prosecution has put on a number of witnesses who also confirm Zimmerman's a
[. . .]

As the week ends there is not a shred of credible evidence from the state of Florida to counter Zimmerman's self-defense assertion. Not one shred of evidence. For this a perfectly innocent man 's life has been ruined and he and his family impoverished. Let that sink in.

The prosecution deserves to be tarred forever with this unjust prosecution. So should the Department of Justice, the race baiters who promoted it to keep the black voters stirred up in time for Obama's reelection. Recall Obama himself saying if he had a son he'd have looked like Trayvon, and the hundreds of marchers in hoodies carrying signs demanding this prosecution and carrying signs with angelic pictures of Trayvon as a kid, not as he was on the night of the murder -- a large man with a drug habit and a record of thuggery.

No one mentions that like Tawana Brawley and Crystal Mangnum, Rachel Jeantel was exploited by her own people -- Crump and Sharpton and Jackson, who so tarnish the legacy of the civil rights movement by manipulating limited black women to lie for their own political and economic ends, despite the humiliation they bring upon these women when the facts finally are made clear. And after perfectly innocent people have suffered.

[. . .]
Jeantel testified that Trayvon called Zimmerman what we so ludicrously in an age of widespread profanity call "the n-word" and characterized him as a "creepy ass cracker." She made it clear that both terms were regularly used in "her culture."
At the very same time that Paula Deen was being vilified for being a racist and her endorsements and TV show being stripped from her, people rushed in to defend Jeantel's racism.

Right To Defend Oneself Includes Having Guns

[From article]
"Today, Second Amendment discussions largely relate to self-defense, hunting or mere sport shooting. These rights are true, but they aren’t primarily what the founders envisioned when codifying the right to bear arms.
[. . .]
Defending one’s own is vital to man’s very survival. We also have a duty to protect those amongst us incapable of protecting themselves. The police will not save you.
[. . .]
As John Lott demonstrated in More Guns, Less Crime, “States with the largest increases in gun ownership also have the largest drops in violent crime.” Concealed carry permit holders statistically have lower crime rates than police officers. Switzerland and Israel have miniscule gun crime even as their citizenry must maintain weapons."
