University of Virginia Lawyers Practically Admit Rape Hoax of Woman Student

Lawyers for the alleged rape victim at the center of a now-retracted Rolling Stone article about the University of Virginia have practically admitted she made up the persona of her attacker.
In November 2014, Rolling Stone published an article on rape culture at the Charlottesville school that centered on the experiences of a student named 'Jackie' who claimed she was gang-raped by a group of fraternity brothers in an initiation ceremony. Jackie told reporter Sabrina Rubin Erdely that she was lured to the frat house by one of the brothers, a student named Haven Monahan who she met in chemistry class.
The magazine was later forced to retract the article when independent investigations by the Charlottesville Police, the Washington Post and Columbia University found Jackie's story was unsubstantiated. Police also were never able to find evidence that anyone matching Haven Monahan's description even existed.
Following Rolling Stone's embarrassing retraction, UVa associate dean Nicole Eramo filed a defamation lawsuit against the magazine for their negative portrayal of her in the piece.
Then, last month, Eramo's lawyers made a stunning revelation in court documents, saying they found evidence that the email address belonging to Haven Monahan was accessed via the internet network at Jackie's lawyers' law firm in March - suggesting Jackie created the email herself and perhaps the entire persona of Haven.
On Tuesday, Jackie's lawyers responded to the accusations, saying they had indeed signed into the email account. Still, they refused to go so far as to admit that Jackie made up Haven's persona, as Eramo's lawyers allege.
One of Eramo's lawyers, Libby Locke, told The Washington Post that the filing shows her lawyers 'admit accessing it, which means Jackie is Haven, a point they’ve refused to answer all along.'
Eramos lawyers argue that Jackie made up the persona of Haven Monahan to make Ryan Duffin, another UVa student who Jackie had a crush on, jealous.

The fraternity at the center of a now-discredited Rolling Stone rape article says the story was defamatory and reckless and they are pursuing legal action against the magazine.
Phi Kappa Psi said Monday in a statement that the article was viewed by millions, led to members being ostracized and there was vandalism of the fraternity house.
The fraternity's statement came as the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism released a report, saying the magazine's shortcomings "encompassed reporting, editing, editorial supervision and fact-checking."

Virginia prosecutors reportedly have filed charges of first-degree murder against Jesse Matthew in connection with the death of University of Virginia student Hannah Graham this past September.
The charges were reported by WVIR-TV in Charlottesville. The Albemarle County Police and Commonwealth Attorney’s Office have scheduled a press conference to discuss the case at 11 a.m. local time Tuesday.
Matthew, a former hospital worker, had previously been charged with abduction with intent to defile after Graham, 18, disappeared from a mall in downtown Charlottesville early on the morning of Sept. 13.
Surveillance video showed Graham as she walked or ran alone past a bar and a service station, then onto Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall. She sent friends a string of text messages, saying she was lost after leaving an off-campus party, according to police. Witnesses later told detectives she was seen with Matthew at a bar.

Authorities say remains found Oct. 18 in a rural area are that of University of Virginia student Hannah Graham.
Graham disappeared Sept. 13 after a night out with friends.
The remains were found about 12 miles from campus.
The man Graham was last seen with, 32-year-old Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr., has been charged with abduction with intent to defile Graham.
The remains were discovered roughly 6 miles from where the body of 20-year-old Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington was found after she vanished in 2009.

According to these new reports the woman never called local police. They never investigated the allegation of rape. The standard demanded by the U.S. Department of Education for campus rape was employed by this magazine. Accepting the accuser's words with no opportunity for the accused to defend himself (themselves). Isn't that what happened to a New York man who was never given notice of any accusation but was punished by crime families, Communists and police for an allegation  for 40 years? One more example of misguided standards promoted by the Obama-Holder Doctrine, which permits selected persons to ignore inconvenient laws. This is what happens when university administrators and the Department of Education bureaucrats impersonate police and judges. Expect many more misguided actions like this on campuses.

They said details have changed over time, and they have not been able to verify key points of the story in recent days. A name of an alleged attacker that Jackie provided to them for the first time this week, for example, turned out to be similar to the name of a student who belongs to a different fraternity, and no one by that name has been a member of Phi Kappa Psi.

Members of the Board of Visitors discussed sexual assault allegations that came out in a devastating portrait in Rolling Stone that has rocked the campus. The article described a woman's account of a gang rape, and went into detail about what it called a hidden culture of sexual violence at the school.
Board member Bobbie Kilberg said the school needed to stop underage drinking, a tall order on nearly any college campus, where drinking is a rite of passage and students under age 21 have no trouble getting alcohol.
Her suggestion was met with some resistance from student leaders. Tommy Reid, president of the school's Inter-Fraternity Council, said such a ban could push drinking "underground."

Jesse Matthew Jr., charged with the murders of college students Hannah Graham and Morgan Harrington, was sentenced Friday to three life prison terms for a sexual assault on a woman a decade ago in northern Virginia.
The Charlottesville, Virginia, man was sentenced in Fairfax, a suburb of the nation's capital, for attempted capital murder and sexual assault of a woman in 2005. The judge at Friday's packed sentencing hearing ordered the sentences to be served consecutively.
DNA evidence collected from Matthew during last year's investigation of Graham's disappearance linked him to the Fairfax County case.

His trial in the Hannah Graham case is set for July. He faces a possible death sentence there.
Though sentencing guidelines had called for a lesser term, Fairfax County Commonwealth's Attorney Ray Morrogh urged a life sentence.
"He was hunting free from conscience -- no restraint," Morrogh told the court, describing the night Matthew attacked his victim.
He called Matthew a "modern day Jekyll and Hyde" who projected an image as a gentle giant to friends and family while hiding his life as a violent sexual predator.
"Killing her with his bare hands would have been the ultimate rush for him," Morrogh said. "He seeks mercy but is himself merciless. He seeks empathy, but he is heartless."

By all appearances, the man arrested Wednesday in connection with the disappearance of a University of Virginia student has led a fairly ordinary life: He worked at a hospital, helped coach youth football for a time and attended a Christian university.
Now, however, 32-year-old Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr. is a central figure in a case that has roiled the college town of Charlottesville.
Police have charged him with abduction with intent to defile Hannah Graham, an 18-year-old sophomore who went missing on Sept. 13.
Charlottesville Police Police Chief Timothy Longo told a news conference Wednesday night that Matthew had been captured and was in custody in Galveston, Texas.

Hannah Graham's parents have released a statement pleading with residents to check their yards for any sign of their missing daughter who vanished one month ago today.
The 18-year-old University of Virginia student was last seen on a surveillance video walking with kidnapping suspect Jesse Matthew in downtown mall in Charlottesville, Virginia on September 13.
The sophomore has not been seen or heard from since.
'It is now a month since our precious daughter Hannah disappeared,' her parents, John and Sue Graham, said in a statement released on the university's website on Monday.

Graham had left an off-campus party on her own before she vanished. She was captured on surveillance video and by witnesses with 32-year-old Matthew.
After eluding authorities and fleeing to Texas, he was later arrested and charged with abduction with the intent to defile in connection with the case. He is currently behind bars.
Since his arrest, Matthew, a nursing assistant, has been linked by DNA evidence to the disappearance of 20-year-old Morgan Harrington.
