Smart Women Intimidate Some Men

Does this man look intimidated by this woman?

[From article]
While men say they like the idea of dating a woman who’s smarter than they are, when it comes time to meet her, they’re less keen on the brainy lady, a study that will be published in the November journal “Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin” reveals.
In the first part of the study, researchers had 105 male participants read a hypothetical scenario about a woman who, among other traits, had either outperformed the male subject or underperformed him in a math or English course; the men were then asked to imagine how desirable that person might be as a romantic partner.
In this scenario, “men formed favorable impressions and showed greater interest in women who displayed more (versus less) intelligence than themselves.” (Research out this year supports the notion that men say intelligence is very important to them in a romantic partner.)
But in the second part of the study — where the men were told they would meet a woman in person — a woman’s intelligence worked against her.
The participants took what they thought was an intelligence test, and were told that they would soon be meeting someone who had either scored better or worse than them on the test.
Faced with actually meeting a female who was smarter than they were, the men “distanced themselves more from her, tended to rate her as less attractive, and showed less desire to exchange contact information or plan a date with her,” the study revealed.
[. . .]
Plenty of men aren’t threatened by a woman’s intelligence, and this study didn’t look at what would happen if a man was in a relationship with a woman more intelligent than he was.

Brooklyn, NY District Attorney Criticized For Attitude Toward Women

[From article]
Brooklyn DA Ken Thompson, who made a fortune as a lawyer for women in harassment and sex-abuse cases, is ironically so rude to his own female staffers that they’re leaving his office in droves, sources told The Post.
At least 11 women have quit, or have been forced out or fired, during the past year, including high-profile prosecutor Coleen Balbert, whom Thompson recruited to head his Sex Crimes and Special Victims Bureau.
[. . .]
“There is a problem there with how he treats women,” said one woman who is part of the exodus, charging that Thompson “has a problem with women who are self-assured.”
[. . .]
Thompson’s office didn’t respond to a request for details on turnover, but a spokesman called the allegations a “despicable smear that’s belied by the facts.”
“The truth is that DA Thompson has hired and promoted more women than men since taking office,” spokesman Oren Yaniv said. “He appointed many women to key leadership positions and treats all employees professionally and respectfully.”

Women Distract Men Researchers. Then There Was Madam Curie. Oh, Wait.

[From article]
Nobel prize winner Sir Tim Hunt has an issue with female scientists - they're too distracting romantically and they cry when criticised.
Hunt, 72, an English biochemist who admitted he has a reputation for being a 'chauvinist', reportedly told the World Conference of Science Journalists in Seoul, South Korea:
“Let me tell you about my trouble with girls … three things happen when they are in the lab … You fall in love with them, they fall in love with you and when you criticise them, they cry.”
He added that he was "in favour of single-sex labs" but "doesn't want to stand in the way of women."

Documentary About Madam Marie Curie

Marie Curie (1867 – 1934)

[English version video removed from BBC and YouTube due to copyright claims]
[Description]
Nearly 80 years after her death, Marie Curie remains by far the best known female scientist. In her lifetime, she became that rare thing: a celebrity scientist, attracting the attention of the news cameras and tabloid gossip. They were fascinated because she was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize and is still the only person to have won two Nobels in two different sciences. But while the bare bones of her scientific life, the obstacles she had to overcome, the years of painstaking research, and the penalty she ultimately paid for her discovery of radium have become one of the iconic stories of scientific heroism, there is another side to Marie Curie: her human story.
This multi-layered film reveals the real Marie Curie, an extraordinary woman who fell in love three times, had to survive the pain of loss, and the public humiliation of a doomed love affair. It is a riveting portrait of a tenacious mother and scientist, who opened the door on a whole new realm of physics, which she discovered and named: radioactivity.

[From article]
Initially, she was buried at a modest cemetery in Sceaux, a Parisian suburb. In 1995, she was exhumed and became the first woman to be entombed on her own merits in the Panthéon in Paris.
First, however, her body had to be tested for traces of radiation. One of the revelations in the superb documentary was that she was unlikely to have died of radiation poisoning, as folklore would have one believe. A radiology expert interviewed by the programme recalled that when he tested her remains by “rubbing the forehead and pelvis of Marie Curie with blotting paper”, he found that the levels were low. He speculates that Curie in fact died of X-Ray poisoning sustained during her service in mobile X-Ray units in the Great War (which, incidentally, were her idea).

Google Employees, All Too Smart, Live in Bubble

[From article]
A Google employee says his company hires the absolute smartest people in the world and that it's a pretty big problem.
Avery Pennarun, an engineer for Google's broadband arm Fiber based in Canada, blew the whistle on what he calls the staff's overconfidence problem in a June 30 blog post he titled The Curse of Smart People.
'Smart people have a problem,' Pennarun writes, 'especially when you put them in large groups. That problem is an ability to convincingly rationalize nearly anything.'

How do these principles apply to schools like Harvard, Yale, MIT, etc? As a user of Google products I often wonder why they make so many "upgrades?" Often the improved version is worse than the old. Why not just leave it alone as long as it's working?

Man Exonerated After False Confession to Murder

Barry Beach confessed to killing 17-year-old Kim Nees, a Poplar, Montana high school valedictorian who was accepted to college. She was an unusual young woman. Beach was sentenced to 100 years without possible parole. After 29 years in prison witnesses came forward to reveal the real killers. Centurion Industries, a religious mission to free wrongfully convicted prisoners worked for 7 years to free Beach. Keith Morrison hosted the two-hour broadcast "Whispers In A Small Town," on NBC's Dateline on June 10, 2012.  She was "killed because she was smart and she was going to college." It may be unknown among academic professionals, that in working class and some middle class communities being intellectually superior makes others jealous.

Many Women Prefer Boobs to Brains

Does this explain why men focus beyond women's brains? Woman cannot be seduced by praising their smarts.

[From article]
"What a bunch of boobs
Here’s a finding of major mammary import.
A national survey of 2,089 women ages 18-25 finds that a whopping 41 percent of gals would prefer having large breasts to high intelligence. Further, more than a quarter of respondents said they’d gladly swap their IQs for a more generous chest.
Why? Nearly a third of women who answered pesky questions posed by a leading consumer Web site, CouponCodes4u.com, said big boobs would make them “feel happier.’’
The rest, I suppose, can afford breast-augmentation surgery and, hopefully, retain their brains. The world has become a scary place."
